July 2005 babies

Welcome all those with fresh new babies. Oh the joys and tribulations. Post the lot here!

I hope I haven't overlooked a previous thread here for us. Anyway, here goes.

DS2 was due 3 July but arrived 29 June, 9lb 6oz. He has been growing nicely and is 4 weeks old today. I am breastfeeding and have already had mastitis and thrush but am pushing on with it. Biggest problem is sometimes he sleeps too long in the day and then wakes up a lot in the night, not that he stays awake for long, just long enough to feed and go back to sleep. The Midwife says that I shouldn't worry about his lack of wakefulness for the moment in the absence of any other issues, and to see how he is going around the 6 week mark. She also said I should wake him up during the day, which I have been reluctant to do, but I think I will have to do. Anyone else got an overly sleepy baby who doesn't seem to be growing out of it quickly enough?

hello mrsd! sorry posts crossed!

hoxtonchick · 27/09/2005 20:19

ah, i can tell i've definitely got enough with 2 in that case bagpuss, i can't wait to give all the baby stuff away!

v. good turn of phrase, mrsd, "not sufficiently bothered"! i'm going to steal it .

mrsdarcy · 27/09/2005 22:20

HC, I think it's a variant of "am I bovvered?"

Yay, DD has been asleep in her own bed since 8.45! It was preceded by wiping her snotty nose on me so I now have bogey epaulettes! hmmm...could there be a link between this and my not being in a contraceptive-requiring-situation?

Bagpuss, DS2 being 6 months old is quite a way away. My feeling at this stage is do what everyone is happy with rather than with an eye on the future. I didn't know DS1 had a traumatic entrance into the world - how horrible for you.

I have a vague feeling of wiping out difficult pregnancy/delivery with positive ones. Like Scientologists and their "audits"! (sorry, I was reading about Tom Cruise in the doctor's waiting room today!). It's a dangerous theory to apply to pregnancy though (trying not to offend the Scientologists here..), as you could carry on indefinitely couldn't you?

Off to bed. Night night.

hoxtonchick · 28/09/2005 08:57

another phrase frequently heard round herer mrsd...

Eulalia · 28/09/2005 18:48

ds2 is my last baby too and I've started clearing out girl baby clothes and am not bothered about it as the lack of space here is so depressing with girl stuff up to age 3-4 and boy stuff up to age 6. I amassed 10 bags of girl baby clothes and have given some to a friend. I have kept a few little things which I will pass onto my grandchildren or maybe great nieces/nephews.

Not really too worrried about contraception at the moment but we go on holiday next week so got more time for that kind of thing! lol at the rustling!

Mrs D at you getting your boys to bed at the same time. I have to keep my older two apart most of the time and put them to bed separately. Only thing they do together is watch DVDs or jump on the sofa.

'Routine' is putting dd to bed about 7.30-8, ds1 9ish and ds2 usually falls asleep maybe 9-10pm just wherever he happens to be and I put him into his carrycot. He comes in beside me when he wakes about 2-3am and again maybe 6ish and we get up about 7ish. At the moment I pretty much have one child or the other around all day ie 7am till 10pm but its the only way to manage them all. I also have the pleasure? of having dd in bed with me as well as she refuses to sleep in her own bed so its kind of cramped.

Must go the kids are fighting...

Bagpuss30 · 28/09/2005 20:31

Thanks mrsd, I think you are right . dh has started to call ds2 "the limpet" and I don't think he means it jokingly - I know he has a point but 6 months is aaaages away yet, plenty of time to sort things out. ds1 has a congenital heart defect BTW (for anyone who is interested/doesn't remember) and spent much of his time as a newborn either very poorly or in the PICU at Alder Hey. It was pretty bad TBH but I think I have worked it out of my system now (also ds1 is more than OK so I have a lot to be thankful for).

Forgot to mention ds2's 8 week developmental check. He is fine and currently running on the 25th centile for all measurements, weighed 10lbs 15oz. Must dash as I am literally throwing things into a slow cooker, then dropping dd at childminder and picking up ds and taking him to a soft play centre for a couple of hours... its all go...doing packing in the middle of everything too.

hoxtonchick · 29/09/2005 21:28

dd has learnt to suck her thumb! it's so cute. ds did the same, just for a couple of months then stopped, we'll see what happens with her.

we had a nice time at a mums & babies cinema showing of pride & prejudice today, she was one of the quieter ones.... mil is taking ds swimming tomorrow so dd & i are venturing down the road to a breastfeeding support group as i'm fed up of my nipple still hurting.

right, trying to watch spooks, but i doubt i'd understand it even if i concentrated...

mrsdarcy · 29/09/2005 22:03

Eulalia, good news about the development check. I bet you're pleased.

Your mother and baby cinema trip sounds lovely HC. I love Pride & Prejudice (how could I not!) but I'm not sure about Keira Knightly. I don't know if we have a mother/baby viewing at our local cinema - must find out. I took DS1 to the Barbican cinema a few times but we were thrown out because some old biddy complained that he squeaked when he was feeding . Hope the breastfeeding thing helps.

Just checking in to say hi everyone. No news really. Baby doing fine, dw doing fine. I'm doing fine. Trying to sort an entry for a small Chelsea Garden which needs to be in within the next week. Just landed a sponsor, so that will likely be a fun project if somewhat daunting. I'll let you know if our application gets accepted next month.

Hope you and yours are all OK.

mrsdarcy · 30/09/2005 19:20

my goodness Hub, you garden as well! Is there no end to your talents?

Belo · 01/10/2005 08:32

We need a gardnener!

MrsD, I agree with your doubts about Keira as Elizbeth Bennett. I too am a big Jane Austin fan. I also can't imagine any other Mr Darcy. Colin Firth was fantastic. Especially the scene as he strode through the water..... Ooh, I'm getting all excited now !

We haven't really managed to get any routine going. Poor dd2 gets dragged along with whatever we're doing and whatever suits us. She goes to bed at whatever time I do. Can't get her down much before 10 though.

I've been taking her to baby yoga on a Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon she sleeps fantastically, but that is as much as a routine as we've got. I would like to try and get her into a routine though as I'm sure it would make things easier for me in the longrun. Can't face any Gina Ford type thing though.

Eulalia, have a fantastic holiday. Everybody else, have a good weekend!

Eulalia · 01/10/2005 08:46

Can't believe its October. Feels too mild at the moment but not complaining.

Not too worried about lack of routine but just glad that ds isn't nearly as irritable in the evenings now. I actually had time to play with the other two for a short time yesterday. ds also coped well with the vaccination and slept for most of the day afterwards.

well I must get on with packing - going to be hard with dd around seeing all those clothes - she'll just want to change her outfit again and again...

Good luck with the gardening project hub2dee.

hoxtonchick · 01/10/2005 09:53

we went to see the bfc yesterday, apparently i have too much milk! it all comes gushing out so dd just has to sit there & not make any effort. therefore her positioning isn't perfect, hence hurty nipples. so now i have to take her off each time she makes funny sounds when feeding. she isn't too impressed with this.... it isn't hurting as much though so we'll persevere.

she's 6.46kg now (14lbs4) & is on the 75th centile. she was a bit grumpy after her jabs yesterday, & ds trod in dog poo so we had rather a fraught afternoon.... all made better by making a cake though. oh, & poor dd looks a bit silly as she's losing her hair at the sides.

hope everyone has good weekends.

hub2dee · 01/10/2005 10:02

mrsd - ... is the Pope Catholic ?

LOL. Can't ballroom dance.

Thanks Eulalia.

mrsdarcy · 01/10/2005 11:12

DD has a mad bald patch at the back of her head but still has her tuft on top! She looks like Jack Nicholson's lovechild!

hoxtonchick · 04/10/2005 08:00

both children slept all night in their respective cots/beds . i of course didn't as i was checking on them, but still.... boobs like melons this morning though!

merryberry · 04/10/2005 10:57

ooh routines! sorry i missed all that chat. we'er doing a tracey hogg approach sort of thing but basically we've gone with Vin's flow and send thanks to every deity on/off the planet every day that he is great at night and relatively predicatable in the day. it's a lot of luck it seems. we've tried varying his routines a bit to suit us more but frankly cant be arsed with the fuss so early on.

now, how do i add a pic in a member profile? anyone know? we also lucked into a gorgeous photo while away...ooh, got to unpack more...xx

Eulalia · 04/10/2005 11:32

I am just about going demented trying to pack with dd dragging things out of drawers and cupboards and playing with them for about 30 secs. I think its easier hwen ds is at school but I am not sure he does shout at her but there is less mess. ds2 of course won't have a proper nap to let me get on. Will be up till god knows when to get everything done.

Sigh, never mind trying to concentrate on the beach... we fly tomorrow which is also our wedding anniversary

I also seem to have too much milk- sometimes it just keeps on coming out even when ds has latched off. Would like to send it to bottle bank but nowhere near here.

Anyway probably won't be back on again till after hols - back on the 20th so see you all later

Harriett · 04/10/2005 11:57

Hi everyone, long time no chat!
happy anniversary for tomorrow, Eulalia and have a lovely holiday.
well. things are pretty good down here apart from my poor old back which is still really bad and I am still fairly housebound apart from trips to Sainsburys- the glamour! I am now waiting on physio and an appointment with a specialist.
All this isn't bothering my little one however, she is absouletly glorious, she has found her fingers and if she wakes up, just sucks herself back to sleep (hoorah!) she now sleeps from 8pm to 7am with two very sleepy feeds at 12 and 4- I feel so lucky! She is also grabbing things and is getting very frustrated that she can't sit up herself yet, she has a good go then exhaustes herself and falls asleep, it's very cute indeed!
She also was having fun grabbing at my long hair so I have taken the plunge and had it all cut off, I am still in shock as I have had long hair for years, but it is so much easier to do now. I did have one 'oh my god, I've cut all my hair off' moment so I bought myself a pair of shoes online to cheer myself up. So easily pleased!
Hope you are all well and all little ones are as gorgeous as always! I am very jealous of all these holidays that have been going on and may have to go and eat a slice of cake to compensate...
diet starts next week.....!

mrsdarcy · 04/10/2005 14:41

According to my MIL you can make a fortune selling excess breast milk on e-bay

Happy anniversary and have a good holiday Eulalia. Welcome back MB. Did you have fun?

DD is being christened at the beginning of Nov so I am thinking about drinks and food. Harriett - when I have some idea of numbers could I pick your brains about drink?

DD is also cramming her hands into her mouth and babbling away. We have the loveliest chats. I have just been to John Lewis to get her some clothes and all the ones I liked were sold out in her size. Bother. I'll have a look online. Any recommendations?

hoxtonchick · 05/10/2005 08:37

ewwwwwwwww to mrsd's mil - what has she been looking for?! i can reccommend ebay for small girls' clothes though, i've got dd loads for virtually nothing.

dd can wriggle backwards now, mostly off her changing mat (which is on the floor), or in the cot. a bit disconcerting...

i took both children on the london eye yesterday, as we'd been to visit dp who works near there. ds loved it, kept spotting our house. i remembered what a wimp i was about heights & concentrated very hard on feeding dd. £12.50 seems a bit steep to feel sick for 40 minutes!

merryberry · 06/10/2005 09:37

ooh Harriet - are you used to yr short hair yet? it is sucha change isn't it.

where did eulalia go for her holidays?

and i wish vin wold get his hand eye co-ordination soon. i need him to start playing instead of being shown things endlessly...i'm not doing much else! he is also trying his hardest to sit, and i now find him in odd places in his cot as he can sort of jack knife himself backwards...

we have bought back some lovely pics from our holiday. i've put them on 'slideshow' to make for easy viewing and force y'all to look at them all >cackle<

however we also seem to have brought some fleas back from their manky effing cats

so we are in the throes of a massive clean down today. it's positively aerobic...and will be tomorrow and the day after etc etc etc sigh
