Hi everyone,
Thought I would start a thread for all us mums to be who are due in May 2011 so that we can support each other. xx

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hello everyone. This is a great thread. I had so many questions and doubts this week but I have learned loads since reading your messages.
I am due 31st May. So I am still early days (4weeks and 5days).It is our first one. I already went to see the GP and like you crazydayz I was suprised that she did nothing more than fill in a form and give me some leaflets. I need to now book an appointment to see the midwife between week 8 and 11.
I am concerned because I have hypothyroidism and I was told by endocrinologist consultant that I needed a blood test done as soon as I was pregnant. That's why I went so early but the GP said this would be done by the midwife. I got myself very worried over the weekend and will be calling the midwife to confirm I don't need a blood test before that.Maybe I am being neurotic but I want to make sure it will be ok.

Teasie · 26/09/2010 22:17

blingloving and gpmama- congratulations! I've just read up on what a chemical pregnancy is- it must be very distressing :(
msme- I've had virtually no symptoms so I'm glad though a tad worried. I did feel a bit bleugh this morning but a cup of tea sorted that out. My sister had severe sickness throughout her pregnancy and had to be hospitalised six times. bluewellies- I've been racking my brain about how to disguise this at work as we have a very sociable culture. I want noone to know as it might affect my promotion prospects so I'm thinking of being the one to order drinks and come back with a sparkling water pretending it's a G&T or ask the barman to put non-alco beer in a branded glass...elderflower juice in a white wine glass might work as well. One weird thing is my tolerance of kids hasn't gone up, especially when they are being whingey/brattish on the tube or in the shops. I thought I might magically turn into a benign hen as soon as I found out I was pregnant but not yet! Grin

mummy2be76 · 26/09/2010 23:07

It's so reassuring reading all your messages! I was panicking this week as my breasts didn't feel as swollen, had stabbing pains in side, couldn't get up for a couple of minutes but then was fine. Part of me can't wait untill 12 weeks - but then I feel bad for wishing the time away. I had a lap in Aug to see why my periods were so painful and heavy. They did a dye test on my tubes and they were clear but they found a very large cyst on my left ovary. I had another hospital app to check if my cyst had grown but instead of cyst they found 6 wk baby and no cyst anymore! So I feel lucky cos I've seen the baby and the heart beat! We told our parents straight away after the early scan. I needed to tell my boss as I was going on a residential with 30 ten year olds and wouldn't be able to do all the activiites! Am no good at secrets and I felt if something went wrong I'd need the support, so most of my friends and collegues know already!BlushI feel like sleeping all the time!

jbells · 27/09/2010 10:50

hey all, hope everyone is feeling well

mummytobe- wot an unusual way to find out that your pregnant bet that was a very nice surprise :)i am also no good at keeping secrets my 2 best friends know, my mum, stepdad, dad, brother, boss (only told this one because i had to) and prob my mum has told my nan etc, to be honest tho all the people ive told i wud want to be there to support me if anything went wrong anyway, but i am really rubbish at keeping thinkgs to myself haha

newmaman- welcome to the thread, im not sure wot hypothyroidism is but i know a friend of mine has a problem with an underactive thyroid and when she was pregnant she had to go for blood tests all the time, if you are worried ring your drs see if they can give u advice, even tho the drs nowadays dont seem to do very much or give u any advice when u tell them u r pregnant :(

Blingloving- congrats, i was in a similar position to you the last time i was pg it is horrible to be stuck in a shitty work environment especially when u are pregant i used to keep a lil calender and count down the days till mat leave lol

rubbersoul · 27/09/2010 17:28

Hope everyone is ok Smile

Is anyone else feeling REALLY tired? I've been struggling to stay awake today, felt awful all day!

missemmajane · 27/09/2010 17:37

Me too rubbersoul - I didn't realise how tierd I would feel so early on - im only 6-7 weeks and had a little lay in this morning (which was lovely!) but then by 3.30pm I felt the need to have another nap - I didn't as was working, but wow.....can't wait to get home to put my feet up while watching the soaps - its so out of character for me as Im usually out all the time and enjoy a drink or two - usually the life and soul, im really hoping ill feel back to my old self sometime soon!!!

I can handle the not being able to drink at the mo and feel that its the best thing for the bubba but it would be nice to stay awake past 9pm at least a couple of nights a week!!

rubbersoul · 27/09/2010 17:43

I'm the same with going to bed early- I can feel tired from when I get in then suddenly around 9 I HAVE to sleep- it's quite sudden as well, just can't keep my eyes open any longer. I'm only 5 and abit weeks!

cowboylover · 27/09/2010 18:52

With you on the tired think but I think I might be getting better.

At 5 weeks I was in bed by 8 for 12 hours sleep and up for about 5 wee's in the night but now feeling a lot more in control of my sleeping. Still in bed before 10 which is early before me but a lot better and no need to hide in my car at lunch break for a sleep when im in the office.

trixie123 · 27/09/2010 19:17

Congrats Teasie. A slight word of caution about the drinks you mentioned - elderflower cordial and Schloer and that kind of thing and non alcoholic beer are all very high in sugar -if you are likely to be flagged up for gestational diabetes its best to avoid them. (I discovered that Jamaican ginger beer lite has no sugar and has sucralose instead of Aspartame which some people worry about)
Also, if your pregnancy affects your promotion then your bosses are behaving illegally. Best of luck and congrats again Smile

newmaman · 27/09/2010 20:26

Thank you jbells. Yes it is underactive thyroid. I have called the mw to book appointment, and asked her about it and she recomended to go for a blood test now. Feeling a bit reassured now. But you are right drs don't seem to help much.

I am actually becoming worried that I am not very tired. I know I shouldn't complain. But feeling quite nauseous I actually started feeling sick exactly on the day my period was due. How bizarre.

jbells · 28/09/2010 08:10

hey all, i am tired but not as tired as i was during the first pregnancy dont know whether its because i have a toddler to run round afta all the time, so she doesnt give me a chance to be tired i was falling asleep on the cvouch by half nine b4 i was pg so that hasnt changed, itl prob hit me like a brick in the next couple of weeks

newmman- glad u got sorted and your going for your blood test atleast the midwife can tell you wot u need to do when u go to see her now

crazydayz · 28/09/2010 08:25

With you all on the tired thing. I've been in bed by 9pm for the last 2 weeks. Unfortunately the phone rang just after I got into bed last night as I was on call but luckily didn't need to go in but I feel exhausted this morning because I didn't get to sleep until nearly 11. So rock n' roll!

BlingLoving · 28/09/2010 09:25

I seem to be okay on the tired thing now - at what turned out to be week 4-5 I was the same as Rubbersoul - I'd suddenly crash and be absolutely exhausted. But it's not too bad now.

What I'm really struggling with is the period-like pain. I've always been lucky in that I get it for short periods - maybe shortly before my period starts and then for a few hours in the first day or two. After that, I'm all good. But I have now had serious "period" pain for 5 days and it's killing me. I went to Boots to get a hot pack but the pharmacist wouldn't let me buy one as she said it would be too hot for the baby.

LifesComplicated · 28/09/2010 10:13

Hi all. Just wanted to check in here and say 'hi' Smile as I've not been on in about a week. Welcome to all the new members and congratulations!

BlingLoving - congratulations on your success after a hard time with Clomid etc. I think I remember you on on the Clomid thread (which I was also on). I'm so glad it's finally happened for you too.

Had my booking appointment with a midwife last Thursday. It wasnt 'my' MW who came though as she's off long-term sick now so I'll be receiving a hotch-potch of different care throughout my pregnancy. Great. It went ok I guess but was v hurried (they're now short-staffed) and she was more interested in asking lots of quite blunt q's about my recent mental health (I had a stress-related nervous breakdown just before I knew I was pg) and she wanted to do all sorts of risk assessments and a CAF form (which alarmed me). She's referred me to maternal mh unit which Im not thrilled with. Hey ho I guess she's only doing her job but it just left me feeling judged and I had no chance to ask qs about the actual pregnancy/birth/local groups etc.

Has anyone else had their booking appt with MW yet? If so, how did yours go?

BlingLoving · 28/09/2010 10:57

Thanks Lifes.

Sorry to hear your booking in appointment wasn't fantastic. Can you go back to the doctor to get your questions answered?

I'm trying to get an initial doctor's appointment for next week. DH and I have to register at local doctor's first though as we haven't done it since we moved.

fayc84 · 28/09/2010 11:09

I just did a three positive tests at the weekend so looks like my first is due on May 28 - the day after my birthday, what a present that would be!
Got initial doctor's appointment on Friday and not told anyone yet. I'm so excited though and just want to tell the world (or at least my mum)!

LifesComplicated · 28/09/2010 11:20

Fayc84 - Congratulations!! What a birthday present that will be. Really happy for you. Grin

ForeverBusy · 28/09/2010 11:23

Hi Everyone,

So I already have a dd who is three and I am due the 22nd of May. Have had nausea all day practically every day for two and a half weeks already, bleurk. And since the weekend the tiredness has really kicked in too. I have to say the first 12 weeks are sooo long!

I have been lucky enough to have a scan this morning as I live in france so to a gyny as is the norm here. It was a relief to see alls well as I lost the last one at 12 weeks (but then all was well on my first scan then too.)

So I have to say I cant wait for these next few weeks to fly by but how can you forget about it for a bit when you feel sick all the time??

LittleMilla · 28/09/2010 11:58

LifesComplicated Hello. I had my booking in appointment last week and was decidedly underwhelmed by the whole thing. The MW I saw was OK, but she didn't make any reference to me seeing a regular person. And sort of laughed when I asked her about it - so understaffed that you get what you're given, apparently.

I had the realisation that my DH is likely to be flipping useless when it comes to anything remotely Shock. He literally did that face as she was about to put the needle in my arm to give blood - and i was looking the other way to try not to be alarmed! Luckily (!), I am VELLY brave and so laughed it off...but he's going to be farking useless. JOY Smile.

I am now 9+4 and feeling a bit un-pg. In US with work and thought i'd be knocked sideways with jet-lag, but feeling OK ish actually. Squeezing in 8 hours per night...but had been pushing out 10+ at home. Guessing that I'm even able to sleep is a good thing, as I've struggled before. Sickness seems to be abating though - read that this has something to do with baby starting to feed from placenta or soemthing?

Dunno. Just wondered how others are feeling?

xx

LifesComplicated · 28/09/2010 12:27

Hi LittleMilla. Am quite reassured to hear I'm not the only one with an underwhelming booking-in appt and the likelihood of piecemeal care. Before becoming pg I'd heard in the media about chronic shortage of MW's so I guess this is what that was all about.
However - my MW didnt take any bloods from me (which I thought was odd at the time as all the books say she should). After reading that yours did, I think I might call my GP to query this (I think I'm anaemic anyhow as Im veggie) and would like to be reassured that someone somewhere has tested my blood.

V impressed by you being able to fend off the jet-lag and I hope all is going ok in the US for you. How much longer are you out there for? I'm glad you're able to sleep - it's so essential isnt it? (I too have probs sleeping and can get a bit 'cuckoo' after a spell of insomnia!). Good luck with the rest of your trip!

LittleMilla · 28/09/2010 17:17

I spoke too soon LifesComplicated. Had to make a midday pitstop in my room after a 'turn'. Just nailed almost a whole bag of crisps (ahem, 600 calories!) and contemplating a mini-nap.

Sod 'em. I struggle to deal with my American friends at the best of times...let alone sans booze or copious amounts of caffine. And before I offend any US MNers, that is not a sweeping comment fabout all Americans. Just the nobs I have to deal with. Grin

Humph - happy days!!

And yes, do follow up with your GP. Sounds a bit shoddy to me...!

LabMonkey · 28/09/2010 18:18

I had my booking appointment today and it went really well. My local MW is off long-term sick so not sure what's going to happen but tbh unless something major happens I'm used to bouncing between doctors so I don't mind. We had to meet in a cafe near work to fit the appointment in and she was really great about making it not obvious what was going on and hiding the paperwork when some colleagues came in. She didn't take bloods as I have to book a phlebotomy appt at the surgery to do that and she's explained all of the other appts I have to make.

Overall she was really nice and very chilled out which suited me perfectly.

funnylittlekaty · 28/09/2010 18:36

Oh my goodness think I am the moaniest person on here! Today's complaints....such a yukky cold, snot everywhere, yum. And feeling sick as a dog most of the day. Uff. Ah well on the positive side, Mum and Dad were here this weekend and did loads of stuff to help. Gardening and washing and all that. Glad to hear everyone's news about booking appt. In my maternity record book it says that they aspire to have us seen by the same person but it isn't always possible, so we'll see, I don't mind really, just can't wait for these few weeks to be put to bed so I can have the scan, see the bean and stop feeling so chuffing rough!! xxx

suedehead · 28/09/2010 18:37

hi ladies
sounds like there's a general feeling of underwhelming booking-in appointments! i have mine next thursday. looking forward to it as it's DC1 so i've really no clue what to expect when i comes to the next 7 months (apart from what you lovely MNers have shared with me!)

i'm also feeling a bit un-pg. don't really know what to expect, but i've not had any sickness, just a bit of nausea. been a bit tired on a few occasions, but i always got my 8 hours anyway, so maybe i was just doing well to start with! had a bit of thrush last week, but thankfully that's gone now. had a few weeks of not wanting to eat anything, but i think i'm going to be making up for that from now on - been so hungry today! also had a bit of hip pain the past few days, and some cramping up to 5 weeks or so.

reckon i'm 8+2 (should find that out for definite soon!) so hopefully things all baking nicely despite me feeling surprisingly fine - just need to be grateful!

newmaman · 28/09/2010 19:05

LittleMilla and LifesComplicated. I haven't had my 8 weeks appointment yet but like you I think I will have a different mw each time. From the leaflet I was given I was under the impression I would see the same every week as she has a clinic at my GP weekly. But when I booked it the person almost laughed when I asked an appointment with the mw allocated to the area.

LittleMilla I think you are right to speak to your GP to get your bloods done. I was told you should have it done by week 8.

I am having a stitch like pain on my side. That is quite new and different from the periods pain I had in the first weeks. I am worried I over did today at work as it was quite a stressfull and physical day. Anyone knows if that's normal?
