  1. I've lost count of the number of people whose first question is 'was it planned?'

Yes it was! and like I'd tell you if it wasn't!! Even DP's ex-wife asked this when he told her Grin

We've been together for 3 years and lived together for 2 so it's not like we met 3 weeks ago on mysinglefriend.com!

  1. People asking if we want a boy or a girl.. I'm pretty sure you get what you're given so it's pretty pointless!!

First time round, when I said I was due in September a particularly vulgar friend announced to the whole pub that DH and I "had been shagging at Christmas".

I got loads of comments, as I fell pregnant just over 3 months after giving birth so when I went back to work I was ready to drop again, and everyone, absolutely everyone, just had to say something... and they were ALL SO FUNNY. Not. Grrrr. A few pointed remarks about "making the most of maternity leave etc".

My sister, who is very very stupid indeed decided (at Christmas meal) to pick a fight about how women shouldn't be allowed maternity leave etc. Grrr.

Oh, and not strictly on point, but the day I got home with DS1 (actually hadn't got out of the car) when my neighbour ran over to tell us that a friend of hers' baby had died aged 4 weeks. Which clearly is utterly awful, and I cannot imagine it, but why she felt she had to RUN out of her house when she saw us pull up to tell us this when we were clearly just returning from the hospital is somewhat extraordinary. I'm not insensitive, but I did spend the next 3 months basically staring at my baby in his cot whilst he slept.....

linziluv · 05/10/2010 18:21

Lol...I hate the "you're huge" comments...you wouldnt dream of saying that to a non pregnant woman so why on earth do these people think it's appropriate to be so personal!
One of my DP's friends walked in and laughed "god "you're a right fatty!!"...needless to say I cried for hours!!
My other inappropriate moan is the amount of strangers who think it's ok to prod and stroke my belly!! It is not so please move away from me!
Another friend said I should be careful about weight gain as apparently fat and pregnant is ok but afterwards im just fat with a baby! Cheers!

laurenamium · 05/10/2010 18:21

Iv also been asked who the father was (we split up when I told him I was pregnant) and then when I explain this Iv even had 'are you going to chase him for maintenance then?' Shock

MrsMogwai · 05/10/2010 19:51

My boss is generally quite inappropriate at the best of times, so when it came to the time where I had to tell the team, I was expecting something from her.

So, in front of 10 people, she asks what exactly I was doing when it (the conception) happened. I replied that I wasn't sure as I was asleep! Shut her up momentarily and stopped my colleagues from cringing even more.

cowboylover · 05/10/2010 20:01

I think its the different reactions that me and DH get.

I get 'congratulations' and 'how are feeling' where as my DH gets 'Well Done!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 05/10/2010 21:31

LOL

I get "are you sure there aren't two in there" a lot. Nope, it's called EDS. Go away.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 06/10/2010 08:38

A female collegue asked me yesterday if "we" were having another baby, in the same tone my DH would ask me that.. "I don't know about you, but I am having another, not with you though."

When I was about to go into hospital for induction with DS, my SIL told me about this woman that someone she knows knows lost her twins in labour.

Are you SURE you're only 6/7/8 months? You look full term!
Are you sure you are 7 months? You're tiny!
You are going to have a huge/tiny baby!

Hypnobirthing? You are going to scream for an epidural!

Why can't people mind their own business?

Threelittleducks · 06/10/2010 09:30

Ah yeah, the conception story.

Why is it that everyone wants to know precisely when baby was concieved?
Worse, actually, they just work it out themselves and delare it ceremoniously somewhere, usually in a crowd.

FIL was biggest surprise for us.
Mainly because he is usually quite reserved.
He does take great delight in telling visitors (mainly other IL family who come through for visits periodically)that DS 'should have been called Florence you know'.
And having a right old giggle about the fact that 'that budget holiday is the most expensive holiday you'll ever have'.

Dh bought me a budget weekend to Florence for xmas the year before ds was born.

Admittedly it wouldn't be so bad if he didn't repeat it EVERY time we had company. Ds is 2 now.

I have a woman, someone fairly close to me, who has delighted in telling me at every stage of my pregnancy so far (23+4) that she knows someone who has miscarried or lost baby at that particular stage of their pregnancy Hmm I appreciate that terrible things do happen to some ladies and my heart breaks for them but it is highly inappropriate to consistently tell a pregnant woman this negative information, especially one who is a complete neurotic loon anyway quite anxious about her own pregnancy Confused

MissCKitty · 06/10/2010 09:51

oooops that didn't work did it?!?? lol but you get what i mean Grin

laurenamium · 06/10/2010 10:27

ohh yess I was written a list of pros and cons for having a baby?! accompanied with a list of private abortion clinics with 'I'll pay' written underneath from my nana :-o

lucielooo · 06/10/2010 10:31

Shock Shock Shock laurenamium too

My sister found herself somewhat unexpectedly pregnant (she is and always has been very anti-abortion) and I was amazed at the pressure she came under for various members of the family not to have the baby. Funnily enough they all absolutely dote on her daughter now!

bundlebelly · 06/10/2010 10:35

How can people be so horrible. The sad thing is, in their own heads you can imagine them thinking that they are 'helping' or saying the right thing!

We just got a lot of 'but where is it going to sleep?' and 'you are going to be so busy and tired!' then people would remember to say congratulations.
The answers for me was 'in a cot'
and 'I already am'!

Shock at some of the cruel things people say - some of the things are so lacking in basic human empathy that it is shocking and perverse!

MadAboutQuavers · 06/10/2010 11:39

A new one - just last night! Speaking on the phone to darling father Hmm

D: So, how are you feeling about the birth itself?
Me: I'm ok, actually. I've got my head around what sort of pain relief I'd prefer, etc.
D: Well, you'll be fine, you're a big lass anyway, and big boned, not like your sister...
Me: Er, do you really think I'm a "big lass/big boned"?
D: Oh yes! It'll stand you in good stead now...

I'm 35+4. Non-pregnant, I'm a size 12. I've put 1 stone and 11 pounds on so far. Confused

(Sister is a recovered anorexic, btw)

I'm pleased to say I laughed at him, rather than telling him to get stuffed (which I would normally do)! Grin

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 06/10/2010 15:12

wow, MAQ, just wow. and everyone who had abortion-mad relatives. My mum tried to persuade me to have a termination for the first 5 weeks of my pg with DS, now she wouldn't be without him.

Swazzee · 06/10/2010 16:11

This thread has made me chuckle. I'm having twins and lost count of the amount of people who asked if I've had IVF. (Actually, no, and we weren't even planning to get pregnant either). Anyone would think twins didn't exist before IVF.

At work the other day a colleague expressed surprise that I was making myself and some others a coffee and declared that when she was as far along as I am (31 weeks at the time) she wouldn't have been able to make it to the kitchen. I made it to work didn't I? Why would a few extra paces to the kitchen be a problem???!

yellowflowers · 06/10/2010 16:30

a woman in starbucks the other day when I ordered a cappucino said 'presumably you want decaf' and looked at my tummy. Er, no, I said, fully strength please (was almost tempted to add an extra shot for a laugh) but she rescued it by saying that when she was pregnant caffeine made her go crazy.

people seem very keen to tell me about their birth horror stories.

TooBlessedToBeStressed · 06/10/2010 20:07

oh i haven't read the thread through but what about interracial couples?when i said i was pregnant, all i heard was

'oh,your child is going to be this colour and have such and such eyes'

'is your husband happy about the baby'?,it was our first pregnancy'
'what does your family think?do you think they will like the baby as much as they would have like it if it was of the same colour as yours?honestly

then a male collegue said i looked like a well fed dolphin, this made me laugh though

the a female co worker who told anyone who cared to listen that she was sure i was having a boy, when asked why she thought that,at a christmas dinner, she said bcoz when she was pregnant with her girl, she looked delicious, then she said TooBlessed has circles under her eyes, there is NO way she can be carrying a girl, girls are nicer to their mothers than boys, the silence after she said that was priceless, everyone was pissed off on my behalf, when the baby came and i showed her my DD,she denied ever saying that it would be a boy:o

TooBlessedToBeStressed · 06/10/2010 20:08

not she thought that, but she said that, sorry for the typos

Jenni363 · 07/10/2010 20:25

Zahara I got the same comment from a polish colleague... ha ha.. very funny!

I am also getting comments about my size every day at work! I'm 35 weeks and my bump is large I guess but luckily I havent gained weight in "other parts"... But every day I get "OMG are you sure there's only one baby", "god you are bursting out of that (maternity) dress"... "What are you wearing there - a tent for two"...

I would never comment on anybody's size in the first place, so what gives people the right to do it on daily basis? Hmm

Jenni363 · 07/10/2010 20:35

Ah and a random guy at a bus stop asked me "who ate all donuts" which I thought was quite funny actually! Grin
