Welcome weary travellers. It's been a long road, but you made it! Now, hard as it might be, leave your ESH spawn at the creche and step into the spa - where we have every treatment available to soothe your Amityville Horror undercarriage, ravaged raspberries and worn out wits. And - wait for it - we've got the bar back. And it's all-inclusive

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a glass, lower yourself into the jacuzzi and lets get chatting. We are Forever ESH!

Happy T-day box!

Quiet here due to back in hopsital yesterday thx to HV worrying about his ongoing mild jaundice Cue traumatised mamma when they stuck a needle in his hand, folded his hand over and squeezed it rhythmically for about 10 minutes while they drained all his blood out of him :( Anyway, results were fine. He still has a little but nothing to worry about.

Same HV visit led me to go to GP re reflux as well. We're trialling Gaviscon to see if it helps. He's certainly been less sicky and was possibly more settled last night so fingers crossed.

I am starting to feel like I'm some kind of munchausen by proxy mother :(

Anyway, we're working through stuff. It's been a bit of a shock having a more high-maintenance baby than expected, but on the positive side, he's adorable and gorgeous so that makes up for the fact that he will never allow himself to be put down!

He's spending a lot of time in our bed but partly I think the problem with the carrycot now is that he's grown out of it! Length-ways he's still got room but it's a sort of hour-glass shape (slightly) so he's a bit enclosed at the sides. I'm trying to work out how we can fit the cot into our room.

ski I'm so sorry, I know you asked me nappy questions and I didn't get to answering you. The liners are used to make it easier to get rid of poo, and to help keep the wee away from skin (like a one-way barrier). Now for a fully BF baby there's no point in trying to capture the poo. I don't use a paper liner at all myself, I just put the whole nappy in the wash. I tend to use fleece liners actually which are really soft, work better as a wee-liner, and are fully washable with the nappies.

Babies who are on some or all formula may have more formed poos so the paper liner will have some use. When Comma starts weening I'll probably switch to paper.

You don't need a liner at all with the bamboo nappies if you don't want to use one.

Don't ever fold them. They should always be single sheet. It can line the whole nappy from front to back. If it's too long you can rip it (just roughly) to shorten it but it doesn't matter - just make sure there's no liner sticking out of the wrap as it will make the nappy leak by wicking.

Was there anything else you wanted to know? I'm really pleased you're getting to grips with them. I love the Bambinex nappies. I prefer Mother-ease wraps I have found (I've not been able to trial Bambinex on a newborn before as we only took them on when LC was about 2 years old) but our Bambinex ones are ok as long as the nappy isn't soaked. The binding on Mother-ease is better.

cos I would put all non-organic stuff through on a rinse cycle at least. I use soap nuts on Comma and LC's clothes as they're really gentle and don't leave any scent or anything on the clothes which can irritate LC's eczema. You can just out clothes through a rinse cycle instead of a full cycle with soap nuts if you want. www.inasoapnutshell.co.uk

ski and cassie great news on the smiles! We're not there yet although there have been some starts to some. I remember when LC first started to laugh. It was like liquid gold .

My "little boy" is now over 11Lbs and is rapidly growing out of everything Shock. Saw a fellow NCT-er yesterday in town and her baby, a week older than Comma, is still only about 8 1/2 Lbs, and teeny tiny!

Right, it's nearly midday and I'm not dressed Blush

SkiHorseWonAWean · 15/08/2010 11:47

carrots 11lbs? Shock Grin Why to not fold paper in nappy? But if I do just a single sheet then it's about 6" wide and gusset is only 3" wide. Confused. I am very sorry to hear you're having a more difficult time than expected with comma, but I hope he's well on the mend very soon.

organiccarrotcake · 15/08/2010 11:59

fanny I use a Rockin Baby sling for Comma when I'm carrying for a short time (less than 1/2 hour). V quick to pop in and out and I can BF in it.

www.rockinbabysling.com/products/index/pouches/page:2

Also have a MAM stretchy wrap. More faffy to put on (takes 1-2 minutes) but can "wear" C for hours, but not BF.

www.mamdesign.net/carrying/slings/mamwrap.html

Also I have a mai tei which I carried LC in until he was over 2, but it's not quite supprotive of Comma just yet.

Anyone around Windsor on the 11th Sept?

CUNextTuesday · 15/08/2010 14:20

Gah, I could have been but will be in Devon for the w/end Sad

organiccarrotcake · 15/08/2010 14:26

Pooh to that cunty. Windsor is the place to be.

We're off camping next week in Filey, which is close to Whitby, Pickering and Scarborough. Camp site has a swimming pool (seems like it's a kid-friendly one with stuff for children to do - you know, the place you'd run a mile from BC).

Tried to find B&Bs but for 2 rooms it's nigh on £700 for a week just for the B&B! Shock

So camping it is. Wish me luck :) At least we can take the cloth nappies as we'll go in the landie (space in the vehicle for the nappies & bucket) and there's a laundrette there.

CUNextTuesday · 15/08/2010 14:50

I used to live in Slough and look wistfully across the sewage works and M4 towards Windsor...

Backinthebox · 15/08/2010 15:17

Rots North Yorkshire coast is lovely! Used to spend a lot of time there when we were little. Have fun!

Fanny I started off with DD with a Ring Sling, but could not get the hang of it at all. It kept slipping and didn't feel secure, and then kept bouncing on my CS scar. Then I tried a Moby wrap, which was OK but she was going through her 'I have COLIC and am going to scream in your face at everything' phase, so I didn't use it much mainly to avoid having a screaming child quite so in my face. When she was about 10 weeks we progressed to a Babyhawk mei tai. She didn't like it until she was big enough to sit with her legs out, then it was very useful up until about 6 months ago. OH likes to use the frame carrier we have (a Little Life one) and she used that from about 5 months old. He used to scare me with his relaxed tying of the Babyhawk - was clearly never a boy scout with those knots!

I've got a fleecey pouch and a stretchy pouch this time, just to see. I suspect my trusty Babyhawk will end up being the carrier of choice though.

Rots I will be near Windsor that week - most likely in a hospital nearby, laying a baybee! I will tell Clucky though.

Polly - Clucky had 18 months of people (including the HV) sucking their breathe in and tutting at the dainty size of her DD. It doesn't stop just because they are not in the bump any more!

SilverSky · 15/08/2010 21:08

rubytuesday my mate's work mate lives in "West Windsor* aka Slough!!!

I am rots I am around that day and if you wanted to meet up let me know. Will have to wear something to make myself identifiable! I know I'll carry a bottle of gin!

organiccarrotcake · 15/08/2010 21:34

Thanks box. silver that would be brilliant. When we get back from hols we'll plan September and decide whether we're going. Also depends on how well we get on camping this week as we would camp there on the horsebox park. Anyone else?

SkiHorseWonAWean · 16/08/2010 08:02

I've got rellies in Windsor. I once got caught shoplifting in Windsor. Blush

Instincts a baby is born with include:
i) latching on
ii) mummy has just opened her book
iii) mummy feels up for sex
iv) mummy just needs 5 minutes P&Q
v) mummy needs a poo

Operation "winter wardrobe" has failed and it's not even 9am. He was screaming his head off and we're out of milk so I reached for the stroopwafels. :( Why can't I be one of those people who puts down the biscuit packet when they're stress?

Please to go to a horse show with the FESHes? Envy

CUNextTuesday · 16/08/2010 08:36

vi) mummy's just picked up a fork/spoon/coffee cup Angry

SkiHorseWonAWean · 16/08/2010 08:47

vii) mummy's just sat down to watch the TV programme she's been looking forward to watching all week
viii) mummy's just sat down after washing the bottles/chucking your milky bib in the washing machine from the last feed

CurlyCasperBaggedABairn · 16/08/2010 08:51

(vii) Glass of wine...

I have been thwarted several times in recent days. However, we did manage three pub meals with little fuss. Lunch on Thurs - she was awake throughout, took her bottle while we waited for food, and only shed a few tears when I was changing her. Dinner on Friday - again fed while we waited for food, but otherwise quiet. Well, except for the full volume grunting and straining and finally pooing. Twice while we were there Grin Dinner on Saturday - fell asleep in car on way there, woke up in car on way home. Slept in her car seat, on floor beside my chair, for the duration, in a very noisy room, full of clanking and muchos hilarity from the large group next to us. That's my girl!

Despite Friday's poos, she again seems bunged up. But it's ok, because when I bicycle her legs, she gives me the biggest smiles. Mind you, she's lying next to me gurgling and smiling at nothing in particular at the mo. I love it.

rots I will be heading norf in Sept. Probably in Leeds area just as you are in Windsor! Still trying to work out where all we want to visit/how feasible it all is. Enjoy any potential meet-ups.

ski have the visitors done some babysitting now?

Am gutted. decided to find out about the Odeon cinema Newbies screenings. None at our nearest cinema, but we could travel a bit. But the films being shown are rubbish (Step Up 3 ???!!!!). I want to watch Inception with my baby screaming in my ear Smile.

I sympathise ski I need to start getting some sort of shape back because I'm still in maternity wear as nothing else fits. But my kitchen currently holds such gems as apple pie, doughnuts, Thorntons chocolates, carrot cake, ice cream and lots of cheeses. Nom Nom!

CUNextTuesday · 16/08/2010 09:42

ambitious! Grin

FannyPriceless · 16/08/2010 12:49

(ix) mummy is starving and really needs to make herself a healthy lunch rather than eat a Snickers bar while feeding

That last one because the corn cobs in my fridge have now expired as I keep being thwarted in my attempts to have a lunch which does not include bread, fat or chocolate.Angry

SkiHorseWonAWean · 16/08/2010 12:55

Or gin? Wink

I've just had a salad complete with marinated chicken, fresh avocado, pinenuts etc., etc. As I sat down there was a "waaah, waaaah". Hmm

CurlyCasperBaggedABairn · 16/08/2010 13:51

until a moment ago i had one hand on a bottle and the other on a cheese and chorizo wholegrain baguette. my lunch is finished, hence free hand for typing. Baby is in her bouncer by the way, hence no need to have a hand on her (one advantage to FF over BF - you don't actually have to have the baby against your body Smile)

she's ravenous after her every-second-day poonami. i'm sure FF babies are meant to poo at least once a day...

CurlyCasperBaggedABairn · 16/08/2010 13:56

after typing that i dished up the apple pie. cue mmwwwwwwwwwaaaaahhhhhhhh, cuddle me mummy!

Saw Inception on Sat curly tis very weird.

FannyPriceless · 16/08/2010 16:05

I am now officially on the path to freedom! Yes, I have just successfully expressed BM!Smile
In my mind this means the steps from here are:

  1. Get into an expressing routine.
  2. Get Clyde to accept a bottle.
  3. Hand Clyde and a bottle to MrP to get myself some free time away from breasts being demanded.
  4. Introduce formula/mixed feeds when the time is right.

I'm so determined to get it right this time. With Bonnie it was hell trying to stop BF. She refused to take a bottle as I think we left it too late to introduce it. Plus I was a bit precious about the BF only thang which hampered our ability to move on. I want Clyde to get used to bottles now to avoid those problems later. And to put myself back in control to exorcise the demons of last time!

I'm so thrilled at how it went too - 90 mls in 5 mins!!Grin I put the pump on one side while Clyde was feeding on the other. Result!

CUNextTuesday · 16/08/2010 16:11

Bravo fanfare!!

rollerbaby · 16/08/2010 16:33

Woo hoo fanny! That sounds like a plan. And one I definitely would like to implement all being well. Have you got a super dooper electric expresser?

okie and ski what did you think of inception? I got a bit cross at the end. I like a nice happy ending. Good though.

Some questions:

Are figs good for constiptation?

Also how much paid pat leave did your partners get?
