2nd baby - bigger or smaller than 1st?

People keep saying your 2nd is bigger and as ds (bless him) was 9lbs, I'm a little concerned. Is there a 'rule' or is it just luck...?
Many thanks.

I do hope not. DS was 9lb 6oz!

Fireworks · 04/11/2005 08:11

DD1 - 8lb 6oz.
DD2 - 9lb 8oz

My sisters:
DS1 - 7lb 2oz
DS2 - 8lb 2oz
DD1 - 9lb 8oz

Hmm - definitely quite common to have bigger babies second time round and it is my own personal experience and my sisters. However, there are no doubt plenty out there that don?t follow this pattern. I was a little heavier to start with for DD2 but if anything ate a healthier diet. Just can?t always tell - I was absolutely convinced DD2 was a boy as pregnancy and bump were sooo different. So did mws!

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 04/11/2005 08:12

DD1 6lbs 6oz (5 days early)
DD2 7lbs 4oz (4 days late)

eidsvold · 04/11/2005 08:19

was the case for me

dd1 - 6lb 1/2 oz
dd2 - 9lb 7 oz

lucykate · 04/11/2005 08:27

dd - 6lb 7oz, 5 days early - i had a huge bump though!
ds - 6lb 9oz, 5 days early - not so big a bump second time round.

my sil's first was 9lb 14oz, but her other 2 were quite a bit smaller.

allthegirls · 04/11/2005 08:31

I had DD1 8lb 8oz then 15 months later i had DD2 7lb 10 oz so bigger baby second ws not the case for me!!

hayleylou · 04/11/2005 08:41

First DS 8.7lb and then second
DD 7.13lb

chjlly · 04/11/2005 08:43

My first was 2lb 15oz No2 was 10lb 15oz!!

Chandra · 04/11/2005 08:47

I have only one DS, but if it helps, I'm 7 inches taller than my older sister and 12 than my younger one (but she was bigger than me at birth).

monstrousmummy · 04/11/2005 09:07

worked for me

ds1 7lb 2oz
ds2 9lb 14oz

!!

I wnat a third hoping that she/he won't be too much bigger than ds 2!

mancmum · 04/11/2005 09:14

mine was 1.5 lighter than her older brother -- than god not the other way as he was 10lb!!

coppertop · 04/11/2005 09:18

Ds2 (9lbs) was lighter than ds1 (9lbs 8oz) but this was because he was induced at 38wks rather than ds1's 41 weeks.

RainbowWalker · 04/11/2005 09:22

ds1 7lb 5oz
ds2 8lb 10oz (11 years ago today - just reliving the labour pains as I sit here!)
twins 6lb 2oz / 5lb 12oz - and two placentas to boot!!

RainbowWalker · 04/11/2005 09:24

chjlly - wow that's one hell of a difference, bet you thought you'd given birth to a monster second time!!

RainbowWalker · 04/11/2005 09:31

That's another thread I appear to have killed!!

chjlly · 04/11/2005 10:45

Yes RW I did go into shock when I found out her weight! And I had several Midwives come and see her because of her size!!

DS was 6 weeks early & was low birth weight.

I think my body was overdoing things for DD to make up for what it didn't do for Ds

AnnaK · 04/11/2005 13:36

Interesting...
DS1 was 10 days late, I'm hoping the next one will be earlier and hopefully, therefore, not as big.

Bigger - ds was 9 9 and dd 9 13. MUCH easier second time round though.

Gobbledigook · 04/11/2005 13:38

Ds1 8lb 4oz
Ds2 8lb 3oz
Ds3 8lb 10oz

Gobbledigook · 04/11/2005 13:39

AnnaK - doesn't necessarily follow. Ds1 was 10 days late and 8lb 4 and ds2 was a week early and 8lb 3 - so more or less the same. Ds3 was bang on time and 8lb 10.

ds1 7lb 11oz (4 days early)
ds2 9lb 10oz (10 days late and induced)
Midwife said 2nd would be about same size hardly!! we nicknamed him the whopper and he looked 3 months old already

kate100 · 04/11/2005 16:53

True for me
DS1 9lb11os 10 days late
DS2 9lb 12oz 1 day early
Much easier the second time round
