Just found out I'm pregnant with an EDD on May 7th, so though I'ld kick off this thread. I have a DS who was two last week. I am suprised to find myself having very mixed emotions - excitement at the thought of a sibling for DS, but horror at the thought of the pregancy, birth and first few months. Anyone else just found out they're pregnant?

Glad to hear that you're ok Egypt. Shame about all the passing from pillar to post though, I would have been right annoyed if I'd been in your shoes as well.

I got my blood test done today to check my platelets. Dh is getting his blood test done tomorrow and doesn't have to pay as he needs to know for a medical reason, if he'd just wanted to know for the sake of it they would have charged him £35! Apparently the nurse said that if you ask them what blood group you are just because you want to know they aren't legally allowed to tell you. Seems a bit odd I would have thught that people should know their blood types if they wanted to.

Had to make appointment to see the midwife as well. Got to go see her at 24 weeks. The Midwives only run a clinic on a Tuesday from 2-4pm and that is it. I work all day Tuesday. I only work 2 full days a week and that is one of them. I'm a bit peeved as I'm going to have to ask for time off to go to ante-natal appointments now to see this midwife every month. I know that I'll get paid for this time off and legally my work have to let me go but since I only work part time it would have been easier if I could have gone on my own time.
I'm wondering now if I really need to go and see the midwife every time or if I can just go and see my dr like I did last time.

Hope everyone else is doing ok

prufrock · 07/01/2004 22:37

Glad your OK Egypt, but what a farce. Completely agree about the inability of NHS direct - they may as well hook teh number up to an answerphone that says go and see your GP. Thank God we have Mumsnet!

Had my 20 week scan today (at 22 + 5) and confirmed it's a boy (you're the only people we are telling). He's a little contortionist and we had a student sonographer so got to spend lots of time staring at him. He was scking his toes at one point! Everything is present and correct, but they want us to go back ofr a check in 8 weeks as the abdominal corcumference is in the 97th percentile. I'm not really worried - just figure he takes after his Dad in the belly area!

libb · 07/01/2004 23:59

Yay Prufrock - another boy!

I have no idea what to do with them . . . eek.

DP chuffed to bits though so he can share his wisdom!

Egypt · 08/01/2004 18:10

Wow - a boy! I wouldnt know what to do with them either Libb! We didnt find out what we are having, although obviously v curious. I just figured that i may regret finding out, whereas i cant exactly regret not finding out! We are having a 3D scan at Proscan though, just for the fun of it, and of course as a great keepsake and i'm not sure that you can really avoid finding out with those. anyone know?

Just a quick question. My mil bought me a foot massager for bday. its a foot spa really, nothing massaging about it, except the bubbly water. Says in the instructions 'not recommended for use in pregnancy'. Now, I know they have to cover themselves by putting this, but how can a foot spa really be bad? I have a bath everyday?!

GeorginaA · 08/01/2004 20:00

I'm not 100% sure but I believe it's to do with the aromatherapy oils they supply with the foot spas - may not be suitable for use in pregnancy. Might be a good idea to use it without the provided smellies or to research each scent carefully to see if it's safe before using.

Egypt · 08/01/2004 21:51

Thanks Georgina, but there arent actually any smellies with it! Maybe shall wait til after baby is born b4 using it anyway........if i have the time then!?!

Hi all

Seems like forever since I posted. Went away to stay with family for Christmas, and then went to Cornwall for a week for New year with friends and had a right scream (well as much as I could without drinking too much alcohol!).

Have caught up with everyone's posts and glad to know that all your scans have gone ok. I've got mine on the 20th and really looking forward to it.

Egypt I'm glad that you are ok after the CM incident. Must have been a nightmare not being able to get any immediate help.

Linnet-you mentioned in one of your posts that you'll have to be back at work before Xmas. I thought we were allowed a year off work now if we wanted. But I'm not sure if you can choose how long you want off between the 6 months and the year (e.g. 8months). I don't want to take the full year off, but was hoping I could go back after Xmas too. Will have to check it out.

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Linnet · 09/01/2004 23:20

Snips was just talking to another woman at work about this today as she is also pregnant but due in July.

With the company that my friend and I work for we are entitled to 26 weeks paid leave. I think the norm is 24 weeks but our job gives us 26 weeks. This is Ordinary Maternity leave OML.

And because we've both been in our jobs for at least 26 weeks continuous service by the 15th week before expected week of childbirth(sorry copying from the info I got from work)WE are also entitled to Additional Meternity leave of a further 26 weeks.

So I and my friend are both entitled to 52 weeks off work although only 26 weeks of that will be paid. The remaining 26 weeks are unpaid, although I think my info says that we can split the payments or something.

I'm not sure if I'd want to take a whole year off as I might not want to go back at the end of it, lol and Dh and I couldn't really manage on just his wage for the extra 26 weeks. I still have to talk to someone about all this properly but will be doing that next week. Maybe an extra week or two to see me over christmas and new year will be ok. But we are shut over most of christmas anyway so it wouldn't really bother me going back for a week or two before hand as I'd be off again during the two week festive season.

In other news with me today I got the results back from my blood test and my platelets are still low and I need to go back for another test to check them in 4 weeks time, oh Joy.

and Dh got his blood test done yesterday to find out his rh factor, will get the results of that next week. His arm is fine wouldn't even know he's had a blood test, my arm however is all black and blue, typical.

Linnet · 13/01/2004 22:44

Hi everyone, how are you all doing?

I'm doing fine. Dh got the results of his blood test back today.

(A Quick Recap:- He was getting tested to find out his blood group. His mother was very insistant that he was O Neg but the hospital wouldn't take our word for it. And since I didn't want to be given Anti-D that was most probably unneccasary, because I'm O Neg, we were getting him tested.)

Anyway the results came back today and he phoned to get them and Yes he is O Neg just like his mum, his brother, me, dd and my mum. Quite strange when you think that only 7% of the population is O Neg and we know so many, lol

so I don't need to get the anti-D and I'm very happy.

Nothing much else happening here. Seeing the midwife next week for my first appointment. Going to be asking her questions about the hospital, they keep trying to close it down but they haven't managed so far. But, my friend at work is due in July and has been told that she will probably have to deliver at the hospital they are trying to transfer all services to which is 20 miles away. Nobody has mentioned anything to me at my appointments so I'm going armed with a list of questions next week. I'll not be happy about having to go so far away if that is the case but I'll wait and see what the midwife says.

Hope you are all well

Oh great Twiglett. Now you can start on names properly.

Linnet - if they didn't mention anything to you I would imagine that you should be OK. These things are much more likely to be delayed than brought forward IME.

Still haven't got over my Christmas cold/cough and my left sinus is blocked every morning clearing my about lunchtime. Quite painful and annoying. I've also exploded and now look very pregnant. Spring cleaning has slowed down now initial enthusiasm has waned. Half way through kitchen drawers. Had appt with midwife last week (21 weeks) and mentioned a home birth to her. She seemed quite positive and DH seems to have come round a lot and started seeing the postitives. Only thing is because of having a big baby last time might be advised to have a growth scan towards the end. But on the other hand if I've done it once I should be able to do it again IYSWIM.

prufrock · 14/01/2004 13:29

Congrats twiglett - We were getting a bit testosterone heavy round here. Don't you find it difficult to continue to refer to her as it when in public?

I am having hospital nightmares too. Need to be in an NHS hospital as I'm high risk and baby may have to be dragged out early and need scbu. But after terrible experience of living in the RLH for 3 weeks last time I am determined that I am going private. (insurance will pay) But we are moving to Hertfordshire as well and there are no private maternity wards in the whole county. So looks like I could be forced to come back into London to go to Kings or Queen Mary's

ooh congratulations twiglett

I saw my dr today and mentioned how I've had doubts over whether or not the dr did say female or if I just imagined it, see a message lower down about my ramblings on this subject if you missed it first time anyone. Anyway dr said to ask midwife next week as she'll be able to access my hospital files but the dr can't. So that's what I'm going to do. I'm 99.9% certain that he said girl though, lol

GeorginaA · 14/01/2004 21:33

How really exciting for you all I've got my scan on the 22nd and I am really looking forward to it... will let you all know whether boy or girl in due course...

Still feeling a bit up and down at the moment. Getting back into normal routines after Christmas has helped chase some of the blues away, but I'm left feeling very lethargic. Daytime is fine because I just get on with things for ds' sake and we do have a lot of fun, but in the evenings I just can't be bothered to do anything even veg properly. Probably just tiredness ... still can't find a comfy position to go to sleep in at night, and I'm only 21 weeks!! How on earth am I going to cope with the sleep deprivation at 38 weeks?!

Egypt · 14/01/2004 22:02

Hi all, it's all hotting up! Great news Twiglett and Linnet. I wonder what we're having, and i do have a subconscious 'boy' in my brain. Wouldnt know what to do with them though!!!

prufrock · 14/01/2004 23:29

twiglett if it ws just afterwards I wouldn't have a problem, but I'll probably be in before and I have horrid memories of a 4 bed room with 6 beds in it due to refurbishment. No TV/radio, no a/c or even fans (over a heatwave) I'm sure that teh miserable state I was in was more dangerous to my health than the liver problem.

Georgina - did you ever get a long pillow? Mine really is teh only way I'm managing to get comfy at the moment.

GeorginaA · 15/01/2004 08:44

As a seasoned veteran of mum of a little boy, I can assure you Egypt that you soon work it all out Now, I can't imagine knowing what to do with a little girl!!!

No, prufrock, I didn't We're a bit broke after Christmas and I haven't felt able to justify the cost and there's so many other things we need to buy at the moment (ds needs new shoes and new wellies... things to buy for the new baby etc...) - am regretting it though.

Bozza · 15/01/2004 09:42

I find the best way to sleep is to chuck DH onto the sofabed and have the whole bed to myself with an ordinary pillow between my legs/under the bump. Only thing is I don't really chuck him out - I wait until I've fidgeted about and heavy breathed (nose still not clear)etc enough for him to bail out - 4.30 am this morning.

Egypt · 15/01/2004 18:51

glad its not just me with the stuffy nose. i sniff all night and dh snores. he cant sleep for me and i cant sleep for him.. however its always me that ends up moving into the spare room! men!

Twiglett i feel exactly the same way, three year old ds and little girl on the way. I had kind of wanted another little boy so they could charge around together and am totally unprepared for a little girl. Maybe she'll charge around too. I'm glad I know now though so I can get used to the idea

Twiglett dead right that we understand. I have posted today on your other thread about the coughing/pelvic floor. I think my nose is now as clear as it is going to get during pregnancy but its always stuffed up at night and lung capacity starting to reduce. Egypt I think that with our alternative being an on-the-floor type sofabed DH would feel guilty. Spent a week on the settee though when I had bad cough over Christmas.

Egypt · 20/01/2004 18:35

think my nose is getting stuffier by the day.
last night was the first in a while that i didnt go into spare room or sofa. dh was v v pleased with himself in the morning when he realised. bless. he said 'i tried really really hard not to snore!' Ahhh,
better keep it up!
