July 2005 babies

Welcome all those with fresh new babies. Oh the joys and tribulations. Post the lot here!

I hope I haven't overlooked a previous thread here for us. Anyway, here goes.

DS2 was due 3 July but arrived 29 June, 9lb 6oz. He has been growing nicely and is 4 weeks old today. I am breastfeeding and have already had mastitis and thrush but am pushing on with it. Biggest problem is sometimes he sleeps too long in the day and then wakes up a lot in the night, not that he stays awake for long, just long enough to feed and go back to sleep. The Midwife says that I shouldn't worry about his lack of wakefulness for the moment in the absence of any other issues, and to see how he is going around the 6 week mark. She also said I should wake him up during the day, which I have been reluctant to do, but I think I will have to do. Anyone else got an overly sleepy baby who doesn't seem to be growing out of it quickly enough?

lol Hub! Have ordered one bum hugger and one hemp nappy with coloured stitching from here - ellas house . They are velcro so also daddy friendly .

hub2dee · 19/10/2005 15:04

Are you using cloth nappies full time ? We, er... haven't yet, aside from a few days trial.

Bagpuss30 · 19/10/2005 15:42

Yes Hub we are. Even dh, who really wasn't looking forward to them (but I insisted, lol) is quietly impressed. ds2 has been in them since he was 12 days old now . Which did you trial? I have all manner of different nappies now and really haven't found any that disagree with us strongly. I never bothered to try any first, just went with the suggestions on the Mumsnet best.

Harriett · 19/10/2005 16:40

Hi everyone. Just my opinion on the great bottle debate if I haven't already bored you all to death on the subject! We were using Avent until my sis bought us two tommee tippee bottles and we never looked back! dd feeds better and faster and doesn't get as windy as she used to- although she is the queen of the posset and is getting really good with her aim- generally whatever I have just put on clean/ and/or the sofa.
I am now trying to sort out my plan for going back to work- there is a form on the dti website (dti.gov.uk/er/individual/flexforms.htm) sorry I don't know how to do a link! which outlines your rights to demand flexible working conditions, which I fully intend to do! I would like to go back part time until next year and have an option of working from home (and a company car and a diamond tiara but I don't think I'll get any of those) so I'll keep you posted on how I do. Must go, baby crying and cat needs feeding. bye!

hoxtonchick · 19/10/2005 18:47

it's here . didn't arrive 'til 6 though, so we had rather a fraught day. luckily ds has a cold so didn't go too crazy staying in all day. i did though! dp not overly impressed, but no shouting as yet. dd is asleep in it & i am very pleased. not taking her for a walk round the block now though....

pinkmama · 20/10/2005 11:36

Thanks for all the welcomes back!

Bagpus - the school run is a joke. I got into trouble from the secretary this week for being late too many times and ahve been told I will be getting a letter. I promptly burst out crying in the reception area. All very embarassing I have to say. DD1 will go ballistic when the letter comes, she is very very keen on school rules, and wont be happy that her silly mummy has failed again. I sobbed to teh secretary that I know every other mum can manage it by I cant. She really didnt help by then telling me that only one other child in the whole school (480 kids) has been anywhere near as regularly late. So had a joyous morning today with me dragging ds up the street by the arm with him screaming as we passed all the organised parents coming the other way "you are hurting my arm". I felt very proud . but hey, we made it on time! I really do not know how other people manage. Why am I the only one who cant

Hope you enjoying your pram HC!

oh dear i give up never mind hope someone can look at it.

Harriett · 20/10/2005 12:23

Panda girl- she is just adorable! my, we really do have the most gorgeous babies in the world!

Bagpuss30 · 20/10/2005 16:05

Panda, she is lovely .

Oh pm, poor you . We have had our fair share of lateness too but we always manage to make it just in time for the bell in the morning. I tend to put dd in the toddler seat on my pram and then I only have to push that and shout at one child to hurry up .

Well dd is officially on half term now and ds1 only has tomorrow to go until I can get a lie in next week . Doubt you shall see much of me as dh is on holiday too and will no doubt be policing the amount of mumsnetting I am doing .

mrsdarcy · 20/10/2005 17:08

You are good about the nappies Bagpuss. I have used mine about 6 times! I tried one at night recently (with an extra layer) and by 3am her grobag was soaking. Is it worth perservering? I borrowed mine so don't have a huge outlay to justify.

Yay for the buggy hc! A good buggy changes your life, I think.

Harriett - I'm really cynical about the employment stuff but for what it's worth I'd suggest going in to see them armed with detailed and specific proposal that it would be hard to argue with. What sort of childcare are you going for?

Oh pm, it's so awful feeling as though you are the worse mother in the playground isn't it? I have just become a school governor so feel as though I have no margin of gormlessness on this sort of thing - pretty difficult when every morning I have a big fight with DS2 about getting dressed and end up in a total panic.

mrsdarcy · 20/10/2005 17:08

Panda - she's gorgeous! Sweet smile!

mrsdarcy · 20/10/2005 18:52

I really will stop posting after this one ...

Harriett HELP! - I have just realised that DD is being christened 2 weeks on Sunday and we are going away on Saturday for a week - so I've left it very late. I have invited about 60 adults and 60 children but was also going to extend an open invitation to the people at church, so the numbers could be anything from say 40 to 200. I have no idea how many of the invitees will turn up. That's really helpful isn't it? Where on earth do I begin planning drink for such an uncertain number? There's an Oddbins who will deliver to our area.

It will be midday on a Sunday so although we are talking about Irish Catholics (and I can say what I like about them as I am one!) I'm not planning, and neither is our bank manager, to make it a big booze-up. I want to be able to drink a toast to DD but apart from that I reckon there'll be a small hard-core contingent who will get plastered but the rest will probably be very sedate and want a nice cup of tea.

Where to start? And should we conduct this thrilling discussion on e-mail so everyone else can continue talking about lovely baby things? help help help

Bagpuss30 · 20/10/2005 18:52

[preening emoticon] . Mrsd, if you are happy with the Kooshies for daytime then I would continue with those and buy something ultra absorbant for nights. Personally my favourite night nappy is a 60cm terry square folded (it's easy, honest) and then fastened with a nappy nippa and covered with a motherease air flow wrap. Nice and simple and reletively cheap.

Gosh, ds2 is dribbly today, hope it isn't teeth .

I am sitting here with a glass of wine for company as dh is out tonight with clients - bet he'll have a better nights sleep than me .

mrsdarcy · 20/10/2005 20:12

gggrrrr...we're going on holiday on Saturday so dh gets the inevitable phone call at 6pm today with some work that he has until Saturday to do . Literally every holiday since we moved up here has been interrupted by work. I guess we'll go on Sunday instead and just lose a day.

What is annoying is that he gets so overworked that he "needs" the holiday more than I do, so I just carry on doing all my mummy jobs but with a 38 year old to take care of as well! and no-one to take care of me.

hoxtonchick · 20/10/2005 21:17

buggy is wonderful . i think dd may be a little too hot in the buggy snuggle, but hey, it looks good!

she screamed for ages tonight. i think it's 'cos i've got a childless friend round (her & dp are cooking dinner - result!).... after walking & rocking for hours i eventually put her in the cot, turned the mobile on, & she stopped immediately & started grinning. grrrrrrrr. went & checked on her & she's wriggled up to the top of the cot, is sucking her fingers & happy as larry. honestly!

hub2dee · 20/10/2005 22:44

Hi all. Any of your babies doing the 'choking on saliva' thing... kind of like they get too much spit in their mouth and then it goes down the wrong whole and you sh*t yourself cos they start choking ?

I'm gonna start a thread to get more feedback, but as all ours are around the same age, thought I'd ask here too.

Tonight dd had a feed at around 5:30, and dw was just rousing her for a 10:30 feed (putting on bib in cradle of arm etc.) and she gave dw a big shock with a rather major choke (more prolonged that the normal 5 seconds 'drank too quickly' gasps they make)...

I ran in and did an upside down forearm back slap jobby (on the baby, not the wife), and afterwards she continued a few choking noises and squeaks (a bit like the 'wheezing asthma' sound IYSWIM, and then she settled and has just now fed OK. We were about to leg it to the hossie.

dd also gave dw a one-off projectile vom yesterday that she said was clear, so i presume saliva (or stomach acid ???) again, it was during a mini choking thing, you know like when they drink too fast etc... though this was on the nappy changer (dd has been burped, been held upright etc. for at least 5, maybe 10 mins first).

I just wondered if this sounds ultra common and ultra ordinary, or a bit unusual etc... did any asthma reveal itself to you in this way (I have it in my family, it's a possibility dd might have it)...

Thanks for any feedback.

Oh Mrsd, sounds very similar to us - hope you manage to get away on time. dh is on hols next week but we are staying here so you can bet he will be worrying about work all week.

Hub, I have no idea about that TBH. ds2 did make little choking noises when he was smaller but hasn't for a bit. Maybe get it checked out with a GP to put your minds at ease?

Pamina, you are putting me to shame with this dieting malarky - well done on the weight loss though . I have resolved that I will start dieting after Christmas when I have finished bfing ds2 and will no longer have the appetite of a small elephant. On a positive note I have had to start tumble drying my jeans as they fall down if I don't, so some weight must have gone!

Bagpuss30 · 21/10/2005 10:40

Oh, was going to ask the bottle feeders how much milk they are giving now. ds2 has been having 2 x 6 oz bottles and then bf the rest of the time, but recently has been crying after each bottle so have just upped it to 7 oz which he seems to be able to cope with. It seems such a lot of milk though for a small baby - I am worried I am over feeding him and according to the age guide on the packet he should still be on 6 oz bottles.

Mrsd, I have just e-mailed you, sorry for the delay .

pinkmama · 21/10/2005 11:01

MrsD, grrr for you about the holiday, sounds a real pain. Hope you get away soon and you do find some way of resting.

Hub2dee, I cant really comment on the chocking thing, maybe dd2 does it all the time and I am too complacent! I would get it checked just to put your mind at rest otherwise you are going to keep worrying every time it happens no matter what we all say.

Pamina - very jealous re weight loss. I have been running 3x pw, doing the school run and eating slightly more healthily and I have lost 2lbs in 3 weeks. i do not understand how I can have upped my exercise so dramatically, stopped eating as many cakes and biscuits and lose so little weight. I was back to pre preg weight by this stage with the other 2. Feel rather sulky now!

Whilst I was posting my message yesterday feeling rather sorry for myself, dd2 was under her baby gym and ds was playing, or so I thought! Just as I finished my post dd2 let out an enormous scream and I dashed through to discover that (and he happily admitted this) that ds had bounced my gym ball on her and then layed on top of her to stop her crying. It was a beautiful moment in our house as I am sure you can imagine. dd2 crying, me screaming at ds, him crying - a proud mummy moment. I spent the rest of my morning panicking that she had alsorts of terrible internal injuries until my friend came around and reasured me that perhaps she wouldnt be gurgling and smiling at her if she was in mid haemorage!

At least today can only be better

hub2dee · 21/10/2005 18:03

Hi Bagpuss... we're on 180 mils usually 5 times a day.

Went to the GP. She showed us how to look for the unusual diaphragmatic breathing type movement in the belly / rib cage area which is a more reliable sign of asthamtic-type breathing difficulties than just 'grunty noises' which, of course, they make all time. She didn't seem overly worried by dd's dribble chokes which is reassuring. We gave her a bunch of roses and a smelly M&S candle cos she had been so fab with our endless toing and froing at the end of of Dee's pregnancy. The doc was chuffed, and also seemed truly delighted to see Camille's good length, good weight and good looks, LOL.

We're (stupidly ? bravely ?) going to the Baby Show tomorrow.

Eulalia · 21/10/2005 23:53

Hi all - got back yesterday at 3.30am (groan) Holiday was good but not exactly relaxing with 3 kids! However was great not to worry about cooking, routines etc.. started off a bit iffy as there was a mix up with seating on the flight out and I was left with all 3 kids with dh on his own several rows behind me. That was hard but people round about helped and ds2 was handed down the rows of seats several times as I took the other two to the toilet.

ds2 was wonderful as he'd just got out of his unsettled evening phase. He's been an easy baby anyway but by the time we were away we were able to go out for a meal most evenings and he was no bother. He does have a sun tan believe it or not. It must just be reflected sun because he certainly wasn't in the sun but he is slightly brown. He was born with a very olive skin and dh is like that (don't know anything about his ancestry as dh is adopted and is an only child). ds1 and dd look v healthy too and loved the beach. ds1 I am sure was just about managing to swim in the sea too.

Will catch up with everyone later as I need to get to bed now.
