Phew Dog! Thank goodness for that, you had us all really worried. Glad everything is ok.
And yes, I agree, bedtimes are a nightmare at the best of times, without being 31 weeks pregnant. You are most definitely well within your rights to feel the way you do.
Learning Support Review Meeting went well - I think. Again, reserving judgement, but they were much more switched on and covered the transition to next year and handover to the next teacher, so all sounds good. It helped that the SENCO supervised ds1 and a few other children while the others went off to do a string instrument concert (ds didn't want to go). She did some assessments with him while she had him his is off the scale for his reading ability and currently working at 11 years old for spelling! She was also able to observe his social interaction and they played a social skills board game. The brothers that bully him a lot were there as well and she found it useful to observe their interaction with him and his with them. Main points were:
-
They are very keen to encourage his confidence and improve his self-esteem, as well as significantly improve his view of school, so have made provision for him to use a dictaphone to plan and organise some of his work and he is also going to be allowed to use mind-mapping an pictoral plans rather than writing outlines of what he wants to write (big issues with him hating handwriting, probably relating to fine motor dyspraxia).
-
I am also allowed to write down his workings out for numeracy homework for him, as he often has a big meltdown because he just wants to stick down the answer but not explain how he's done it.
-
They also said that he will be allowed to complete homework on the computer where the content is more important than the handwriting practise. That will make him REALLY happy.
All of the above will make my life a lot easier and him a LOT happier.
-
Confirmed that a home-school contact book will be put into action in the next few days.
-
Teacher has already started having end-of day debriefs with him to air his worries and/or talk about any positive aspects of the day.
-
He still has the same targets for handwriting and spacing, but with the understanding that these are unlikely to improve massively, although he has improved slightly.
-
They are going to make a big deal of him becoming a free reader to help him understand that he is bright/intelligent and doing really well at school.
-
He will continue to have access to a designated adult at lunch-times and to be able to either sit in the classroom with his teacher or on the chairs in reception and read if he feels he can't cope in the playground.
So, all good stuff. Some of it to be implemented in the remainder of this term, some for the new teacher to implement next year (she is meeting with the SENCO and his current teacher to be briefed on his needs).
Phew - hopefully last meeting with the school this school year - yay!
Weighed myself yesterday and I haven't lost any more, but haven't gained since I hurt my ankle, which is not bad for someone who's basically sat on her backside for the best part of the week. So am satisfied with that. Haven't had anything naughty to eat for just over a week and a half and the cravings for chocolate have finally left me. Only sugar I've had was in a glass of chilled Purdeys, but that doesn't count because its choc full of vitamins and minerals so is good for you.
