it's THE traditional Portuguese dish. 1001 ways to cook it. but it's not fresh, it's dry and salted

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 20:09

Ahhhh - that makes a lot of sense - trad Portuguese Trad Scottish.... smart title!

Second Portuguese question (and probably last) how do you pronounce João?

evitas · 01/07/2010 20:12

hum... good question. It's almost impossible for you (British) but it would be something like Jo and the "ão" is like the sound of a race car passing by ... aaaaaooooooooooooooo
(just use your imagination)

any news from your niece?

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 20:15

Nope on DSIL

Grrrrrrr.

And I have a degree in linguistics with a major in phonetics (pronouncing stuff right) so I LOVE to be able to know how to properly say stuff in furrin. Jo-wow-ooh?

evitas · 01/07/2010 20:19

yes, that's close
but check this
you'll hear the correct pronunciation

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 20:19

OOooooOooh I've thought of another Portuguese q. If you'll indulge me.

Have you ever seen Love Actually? I assume from my limited Spanish that the subtitles for Colin Firth are fairly accurate (in as much as I can make out some portuguese words which sound a bit like the Spanish for what's written underneath) but how badly does he mangle the language? Is it unrecognisable? Is it a few grammar mistakes?

And a q for just you really. You have the oldest DC here I have ( I think) the youngest at 3 months TODAY!! There must be nearly 2 months between them. Weird. What went through you head when you realised you were in labour so much earlier than planned?

evitas · 01/07/2010 20:25

I'm watching the scene on youtube

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 20:25

COOL Joao song. So kind of a zhoo-wow.

Sucks for joao that he's sad about losing his balloon though.

evitas · 01/07/2010 20:30

sniff sniff

his portuguese is good!
the actress is a singer who became famous because she won the portuguese eurovision song contest in 1996

Yes, amazing. DS will be 5 months next week, he's 20 weeks now

evitas · 01/07/2010 20:33

labour... I was very sad but very excited at the same time. I didn't want him to come so early, but I didn't have the easiest pregnancy. But I was in chock when the doctor said: "you're 2cm dilated an I can feel the baby's head!" I just wanted to cry

evitas · 01/07/2010 20:46

Arcadie I'm sorry, but I need to go. DH is looking at me saying "dinner is ready". I'll try to come back latter.
It was really nice to "speak" with you
xxx

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 20:46

OK. I have wine in hand now and may get silly. Evitas you're very good natured answering all my nosey and ridiculously ling-anorak questions.

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 20:50

Evitas for later - please don't apologise for going to EAT! I'm honestly not sat here doing nothing and it's been nice to chat to you too!

MandaHugNKiss · 01/07/2010 21:28

Hellllloooooooooo!

ValiumtheConqueror · 01/07/2010 21:34

Gah- is there anything I can tell you about inductions Arcadie (having been where your SIL is with both girls...)

I thought Portugese bird in Love Actually was quite attractive. They were my favourite love story.

Glad you liked videos. i can bore you even more should you choose bella sat in a restaurant highchaor for the first time today. Everyone smiled. i gave her a chip to occupy her after she'd polished off her tea. Everyone frowned. Don't you just love other people who sit in judgement? [she says with total confidence knowing that you have all previously stated that your judgy-pants are still too small to fit]

Hi Manda Know any Portuguese?!

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 21:36

Valium I've had 2 inductions as well but nothing that lasted this long. Thinks back to your original name.... didn't you have a 4 day long IOL? How many Prostins did you have? And did they let you out of the hosp once you were contracting?

I would agree that epi is essential to get through an epic induction...you've lost all ability to think rationally by the time things actually get going.

First time went in weds eve, I had five doses over three days, followed by enforced rest day on Saturday and my waters went that night. No contractions so straight to syntocin/epi and delivery suite. 17 hours and DD1 was born.

2nd time, as you all were witness to, was far worse. 5 doses, rest day, 2 doses, rest day (at home), double dose, and hideous birth. But beautiful baby. If you are having contractions they won't let you home because inducton is a medical procedure and they are required to monitor you.............................hth.

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 21:56

She's had 3 Prostin but was allowed out to go to TKMAxx ( respect to that lady) despite having irregular contractions. Am a bit as to what the docs there are doing.... It does make me realise JUST how straightforward my Inductions were and how privileged I was to have an easy ride all three times. SO hoping it all happens soooooooon.

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 22:03

Quick help if you're about. DSIL is still in hosp. Nowt's happening so they've sent my brother home. What can I possibly say in a text that might help at all......?

Lordy, Arcadie*, I'm trying to think.... Your poor DSIL (and DB). Presume she's still on the antenatal ward?

Is she at St Georges? (You said Tooting). If so, 2 of my friends have had babies there recently. Both said the antenatal care was excellent, if that's any consolation. (Probably not)

Arcadie · 01/07/2010 22:16

Thanks IWCAS Sariska and Valium Don't know which hosp it is. I 'm fairly sure she's in antenatal not delivery. Hope so for her sake because the screams on our delivery ward made me cry when i went for a hospital visit. Really really really stupid I know but I wanted their baby to be born today because both my DSs have a 1st of the month birthday. It just seemed to be a nice symmetry you know? Silly little Arcadie.

evitas · 01/07/2010 22:26

Hi again

We had a lovely dinner: chicken, mushrooms, Pak Choi and some salad. Now we are having "nursing tea" and chocolate bourbons

Arcadie. Still 1.30h till 2nd of July. Who knows...
