2nd baby - bigger or smaller than 1st?

People keep saying your 2nd is bigger and as ds (bless him) was 9lbs, I'm a little concerned. Is there a 'rule' or is it just luck...?

AnnaK my ds was 9lb too I had my dd 4yrs later and she was a lovely 7lb 10oz

DD1 - 7lb 4oz
DD2 - 8lb 10oz

my second was smaller.
My 4th was the biggest
3rd the smallest

DD - 11 days overdue - 8lb 4oz

DS - 10 days overdue - 8lb 9oz

I've heard that second babies are bigger, but the MWs can usually hazard a pretty good guess, if you ask them. If it's any consolation, even though DS was bigger than DD and quicker so I didn't have time for any pain relief, I only had to push for 6 mins, whereas I was over an hour with DD. (mersey tunnel anyone?)

quite a difference in weight but, if its any consolation, DS's birth much easier and quicker despite being bigger.
