Can I join you ladies too? Still very nervous, but since there are a few in the same boat maybe i'll fit in...
I'm about 9 weeks with number 2, had a scan on monday which showed baby blob with heartbeat. That reassured me for a few days but am back to panicking again!
I had a mmc in may, found out at my 12 week scan that baby had died at 6 weeks, no real warning signs so really scared the same will happen again despite the 'reassurance' scan!
Sorry for long opening post! Looking forward to getting to know you all,

Gi1da · 14/11/2010 14:31

Hello everyone - what a lot to catch up on!

Welcome and congratulations to Inbetweener wishing you a peaceful next 9 months Smile

Alba how wonderful you'll have Lia with you. Did you have a doula with you for your son too? PS - Have you managed to hear any more of the hypnotherapy cd than the start and finish yet Smile? Mind you that does sound like you are absorbing it if you wake up for the end as instructed. Do you come round feeling calm and relaxed?

I'm not sure if a doula is something I should have organised or if I will be ok with the community midwifes. DH bless him will be fairly useless as he hates it if I'm even a little bit unwell, and can't watch Holby City for the gore. We have 6 communty midwives, so far I have met 3 and they've all been really nice so I figured they should be helpful for the home birth. I have my fingers crossed it will be one mw in particular but I'll get whoever is on shift at the time.

Has anyone else had a homebirth with just the community midwives?

Upduffy Yup I'm a Humphophile too! Just realised all my "I'm Sorry.." are on cassette and I don't have a tape player in the house so will download some. Friend just lent me a bag full of dvd box sets to watch on bf duty / early labour - one is mama Mia so maybe I will give birth to singalonga Abba!

Sparkly I'm so sorry to hear what a tough time you're having. I can't offer any sensible advice but I do wish you well and hope that you find some ways to alleviate the pain and rest up comfortably over the coming weeks.

Big wave to Jolls, hope all is well with you. Miss you and hope to see you back here soon.

Hello Bunny how's tricks?

I nearly forgot, for all acupuncture fans, my chap recommends checking out this lady from New Zealand, Debra Betts, who is a specialist in acupuncture and childbirth - there is some great info plus downloadable acupressure pain relief booklet on her website:

Website here
Download booklet here

On my last session with him before birth he's going to mark the points on me with permanent pen so DH can be clear on where to press!!

Happy good luck with the turning, be careful hanging off that sofa! Grin

Magic ooh so sorry to hear of the OUCHBURN Sad. I've been swigging gaviscon, can only imagine how horrid it must be with doublebabas bubbling away. Would also say that the acupuncture really helped - kept it away for about a week after each appointment.

Northern congrats on news of your little boy! I'm quite envious of those who found out the sex, it cuts the naming stress in half!

Loopsy and Clareanna thank you so much for your replies on slings. I went for a mobi (ebay) since it seemed really simple. My logic was that women in countries where they don't have all our modern stuff seem to manage with babies strapped in simple long cloths, so I thought it must be ok. I'll be practising tying it over the next couple of weeks!

Crochet welcome welcome. Can totally sympathise with the waiting to get past previous dates. Nothing really helps other than keeping busy, but the time WILL pass. (And then it jsut keeps passing and before you know it you're staring the top of the list in the face and thinking oo-er this has to get out somehow...) We do have a rather large kipper to slap you with to distract you from the waiting angst, though I think its been a while since it was last swung...

KER-SLAAAP <

Osch congrats on your 20 week scan, such lovely news Smile.

Meita, do they not routinely test for strep B? Is this something we should go and ask our doctors / midwives for? I haven't even heard this mentioned before. How's lovely Ianto doing?

Viv how's it going? I have no idea how much weight I've put on or how quickly because I don't own scales. Makes life much simpler!

Malteaser oh sod the weight, this is not the time to worry about it - it's a time for growing! Personally I'm fully enjoying walking about with my belly proudly stuck out instead of trying to hold it in - I shall miss my bump!! BFing and walking afterwards should help it go again (or so I am going to believe - and no-one tell me otherwise please!)

Muse how's it going - less sickiness yet? I do hope so, you deserve a break by now!

Toomt blimey you're having to work late - I hope you don't come early so you still have those two weeks to relax first!

Louise a big hug for you. So difficult when friends fall pg. I hope you find a way to cope over time. Everyone will understand how hard it is.

So this week coming is my last at work (thanks to taking a stack of holidays). My last day should be Thursday but they've been in denial a bit over my cover and I have a lot to finish as well as writing hand over notes so I may end up going in on Friday too. That's it though. WOOO HOOOO!!! Am tired and feel its time to stop - but I think it may take me a while to get used to being at home so much...

Sorry for those I've missed, wishing all of you well xx

Gi1da · 14/11/2010 14:35

Welcome to Appleblossoms too. Totally understand the nerves. Happy to extend the fish slapping (see previous post), though I might need to sit down for five minutes first to get my breath back after whopping Crochet... Smile

VivClicquot · 14/11/2010 15:50

Afternoon ladies x

Quick post from me to say hi - it's mine and DH's first wedding anniversary today but he's at the match, while I'm having to do a little bit of work because of a certain holiday park that's in administration. Sigh. Hopefully he'll be back soon, as we're planning on going out for a late lunch.

Welcome to appleblossoms and inbetweener - hope you have a very dull and uneventful eight months ahead.

sparkly - sounds like you're having a tough time of it, so try and keep your chin up lovely. I believe hot baths work wonders, so keep having regular dips, and look after yourself.

A colleague has just been diagnosed with SPD too, but she's (only) around the 25 week mark - I feel so sorry for her as she's still got such a long way to go.

Had a horrendous dream last night where I went into labour at this stage in the pg, but amazingly, the baby survived and so I had this tiny doll-like boy. Oh and my BIL cut the cord.

Anyway, love to everyone else - hope you're all having lovely Sundays.

Viv xxx

HappyGirl1 · 14/11/2010 15:54

Welcome Appleblossoms - this is a lovely thread with wonderful support from all of these great ladies. It's such a tough time but you will get through it.

Gilda enjoy your last week in work. I only finished on Friday and already I'm wondering what I'm going to do with myself every day!

Muser congrats on being 25 weeks!! Welllll over half way now Smile

Sparkly so sorry to hear about your SPD, that's really really tough, it sounds so hard. Really hope the physio tomorrow can help somewhat.

DH here thinks baby may have moved, he seems to think top of my bump feels different to yesterday.. I'm kind of in agreement but don't want to get my hopes up. Now don't know whether to do some funny sofa / stairs positions this evening in case it turns back. tricky to know. I don't think it has turned though as surely I would have felt more of a big big big movement then? I know how silly this sounds but it's more for DH that I'd love to have a natural labour, like i'd prefer not to have a caesarean also but if i have to, i have to, but DH has been so good about coming to all these NCT classes etc and he's ready to help out in labour. He's just great and even now is staying so positive. Ah i'm just being silly, all that matters is that baby is okay hopefully.

Does anyone else find they do one task and then need a rest!? I spent like an hour cleaning bathrooms and then was like right ok i need a sit, it's crazy!

Got some crunchies here if anyone fancies one!

Meita · 14/11/2010 16:25

Hi Gi1da, what a monster post! Well done on the name-checking!

Regarding group B strep, in many countries it is routinely checked for, but not in the UK; though in some PCTs they do.
If the NHS doesn't test you routinely, and won't even if you enquire about it, you can have a private test (which is more accurate anyway). Though it only makes sense about 5 weeks before you are due, as these buggers come and go - having tested positive or negative at any particular time does not necessarily mean you will have them (or not) when you give birth.
If you do have GBS 5 weeks before your edd, the GBS support society recommends that you should be offered IV antibiotics during labour, or as soon as your waters break. That way, the risk of passing the bug on to your baby is very significantly reduced.
Now, I have to say that there is some debate about this. The major draw-back is that having IV antibiotics during labour might affect the birth process. For instance, although it is possible to have waterproof cannulas, many hospitals won't let you have a waterbirth if you're having IV antibiotics. Also, not everyone by far who has GBS will pass it on to their babies (I think it is about 1 in 500 if untreated). Treating everyone who has GBS with ABs would mean that in effect, many many women get ABs unnecessarily. So, for example, a NCT friend of mine found out after birth that she was GBS positive. She had a straightforward, quick labour and birth and her baby was perfectly healthy. If she had known beforehand, she might have been more worried or doctors might have been more quick to intervene, and things might not have gone so well.
On the other hand, as Ianto was the one in 500 who did get infected, I wish I had known about it all beforehand. Of course, that is easy to say in hindsight. However, I think I would have liked to be able to make an informed choice. So, given that my waters broke 24h before contractions started, the risk of infection was much much higher and I might have chosen to take the ABs. But if they hadn't broken until I was in labour, I might have chosen not to take them. Maybe I would have changed my mind once I realised that labour would be very long (as I was not dilating) and thus that the risk would be increased. But as it was, I didn't know anything about it all until I was told "we need to take your baby away right now to paediatrics to treat him because he appears to have an infection" about 1h after he was born, and I was lying there immobile due to the topped-up epidural (because of EMCS). Not the best conditions for bonding or for establishing BFeeding...

Anyway, there is lots of information on www.gbss.org.uk/ and at the end of the day, you need to decide for yourself if you want to know if you have GBS and potentially be treated for it, or if you'd rather remain in blissful ignorance. Given that the risk of passing the infection to your baby is, at 1 to 500, lower than many people's risk of having a baby with DS, you might very reasonably decide that you don't want to know. On the other hand, given that 1 in 10 babies who get GBS die from it, another 40% or so have long term effects such as cerebral palsy, hearing or sight loss, and learning difficulties, and nobody quite knows how many stillbirths are caused by it, you might just as reasonably decide that you do wish to know.

Sorry for the long post on a rather unhappy topic - I fear I got carried away a bit. Must be because it's quite close to my heart!

Ianto is doing very well, thanks! He will be 12 weeks old tomorrow, and getting his second set of immunisations - how time flies! On the other hand, I seem to have hit the point where the novelty and excitement is wearing off, and I'm finding it harder and harder to get myself motivated to go out and do things and meet people. Not the least because it gets dark so soon these days. Ah well - small worries and over all I'm just so grateful to have Ianto with us, well and healthy and, most of the times, a very happy baby. :)

AlbaDeTamble · 14/11/2010 16:30

ok, 2 minute break from work I should be doing... Happy felt like my bump was being stretched sideways whilst he turned, just like BunnyBaby described too but it may have happened whilst you were asleep. do you have a MW appointment soon to be sure? If so, maybe don't do anything else till then.

Gilda, my 3 yr old loves mamma mia -- he demands the CD when we're in the car, listens to it on loop when falling asleep, and sings most of the songs word for word the way most kids sing nursery rhymes... Blush

welcome to appleblossom and waves to Viv I hate working on a Sunday... but really tough if it's your anniversary too hope you have a lovely evening to make up for it

AlbaDeTamble · 14/11/2010 16:35

Wow, Meita, what a fabulous primer on Group B strep! I was reading up on it, and asked my midwife who basically told me a lot of what you've said -- she reckoned since it's so likely you can get it between testing and going into labour, even in just a few weeks, in her opinion probably better to assume it's possible rather than testing negative and being confident when in fact you could be infected... that seemed to make sense to me, though if labour long or waters broken for some time, as you said, worth huge vigilance, and possibly ABs just in case.

I'm so glad Ianto is fit and well Smile

HappyGirl1 · 14/11/2010 16:47

ALba that's exactly why I think it's just wishful thinking because I really haven't felt anything of the unusual variety. he/she is moving lots but not anything like a turn, but as you said it could have been while i was asleep. We have a full scan tomorrow, a growth scan and one to check position of baby. Been trying not to worry about the growth side of it but I'm starting to now it's getting closer. Hopefully baby is okay. That's all that ultimately matters.

Meita that's such useful information about Strep B. Thanks so much for taking the time to send that through to us. Really really glad to hear that Ianto is still doing so well.

Viv hope you are finished work and have a lovely afternoon/evening with your DH Smile

toomuchteaching · 14/11/2010 20:32

Hello all, sorry I've been a bit absent, had a super hectic week at work and then have had friends to stay for the weekend, and I can tell you we're not doing that again any time soon, I'm totally knackered.

Big welcome to appleblossoms, inbetweener and crochet... lovely to have some new faces and I hope you all have very quiet and uneventful pregnancies. Those first few weeks are the worst, not that the worrying disappears of course, but we've all been there so come and chat and ask the questions that seem silly and moan, we're all very used to it! Sorry for the rubbish midwife experience too, I'm not sure I could handle having one who wasn't sympathetic about my history, so change if it gets to you.

Gi1da's summed it up when she says every day drags for weeks, and then suddenly it starts going so fast and you're up the list without noticing. And we still haven't got a single thing organised... aaaah. Is there a fish slap for that? Enjoy the feeling of finishing work Gi1da!

Sparkly rubbish about your SPD, I'm sorry. Hope you can find little things that cheer you up and that the physio does some good.

Happy anniversary Viv, hope you got your late lunch! I too had a horrible dream last night that involved bambino being born hands first (which I discovered on a random trip to the loo at work) .

Listened to my natal hypno CD for the first time, and am with you Alba, I've only heard the first half. Got a shock in bed when my pod shuffled onto something entirely inappropriate!

Good luck to all those hanging off sofas and just generally wiggling their bums in the air. I have to admit I think the idea of crawling down our stairs head first is utterly terrifying, so good work! And congrats to those with newly discovered blue and pink bumps... I'm still enjoying not knowing, but it would make this name lark a lot easier so am a little bit Envy.

Magic16 hope your supper is settled this evening!

Right, apologies to everyone I've missed... but sending some leftover apple and blackberry crumble your way. Have a lovely evening all.

Hi all, sorry haven't posted much recently- been feeling a bit crap- I feel like I've been pregnant for ever- especially as there are so many events at this time of year that just remind me that I was pregnant this time last year too Sad

Loving the image of lots of you hanging off the end of the sofa while you watch x factor though!!!

Welcme to inbetweener appleblossom and crochet may the weeks until your scans speed by- hope you're not feeling too sick...

Re GroupB Strep- I would strongly recommend getting tested if you aren't offered it routinely, and then making sure you get iv antibiotics during labour... I know it's about making an informed choice, but I have had a friend who was very poorly after it was undiagnosed and her baby has learning difficulties as a result, and another friend who wasn't given iv antibiotics in time as the mws were busy so she didn't have them for long enough during labour. Her son was fine, until he was 9 weeks old when he got meningitis caused by GroupB. He pulled through but it was a awful time for them. I don't want to alarm you with horror stories on a Sunday night, but it is a topic I feel very strongly about. Anyhoo- lecture over!!!

clareanna · 14/11/2010 21:40

meita meant to say - can't believe ianto is 12 weeks already!!! Lovely to hear from you

Meita · 14/11/2010 23:16

Glad to do my little bit to raise awareness about GBS. Even though some might prefer not to be tested, I think everyone should at least know about it and what the pros and cons are. Loopy probably I can manage to be balanced thanks to Ianto being well and not affected too much by it all. I suppose I would argue differently if he hadn't been one of the lucky 50%. (Thanks for the encouragement :) ) Clareanna is absolutely right I think - the risks are quite significant. And those risk figures are for when babies are treated appropriately immediately - if the infection is missed and goes untreated, outcomes are much worse. My MooL (mother out-of-law, DP's mum) insists that "this all" wouldn't have happened in Switzerland, as they do routine checks; she has quite a low opinion of the NHS now.
Alba I'm no expert but according to the GBSS website the NHS tests aren't very good, but the private ones are hugely predictive and reliable if taken 5 weeks before EDD. Just a thought.

waves to everyone!

LeeWT · 14/11/2010 23:41

Hi all sorry for not posting in ages but andrew has colic/reflux so alot of my time is spent pacing the floors..

He's almost 7 weeks now and is 11lbs 11 oz already- hard to believe some babies are born that weight!

To those feeling like their pregnancy is going on forever, I sympathize. I was pregnant on and off from march 09 - September 10 I think only giraffes can rival that! So when you've had a mc (or two) itreally does feel like forever.
I'm trying to get my body and life back in order and even joined weightwatchers the other day. It's hard with sleep deprivation and the miserable dark nights but I know I'll feel so much better if I can fit in my own clothes.

magic how bad is the heartburn? Mine was horrendous for both my pregnancies but because it was worse this time my doc prescribed losec. Totally harmless to babby and I can honestly say it changed my quality of life. I took it from 31 weeks and gone were the chalky rennies and late night gaviscon swigging. With dd by the end I was miserable with it whereas this time it didn't affect me at all. Just thought I'd mention it if I haven't already as I know how miserable it can be..

Louise how are you doing hon? Words fail me every time I see your posts as it is all so unfair but you strike me as a very strong person. You are still georgies mummy and you did everything you could for her. I know it doesn't feel like it now and all of us are blown away by your bravery.

meita what you said about the dark nights and the novelty etc strikes a cord from when I had my little girl. With your first baby it's just the two of you and I think it can be quite lonely and the days can be verylong. As hard as things are with Andrews reflux and the amount of crying he does I'm very glad to have dd as company. Her needs actually put a shape on the day in terms of picking her up from preschool etc and the days fly more. The only thing that helps me is getting out every day otherwise all I see in the house is things that need doing that I don't want to do!!

Welcome to all the newbies! This is the place to be :-)

sorry for not name checking everyone else though I do check in every couple days on my phone it's hard to find the time to post. Andrew is farting away in his Moses basket as we speak so I'm biding time until the first night feed!

Ciao bellas!

Unbuffy · 15/11/2010 11:15

Blimey busy thread yesterday - soo much to catch up on!

Not a lot happening here, just poking me head around the door really! Really bad one sided pelvic pain again today, also exhaustion due to inability to sleep caused mostly by this (wakes me up at every slight motion, and i don't stay still at night). Also loose wotsits again (actually that's a really nasty image...) and nausea. But. Come Wednesday dh has his assessment at work and after that I have free reign apparently - nice eh?! Keep trying to work out if bababean is back-to-back or the other way around - tummy so full it's hard to tell! It seems to have about 8 legs - feeling very sorry for magic and the spiderbabies...

Any suggestions on the hip/back aggers gratefully recieved!

Lovely to hear from lovely postgrads, glad all is going okay with you x

Welcome to appleblossoms and inbetweener, hope it's all very boring for you for the next few months

Hugs to Clareanna, hope you feel better soon lovely

big hi's all round else, will try to catch up proply when brian in gear / dd not wailing all everywhere!

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 15/11/2010 11:45

Hi ladies,

Still have heartburn, taking Gaviscon after your brekkie is not nice I am seeing the m/w tomorrow after my anomaly scan and all being good will speak to her then. I had it with DD1 and took the grin and bare it approach helped with gaviscon but this is horrible as I have already had it for weeks and still have at least 16 weeks to go. Thanks for the tip LeeWT, I can't believe your little man is almost 7 weeks! Time has flown. Sorry to hear he has reflux, I know how tiring this can be.......and Meita 12 weeks old! WOW!

Have read all your posts re GBS with interest as I was tested for this loads due to the bleeding, after my waters broke with DD2 & after she was born but it was never picked up. Because I had chorioamnioitis and under the infection/2nd trimester loss dude at St Gs I have already had an early test for it with the twins which again was negative and I am sure they plan to test me again for it just to rule out but I am going to double check and insist if they don't plan to test. I am assuming too that I will have IV antibiotics anyway if I am having a c-sec???? Does that cover it?

Hope you are feeling better today Clareanna! Does feel like a long slog some days eh? x Loopsy I hope this morning wasn't too stressful getting ready for the school run?!

Fish slap for ToomuchTEACHING (got it right today!) hope you have a pen and paper at the ready to do you list!

Hope you had a lovely anniversary Viv and what is it with those crazy pregnant dreams? I have had a few nutty ones.

Happy last week at work Gi1da!

Welcome crochet appleblossom and inbetweener!

Hugs to Louise and big waves to Happygirl Alba Muser Unbuff Sparkly and anyone I have missed!

Thanks for all your sympathy, encouragement and good wishes! Hi inbetweener and appleblossoms, it's a good place to be.

Just back from the physio, she thinks I don't have true SPD- hurrah -but basically my bum is unbalanced and the deep muscle on one side is 'angry and ineffective' (!) at supporting the extra weight, so pulls at the front. So I have a nice support belt to wear, some exercises to do and hopefully she says there'll be some improvement in a week or so if I do them enough :) Most encouragingly, as soon as kickster arrives it should all be fine (good as I'd been worrying about it not going as I know true SPD can linger for a while). So feeling a bit more positive here at last!

Unbuffs I agree, G&B's hot choc is truly amazing stuff. Shortbread is on offer everywhere too ready for xmas, so my mid afternoon pick up is now both :) I am trying to avoid the cream though, I love dairy too much (don't think this baby will be calcium deficient!) Hope you're doing ok at the top of the list :)

Viv, dream sounds a bit scary I think, but hot baths good. I'm getting a bit fed up with preg dreams, DH has started having some weird dreams too though so not alone! I dreamt about xmas next year (I think!) last night, we had a small blonde boy sitting on the floor. Possibly the nicest preg dream I've had so far, though as soon as I told DH he asked what his name was. We think we've got a name but I'm not 100% yet.

Gilda with you on the scales!

Nice to hear from Meita and Lee, can't believe how old your babies are now!

Magic LOL at spiderbabies!

Waves to everyone else, have a good evening x

Hi Ladies,

How are you?

Sparkly good news you don't have full on SPD but hope your exercises and belt start to work soon and you aren't as uncomfortable.

Magic8 hope your scan goes well and you get to ask about the heartburn too. Best of luck for tomorrow, hope the scan goes really really well and babies are good Smile

Gilda not long now til you have free reign!! Getting super super close now!

Growth scan today went v well, baby measuring well but still breech. Having an ECV on Friday so we'll see how that goes.

sparkly hope you are feeling more positive now there may be something you can to to ease the pain? Love the idea that your butt is unbalanced, angry and ineffective... sounds like how I feel most of the time Grin
I had some one-sided butt and pelvis probs after DS was born (won't go into details) and physio helped massively - hope you're not too tired to do the exercises! my pregnancy yoga DVD keeps glaring at me, still haven't managed to open the box!

Happy glad growth scan all ok, looks like there will be more hanging off the end of the sofa for you - hope happybaby moves soon.

magicspidermummy LOL! can you have Gaviscon on cornflakes?!

I thought it was probably time for a new thread. What else would I be going at 4.27am on a Tuesday morning? I hope the link works, it's been a bit of a challenge using my phone!
