Hi was just wondering what peoples experiences were with second labours?

Was yours faster & easier?

OR

Longer & harder?

I am starting to panic about going into labour i am a bit of a wimp can not even bear needles! My first labour was 16hrs not to bad, had all pain relief, epostomy (sp?) & few stitches I just keep having bad feelings about this second labour & it's making me very anxious now.

Please share all your different experiences with me TIA

Do you feel bigger than last time? DS was also 10 days late and was 8lb 10oz - waterbirth, no pain relief, second degree tear. This time, I think the baby's smaller - I have gestational diabetes and have been controlling my blood sugars, so I feel much smaller.

WhatAcow · 02/01/2006 21:12

hi there

my second birth was indeed faster and easier, so thats encouraging, eh?

first one was 5 hours, second was about an hour and a half! fast labours are pretty intense (yeah, like what labour isnt??) but i did feel that my recovery time was much shorter second time round too. distinctly remember feeling like id been assaulted up the backside with a cricket bat after first birth, and being a tad indignant that no-one mentioned it might feel like that , but dont remember feeling like that second time.

so relax, what will be will be and you cant very well not do it now, can you? and it IS likely to be faster and easier.
good luck!

mum2oneandbump dont worry about the size. I had ds who was 9lb1oz and told all the way through with DD that was having another bigbaby. They thought that she wasnt engaging due to being 9lb plus but turns out she was only 6lb14 and just had too much room to bob in and out..lol

Nemo was your bump same sort of size second time round?

I think i have quite alot of fluid this time though..

Nemo1977 · 02/01/2006 21:20

bump felt the same size but turned out to be a lot of water.

hunkermunker · 02/01/2006 21:22

Bump size doesn't really mean anything for baby size though - especially with a second or subsequent when everything's more...how shall I put this...relaxed than the first time round!

Mum2OneAndBump · 02/01/2006 21:35

Blimey yeah i know what you mean Hunker about the more "relaxed" thing, it's totally different this time round.

FASTER!

EASIER!

Chance are it will be MUCH nicer, whether you stress or not!

expatinscotland · 02/01/2006 21:47

MUCH faster - barely made it to hospital in time.

No time for anything but gas & air, which made me sick. Have to say it was much more painful, tho, b/c I'd had epidural w/first and didn't feel all that 'pressure' of baby's head.

Only a graze.

First labour: 24 hours, epidural, baby's hand up by her head, forceps, BIG episiotomy and stitches, awful.

Mum2OneAndBump · 02/01/2006 21:52

Oh god i hope i make it to hospital in time for an epidural don't think i could do it without.

DD was 20 hours, long, slow, had syntocin, then epidural, still didnt move along, pushed for 3 hours, eventually had episiotomy and ventouse delivery. She was 9lb 13oz and 13 days overdue.

DS (2nd) was in active labour 6 hours, pushed 45 mins, no stitches just a small graze. He was 8lb 12oz and 5 days early.

HTH

QueenVictoria · 02/01/2006 22:02

oh - just had gas and air with DS and a shot of meptid about 20 mins before pushing.

SnowmAngeliz · 02/01/2006 22:13

qbout the same time length (3-4 hours) and more painful because first time i had injection for forceps (which weren't needed in the end) and second time i felt every inch of her coming out.

Good luck++

sweetkitty · 02/01/2006 22:17

oh this is a nice thread am due same day as Hunker (we are racing!)

DD1 - 4h 20 mins from 1cm dilated until she was born, only gas and air it hurt like hell, hands up by her face and pushed like hell at the end so second degree tear loads of stitches but was ok later on that day

DD2 - who knows? am terrified right now but at the same time so want the baby out! DD1 was 6lbs 3ozs at 37+5 this one is definately bigger and am 38+3 so later too.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2006 22:29

mum2one
i was 9cm when i got to hospital. i'd had 'bad braxton-hicks' the previous day. woke at 6AM and was still feeling poorly, so took shower. at 7, woke DH. he phoned his parents at around 7.30 to say today was the day! we asked them to come collect DD1 around 8.30. MIL ordered us to go straight to hospital around 9. When we arrived at 9.45 I could no longer walk. I just wanted to hold onto a chair.

I was GUTTED to find out there was no time for pain relief!

DD2 was delivered at 10.26AM.

Mum2OneAndBump · 02/01/2006 22:32

Expat i suppose what your saying is don't hang around

I am going to go to the hospital as soon as i can not take the pain much longer, i did this before and when i arrived i was 3cm my pain barrier is very low indeed

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 02/01/2006 22:33

1st was 16.5 hrs "established" (induced/epidural)

2nd was 7.5 hrs TOTAL - natural, epidural didnt work and although hurt like hell, i did it! (im the biggest wimp ever!) Rebecca was face-first too and NO stitches etc.

GOOD LUCK xxx

Mum2OneAndBump · 02/01/2006 22:35

Thanks JARSM that is very positive

MTOAB - MWs thought I was exaggerating the pain with DD as I was only 1cm they said I could have 12 hours of this and it was only the start (made me feel great) anyway they said I could go home or go the antenatal ward but changed their minds as I was making too much noise and would wake everyone else up!!! So they said I could stay on the bed with the gas and air til morning.

The came back into the room when I was screaming that I needed to push said "no you don't, oh yes you do" and their was no time for any pain relief. They did apologise afterwards saying no wonder I was screaming.

I'm so scared dilating that fast last time whats it going to be like this time?

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 02/01/2006 22:37

big tip - gas and air!!! Fantastic stuff - makes you feel drunk but it DOES work if you use it at the right times!!!!

faster yes, easier - both were relatively easy, but 2nd was much much more painful.

Went straight into intense contractions, full on pain that just got worse and worse, but only for 4 hours and still said no to pain relief so can't have been that bad.

The faster the delivery the more intense the contraction pain,

First labour was 6 hours so contractions took longer to build up, 2nd labour the contractions were sharper, clawing nasty pains from the off.

No stitches either time.

First baby 7 lb 7 oz, 2nd 8 lb 4 oz.
