I know an alcoholic rory too chandra! But still think it is a very nice name, go for it (but keep the spelling simple, poor mite)

thecattleareALOHing · 19/12/2005 22:06

Oh and Rory is nice too. But no rarughaids please. Too confusing for us simple English folk.

cathyspamtaslittlehelper · 19/12/2005 22:13

some lovely scottish boys names...
Donald (DD1's name)
Duncan
Fergus
Hamish
Arran
Lewis
Harris
Callum
Cameron
Kyle
Alba (someone I know has just used this!)
Andrew
Alistair (my brother's name)
Ian
or Mac?

cathyspamtaslittlehelper · 19/12/2005 22:15

Rory is cute though! (better than Joachim!HEHE!Joachim!!!) I like Ruaridh too though.

cathyspamtaslittlehelper · 19/12/2005 22:16

sorry if laughing was a bit rude but am a bit drunk (ooops}

MissCaitlin · 21/12/2005 00:52

haha - am not remotely offended by laughing - growing up in my family teaches you to have a sense of humour and besides, it is so nice to have this arena to exchange actual real views instead of being bloody polite all the time, i reckon!

so thanks for the list of name suggestions.. unfortunately almost all are ruled out due to being either names already held in the family, or too similar to said names (a Max and a Mac? nah, wouldnt work) or are on the standing veto list made up of past boyfriends. disapointingly rules out quite a few lovely names, im afraid!

am told i cant have charlie due to drug association ... and is fred really fashionable?? i didnt know that.

what about Ross? mmmm, nah.

Donald might be a contender, tho... does make you think of the duck but...

MissCaitlin · 21/12/2005 00:59

I like Rory - grew up with a Rory my younger sister's age and hated it - didn't like him. But then worked with a Rory who was lovely and I like it again! Would def think about it if had another DS.

Who mentioned Wanderly Wagon - showing your age!!! My Dad worked for RTE and when he used to bring me in to work for anything I got to play in the Wagon!!!

What about Fraser? We had that picked for DS but I made the mistake of telling my family first and they put me off "you can't call it Frasier" "Ugh" etc etc. But I was having a girl so she would be Laura. Till a boy popped out! Cue surprise. Doc asks what we will call him and I just said Matthew Frederick. DH was surprised as I hadn't told him I'd gone off Fraser as a name! Frederick is after DH's Dad.

DH still points out that we didn't call DS Fraser cos my family couldnt' pronounce it but they have problems with Matthew! Being from north Dublin - they call him "Ma-chew"!!!!

bsg · 21/12/2005 06:26

My cousin is called Rory. I don't know any others so it is not overused IMO. I must say though he was a very naughty little boy and continued that way and he is now about 23.

MissCaitlin · 21/12/2005 18:45

oh i dont KNOW [exasperated face] !!

thank you all for your opinions and suggestions... but i am no closer to deciding.

i like Leo and Fred, neither of which is Scottish, so a bit of a digression there...

I'm afraid i have tried and tried but i just cant get my head round Rory or Ruary or Ruaridh or whatever. i do like it, but i dont want to call my son it IYKWIM.

oh bother! why so many bloody boys! i love my boys but girls are so much easier to name! theres millions of good girls names!

I was at primary school with a girl called Rory (proper name, not shortened). Is that a one-off?

TurkeyGang · 21/12/2005 19:51

Oh dear MissC, I've often thought these name threads must end up confusing the poor person asking the question more than ever!

I don't have any strong feeling about the name either way but having been on too many Haven holidays for my sins there is a large childrens entertainment character there called Rory the Tiger who springs to my sad little mind and makes me run swiftly in the opposite direction, but take no notice of me.

I quite like Joachim but think you may be correcting the pronunciation often with it. (I always thought it was WAH-HEEM, so I'd be saying it wrongly)

It is difficult choosing a name, but don't go for something you dislike or it'll never feel right for you even if dh likes it (I liked Rowan but dh didn't so that was out). Why don't you wait until he's born, sometimes a person just doesn't look like a 'whatever you've chosen' anyway, and you have to think again.

BluStocking · 21/12/2005 22:28

hey Misscaitlin - I think I know your Mum!! (and you!) I'm not a mad stalker, honest, any regular MN-er will tell you that - but a couple of things you wrote about your Mum on another thread made me think 'aha!' Does your Mum's name begin with A, and your little sisters name with S?
If yes, I'll CAT you, and you'll see who I am! Your Mum and I used to work together - and you worked there for a bit, too

MissC · 21/12/2005 23:07

hey blustocking - yes! you have identified me. what is this CAT thing all about then?

MissC · 21/12/2005 23:13

i am intrigued! hope you answer b4 i go to bed (soon)

BluStocking · 21/12/2005 23:17

Wow!

Hope you don't mind that I identified you! Last time I saw your Mum she was waxing very lyrical about you and your babies - very happy! CAT is 'contact another talker' - I send a message to MN and they pass it on to you! It won't get through until tomorrow, though!

Some clues - when your Mum worked with me, it was in a different field to the the one she is working in now - in the arts. I didn't have a child in those days. I used to come round to your house for wild Pictionary nights!

Keep your posting name as it is now - MissC - if you change it my CAT won't get through. My usual posting name is Blu. BluStocking is just for Xmas.

MissC · 21/12/2005 23:23

ok. i figured it was OH, where we worked...

BluStocking · 21/12/2005 23:24

I just tried to send you a CATmessage - but it got bounced back because when you registered you did or didn't tick the box for receiving messages - you can change that by going into your profile, I think...

BluStocking · 21/12/2005 23:24

Yes - that's the place!

MissC · 21/12/2005 23:27

yeah, i just changed my preferences so i can receive it... didnt realise i had opted out. am kind of new to this...

BluStocking · 21/12/2005 23:32

I'll try again - but Tech, the nice man who sends them on, a bit like cyber-santa, will be in bed or something, so you'll have to wait in suspense - if it still is suspense!

BluStocking · 21/12/2005 23:49

OK - message sent - the discussion can get back to the Gaellic spelling of Joachim.....
I like Fred, and Joachim, BUT you can't shorten it to Yock, he will get callled 'yuck' in school, and might anyway.
I like Rory, too, but not in a 'yes, that's it' kind of way.
Finn, Finnlo?
Milo

Name choosing drove me mad - in the end all names started to sound like each other and I found myself reciting 'balsamic, peter, jello, musk, Kassimeer, Caesar Augustus, gasket'...all words blended into each other.

MissC · 21/12/2005 23:52

Cool, i'll check my mail tomorrow then.
and yes actually, i dont really know who you are yet... as far as i know my mum goes on about me and the boys to everyone and their dog! and wild pictionary nights were not exactly uncommon back then. better than the bloody boggle at least!

MissC · 21/12/2005 23:57

yeah... other half will shorten Joachim to Jock, which i actually like in a funny sort of way. better than i like Rory anyway. like you say, i do like rory too, just not enough.
isnt milo a drink?
oh sod it. IKWYM - all words are starting to sound the same and names are just a pain. maybe i should just call him Three, and be done with it.
"I am not a number...well, actually I am..."
