How long did it take you to conceive?

Title says it all really! I (and a fair few of my pals) am not one of those, 'Whoospy I fell on a willy and got pregnant by mistake, how embarrassing!' wimmin. When you have been waiting a few months, it does rather feel as if absolutely everyone else gets pregnant by looking at a naked picture of Tom Hardy - but I'm sure that can't be the case.

I've therefore been thinking: you know, perhaps it just does take a while - for evolutionary purposes perhaps, to prevent the planet being over-run. Perhaps it can take a year or so not because there's something wrong, but because them's the breaks.

So to inform and reassure, I'd be really interested to know how long it took you to conceive, your age when you did so, and whether there were any medical factors that you knew of (including, and speaking as a plump lass myself, weight!).

DD1 three months,(at 40,and fairly thin)DD2 twenty minutes (at 42,+ rather less thin!)

katiepotatie · 28/08/2010 00:41

After coming off the pill, 6 months with DD.
Wasn't trying with ds, he was a happy accident, dd was only 16 months when he was conceived, although we were going to have another, we would have maybe waited another year. I know how lucky we are Smile
Not planning another, god better get some birth controll sorted Grin

katiepotatie · 28/08/2010 00:44

oh i was 33, and a bit over weight, and 35 and not over weight, but am now

Catspersonalbanker · 28/08/2010 09:02

Hi Headbanger,

It took nearly 2 years, with precise timings etc, 1 M/C and a near nervous breakdown. BMI 24, fit, eating healthy , barely drinking.

please, please, please don't compare yourself to everyone else, it did drive me mad, and nearly drove me and DH apart. I was not far away from being prescribed anti depressants and that was the point I thought that there has to be more to life that this.

The thing that seemed to work was

  1. The GP finally listening when I said something couldn't be right.
  2. Reflexology- only ever had it once but 6 weeks later I got pregnant and I am a sceptic. She was qualified in maternity reflexology £30 well spent.
  3. Deciding that a baby was a nice to have not the b all and end all. Properly relaxed, had a good summer, eat what I liked, drank what I like and just put the idea to one side. Easier said than done, I know, but I found that I thought I wasn't bothered but under it all I was still stressing about it.

Am 14wks +3 days and still can't quite believe it.

Fingers crossed for you.

Muser · 28/08/2010 10:33

Ok, I am a "fell on a willy" one. Except I'm not, because after that it all went a bit wrong.

First pregnancy: 2nd cycle. Miscarriage at 5 weeks.

Second pregnancy: 1st cycle after miscarriage. Ovarian ectopic diagnosed at 6ish weeks. Treated with evil drugs.

Third pregnancy: 1st cycle back after ban. Just about to enter my 14th week.

From start to finish that was 8/9 months of TTC with 3 pregnancies. And I too know longer ask questions about baby plans. I've realised it's none of my damn business and you never know what the other person is going through.

Cosmosis · 28/08/2010 11:30

Took us a year - we got our referral to the ACU the week I got my BPF, BMI of 20ish I think, didn't make any changes to lifestyle eg alcohol, but my cycles were totally screwed up when coming off the pill (will never go back on!). Was 34 when we started, now 36, currently 6 days overdue.

wouldliketoknow · 28/08/2010 11:38

about half a year, dsis 1 year, dsil 3 years... up to 2 years is normal, longer than that start looking at medical help, important think don't dispear, just let it happen...

pigsinmud · 28/08/2010 11:41

We have been very fortunate and have conceived 5 times and each time within the first cycle of trying. I had one m/c.

BMI 20.5

1st pregnancy was I was 25 and last I was 33.

Ariesgirl · 28/08/2010 11:46

Mary, Headbanger said she saw someone.

I've been reading this thread with much interest - thanks for starting it Head. It really does seem as though women either seem to fall on a willy/one month TTC, or it takes them a much longer while. There are some lovely anecdotes here; sorry I can't remember the name but I love the one where the poster says she was sitting in her garden and thinking of all her blessings, as it were. I think on MN, especially on the threads we frequent, it can help us feel that there are lots of potential problems out there and we are bound to have one/some of them. I'm only on seven months and it seems like forever, but it's really not.

Hope it's not too long now, Cosmosis. Must be very boring for you.

Cosmosis · 28/08/2010 11:48

It's not so bad aries, at least I am the centre of attention amongst friends and family Grin

MrsFC · 28/08/2010 18:51

Hi Ariesgirl, that was me talking about sitting in the garden, I'm glad you liked it. I have a secret crush on you, and Muser too... I'm Head's lurker PESH friend... In fact I am completely in love with all the BESHes...

Cher87 · 28/08/2010 19:03

I'm 23, it took me 10 months to fall pregnant. 2 of my friends were lucky enough to fall the first month of trying!

I got engaged at christmas and we decided to wait until we were married and do it 'properly' and I fell the week between christmas and new year.

My advise would be not to get too stressed about it although it know its easier said than done!

sheeplikessleep · 28/08/2010 19:03

DS1 - 2nd month of trying (but I knew 1st month we were too late really).
DS2 - 1st month of trying.

I count my blessings every day.

Headbanger · 28/08/2010 19:09

Thanks so much to you all for taking the trouble to reply to this - it really has set our minds at rest, and there are some great stories!

MrsFC thanks for telling us your tale luvva: it made me feel all warm and nice.

Aries, let me introduce my PESHfriend, who I sometimes mention as lurking in the Palais! (she's the one what gave me the CBFM...)

I think you are all great...

saltyair · 28/08/2010 20:32

Hi MrsFC have heard the beautiful HB refer to yoou, and lovely to hear your conception story too!

DiscoDaisy · 28/08/2010 20:40

DD1 on the pill
2nd pregnancy m/c on the pill
DD2 2 months to conceive
DD3 on the pill
DS1 had sex once without using contraception
DS2 condom split, took morning after pill within 24 hrs

MissMarjoribanks · 28/08/2010 21:02

I was convinced we'd be infertile. I told myself that if I wasn't pregnant in a year, I'd apply for barrister training.

Fell first cycle, had sex twice. Blush I might do the barrister training eventually.

My aunt struggled with infertility so I know precisely how lucky I am.

PYT · 28/08/2010 21:05

No.1 - a month
No.2 (miscarried, sadly) - 4 mths
No.3 - 3 mths

I know we are very lucky. I have several friends going through IVF at the moment and it is gruelling.

MrsFC · 28/08/2010 21:06

Oh Salty, you have been in my thoughts, you've had a rotten time lately. I am in total awe of your stoicism. I know it's your 2WOOFL now, I love a good symptom spot (ask Head, Im a nightmare...) Really hoping it's your turn this month x

lollymad · 28/08/2010 21:24

DD - 1st time after stopping pill
DS - 2-3 months

Know we are incredibly lucky, as I have friends who've been trying for years, and really been through the mill with it all.

Ariesgirl · 28/08/2010 21:28

A secret crush! BlushBlush

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 28/08/2010 21:34

1st pregnancy- First time. Only had unprotected sex once as we weren't trying so he was a happy 'oops'.

2nd pregnancy- 6 months which ended in a miscarriage.

3rd pregnancy- 2 months.

MrsFC · 28/08/2010 21:55

Aries, glad you're grateful and not reporting me for definite stalker tendencies.... I'm definitely more than a bit obsessed with you all...!

Muser · 28/08/2010 21:59

The mythical MrsFC, lovely to finally see you out in the open. Although am mightly embarrassed by the whole crush thing. I have major crushes on all the other BESHes, they are a brilliant lot.
