I like Rory, comes from v difficult spelling of Gaelic form! And I think Roderick actually came from Rory not vice versa.

followthestarlover · 14/12/2005 12:06

oooh oooh ooooooh i like fergus

MissCaitlin · 14/12/2005 12:15

So far as I know, Enid, St Patrick came from England! He was abducted by Niall of the Nine Hostages and brought to Ireland

MissCaitlin · 14/12/2005 12:22

Enid - hows this for coincidence?
Patrick - ds1's second name
Angus - ds2's secondname
Alexander - dh's first name (Sandy)
Robert - step-sons first name !!

Ooooh, MissCaitlin, Enid's been stalking you!

xmasmcmudding · 14/12/2005 12:26

If you don't fancy the spelling of Ruaridh - I went to school with a boy who spelt it Ruary which I thought was a good compromise.

MarsyChristmas · 14/12/2005 12:27

Lovely name!

Kelly1978 · 14/12/2005 12:28

don't like Rory at all. Just sounds rather ugly to me, sorry. I do like Joachim though. The only problem would be that nobody would be able to pronounce it from written.

Kelly1978 · 14/12/2005 12:28

I like xmasmcmudding's spelling of it, sounds a good compromise.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 14/12/2005 12:30

I like the name Rory - although I could never name my children it, as a boy I taught in Zimbabwe was called it, and he was tragically killed in a car accident.

funny that my bf's daughter is having her first baby in January - a boy - and they want Rory, but only those 2 like the name - which is fair enough I suppose.

Sounds like it may be becoming popular

MissCaitlin · 14/12/2005 12:39

hmmmm...
thanks for the links followthestarlover - will peruse them at length later.

think the compromise spelling of Roary is quite nice too... tho the fear of having a 'Worwy' is still there...
and am starting to think mybe i'm coming round to Joachim (pr. Yoch-em)... btw, if we chose this he will be shortened to Jock (!)

how on earth do you pron Arregaithel??

I like Rory but I think it's one of those names that has to suit the baby iyswim, so I'd wait and have a look first ...

Glitterygook · 14/12/2005 12:43

I know 2 boys called Rory - not sure I'd choose it (well, I have 3 boys and i didn't choose it so there you go!) but I think it's quite cute. Not sure about on an older boy...hmmmm..

Auntybrandybutter · 14/12/2005 12:47

I love the name Rory

BoozyChristmacwoozy · 14/12/2005 12:49

The name Rory reminds me of Rory the Tiger that you always see at a particular campsite, it's not Butlins but the other one, can't remember the name now.

walkinginawinterBundleland · 14/12/2005 12:49

friend who's here working with me today has a Rory who's about 9. he's lovely!

MissCaitlin · 14/12/2005 12:50

i know the one you mean!i had a friend from Devon once who used to dress up as Rory the tiger as a holiday job at that camp, whatever it was called.
Hah! thats funny.

My DS1 is called Rory. I think it suits him. Its a nice name, not too popular, so when you call it a load of kids turn around IYSWIM! Its also thinking about when he's 18 / 30/ 45/ 60 etc. If he's out clubbing and has some girl chat him up, that baby name you chose might sound good when he's toddling but not on the pull with the girls!
Also its a mans name as well as a boys. We put ours with James for his middle name.
I think it means "Red King" too. I suppose it depends which baby name books you read!
Good luck in finding the right one!

MIstletAOU · 14/12/2005 13:21

seb my ds is Calum Lewis (there's some good strong Scottish names for you MissC)

motherinfurrierfestivehat · 14/12/2005 13:28

I'm just impressed at your forward planning skills. DD2's name only occurred to me the day I gave birth, and then only because I'd been reading a book by someone with the same name.
