July 2005 babies

Welcome all those with fresh new babies. Oh the joys and tribulations. Post the lot here!

I hope I haven't overlooked a previous thread here for us. Anyway, here goes.

DS2 was due 3 July but arrived 29 June, 9lb 6oz. He has been growing nicely and is 4 weeks old today. I am breastfeeding and have already had mastitis and thrush but am pushing on with it. Biggest problem is sometimes he sleeps too long in the day and then wakes up a lot in the night, not that he stays awake for long, just long enough to feed and go back to sleep. The Midwife says that I shouldn't worry about his lack of wakefulness for the moment in the absence of any other issues, and to see how he is going around the 6 week mark. She also said I should wake him up during the day, which I have been reluctant to do, but I think I will have to do. Anyone else got an overly sleepy baby who doesn't seem to be growing out of it quickly enough?

MB, it's not just you, I'm dizzy with tiredness! DD has been sleeping badly the last few nights, and not really settling after the 4am feed. DS2 has been getting up as well, then DH's alarm goes off at 5.30 (he's v busy at work).

Ah well, these phases don't last for long (do they, do they...?)

Into the 2nd week of 3 school runs/day.... Last week I ended up having to feed DD at school a few times. If I thought small boys were pretty rubber-necked at the sight of my huge pregnant belly, it's nothing compared to the chance of a glimpse of udder . They stand with their noses by DD's head and try to act casual...

Lolasmum, I too envy your holiday and running skills. I don't think I could run or do anything else high-impact as it would hurt my boobs. Am I the only one?

Oh, MB, I'm rubbish at expressing too. I did it a bit with DS1, not at all with DS2 and avoiding trying with DD.

merryberry · 11/09/2005 20:10

laugh mrsd i had my first taste of youngsters and their fascination with yer baps in a playground today when i had to feed. there is so a hint of i want some about their little faces though!

i am going to try a few more weeks with the expressing as i am building up to get ill if i don't get some extra sleep now and then. vin has this real 'ew, fish milk' look with formula now sadly (he used to take it fine) and practically spray paints us with it when we try to give it.

so h2d - thanks for the tip, i've been hammering away at one breast at a time - what lovely common sense your tip is - and how tired am i not to think of it myself.

anyway can't be that knackered. am loving the maltese falcon again on TCM. oh humphrey, humphrey why was i born too late for you??

sigh

Eulalia · 11/09/2005 21:55

Lolasmum - sounds idyllic

Re pumping - Try pumping from one breast while feeding from the other if you can manage to hold everything that is! I never did this myself but was told this later on and it makes sense as the other boob often leaks while feeding.

V lazy about expressing though. Had to for ds1 but never did for dd and probably not bothering this time either.

Just had to wake ds2 up not long ago as he's been sleeping most of the day and wanted him changed and fed before it got too late. Must be making up for a bad couple of days when he hardly slept at all. He seems a bit snuffly with a slight cold. Pretty tired myself - today went for a sponsored walk with the school, took all 3 kids and was surprised how far dd managed to walk. There was a BBQ and bouncy castle afterwards.

Well I am off to try and get to bed - I think ds is just falling back to sleep again

merryberry · 13/09/2005 07:29

Expressing is beginning to work and i got away with the night feed as dp did it and WOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOO je suis une femme reborn etc etc etc.

Off to hop to it with more housework.

Yours hypermanically, xfx

hoxtonchick · 13/09/2005 07:53

wow, impressive, mb. i wouldn't waste your energy on housework though ;). i only tried expressing once wtih ds & haven't tried at all with dd. ds likes playing with the pump though which is a little offputting....

all is well here. dd is almost 11 weeks now, & fits into her 3-6 month clothes surprisingly well! she made me laugh yesterday, a friend put a tempting piece of cord in front of her which she was very interested in, but couldn't work out what she had to do to grab it.... the discovery of her hands can't come too soon.

pingu beckons, then soft-play. hope all are well. xx

hoxtonchick · 13/09/2005 07:53

that was meant to be

Eulalia · 13/09/2005 08:19

Merryberry Great news.

ds seems to have a bit of a cold so the night feeding is a bit difficult and I have to actually sit up so he can breathe better. Otherwise he is fine.

dh's birthday today - he is 60! I am finally going to take down all the baby cards. I didn't want the mantlepiece to look bare so at least I've got dh's cards to replace the baby ones. It should be very dusty there too!

merryberry · 13/09/2005 12:00

happy birthday mr eulalia!
hope your son is better soon.

i have done so much wow sleep rocks. anyone want their housework doing ?

eastyorksmum · 13/09/2005 17:36

hey july mums hugssssss

im just lurking again hope you and your babies are well, can somone tell me how to upload a pic on my profile please?

mrsdarcy · 13/09/2005 21:50

Hello EYM Sorry, my fish finger brain is of no use to you in your photo quest. I'd like to know how it's done though.

MB - sleep surely does rock! After a few difficult nights, DD has settled down a bit and I'm feeling much better for it. Not quite as uber-momma as you but pretty darned skippy. What sort of pump are you using, MB?

How is your holiday Lolasmum?

Happy birthday Mr Eulalia! I hope Paul is feeling better. DD had her first jabs today and is feeling fairly miserable. It broke my heart. I was tough as anything with the boys' jabs but a complete drip when they stuck the needle in DD

hub2dee · 14/09/2005 10:31

LOL @ sex-discrimination re: emotional response to baby's jabs, mrsd ... dd also got very angry /upset, possibly a little ratty for a day or so, but no probs. Gave her calpol just before the jab, dunno if that helped at all.

EYM: You know Julyers give the best photo resizing advice, eh ? Much better than their neighbouring months ... easiest thing to do is to e-mail your pictures to resident MN resizer, user StGeorge. Otherwise you need to use some friendly little photo resizing utility / Photoshop / Paint etc. etc. to size it to no bigger than 18Kb IIRC. You do this by physically reducing the size (in pixels), possibly reducing the depth of colour palette, and increasing the level of jpeg compression (ie. making it a poorer quality image in theory)... with a bit of luck, you have a jpeg that fits !

HTH

eastyorksmum · 14/09/2005 12:40

yes hub2dee hugssssssss and your pics of your babies were beautiful thank you for the advice. My baby boy is now 9 weeks old and hes so big lol doesnt fit in his carrycot anymore.

Eulalia · 14/09/2005 19:19

ds is smiling now although not a lot as he still tends to be grizzly when awake.

He's also gone to only pooing every 3-4 days so nappy changing is pretty easy. That's about all I have to talk about today!

Harriett · 14/09/2005 22:06

happy birthday to Mr Eulalia!

I have had such a nice day with dd today, she's been really smily and loads of fun, I have been having a total 'Hallmark moment' day today!

How is everyone else doing?

mrsdarcy · 14/09/2005 22:56

We've had a good day too. The boys and I have been playing a horrible game that involves whacking aliens on the head with a plastic mallet, and DD loved it - she lay on the bed windmilling her arms and legs, smiling and gurgling .

When we dropped DS2 off at school this lunchtime we saw DS1 in the playground, and he was so pleased to show off his sister to all his friends. He boasted to them that he gets to see her all day

We also had our first attempt at cloth nappies today. Goodness, her little legs are practically spreadeagled by them - hope it's not uncomfortable for her. I reckon I'll look in on some of the cloth nappy threads...

Eulalia, you're post really made me giggle!

Bagpuss30 · 15/09/2005 14:31

Hello all. lol Eulalia, I haven't much to say today either. School run is wearing me out - today a nightmare - one at nursery this am and one at school this pm! Feel like I am living at that school, maybe I should buy a house opposite!

Mrsd, how is the cloth going today? Which type of nappy are you using? I am getting totally addicted and have way too many nappies in ds2's collection - they are all so sweet looking .

Speaking of which ds2 now crying, need to go and change him!

Back later.....

pinkmama · 15/09/2005 19:19

hello everyone. wish i could find a way of getting on here everyday so i could keep up. sorry about lack of capitals but typing one handed which i am sure you all understand.

dd2 is still lovely. her birthmark grows daily but my gp has agreed to refer me to try to put my mind at rest. its funny watching what people omit to mention when they first see her.

school routine getting better and we not been late yet which is probably better than our pre baby record.

she has nasty nappy rash, although i wonder if its thrush? its not clearing and makes me want to cry for her. pondering wether to bother gp about it. any advice?

Happy birthday to eulalias dh!

pinkmama · 15/09/2005 19:19

ooh - my first ever double posting!!!!!!! How did that happen?

mrsdarcy · 15/09/2005 22:07

Pinkmama, how long will you have to wait to see the consultant? I really hope it's not getting to you. For nappy rash, I found metanium very good for DS2 who used to get quite a bad rash. It was the only thing that helped.

I have managed to be on time for school for the past 2 weeks of 3 school runs per day. Tomorrow DS2 is full-time so we'll have an easier routine. It'll be just me and dd from 9 - 3.15

Bagpuss, I'm using kooshies nappies. I borrowed them from a friend so I'll see how I get on with them. I've been very lazy with disposables and don't change her nappy very often (she isn't very poopy!) so I was surprised at how often I needed to change the kooshies. What sort are you using?

Hello everyone. We came back from our mini holiday in Cornwall last Thursday but there were a few hiccups in getting reconnected to the net but have now discovered the joys of broadband. Inspite of the effort of the journey - the change of scenery was good for us all and ds's tantrums seemed to disappear overnight.

Pinkmama - I have found raw silk liners which I bought from www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk were good at helping the skin to heal and to prevent a hint of a rash from getting worse. I have put them inside both cloth and disposable nappies. I use Weleda nappy cream. Also spending time out of the nappy if at all possible seemed to help.

Am soooo tired at moment as dd thinks daytime is from 5.00 pm - 1.30 am with a couple of catnaps along the way. Then is always awake at 5.00 am and often up then for a couple of hours. Hope you are all having a better night.

hoxtonchick · 16/09/2005 07:39

glad you are seeing the consultant pm, & hope it turns out to be nothing. i second the metanium suggestion for nappy rash - most chemists should have it, & supermarkets. really looking forward to next week. xxx

dd & i visited harriett & her dd yesterday & had a lovely time. then i took dd to the local mums & babies cinema screening - what a fab idea. she slept the whole way through. pride & prejudice next week, yay.

really impressed with the weight loss pamina. i have been useless this week. will start next week with renewed vigour, just as long as i finish the chocolate in time....

Bagpuss30 · 16/09/2005 14:39

Hoxtonchick, I am useless at diets at the mo as I find that there always has to be emergency Green and Black's in the fridge . Well done Pamina that really is an achievement .

latearrival, glad you enjoyed your break. Can't help you with the night times I'm afraid, ds is pretty good, all I can say is that they all find their routine eventually .

Pinkmama, glad you have a referral. ds2 has another birthmark which has slowly appeared on his thigh, just by the knee. I am still keeping my eye on the other one too as I googled and didn't like what I read, although fortunately his seems OK so far.

mrsd, well how long have you got, I could bore the pants (hehe) off anyone at the moment about nappies. I have loads of different ones - tots bots, motherease, bumbles and some flat terries. I have also just bought some fuzzi bunz which are really slim and are currently drying on the line. I can't wait to try them as some of the nappies I have are too big for normal clothes over the top and so many outfits just never get worn. Oh, I am very of you with your full time school boys - i have another week of pt before ds1 can go all day.

ds2 is now 14 lbs 3 oz . I think he has hollow legs...

He managed to be sick in his car seat earlier so I have had to take it all apart and wash. I am praying it will dry quickly so that we can go out in the car later.

latearrival · 16/09/2005 22:46

Bagpuss30 - it is good to know that there are others out there needing Green and Blacks to see them through. I think I have something like 2 stone to lose - I am keeping my distance from the scales.

DD is calling - it is here evening marathon feed again.

Pinkmama and Bagpuss - I am sorry you are having concerns about the birth marks and I hope the consultants appointment was helpful Pinkmama.
