Tell me that they settle down as soon as that first tooth cuts through. Please?!

On night four of so little sleep and so much screaming I am in tears. He is screaming and screaming - have given calpol, teething gel, teething powders, and I might as well have given him a bunch of daisies for all the good its doing. His colic is also back with a vengeance, just to make life more interesting.

But this is all a sign they will be through soon... Right?

Pavlov · 20/07/2010 07:13

sirboob with DD, as soon as her first tooth came through, the screaming stopped for a while.

I guess the bear cub is teething. Although I am not entirely convinced that was the problem last night. Could be this whole not sleeping when meeting a milestone thing. Either way. He woke probably 45min-hourly ALL through the night, from when he went to sleep at 9:30pm. Doing this sort of squeaking sound, for me to pick him up, and as soon as I put him down he would squeak. I gave him some calpol but can't say it did much which makes me think not teeth. But who knows. They should be on their way by now surely? No red cheeks, or red 'blisters' in his mouth, although he is dribbling (but has for months), and he had a fever at the weekend (despite what gps told me about teething not causing a fever, DD always has a raised temp, runny nose and nappy rash as a tooth was about to break, ^everytime, it is how we knew one would come through!).

Anyway, so I am tired, DH is working with a friend all day. DD is at nursery so thankfully it is just bear cub and me, but even so, with him now moving the entire time he is awake, sleep is not on the cards today.

turtle23 · 20/07/2010 07:35

Hello again...haven't read through the thread as am running on empty atm. Hope all are well?

Tristan is a lovely baby but I may sell him on Ebay if he doesn't stop teething soon for a bit. He cut tooth 6 last night and I think I may go mad soon if the screaming doesn't stop. Am convinced he doesn't get enough milk as well which is insane as he is 23 lbs.

Will try and come back here a bit.

Pavlov · 20/07/2010 08:47

tigger 6 teeth? oh my word! that is a lot of teeth for such a little boy!

Fruitpastels · 20/07/2010 16:14

Unsettled nights here. Teething and milestones is probably why. I have a feeling C is saving up these teeth to all arrive at once! I'm a happy mummy today. Visited DS1's school with DS1 and he loved it, and I do too

tigger32 · 20/07/2010 18:32

fruits Glad you both liked the new school,

Pav Hen only has 2 teeth, its Turtles little one who has 6! (that is a lot for a little boy)

I'm with you all on the unsettled nights, we seem to be feeding 2 or 3 times a night and getting off to sleep takes ages now. We've just bought a caravan and booked a 2 week trip, I'm a little worried for other campers now.

Sirboob I hope you and Bryn have a better night, once that 1st tooth cuts things should calm for a while.

longwayaway · 20/07/2010 18:33

SIX teeth, turtle? Nice to see you, by the way

longwayaway · 20/07/2010 18:42

Brilliant night's sleep the first night at the new place, woke up before Maeve in the morning and didn't know what to do with myself! Last night, though... ughhh.

  1. Couldn't fall asleep thinking of all the things I had to do. 2. Woke up to domestic disturbance (couple arguing, loudly, on the street) going on for 20 minutes outside our window. 3. Woke up when an extremely loud vehicle (fire engine?), horn blaring, blew by so fast the blinds rattled. 4. Maeve woke up, needed a blanket as someone put her to bed w/ short sleeves and her little arms were freezing cold! 5. Woke up from a nightmare that I was being smothered. 6. DH's alarm went off, woke up, went back to sleep. 7. DH saying good-bye as he left for work, woke up, went back to sleep. 8. Finally got up when M woke up.

Exhausted!! On a good note, the internet was activated without any hassle so I can whinge about it on MN

BeckyBendyLegs · 20/07/2010 19:51

Hello! Still no teeth here... Toby almost sitting but I spend a lot of my time sat behind him my legs either side. It's nearly the end of term and I have six weeks of three children to entertain!

Longwayaway poor you! I have nights like that, add in cats sitting on chest purring at 3am.

longwayaway · 20/07/2010 22:39

Oh Becky if you're already having trouble sleeping can't you ban the cats from the bedroom for a while?

yikesascorpiobaby · 20/07/2010 23:05

BBL I am getting slightly freaked out about the school holidays too- made even worse by having to start teaching again at the end of them, after a year out... aaarrrggh!
Please send your survival tips!

turtle23 · 21/07/2010 06:21

Correction...7. I am a very tired mummy indeed. Anybody want to buy a baby?

ursigurke · 21/07/2010 07:42

turtle, I really feel with you as we have already a shiny set of 8! Try to see it this way: we will have a big break until the next ones are coming as they are usually breaking through in the second year only... But I am now paranoid and sometimes think I see white things under her gum

JuicyLips · 21/07/2010 13:24

still no teeth here. DD had her 8 month appointment (with a new and very lovely HV may I add) and got told she was doing well and a credit to us. so I only need to get Ds to behave as well was chuffed with that. Annabelle is so happy today which is nice. its a good day so far.

ursigurke · 21/07/2010 14:17

congrats to the compliments you've got

I met three of the other mums from my antenatal class and I'd like to present my latest "research" about the correlation of a baby's hair and it's teeth: The more teeth in their mouth the less hair on their head.
So Paula has 8 teeth which seems to be pretty much of a record but she is still practically bald. And the girl with nice hair has still not a single tooth. And the two others were in between. So about Paula's non-existing hair, I finally found something to take comfort in

JuicyLips · 21/07/2010 14:28

Ursi mine must be the exception to the rule, she has a little hair but not much, you can see her head through it still if that makes sense. she is blonde as well, so she still looks bald from a distance. I do like putting a girly head-band on her even though she has no hair.

ursigurke · 21/07/2010 15:58

JuicyLips, I guess 4 samples are not quite enough for serious research then . Paula usually has to wear her really girly hat with pink flowers when we are out as she is always in trousers and wears a lot of blue... still some people ask me about my little boy

JuicyLips · 21/07/2010 16:17

same here Ursi, think it doesnt matter what colour you dress them in, some people will always get it wrong. Although I did use some of ds's baby clothes for annabelle when she was a newborn so did wear a fair amount of blue for a bit!

MissInterpret · 21/07/2010 16:44

Hello everyone!

Been away for a week in Ireland so lots to catch up on..off to do that

MissInterpret · 21/07/2010 17:06

Work sorted, thanks laugs. I channelled my inner pavlov (miss you pav!) After a roundabout discussion where the guy tried to explain how he thought a 0.6 contract worked and then me telling him how I knew it worked...he got back to me via email to tell me I was right so I will be paid extra for any additional training I go on including 10 afternoons already arranged. Woohoo! Now sitting typing this on my new work laptop!

Been away in ireland for a wedding for a week so been spoonfeeding R completely as was too difficult when staying with others (and couldn't go outside as too cold/rainy!) and just tried to give her a bunch of lunch to eat herself and she just looked at it. And at me. As if to say, 'you really expect me to feed myself?!' Oh dear! Also, she is v mobile, pulling herslef up on anything she can and edging along the sofa. Think she will miss out crawling properly and just start walking at this rate.

SirB what's the news with the house?

Right, tea ready, back later!

Laugs · 21/07/2010 21:03

MissI glad you got the hours sorted. I need a good excuse to exercise my inner pavlov. I have started doing lots of spoonfeeding too as it feels WAY easier at the moment. I have taken to just semi-blending whatever we're having or giving a sauce with rice/ pasta and now can't really imagine myself going back. He has the odd finger food meal.

I am not going back to work this year - eek. Is anyone else? Mine is not through lack of trying! I just can't drum up enough work to make two sets of childcare fees worthwhile. I am hoping to do the odd bit of work, but with two of them at home most of the time (DD will go to a school nursery for 3 hrs each morning though) that's not going to be much. I am thinking of retraining to be a teacher. Am I mad?

Also desperately in need of Ideas for Entertaining Young Children. I'm taking DD out of nursery in 2 weeks as I thought she'd start at the school nursery in September. Then I found out she doesn't start until the second week in October. AGH!

Fruit great news about DS' school! I am so pleased for you.

Ursi Just to confound your theory, James has loads of really long hair and is currently working on teeth 4 and 5!

We have had a nightmare day which I'm sure is down to teething. He had 5 feeds between midnight and 7am last night, then there was an hour and a half today where he just screamed non-stop. He only just got his third tooth last week, so he's been a bit out of aorts. I hope when these two come through that will be it for a while.

Hope work is continuing to go well DWB and Pav.

Longway and BBL, wishing you long and undisturbed nights' sleep!

What's anybody reading by the way? I just finished A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore, which I thought was brilliant but very sad. Not ideal reading for new mums unless you're made of stern stuff.

Pavlov · 21/07/2010 21:53

laugs and missInterpret good to see a legacy has been left ! I have been back miss just not posted much, and only recently. I too am about to be unleashing my inner pavlov, or, would it just be pavlov? got something happening, or going to happen re training at work and me missing out. I Do Not Think So.

Only at work one morning a week til 11 Aug, then 5 mornings. I think miss it was you who was doing 5 mornings a week? I copied you if so

MissInterpret · 21/07/2010 21:55

Hi laugs, sorry to hear of the work situation Will get thinking cap on re children's entertainment though all my ideas tend to be for much older than your little ones - I have taught 9/10/11 yr olds mostly. I LOVE teaching and highly recommend it, though I must be honest and say it is very hard work and the PGCE training/first year are the most difficult. It was hard enough for me and I had no babies then. I did have friends doing it with little ones though (maybe not quite a little as yours) and they managed. I guess prioritisation is the key. You can train on the job and be earning at the same time with the Graduate Training Programme, which, with the support of a good school/mentor might work well. Good luck! I'm just finishing Utterly Monkey by Nick Laird which I picked up solely because I have a huge crush on ZadieSmithNickLaird and their perfect, intellectual, gorgeous life together. grr. It's an all right read but a bit full of try-hard description. First novel syndrome?

Pavlov · 21/07/2010 22:00

Bear cub is definitely teething, but they don't seem to be ready to break out though. All those with teeth now, did they become angry red 'blisters' before they broke? I know most of DDs did, but can't remember if they all did. I just remember months of crying and pain, then her first tooth (and the exact day, and the exact moment i spotted it!). Bear cub has not settled at night for the last two nights, even when his sleep is crap he goes off nicely and sleeps a good 2-3 hours before it all goes to shit. Last couple, he has fussed from the moment he has gone down, right through, and more unsettled and not wanting to sleep in the day (not that he ever does really). He is a bit more upset and cries more at mealtimes, normally he loves it, but atm he will cry, and still eat, so hungry, but guess it hurts.

I just tried giving him his next dose of calpol. Put him half asleep and grumpy on my lap, on the bed, and while I was sorting out the medicine to give him, he lifted his head, pulled himself up and forward, grabbed my boob and latched on! Cheeky boy..

MissInterpret · 21/07/2010 22:05

Oh dear pav, sorry to hear of bear cub's woes. Rosa has 2 teeth but they both burst through without much warning other than drool. (lucky mummy emoticon)... we are having a dose of separation anxiety here re bedtimes. She sleeps well in pushchair during the day but night time cries and we return to find her sitting/standing(!) up in the cot wailing and red-faced trying to get her to be best buds with her soft toy rabbit in vain attempt tpo replace mummy/daddy at night...Any other ideas?
