Anyone due May 04?

Just found out I'm pregnant with an EDD on May 7th, so though I'ld kick off this thread. I have a DS who was two last week. I am suprised to find myself having very mixed emotions - excitement at the thought of a sibling for DS, but horror at the thought of the pregancy, birth and first few months. Anyone else just found out they're pregnant?

Our parents swore by it because they were swayed by the hugemarketing campaigns saying Guiness was good for you. As there is no proof of that at all they are not allowed to say it anymore. It has no more iron than a nice steak, but if you want it, have it - I do believe that a small amount of alcohol (ie 1-2 units/week) isn't going todo huge harm, and anything that makes you feel better counts as medicinal in my book!

Egypt · 05/10/2003 16:42

thanks prufrock!!

I really do think that sometimes your body knows more than you do what you really need! I really thought it would be hard work avoiding red wine this pregnancy as it's something I love. I succumbed after the first 3 months last time around and just limited it to a glass a week.

This time around, the thought of red wine leaves me completely cold

Still fancying that chicken, mayo and lettuce sandwich though, so despite the queeziness going to buy the ingredients and go for it...

GeorginaA · 06/10/2003 16:11

Update: have just had the best chicken, mayo & lettuce sandwich in the history of chicken, mayo & lettuce sandwiches...

... now is it bad if I raid my ds' smartie stash?

Azure · 06/10/2003 16:51

GeorginaA - glad your sandwich hit the spot! Linnet and Egypt, my scan was also scheduled for Oct 23 - what a co-incidence. Unfortunately DH is away on a course and so I had to reschedule for Oct 28th - can I bear the extra 5 days wait?

mmmmmm, your sandwich does sound lovely. have had 2 bowls of cornflakes since got home from work, with a big dollop of cream on the top! nice and cold. wanting to make tea, but as dh hasnt washed up yet from the WEEKEND! have to wait as cant even move in the kitchen. he's not home yet and has promised to do it. god, he was up til 1.30am last night....what does the guy do?!

talie · 06/10/2003 18:53

Hello all,

No official date as yet but worked it out to be end of May 03 but if like my dd it's six weeks prem then maybe I should be in the April thread?

Nice to read other people are in the same boat! I'm feeling pretty rough at the mo - forgot how awful morning sickness is! Last tiem I managed it by eating little and often but this time I feel sick constantly and nothing seems to help at the minute! I can't stand it! Also feel quite depressed - don't know if that's just the hormone thing or whether I'm dreading the thought of coping with my then to be approaching terrible two's and a newborn! HELP!! I know lots of people do it but I sometimes feel I can't cope with the one I've got! Are most people completely bonkers having more than one?

Hope to still be here in May and not leaving early - well not six weeks early anyway!

GeorginaA · 06/10/2003 18:57

Welcome talie and congratulations!

I know what you mean about being mad, I made the mistake of reading Three socks, one shoe and no hairbrush (or is it three shoes, one sock...?! Either way DON'T READ IT WHILE HORMONAL!) and feel miserable about having 2 now. I feel really selfish, as if I'm about to destroy ds' life by giving him a sibling (which is daft, because I'm sure him having a sibling will actually do him a lot of good).

I need to find more positive reading matter...

Azure · 07/10/2003 08:49

Hello and welcome talie. I'm also worried about having two, but I guess we'll just cope with it when the time comes. To think that these will be the last few months of "having it easy" with just one child.

Hi everyone - just back from holiday, which was lovely, although a bit wet in the second week. Luckily someone out there lent us a couple of videos, Pingu and PB Bear, which we now all know backwards....

Feel like we've come back to very autumnal weather though. Had to get my winter duvet out last night.

Very impressed with all you lot who are managing to keep it a secret - i've told most of my close friends already. Going to keep it quiet from work just yet though.

Azure, where is your scan ? Are you going to Queen Charlotte's? I went to the doctors on Monday who are going to write to the hospital, but she was pretty vague about when I could expect the first scan. I got involved in a clinical trial last time so I had about 5 scans which was nice, but I can't remember when the official ones were.

Not feeling quite as tired as I was before I found out, but like others here, am having to eat constantly. I was about 3 months into a fitness programme before I went on holiday so all that benefit has completely gone !

How is everyone else doing ?

Azure · 07/10/2003 13:17

Vivat, glad to hear you had a nice holiday. My scan is booked at Chelsea & Westminster (where I had DS) because I am still officially registered with my old doctor. I was given a six weeks waiting list for registration with the new doctor (still 3 weeks away), so really don't know what is going to happen with my midwife care. I guess I will then decide between C&W and Queen Charlotte's. Did you go there last time? What did you think? Re the scan, I was told that QC doesn't do a nuchal fold test as a matter of course - don't know how true that is.

Congratulations talie.

Getting very jealous as most of you already have your first scan date. Went to to the GP last week, and he said I'd get something from the hospital but nothing yet. Is the booking in appointment before or after the first scan....I can't remember.

Had a fantastic lunch today...onion baguette, houmous, pepper and pasta salad and sun dried tomatoes with pecorino cheese and garlic...really yummy (Very sorry to those of you who have morning sickness and could have done without reading that!).

Am feeling so tired all the time though, but it is a good reason to get dh to do some of the housework!

vivat · 08/10/2003 10:44

I had ds at Queen Charlotte's, but at the old hospital (in fact ds was one of the last babies to be born there before they knocked it down - there were packing cases everywhere). I was very impressed with the care there, my midwife was fab, although the post natal care left a bit to be desired, I was only in for one night thank goodness.

I've heard good things about the new hospital (next to the Hammersmith Hospital) and I think that being this close to a maternity hospital is pretty lucky. What do others think of the new Charlotte's ?

Egypt · 08/10/2003 18:12

congrats talie and welcome
Snips your lunch sounds divine! I can't stop thinking about fooooooood mmmmmmm. not feeling sick now but still so so so tired. expecting proper sickness to kick in soon.
anyone getting sharp pains in abdomen still? when standing??

Bozza · 08/10/2003 22:03

Not so much as I was Egypt. I gagged on a banana today but have luckily only felt low level nausea apart from that. Permanently exhausted though. Started to imagine I can feel my womb but not sure really. Last time though it did rise early because the midwife thought I was either wrong on dates or having twins at my booking in and bundled me off for a scan.

On that subject have heard nothing yet. Have had two minute appt with doc and apart from that nothing.

Linnet · 08/10/2003 23:20

If I've been sitting down and stand up to quickly I get really bad pains like someone is squeezing all my muscles, like period pains but worse. I can't walk properly for a minute or two then it goes away. Very strange and quite unnerving.

GeorginaA · 09/10/2003 13:03

I'm getting a lot of aches and pains there - got quite worried about it the other day. I find it's worse if I've stood up for a long time and it's eased if I sit for a while (something that's hard to do with a toddler around!) Ds is demanding to be carried lots and wants lots of cuddles too, so a bit fearful I'm overdoing it - but what else can I do?! I'm glad to hear it's "normal" though.

Felt very depressed yesterday about how little energy I had. It's started to make a real difference how many times up and down stairs I have to go to get toys and things for ds and am dosing off all throughout the day. I'm starting to worry that I'll never have any energy ever again!

talie · 09/10/2003 18:53

Know the feeling about being up and down with a toddler all day! I find I'm getting a little snappy because all I want to do is lie down and rest!

I'm still feeling really sick although I am now armed with a bottle of ginger ale to see if that works! Cant stomach the ginger biscuits though - finding everything too sweet or too salty. In fact I haven't found anything I'm particularly enjoying at the minute because of the constant sickness - eating is just too much effort because of it!

First Drs appt due next week - want to try and get an early scan due to my 'spotting' (as in my first pregnancy) but have just moved to a new area and dont know how accommodating my new dr will be. Have heard they don't do the Nuchal Fold scan in this area (was lucky to have one with my first) - does anyone know how I go about getting one - (I presume I'll have to go private?) or will I get that info from my new dr?

Egypt · 09/10/2003 20:54

talie you should get that info from your new dr or midwife. they dont so them in my area either. i was given the no at the hosp to make an appointment. cost £100

Linnet · 09/10/2003 21:15

When I went to see my GP I asked her if they do a nuchal scan at our local hospital and she didn't know. But she said that they had just got a big new scaning machine in so maybe but to ask when I went in for my scan. Not really very reassuring.
She also wasn't sure if they would let my Dh get a blood test to find out his blood group and RH factor, I'm negative, so we have to ask that when we're up at the hospital as well.

by the way is everyone else who's having their second got a toddler at home all day?
My dd is 6 and in school all day anyone else going to have a big age gap between their kids?

Bozza · 09/10/2003 22:02

Linnet - DS will be 3 in February but I work 3 days a week. TBH I'm finding those days hardest because at the moment DS still has a nap so I can join in on the days I'm with him. But on work days by the time I get home its 6 and I only have two hours with DS so I have to make the most of it but then by 8 I'm exhausted. I remember last time I used to go to bed for an hour when I got home from work. For me the tiredness is definitely a lot worse than the sickness which hasn't been too bad.

DS is also wanting to be carried a lot which I am finding a bit trying. Also we are attempting to reduce his use of the pushchair.

My twin sister is 8 weeks pregnant (due 26th May) and has just started suffering really badly from morning sickness. I have a 15 month old dd and luckily didn't suffer from morning sickness at all, so am no help to her. Does anyone have any tips I can pass on to her? At the moment the thought of eating makes her ill, let alone actually eating! Any help would be appreciated.

GeorginaA · 13/10/2003 11:50

Attempt to eat something (even if it feels like you're forcing yourself) because eating little and often really does help. Cut out caffeine (that really helped me) if she hasn't already. Start off with white carbohydrates like bread, crackers, pasta etc. (Thinking about it, anything that doctors recommend for when you have a stomach bug would probably be fairly settling on the tummy: apples, plain toast, rice, bananas etc..) Then add anything else she fancies (if she does fancy anything) and take it from there.

Oh, and don't do what I did, forget to take your vitamins just because you're feeling queezy!

Bugzi · 13/10/2003 12:50

Thanks GeorginaA, i'll get her to give that a bash.
