Welcome to our new cliquey thread !

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Amberc · 02/06/2010 16:17

well done Dewin!

I forgot to say happy birthday to Eddie! Belatedly...Happy Birthday!

I feel better now. Not being sick just nauseous. Horrid. Hope it doesn't ocme back again.

My sister only has 1 week left before her due date and I'm so excited. Talking about the labour and stuff reminds me of us all when we were due, desperate to have natural births with no pain relief! (and then for me straight afterwards wanting to beatify the person who invented the epidural!).

DewinDoeth · 02/06/2010 16:30

LOL, I wish. I'm home alone with Iestyn from when I pick him up (in just a minute - I wanted 20 mins to sit down in my house, IYKWIM, but the Waitrose queue was 10 mins of that time...) and judging from previous nights this week, he'll be stroppy. But let's think positive! (Really, I've dedicated the book to him but he appreciates medieval Wales...well, not at all. )

Abdn going to the gym is great, and I wish I could - I recommend fitness DVDs as you know (I'm a saddo but it does make me feel good afterwards, it's endorphins or something innit?)

Amber so exciting about your sister! The time has flown! But lol, I never planned on having a natural birth. I work on medieval women, and that's natural. Not for me!

poppy34 · 02/06/2010 19:58

Ah sorry to hear you are down - if you want any help or questions on your co probs please ask as am chartered accountant and tax adviser - if I can't help will try and blag someone to help.

Yay re book dewin- am sure iestyn will love it. And there is no such thing as perfect age gap.

Deb lol at Stefan story- they grow up young..

Rolf- sorry you had night from hell
and weeks plans were spoiled. Hope tonight better.

Scan fine- still really earlyas 6wk 2 so having another in a month but was sac there and we thought could see heartbeat but scan man thought too early and suggested better to wait a few weeks. So far so good and thanks for all your lovely wishes.

Right better rouse myself to get some food...

poppy34 · 02/06/2010 20:01

And amber do keep us posted re your sister and in this context nausea is good.

And also re therapy (not counselling) I am glad I stuck with it as can see difference now with how handle this pregnancy compared with earlier ones.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 02/06/2010 21:21

Lol dewin, I wasn't amused by AH's vomit story at all - they were faces not ! God knows how I would have coped with that - not well, I feel .

Fab news on the book .

poppy, fab news on the scan.

Amber, very exciting about your sister. Does she know what she's having?

And thanks for the belated birthday wishes.

OP posts:
SpiderWilliam · 02/06/2010 22:04

Poppy - good to hear the scan was fine.

Dewin - many congratulations on finishing. Made me feel all mushy that you have dedicated the book to I. What a special gift to give someone. I think the Gina Ford summary on age gaps is that small, middling or big age gaps all have pros and cons, nothing is perfect.

Still in need of something funny? What about this:

Text from friend this morning who was at the local swings to say that Michael Buerk was there peddling the roundabout. It is a kind of roundabout with 6 stations with bike pedals attached for propulsion. It is scaled down for kids, so as an adult you end up with your knees round you ears. It's a funny image to think of him on there. I assume he was entertaining his gradchildren, rather than peddling for fun.

Rolf · 03/06/2010 08:41

Thanks for all the cheerful stories. Spider wins, mainly because her story didn't involve vomit .

Dewin well done!

Poppy so pleased the scan went well. How are you feeling about the pregnancy? FWIW, I was loads better during my pregnancy with T, than the one with DD1.

at spin the bottle, Deb! DS1 hates girls so no way would he join in. DS2 likes them and would probably have been quite keen!

Amber good luck to your sister. Hope she's ok.

We had a lovely day yesterday and went to the park with a group of friends, and took a picnic. Then one of the boys had a friend back for supper, a film and a sleepover. I'm taking them to the beach today. I'm so pleased the weather is good. It makes half term feel like a holiday, although of course the best holiday is not having to get up for school!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 03/06/2010 08:46

Ohmigod! I started this thread yesterday based on a book I've just read by Sue Palmer - and she's posted on the thread! Well, at least she says she's Sue Palmer and you obviously can't prove that in cyberspace but her post seems perfectly legit!

That may not mean much to those of you not in education, but Sue Palmer is a bit of a guru in the classroom .

Lol at spider's story - what a great mental image! I'll never be able to take him seriously again!

Enjoy the beach rolf .

DebInAustria · 03/06/2010 09:26

Interesting thread Eddie and great that the author contributed.I thought the boys would have that outdoor experience here but despite the fact that children walk to school on their own from 6 years old the children rarely play out.

PenguinNZ · 03/06/2010 10:58

Spider - Ry has orange fanta today and didn't have a daytime nap again....maybe those two things are connected! Then again just before bed he stole one of my ferreo rochers from the cupboard and went down no problem. [hmmm]

Amber - Poo here varies from day to day, but we def have had solids, tho they are usually a bit rabbit poo like. Eddie makes a good point re the sitting it in tho.

Sounds like you had a lovely day Eddie. I liked the phrase birthday bath as if a bath was an annual event.

Poppy - could i be cheeky enough to put a request in for the Julia Child? Altho I have just read a book about a guy training at Corden Bleu in Paris and all the french food talk sort of made me homesick (sort of because I have never lived in France, but I still love their food).

Dewin - Age gaps: DH and his sis = 6 years, Me and my sis = 9 years, Me and my bro = 11 years. And my brother & sis had a different father to me. Until we had a massive falling out a couple of years ago (made up now) I don't know two sisters closer. We shared flats and houses together for about 8 years, travelled Oz together, etc. Age gaps are less important than personalies IMO.

Abdn - Thank you so much, have fb msg'd you my address. Re: depression, my therapist at the Priory told me that the only real cure is time, which is ironic since I pretty much followed a full time timetable there! I found drugs to be useless, others swear by them, so don't rule them out. I found and still find, ensuring I leave the house every day (at one point I got agrophobic ) and get a bit of exercise that leaves me a bit breathless and exhilerated works (even if it's just a ten min run). Altho I smtms think that's simply down to the smugness I feel whenever I exercise! I don't want to go on, cos I feel like I am already, but I have lots of stuff from the P that I can send you if you like. Some of it is helpful, some isn't, but all of it has worked for someone IYKWIM.

Dewin - a six pack whilst pregnant!? Go and stand in the corner with Neenz and her too big size ten maternity jeans. I would ask for something from 13th century Wales, but I think I'm living in a time gone by here enough as it is! Speaking of which, I think that about 60% of white teenage boys here have rats tails.

Passes a cup of espresso and sympathy to Rolf.

Amber - In a strange way, I am delighted that you are feeling sick! Sorry if I missed this earlier, but just wondering, is it possible there's more than one in there? Or am I just freaking you out now?

Eddie - Ry said I love you to DH on Mothers Day here! And has never said it since.

Deb - Step away from the exchange rate now! No good can come of it... at spin the bottle.

Deb - "Are there many things to do around you?" No. It is so bad I have even been to wood chopping contests for entertainment!

Abdn - The vomit story made me LOL, sorry. But I'm amazed at the calm reaction from Dewin knowing her aversion to all bodily fluids. In fact Dewin, it was probably the idea of vomit that gave you such awful morning sickness in the first place! Actually you're jinxed aren't you? You hate bodily fluids and yet you were sick throughout your whole pregnancy and then had enough milk to feed Wales. You poor, poor woman. (Well done on the book BTW, is that it or will you have to go through publishers notes and stuff?)

PenguinNZ · 03/06/2010 11:14

Amber - That is great to hear about your sis after all she went through. Hope she has a quick uneventful labour with as much pain relief as she wants!

Dewin - It's not just Iestyn, it's the youth of today, no appreciation for medieval Wales at all. Not like in our day...

Poppy - Great news re: scan and you get another soon too!

Spider - I've just read that Gina Ford book I think (the toddler one?). I liked the Michael Buerk story too, no-one looks good on those roundabouts. Eddie - Isn't he now the Royal correspondent, I wouldn't have thought you took him that seriously anyway!

PenguinNZ · 03/06/2010 11:31

Eddie - OMG at one partticular poster on your thread!!! Aarrrggghhh. You might be interesting in googling "Take your kids to the park and leave them there day" and also this site: freerangekids.wordpress.com/

DewinDoeth · 03/06/2010 11:45

Lol 'no-one looks good on those roundabouts'. Also true of bouncy castles IMO.

Ugh, feeling ill at the thought of bodily fluids now...I blame Penguin...

Book has now been sent to the publisher, and it's done; there will be proofs to go through but that should be manageable.

SpiderWilliam · 03/06/2010 11:54

Snort @ NZ boys having rats tails.

I think Nicholas Witchall is royal correspondent. When the coalition was being negotiated he seemed to spend days standing on Pall Mall with nothing to say whilst. The Queen was in Windsor.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 03/06/2010 14:09

yeah, NW is royal correspondant now - and manages the obsequiousness (sp?!) required for the job very well!

penguin, hmm, KWYM about that poster - have you read her latest diatribe that she's just posted? She's a prolific poster on MN and I always find her tone very negative and aggressive so no change I suppose. But the assumptions she's made about me are quite breath taking!

OP posts:
Amberc · 03/06/2010 15:19

Ooh Eddie - how cool is that?!! I read that thread and feel the same as you. I did post something similar about how kids can't roam free these days for fear of 'predators' and whether it was just reported more in the news. I am lucky here and a large part of why we moved here is that we are enclosed but there is still a park within our development and two ponds with frogs and fish. So I am hoping Luke will play out without me worrying too much.(agree about EPIS - does that person ever agree with anyone?!)

Penguin - ha ha thanks for being pleased I am sick! It comes and goes but was horrid this morning when I had my head in the sink. I'm sure I would feel better if I actually was sick. There is a chance of more than one as I took clomid and produced three follicles. It's not a high chance though and I am hoping it is one but would deal with it if it were more! Penguin I have no books to send you that are readable - sorry!

Thanks for all the nice comments re my sis. I am more excited than her!

Good news Poppy re the scan. Mine is next wednesday at 6 weeks 5 days (how do they know that) so I am also hoping to see one heartbeat!!

BTW Penguin your posts are on super form at the mo - you must be very happy!

Dewin - how lovely that you dedicated your book to Iestyn.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 03/06/2010 16:26

Lol Amber, she just won't give up - she is always in the right of course. Tedious woman!

OP posts:
Rolf · 03/06/2010 17:20

Interesting thread Eddie, although it's a shame that cross lady had to create a scrappy sideshow about nothing. It was surprising as well as annoying, as I didn't think that your opening post was contentious at all.

Does anyone know anything about getting one's street designated as a safe street? Or it might be called something else, and I'm not even sure exactly what it means. Something about making it safer for children to play out, so maybe speed bumps??

poppy34 · 03/06/2010 18:13

Eddie- WTF at that poster? Why waste time on a threa if you disagree on something so trivial?

Will try and sort book tomorrow penguin.

May not be around for a week as off on hold tomorrow pm an loads to do and no broadband there. Oh and 4am start not helping my energy levels

EddieIzzardismyhero · 03/06/2010 18:33

My thread has been made a discussion of the day . What an accolade !

poppy, have a fab holiday x

rolf, I will have a look tonight.

OP posts:
abdnhiker · 03/06/2010 19:39

I find the 'regulars' rather tiresome - it seems like they're always on every thread and saying the same thing... If I wanted that I'd talk to my mother

penguin I got your msg on fb, I'll pop the books in the post to you soon! And thanks for the offer of info re depression - I think I'm probably okay but I've promised myself that if it gets worse again i'll see the homeopath who's also an excellent counsellor. I think once I acknowledged it I felt better if that makes sense....

poppy thanks for the offer of tax help, I think it's okay. DH will owe an extra £24 on his taxes from salary with this whole company change thing but I'm guessing that's okay as he'll also owe a lot more than that when we file his tax return...

TheBuggerofSuburbia · 04/06/2010 09:07

Lurking as usual - if I've missed any congratulations for babies or books, please accept them right now!

I've got a bit of a dodgy tum, so I've taken today off work - I feel ok, just don't want to venture too far from the bathroom. Hope it clears soon though, I've got some friends coming round tonight. Typical. At least I can tidy the house up a bit though, it's a midden.

Eddie, I took a quick look at your thread - MN is a funny place these days, I don't venture far from here, book swap threads, food and gardening! I posted on food a while ago asking for 'gourmet' veggie recipes, and I got some really arsey replies - who'd have thought for something so innocuous. Ah well. The joys of the internet.

After much deliberation I finally chose a barbecue and it's being delivered today - I am sadly excited. And tomorrow we are going to the Scottish garden show thing in Edinburgh.

Hope you all have nice weekends planned in the sunshine!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 04/06/2010 12:51

AH, at talking to your mother! I agree - and they treat anyone they perceive as 'newbie' with complete disdain. She even told me I'd posted in the 'wrong' forum and I should have posted in book reviews . I'll post it in breast and bottle feeding if I want to!

Course, now lots of people are posting on there she's back and acting like some modern day poet. Hilarious!

bugger, can't believe anyone could get arsey with you about gourmet veggie recipes!! Crazy!

Hope your BBQ lives up to expectations .

I am craving Pimms. Is there anyway to make a non alcoholic alternative? Not vimto.

DewinDoeth · 04/06/2010 19:54

Apparently, Spider, Schweppes Summer Punch is the same but I don't know whether it's easy to get. You're not the first.

Just come back from the beach - it was lovely! Live on an island = beach after work! Whenever I go I remember why I'm slogging it out at Bangor. I'll fight for the quality of life.
