Hello!

I found out last week I was pregnant, and although I've not been to my GP yet, various websites and Miriam Stoppard have told me I'm due on March 31st/April 1st! (poor little april fools baby - let's hope it's late...).

I know it's early days, but wanted to start this thread as I've already got lots of questions - like, is anyone else having quite bad pains? I've been getting bad period-type pains, which have been worrying me, but I understand people do get (this is my first pregnancy by the way!).

Right, that's it - hope I get some company soon..!

Oh Mrs D poor you! How do you know which OTC pain killers are safe to take for these pains? How long will they let you go on like this? Sounds horrid............

M2T · 26/03/2004 09:38

MrsDL! How frustrating and annoying for you...... but exciting at the same time. The bath should help with the pain and help you relax too. Sounds like a great idea.
If you don't mind I'd quite like you to have gone into established labour by 2pm today when I finish for the weekend. Thanks.

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 09:44

Well it's early labour, I'm told. Could go on for ages but then might take off quite soon - we don't know. As for painkillers - co-dydramol isn't OTC but your pretty safe taking anything paracetamol based or ibuprofen. Not much risk to baby at this stage. Please don't think it's as horrid as I make out - I could be just a whingy moo!!

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 09:57

M2T - I am going to put myself in the bath now. I will close my eyes and think hard, maybe burn my lavender candle too. See, I am working on it. Ouch - gotta go....

Lesley76 · 26/03/2004 09:57

I'm sure you are NOT a whingy moo! Just hanging around feeling awful doesn't sound like much fun to me.

i thought you couldn't take ibuprofen when preg? Or is that just in the early stages?

I had dental probs in early preg and was condemned to paracetemol only and was surprised to find how ineffective it is compared to my usual standby of ibuprofen. You can take both together can't you? Oh I know i sound like a junkie.....

Have you had your nice relaxing bath yet? Is someone at home with you in case you feel worse and need hauled out???!!

Fennel · 26/03/2004 10:37

hi

still here and no exciting developments. still getting regular but very mild contractions. not strong enough to get my hopes up, but enough to make me very grumpy with everyone - I really hope it either gets going or calms down.

but I do have a sparkling clean bedroom now and lots of freshly washed towels and bedding!

Mrs D you sound as though it's really getting going, good luck.

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 11:25

Hello Fennel. I am out of the bath and feeling loads better. I shall be gutted if the birthing pool is not free when I go in. My dh is getting it pretty roughly too - he 'can't understand my tantrums'!! I am just sitting and waiting...waiting.....

Fennel · 26/03/2004 11:43

Hi Mrs D. hope you get the birthing pool. I am just off to aquanatal exercise class now perhaps that will speed things up! I think the contractions are slowing down though.

My DP had the nerve to have a bit of a headache this morning. I was so not impressed! And dd1 refused to get dressed for school, I just screamed at her, don't think she's ever seen me so angry.

handlemecarefully · 26/03/2004 12:07

Fennel and Mrs Dolittle,

As I probably won't get much chance to log on again today, all the very best with your developing labours! Looking forward to hearing some happy baby news soon.

Lesley76 - sorry to hear you have been poorly. No the fact that you haven't felt stomach cramps, braxton hicks etc does not mean you will necessarily be overdue...(although as you know, most babies are a little overdue)

Lucyjones, you don't want to know what the 36 items on my to do list are - they are mostly mundane chores that I have fallen behind with. But I will feel mega organised and a whole lot better when I have done them!

Lesley76 · 26/03/2004 12:27

Oh dear poor Mr Fennel had a headache! The wee lamb! Its so hard being a man............

Lesley76 · 26/03/2004 12:29

And poor Mr Doolitle has a tantruming wife he can't understand. My heart is breaking...............

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 12:35

Well I am off to walk the dog again, see if we can spur things on.
By the way, it is unreasonable for dh to have made arrangements to go out to watch the rugby and consume large amounts of alcohol on Saturday. We have a (very good) friend on standby. My family are horrified but I don't want to push him into anything. After all, it's him that misses out.

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 12:59

Oh and I couldn't sit on the chair at the computer anymore so I am sitting on my fitball - Magic!!

udar · 26/03/2004 13:07

MrsD I hope you get the pool, I'm really worried about the same thing. I think it is completely unreasonable to go out and consume large amounts of alcohol on Sat. Going to watch the rugby I can understand but he could at least be on call for the inevitable without being intoxicated. Surely a baby is a bit more important than the rugby??? Although who would you rather have as a birth partner your friend or dh?
Sorry to hear you haven't been well Lesley76, no sore boobs for me either or any cramps for over a day now so maybe it was all a false start. Off for some accupuncture Monday in hope that it can help speed things up a little.
I'm getting worse pains in my left groin which are really wierd, thought they might be spd symptoms but they sometimes kick in when I'm not even doing anything or have any weight on that side at all. The wierd and wonderful things that we have to go through.

M2T · 26/03/2004 13:11

Are you serious MrsDL?? Is he going to the rugby tomorrow?
He won't get a chance to coz you'll be on the labour suite tonight.

What's a fitball? Is it one of those huge rubber balls you lie on to do sit-ups?

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 13:20

OH YES, I am serious. He is going to watch the rugby tomorrow in town with one of his bachelor buddies. I would awful if I asked him not to go and nothing happened.
The fitball, otherwise called swiss ball, gym ball, exercise ball or birthing ball even. Great for your pelvic floor and if you have stitches afterwards, apparently. My friend used one to rock her baby to sleep. It's helping my back at the moment by pushing my pelvis forwards. I just got it this week.

Lesley76 · 26/03/2004 13:27

Thank you Udar. Sorry to hear about your false alarm. MW told me that you can get strange pains in your groin when the baby's head engages. Could that be it?

Mrs D - I agree with Udar - your Dh should stay sober so he can be there if needed. At least he will still get to the game, which is more than you will. And YOU don't have the option of going out and getting p*ed, do you? Will you have someone other than the dog with you tomorrow? (though I'm sure he's a very nice dog and probably better company that some humans..........)

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 14:35

Actually Lesley76, now you have brought it to my attention, I was thinking all the time I'd be okay tomorrow because it was the weekend so I wouldn't be left alone. But now that I have put two and two together, I will be on my own cos he's going to watch rugby. So you are right just me and the dog. I'd rather that than have him miserable at home, though! And I am very grumpy, the constant twinges aren't half annoying.

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 14:39

Udar - I developed awful SPD when baby's head engaged 3 weeks ago before I left work. However, a friend told me at the time it gets better and TBH I have looked after myself since I left work and not sat down or stood for long periods and it isn't nearly as bad as it was. Bloody contractions now , theres a thing.......

udar · 26/03/2004 16:25

It is only really randomly and only on the left. There doesn't seem to be any pattern at all as to when it comes and goes, really bizarre. Maybe the head is engaging more since yesterday morning.
Off for my walk now, then going to do spinning at the gym, have to get out of the house. Maybe all this exertion will bring on bub.
MrsD hopefully it'll all happen tonight and then you and dh can both watch the rugby at home tomorrow.

Lesley76 · 26/03/2004 16:33

Oops sorry Mrs D - how are you feeling now? If I were you I would invite a friend over tomorrow ( preferably one who can drive you to hospital if necessary) and have a nice relaxing day (if thats possible the way you are feeling). Eat chocolate (or curry or pineapple), watch a funny DVD /video, chill out, whatever.........

Don't tell DH/P so he feels very guilty for neglecting you! I honestly dont think you should be all alone at this time........

Lesley76 · 26/03/2004 16:35

Udar - I am seriously impressed by all this exercise!!! Still spinning at 38 weeks??? Just tell me you've stopped the high impact aerobics???

udar · 26/03/2004 16:41

I don't do high impact anything. I'm actually at 39 + 2 now, but the nice thing about spinning is that it easy to adjust to your own level as you go. It is also a good excuse to get out of the house and have some company, have met quite a few people at the gym and it will be good to see them again, might not see them for a while (all going well this weekend).
Well am off, will check in when I get back.

Fennel · 26/03/2004 16:49

Hope it goes well for you over the weekend Mrs D. my contractions have stopped, now I just have general backache and bad temper.

Would still like to know what HMCs 36 "things to do" are.

MrsDoolittle · 26/03/2004 17:07

Thank you girls for all your kind messages. Hopefully it will all kick off soon, although sounds like Udar and Fennel are pretty close to the edge now. I have had a really lazy day today and after all the panic yesterday I am actually feeling better this afternoon than yesterday. I can't imagine what it's like for the ladies who have children at home too when they feel like this - I am murderous! Atleast the dog stays put when I am like this. I just keep shuffling around!!! I have to say I can't imagine spinning now!
