Hi everyone,
Thought I would start a thread for all us mums to be who are due in May 2011 so that we can support each other. xx

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Is anyone else struggling with sleep - it's 4am and I'm awake and I need to be up at 06:30? :(

I can sleep for about 4 hours then I wake up and then I'm either wide awake stressing about work/mortgages etc or sleep on and off for an hour or so at a time until morning.

Justtrying · 15/02/2011 08:51

Labmonkey I too am struggling getting enough sleep, with waking on average every 2.5 hours for the loo. Then lying awake worrying thinking about any number of things. Frustrating at 5 am when the alarm is set for 6. Think a snooze is called for this afternoon once i finish work.
I see the midwife again tomorrow to see if i'm still measuring too large for dates (was 5cm to large 2weeks ago) if so she will refer me for a scan and possible a GTT. However my bump seems to be sitting a bit lower now, perhaps little one has turned, kicks are in a different place too.
Looking forward to a bit of girly/ baby shopping with my sis who is off next week on halfterm (she's a teacher).Smile

trixie123 · 15/02/2011 08:58

arrrggghh cramp! At night, gradually getting worse. Used to be just in my feet, then ankles, now is creeping up toward knee. Trying to combine leaping out of bed to hobble about for relief with not waking up DP or DS.
Justtrying the loo thing is a total pain, especially as half the time when you get there you don;t really need to go, just feels like you do so you can't ignore it.

JenniferR · 15/02/2011 08:59

HI Labmonkey

I've started to wake up through the night too. The best thing that I've found is to get up for a few mins and then go back to bed. Am also waking up with the side I'm sleeping on completely numb which isn't fun! Then when have to turn around it's a major task, all this whilst not trying to wake hubbie :)

Clarabella- your folks live in Yorkshire too? I recall that you also moved to Glasgow about 11 years ago. I'm exactly the same! Hope you're doing well. I've still not been able to find alternative aquanatal classes to Scotsoun but think I'm just going to go swimming instead. Although with the icy weather it takes a lot of will power to leave the house in the evening!!!

Ladies I need your help! I've not been on this thread for ages but have been following all our endeavours closely (my cramp is merry hell...I was actually screaming and bellowing the other night it was so bad, and then I couldn't sleep again for worrying that if I can't cope with the pain of cramp, how the eff will I get a baby out of my area...!) and now I have a burning question. I'm 29+3, babba is due on first of May and after having a number of frankly disappointing midwife appointments, I now think she may have ballsed up. I've got 2 friends at wrk who are pg, one due March and onedue April and they have both had fasting glucose tests done at the hospital as part of their 28 week appointment. I've got my 28 weeker tomorrow but mw didn't mention anything at all about fasting, only that she would be taking a blood sample. Is this difference bcause of the local health authorities (they are in Tower Hamlets, I'm in the mighty mighty Lewisham)? Or do you think she's forgotten to tell me? I checked baby centre website and they said glucose test should take place between 24 and 28 weeks. Hmmmmmm...have any of you dudes had this test yet? Any light to shed on it? My app isn't til 1.45pm, so if it is a fasting one, she's a right meanie for making me not eat all morning when I'm at school with the tinies (aged 4 and 5). Whaddya think?

Kazmog · 15/02/2011 17:40

Hi there funny little katy, I was told that you only have the fasting glucose test if they have concerns about gestational diabetes and only one in 6 get tested. It can be done up to 30 weeks as I had it done last week in Wandsworth. Also they try and give you 8.30am appts and it took 2.5hours for me last week. Hope that this helps K

growing3rdbump · 15/02/2011 17:41

Hi Funky - I've never had fasting glucose test in my previous pregnancies - I think it is for people who are possibly measuring big (or have family history) and they are testing for gestational diabetes. It's not done routinely where I live.

I'm also stuggling with the sleep issue. Finally got the 3.5yr old staying in his own bed and enjoying a whole night of undisturbed bliss and now I'm so achy which after lying on whichever side for too long. I'm so glad haven't had the cramps this time round (yet). Only got that with my first pregnancy, so really hope to avoid it again... Hope I didn't speak too soon!

clarabella18 · 15/02/2011 19:29

Hi funky. Ditto what 3rd bump said. Don't think it's a routine test fo wouldn't worry too much about it. If you are concerned bring it up at your appt tomorrow.

As for all the ladies suffering from cramp, stock up on bananas and soda or tonic water. Can't remember exactly what it is that helps, think it might be potassium and quinine.

jeniffeR yep from Yorkshire, york to be exact moved to Clydebank in October 99. That's a heck of a coincidence! I know what you mean about the effort to go swimming. I haven't even been bothered to het my cossie out yet to see if it's possible to squeeze into!

LabMonkey · 16/02/2011 07:10

Another question for the more experienced amongst you...pants!

I know that I need big pants for after the birth but just how big? I'm normally a size 12 in that region but as my ass has grown and may soon acquire its own gravitational field I'm only just into my 14 jeans so how big will these pants have to be? I've read some places that say a couple of sizes up is fine and other say many sizes...so any suggestions?

Yes I am being over-organised but it makes me feel like I'm being prepared :)

Bubandbump · 16/02/2011 07:58

Funnylittlekaty,

Same here on the gtt test, I was measuring big for dates so got sent for the fasting version last week. I think there is a non fasting one which is only a 1 hour test instead so it could be that one you have been referred for.

I came back clear yesterday (yay) so having a big baby or my dates are slightly wrong (which I have a slight suspicion that they might be) - guess we'll find out in the next few months! But labmonkey, it means that I too am trying to be organised and get my bag sorted out just in case..I have bought 2 sizes up from my normal but guess they'll just have to stretch if not big enough!

ng1412 · 16/02/2011 08:54

Hey all, I was told at my previous appt with the m/w that I should have the GTT test as I have PCOS and it carries a higher risk. I am expecting it at my 28 week appt on Monday but not been told to fast or anything so not sure how it will work.

Regarding pants, I have bought some very large (and it has to be said unattractive) pants from Mothercare in a size above mine and I am hoping they will still fit in 12 weeks time. They are dual purpose as will also be able to use them as a tent afterwards too Wink.

Deciduousblonde · 16/02/2011 11:57

I just had my GTT test at 29 weeks..I have GD!!! yay for me..lol.

I had the test because of my age (43) and I had a previous undiagnosed GD..which didn't end too well. Glad I'm being looked after this time Smile

Justtrying · 16/02/2011 13:39

Managed a better nights sleep last night, so not as grumpy today. Have seen a different midwife today, no longer measuring too big for dates, hoorah. Had my bloods done too whilst I was at the surgery. Having a quiet afternoon with my feet up Smile.

funnylittlekaty · 16/02/2011 16:24

Thanks for all the replies, you're a very helpful bunch. Had midwife today and asked her. She said some areas do it as standard but as I had no pcs, previous still birth, bmi more than 30 or odd sugar in urine on 2 occasions, it wasn't necessary to have to test. She was actually dead nice today, which had me thinking maybe i've been a but hasty rubbishing her. She was on her own today, no student, so think that helped. And she finally measured my bump...which was 30 so I'm a bit on the big side but never mind. Didn't tell her about all the chocolate crispy cakes.....
As regards pants... I'm still in my old ones but will have to admit defeat soon. All the nice matchy ones are long gone...it's just the big period pants that are still proving their worth. Another trip to mothercare in order I think...
Thanks again xxxx

cowboylover · 16/02/2011 17:57

I think this bump measuring thing is a little 'one finger in the wind' as I was told I was measuring at 34 weeks when I was 24 but when I had a scan it turned out she was infact only 4 days bigger Hmm

I have been flaking out still and getting to be an annoying habbit as soon as I am too hot so will see what they say as got another appointment at the hospital tomorrow so will let you all know if there are any changes or buisness as usual!

On the pants front I am in the very sexy Asda 'full brief' in 2 sizes bigger than normal and only a fiver for 4 pairs I think as I cant bring myself to pay more for something I am going to take so much pleasure in throwing away in a few months.

Deciduousblonde · 16/02/2011 21:58

I agree about the bump measuring thing, considering I once had a bump which measured 46 Shock

JBrd · 16/02/2011 22:23

Glad to hear that some of you also think the bump measuring is a bit rubbish... I was told last week that I'm on the big side, but it seems so inacurate! Just measuring with a tape band and then looking at a chart? What about your height? I'm fairly tall, but that doesn't seem to factor into the equation Hmm

Of course, all the chocolate has got nothing to do with it whatsoever Grin

Bubandbump · 17/02/2011 08:02

I have heard loads of things about measuring the bump to be completely inaccurate but I had a scan last Thursday followed by a midwife appointment in the afternoon. The midwife did the measurements before looking at the scan results and came out with exactly the same at 2 weeks ahead. I am sure that is not the case for everyone though!

growing3rdbump · 18/02/2011 10:29

hmmm pants... well in 1st pregnancy I bought horrible over the bump ones from M&S in my normal size and they were fine. Didn't buy any new ones in 2nd pregnancy, which was slightly embarrassing after birth as they were pretty tight when worn with large Maternity pad Grin! This time I've just bought one size up in pants that do go up over belly a bit, (but are a bit on the tight side, so I tend to wear them under bump). I'm pretty certain these will be fine for after birth as I'll be able to stuff saggy tummy in to them...

Got 28wk appt on Tue and expecting them to say I'm looking big too... oh well.

Henrathoon · 21/02/2011 11:14

Hey Newmaman, I know what you mean about trying not to spend! It's hard though... Have been lucky to get a few hand me downs which will help massivly, ebay has been good for a few bits too.
Are you moving locally? Moving must be stressful, hope it goes ok. We're having a bathroom renovation, that's bad enough! lol
Just had the GTT end of last week, a bit nervous about the results too..... :)

cowboylover · 21/02/2011 17:44

How did you find the GTT Henrathoon? I have got mine this Friday and a bit nervous for some reason?!

Marabou · 21/02/2011 21:38

Hello everyone!

I only recently saw your thread and thought I'd join in, although I do realise the rest of you have been on here since last September, so sorry if I'm bugging in...

I'm due in mid May and regarding pants, I've so far gone up a size Wink.. Good luck everyone, it's getting tougher towards the finish line, but I'm sure we'll all be beaming by June Smile!

ng1412 · 22/02/2011 10:08

Welcome Marabou!

Well I went for my 28 week midwife appt yesterday, because I have moved house and changed health authority. I have been waiting for my booking in appointment at the Rosie in Cambridge but funnily enough they say they haven't received the paperwork despite my GP sending it three weeks ago. So I live in North Herts and would have to travel to Watford if I started to have contractions!

Crazy. Am hoping the Rosie can book me in pretty soon so I can at least not worry about which hospital I need to go to when the time comes.

Haven't had my GTT yet as again this was lost in the system so I am going to have it in 2 weeks time at the Lister in Stevenage.

What a palava.

BlueWellies · 22/02/2011 15:34

Hello there! Hi Marabou - we like to think this is a welcoming thread to anyone, but goodness knows there're so many people on here I've rather lost track of whos who and what's what, though pg brain doesn't help!

I've not been on here for ages, 27th Jan when I fell over, and have been keeping an occasional eye on it, but there's so much to do, and although time is going slowly... 11 weeks to due date... now home laptop time is spent looking at baby stuff and trying to get shelves and stuff for the house!

So, just to be clear from before - I am not a higher rate tax payer, and neither is my DH, and though we are both working now so comfortable, iwon't be like that if I don't go back to work! I know every one's situation is different, but right now to us thet riches resulting from being a higher rate tax payer seem just a dream!

Trying not to spend too much money on baby things either, but would be nice to have a few new things, esp as hoping for a couple more kids too if all goes well with this one, so I reckon we'll get the use out of things. We're lucky parents have offered to buy pram and car seat, so we can spend on other things. I've the offer of a nearly new glider crib to buy for around half the price - anyone used one of these rather than a giant (for a new born) cot - which takes up loads of bedroom space - or moses basket on stand (I'll knock it over!).

Pants - never mind those, though my options are limited and thanks for reminding me as Sainsburys mught be able to help when I shop tonight, it's the bras I can't cope with! Bought two new (one on one off as had gone up 3 cup sizes and well on way to 4th at 22 weeks. Will nursing bras fit if I get them now, or if I wait till after, then how do you get measured?

LabMonkey, JustTrrying, JenniferR etc. sleep deprovation - wasn't feeling very well at mw appt. last week but hadn't slept well for around 4 nights, and disturbed DH so he wasn't and so it went on. Seems to be better this week though, maybe less worried thoughts running through my head.

And, Cowboylover, also coping with OBEM, not sure we're enjoying it, but DH says it is definately less stressful now!

Anyway, got to go, MW is coming round to discuss home birth, and then we're hoping to go to local MW led centre to look round. Better get DH away from wallpaper stripping so he looks presentable, LOL all till next time

JenniferR · 22/02/2011 16:33

Hi everyone

For anyone still needing to buy a pram but keeping an eye on the pennies check out this great offer at TJ Hughes:

www.tjhughes.co.uk/fcp/product/brands-for-less/Prams-and-Strollers/Baby-Jogger-Micro-Stroller/6636

Am only posting as I bought this same model and it is so light and easy to use but paid full price with a different seller! Wish I'd seen this before buying it. Anyway- hopefully someone might get a bargain.

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm still not sleeping that well and baby has decided to take up what feels like break dancing in my belly from midnight- 4am! On that topic someone told me that if you have an active baby pre-birth in the night then once they're born they won't sleep well- does anyone know if there's any truth in that?
