How long did it take you to conceive?

Title says it all really! I (and a fair few of my pals) am not one of those, 'Whoospy I fell on a willy and got pregnant by mistake, how embarrassing!' wimmin. When you have been waiting a few months, it does rather feel as if absolutely everyone else gets pregnant by looking at a naked picture of Tom Hardy - but I'm sure that can't be the case.

I've therefore been thinking: you know, perhaps it just does take a while - for evolutionary purposes perhaps, to prevent the planet being over-run. Perhaps it can take a year or so not because there's something wrong, but because them's the breaks.

So to inform and reassure, I'd be really interested to know how long it took you to conceive, your age when you did so, and whether there were any medical factors that you knew of (including, and speaking as a plump lass myself, weight!).

1st pregnancy I was 13st 7, concieved within 6 months and immediately after I gave up smoking. I was 31. Easy peasy pregnancy, tricky birth.

2nd pregnancy I fell again after 6 months & lost it after 5.5 weeks & fell again 2 months later to lose it at 4.4 weeks. I changed my lifestyle, gave up drinking & started reflexology, but it took another 8 months before I fell again. I was 13st 7 again, but 39 this time. And the pregnancy has still been relatively easy but more morning sickness & exhaustion. I put that down to my age, despite being relatively fit.

I am of the very stong opinion that some people have their optimum time of year to conceive, and I am a summmer person. I also think it is a lot to do with your state of mind. I was completely obsessed with having another child. It overtook every waking thought. People kept telling me to relax, which just made me even more tense and angry. BUt one day I sat in my garden and thought 'you know what MrsFC, you have wasted over a year of your life on this now, and you are not getting any younger. How about you look at all the great things you DO have'. Which I did. And then I imagined the very worst things that could happen to me. And you know what? Having another child came about 5th on that list. So I decided to stop worrying so much and be grateful for waht I DO have.

Got a BFP the very next month.

I love stories like that Mrs FC

Makes me feel like the cosmos is working in some weird and wonderful way and everything is meant to be...(or some such bollocks!) Smile

I'm another one who has carelessly managed to fall on a willy, twice.

ginger2000 · 27/08/2010 17:56

DD - 3 months - a bit amazed that it happened so fast and when we weren't trying terribly hard, certainly hadn't made any life changes like no booze etc - was 29.

Am 34 weeks with second but has taken well over 2 years to conceive (nearer 3 now that I think about it) - got BFP 2 weeks before referral to clinic. A bit like Mrs F, we sort of tried to put it in perspective - much easier for us as we already had a child than those who struggle to conceive at all. We relocated, good new job, told DD how lucky we all were and then I got pg. Maybe there is something in the time of the year thing too as DD's bday is Dec and I am due in Oct this time?

Good luck with TTC!

youngblowfish · 27/08/2010 17:57

1st pregnancy, 26 yo, 9st 11, BMI 19.8 - it only took us a month, but we were on our honeymoon, so plenty of happy SWI :). Almost 7 weeks now and hoping that everything will be as straightforward as falling pregnant was for us [wishful thinking emoticon].

I was not expecting to be this fortunate. It took my parents 2 years to conceive me and they were both in their early twenties.

ginger2000 · 27/08/2010 17:58

sorry, MrsFC not Mrs F

ThatDamnDog · 27/08/2010 18:00

Afraid I fell on a willy, twice. With an embarrassingly high BMI both times, probably between 30 and 35. But I was 25 and 28 respectively.

Despite both being "accidental" pregnancies I realise how very lucky I am, especially when you read some of the stories of women TTC on here.

NB When I say "fell on a willy", I feel it is important to point out that it was DP's willy, both times, and not just that I wasn't looking where I was going and stumbled on some random pervert hanging round at a bus stop ...

OliPocket · 27/08/2010 18:05

I used the Persona fertility monitor and it worked both times - I was pregnant after the first month of trying (both times). I then gave it to a friend who fell the second month of trying.

I was 36 the first time and 37 now with this baby (am 24 weeks). Both times my BMI was 22ish.

I had been told I had polycystic ovaries so used the monitor to try and work out if I was ovulating. It proved very accurate for me!

TheUnmentioned · 27/08/2010 18:12

BMI- hugely high :( (own fault etc etc)

DS- about 6/7 months I think (age 24)

This time (almost 38 weeks) - about 7/8 months I think (age 28)

Irregular periods though so I suppose by months I realy mean cycles.

DetectivePotato · 27/08/2010 19:13

3 years with DS. I was 26 and 9 and a half stone. Had endometriosis and DH had various sperm problems. The samples never came back quite right.

2nd time, 28 and 9 and a half stone, (I am 16 weeks pregnant now) stopped taking the pill 9 months before we actually planned to, thinking (and going on advice from doctor) that it would take ages. We had unprotected sex once and I got pregnant! Smile

LittleSilver · 27/08/2010 19:23

DC1 (22) 1 month. MMC at 12/40
DD1 (23) 1 month
DD2 (25) 1 month
DD3 (26) 1 month
DC4 (28) 1 month. MC at 5/40
DC5 (29) 3 months Currently 15/40, praise the Lord.

I have been very very lucky, I do appreciate that.

BabyValentine · 27/08/2010 21:48

DD (29) one month. Healthy BMI.

DC2 (33) 6 months (but didn't ovulate for 2 of those months). Healthy BMI (although about 1/2 stone heavier than with 1st pregnancy).

prettybird · 27/08/2010 21:57

39 (when ds was born): 7 months (9 cycles - I had a 22 days cycle). Had just had a blood test done when I conceived. Wasn't overweight.

Had a missed miscarriage 3 years later and then another missed miscarriage of twins (having taken Clomid) tow years after that :(:(

Have finally at 49 given up hope :(

sam26oscar · 27/08/2010 22:03

DS1 12 months, 34yrs old, 9st 7lbs, DH was in the forces and away on exercise a lot so a few missed oppotunities, used persona monitor too and fell 3rd month of using it.

tried for 18 months this time but am 40 now, still 9st 7 lbs and again DH in forces but decided not to go with any fertility help as i was approaching 40 and wanted nature to decide, Had one healthy child and was of the mind if it happens it happens if it doesn't i am blessed to have one child already, am currently 13/40.

MissCKitty · 27/08/2010 22:04

With previous partner, tried for nearly 2 yrs and was told cos we both had fertility problems the chances of us having a baby together would be vv small. Unfortunately he and I seperated about 12 months ago. I met someone new soon after and despite my PCOS we conceived after about 3 months.

chocolatefroggie · 27/08/2010 22:26

I am another careless person Grin
just once I was 23 BMI 21
dh was v. pleased with himself I wasn't at the time!

thinking of trying for a planned pregnancy soon, bit worried I might get a bit of a shock at how long it really takes!

flowerfairy · 27/08/2010 23:29

3 months for DS who is now 6yrs was 30 at time of conception.
Am now 14 wks with no2 after 3 years of trying. Had said we would give up by June if no joy. Then LMP was May and had a huge shock that i could actually get pg again.
Am now 37. am roughly 9st 7 ish.

Very similar story to sam26 above used ovulation sticks for first pg and let nature decide (eventually) this time.

NonnoMum · 27/08/2010 23:43

I'm a bit Kerry Katona when it comes to conceiving.

DC1 - honeymoon baby - so first month of trying.
DC2 - when we tried again 3 years later
DC3 - in my sleep I think when DC2 was a few months old - actually - we were BOTH asleep

but I wouldn't volunteer this information as I do appreciate that fertility is very personal, but the thread did ask for different experiences...

FWIW, I've never been on the pill, but more of a barrier-method girl (apart from DC3 of course). Don't know if that has any anecdotal evidence of not effecting fertility (IYSWIM)

solo · 27/08/2010 23:59

Age 31, 10st 5lbs and 12 years :( ended in MMC and a further two years and conceived Ds...my marriage had ended and I got caught out with a new relationship. I was told I wouldn't conceive naturally and was about to start IVF when my marriage ended. I've gone on to have a Dd too at age (almost)43 and was about 12st 7lbs.

DinahRod · 28/08/2010 00:01

How do you all know your BMIs so readily? It just isn't the sort of info I retain. Am a healthy weight for my height.

1st at 31, first cycle after coming off the pill
2nd at 33, first cycle
3rd at 37, first cycle

Know we are very fortunate & was shocked to get pg so quickly, my mother had trouble getting and staying pg, so anticipated something similar. Medical factors? I do know when I ovulate as I get ovulation pain and also sex drive rockets at the right time.

FrameyMcFrame · 28/08/2010 00:03

1st, fell pregnant by accident. (Dd)
2nd, fell pregnant with IUD in (ended in miscarriage)
3rd, 1 month of trying
