Just found out I'm pregnant with an EDD on May 7th, so though I'ld kick off this thread. I have a DS who was two last week. I am suprised to find myself having very mixed emotions - excitement at the thought of a sibling for DS, but horror at the thought of the pregancy, birth and first few months. Anyone else just found out they're pregnant?

Congratulations Snowbird. You only just got in here. Another 2/3 days and you would have been starting a June thread.

Well I'm back from Tenerife and realising just how tired I am. While I was there I thought DS was being hard work but now we're home and he's being really quite good I've realised its me thats absolutely knackered. And the 4 am rise to get the plane home was a bit of a tough one. Was retching in the bathroom this morning but not actually sick so thats started now. Still I think I'm having it easy compared to poor Prufrock.

Quick question for you all. Have you been telling people yet? Only DH knows even though we were on hols with in-laws.

prufrock · 01/10/2003 08:58

Congrats and welcome Snowbird.

I am actually feeling a bit better - I started on Ipecac yesterday and whilst I did throw up yesterday it was only once in the morning, and I managed to keep my dinner down for the first time in a week! Still feel sick, but at least I can keep something down now. Homeopathy rules!

I have told so many people - it's difficult to keep it a secret at work, everybody remembers how bad I was last time so had pretty much already guessed. At least they are cutting me some slack now.

snowbird · 01/10/2003 11:31

Azure - I have a ds who is 14mths old.
Bozza - We've told my parents and dhs and also my best friend. Her dh is friends with my bil and she is ttc so, I didn't think it would be fair to hear the news from someone else. I am itching to tell everyone though and had to stop myself from telling my neighbours yesterday.

Bozza · 01/10/2003 13:04

We kind of feel that we should tell both sets of parents first but can't trust MIL to keep it to herself. So I think we're going to tell them first and then allow it to be broadcast generally in a couple of weeks (at 9 wks) except leave work until 12 wks.

Linnet · 01/10/2003 21:48

I'm 9 and a half weeks along and we haven't told anyone yet. Well apart from all of you of course. But we have told no family or friends. We want, if we can, to keep it a secret as long as possible. I'm hoping to not let on until after I've had my second scan but I'll see how the bump grows. What I'd really like to do is announce it at christmas but I'm not sure how well that will work out.
Also don't want to tell dd too soon as she'll get up every day and ask if this is the day when the baby will arrive.
I'm desperately waiting to hear from the hospital to see when my scan will be, I'm very excited about that.

Linnet - I'll be impressed if you can keep it a secret so long! I've told far more random strangers than anyone else - only this morning I was discussing it with the assistant in the Body Shop, and I told the estate agent when I moved house last month. I can't wait until my scan when (all being well) I can tell people at work, as I don't like the subterfuge.

I know that since this is my second I will probably show sooner so we'll have to see how things go.

But last time I didn't have a very big bump at all and people that we didn't tell that we knew didn't even realise I was pregnant until they saw me pushing a pram. Although they all probably just thought that I was getting fat and were to polite to say anything. Last time I didn't tell anyone at work, well apart from my boss who I asked not to mention it, until I was about 5 and a half months gone and none of them had noticed. Or so they said anyway.

We haven't told any of our friends or family that we were even trying for another baby. We just thought that we'd try and see if it happened and it did first try.

GeorginaA · 03/10/2003 12:17

Feeling horribly sick today and unable to eat anything (although haven't been sick). Last time around I craved cheese pretty much throughout - lived on the stuff - this time round the thought of anything cheesy makes me want to hurl.

What foodstuffs are more tolerant to queeziness/heartburn? I've gone through my fridge and felt ill at everything so far!

prufrock · 04/10/2003 13:17

Georgina I've been living on white carbs - toast, pasta (with a sauce of cream, parmesan and lemon juice), jacket potato (with cottage cheese if I'm feeling brave). Another good one is tomato and rice soup.

GeorginaA · 04/10/2003 14:29

That sounds like a good plan, prufrock. I tried eating some chips last night and they went down fairly easily without feeling ill, and a plain ham roll has been eaten today successfully, so I think the plain white carbs plan is one I'll follow this week.

I really fancy a chicken mayo & lettuce sandwich though - think that's a bit optimistic?!

My main problem is that I really have the taste for food, but just react badly to it when I actually get to eat it... most frustrating

its horrible isnt it. DH just doesnt seem to understand. i am so tired, but i think he thinks i am putting it on. he does nothing around the house and if i ask him to help he reacts as though i am nagging, so i just dont ask. then that makes me dwell on it and i get in a bigger mood. so so tired and so so hungry. dont feel very sick, just mildly when no food in stomach. (not that thats often!) but my food seems to digest in a matter of minutes and then i'm hungry again! ARGHH please pass

I'm like you egypt. I have been snacking loads to avoid the empty feeling but nothing tastes right and I have gone off sweet stuff. Have been eating babybels. I have retched a couple of times but not been sick. But I am hideously tired. It was the same last time and I used to come home from work and go to bed for an hour or so. But now I have to collect DS from nursery and go through his routine with him before I collapse.

Thanks for your thoughts on telling people. Linnet I too will be impressed if you manage to keep quiet for that long - but then I had a huge and obvious bump last time. We're planning on telling immediate family next weekend and then just whoever after that. It will be 9 weeks. I have a close friend who had a miscarriage in the summer so I think I should also tell her personally. I take your point about not telling people Twiglett and I agree but if anything was to go wrong this week I think I would still tell immediate family anyway. Its just this thing about my MIL not being able to keep a secret. eg last time we asked her to keep quiet from Friday evening until Monday so we could tell other family members. Not that long but she lasted until Saturday morning.

GeorginaA · 04/10/2003 16:41

I'll remember the gaviscon thing. I seem to be much better today (although I have been careful what I'm eating - so maybe that has more to do with it). I've eaten a big pile of ginger biscuits because someone told me ginger helped with morning sickness, and I've just had a tall glass of pineapple juice which really hit the spot.

Maybe it was more heartburn than morning sickness? How can you tell the difference? I remember heartburn from first time around but that wasn't until quite a way into the pregnancy when baby was pressing on my stomach, so really didn't expect to get it so soon.

The other thing I've had this time around that's new is palpitations. Was very scary, but apparently it's reasonably common...

Linnet · 04/10/2003 20:59

Got my letter from the hospital this morning, my scan is on the 23rd when I'll be 12 and a half weeks, I can't wait to see the baby on the screen and make it all seem more real. I feel a right fraud as you are all suffering and I'm doing fine no sickness or anything. I'm not trying to be smug here I just seem to be following the same pattern as before. I hope you all feel a lot better soon.
I suffered heartburn in the later stages last time and used to drink milk or if I couldn't get any milk I'd have gaviscon chews they both seemed to work for me.

Bozza · 04/10/2003 21:37

Georgina - I think the ginger biscuits do work. I used to keep a packet in my bedside drawer last time and have one before I got up. Had a craving for a can of ginger beer the other day.

Linnet - are you not even tired? I'm going to bed shortly despite having a nap when DS did this afternoon.

Linnet · 04/10/2003 22:23

Dare I say it but I'm not really any more tired than I usually am. I'm quite a tired person most of the time anyway and often doze off for half an hour in the afternoon if I have time or when I'm putting dd to bed. Sometimes I'll have a little nap with her while she falls asleep. I've always had trouble getting up in the mornings but lately it seems to be a little worse but I can't make up my mind if it's because I'm pregnant or because of the darker mornings coming in.
If it wasn't for the fact that my chest is still quite tender I'd really be beginning to wonder. When does your chest stop hurting anyone know? I can't remember from the last time as it was so long ago.

Egypt · 05/10/2003 08:29

Linnet, i have a scan on 23rd also. Very excited. I will be just 10 weeks, but its to check all ok, as conceived on clomid. good job can have one actually, as found out that scans werent give until weeks 20 in my area! How can anyone wait that long?!

Egypt · 05/10/2003 12:02

Is it ok to drink guiness when preg?? Lots of iron in the stuff and i know our parents used to swear by it 20-30 years ago. does anyone know if it is safe? (IE alcohol content). is anyone drinking it? i have a biiig craving for the stuff!
