Rory is a fab name, if i ever had a boy he would be Rory or Robbie

its a very strong name

go for it!

foundintransleightion · 14/12/2005 11:38

Quite like Rory. Joachim is a nice name in writing but like you I'm not so fond of the pronunciation (believe the German pronunciation is Yo-a-keem btw).

Our godson is Rory and he is lovely, so we do like the name - and I like Joachim too.

hunkermunker · 14/12/2005 11:39

Like Rory, very sweet name.

followthestarlover · 14/12/2005 11:39

i like rory!

don't like joachim much...

do you have any other names you like? When i had ds i went through the baby name book and wrote a list of everything i liked... then gave it to dp to pick which ones he liked from my bunch! lol
so whatever he picked would be one i had already chosen

bluebear · 14/12/2005 11:39

I love it - We were going to call the last baby Rory if it had been a boy.

MIstletAOU · 14/12/2005 11:40

Ooh my dd1 is called Caitlin! Hello there.

I really like the name Rory. We live in the Highlands and I would have liked to use the gaelic spelling (Ruaridh) but thought that it was a bit much to saddle a child with. I have a friend with a ds the same age as mine called Rory and it really suits him.

WigWamBam · 14/12/2005 11:40

I'm not keen on Rory.

If you like Joachim pronounced another way, can you compromise - have the name spelled the way your dh wants it, but pronounced the way you want it?

Love the name Rory, not keen on Joachim

LilacBump · 14/12/2005 11:41

don't like rory that much
but love joachim (pronounced jo-a-chim though)

Enideepmidwinter · 14/12/2005 11:42

I like Rory it is sweet

dont like Joachim particularly but am not German or Jewish so there you go

harpsiheraldangelssing · 14/12/2005 11:43

hmm the thing is I would have been Rory if I had been a boy.... and I can't say my r's. My surname had an r in a crucial place too.
always thanked my lucky stars I was a girl.
it is a sweet name but a bit too "little-boy" ish, not for a grown man, maybe because I don't know many

SilentBite · 14/12/2005 11:47

isn't it short for Roderick?

German pron is yoch-em, where the yoch rhymes with the Scottish loch. I have a German cousin called it. Spanish/portuguese pronunciation is yo-a-quim, which is better.

Rory better all round, though -- bad news to saddle a child with a name they have to explain.

Love Rory, when I was little, we had a TV program called "Wanderly Wagon" and there was a character called Rory. He was my hero!

MissCaitlin · 14/12/2005 12:02

Wow! am kind of new to this MN thing so a little takn aback by all the responses! chuffed tho, ta.

hmmm... lots of support for Rory then. dh actually would prefer to have it the gealic spelling, mistletaou, (mostly gealic blood in our house too) but i think it might be a bit much too. Lovely choice of name for your dd, btw :0

yeah, i have names i like, followthestarlover, and i tried doing the list thing, but he rejected them all. grrr.

ds's 1&2 are called Archie and Maxwell (Max) so we'd like something strong and a bit scottish along the same lines to 'go' with those... Hamish? i dont think so...

what are other old-fashioned-y, and therefore cute IMO, Scottish boys names???
