Welcome all those with fresh new babies. Oh the joys and tribulations. Post the lot here!

I hope I haven't overlooked a previous thread here for us. Anyway, here goes.

DS2 was due 3 July but arrived 29 June, 9lb 6oz. He has been growing nicely and is 4 weeks old today. I am breastfeeding and have already had mastitis and thrush but am pushing on with it. Biggest problem is sometimes he sleeps too long in the day and then wakes up a lot in the night, not that he stays awake for long, just long enough to feed and go back to sleep. The Midwife says that I shouldn't worry about his lack of wakefulness for the moment in the absence of any other issues, and to see how he is going around the 6 week mark. She also said I should wake him up during the day, which I have been reluctant to do, but I think I will have to do. Anyone else got an overly sleepy baby who doesn't seem to be growing out of it quickly enough?

Awww - lovely - you are a very good looking family Are you both quite tall - I can't believe how long your dd's limbs are?

hc- wow what a big girl you have

It's a beautiful day here so we are heading out for the beach.

hub2dee · 03/09/2005 09:44

Not really. I'm 5 ft 10 AND A HALF. dw is 5' 5" I think.

The postman is quite tall though.

Eulalia · 03/09/2005 16:20

hub2dee

I have added a new pic of ds2. Here -

pic of ds2 taken at 5 weeks

Question for everyone - when did your wee one first smile?

hoxtonchick · 03/09/2005 16:28

what lovely pics from everyone. will try & post one of dd.

eulalia, dd smiled at 5 weeks, ds at 4.5. but i met someone at baby clinic this week who's ds only started smiling at 9 weeks. so i reckon you don't need to worry yet. when did your other 2 smile?

hub2dee · 03/09/2005 16:51

Eulalia: Your little hero is super cute.

I think I got one smile at 5ish weeks, and we get odd hints of smile occasionally, but nothing with great regularity at the mo (dd is 8 weeks, 4 prem).

hoxtonchick · 03/09/2005 19:32

here's dd

merryberry · 04/09/2005 09:06

aw lovely pics. like stroppy/smiling mamma in H2D and oh HC she's got eyes you could paddle in! What a beamer.

off for another swim this am. and then maybe to yummy kids if it opens. xx

hub2dee · 04/09/2005 09:17

mb - come for lunch or whatever. Unless you're having your scallops !!!!!!! Don't think we've got anything on. Anyway, I'll e-mail you our phone number etc. If you meet mamma, I'll make sure she's not scowling, LOL.

Eulalia · 05/09/2005 08:33

hoxtonchick - beautiful little girl

hub2dee - I know that dd smiled earlier but like you I adjusted for dates but the other way round (she was 2 weeks late). Have lost my diary for ds1 but think it was about 6 weeks. I am a bit paranoid about autism but ds2 seems quite different and more 'connected' than ds1 was even from birth.

Hectic weekend, Thought I was going demented some of the time with ds1 being super-freaky, dd rather clingy and ds2 not settling. Picture ds1 bouncing off the sofa, constantly bugging poor dd and having to prise them apart and me in the middle clutching a wee baby.... dh is busy of course fixing up the house as usual...

However not like that all the time. Went out to the open air pool as I wanted a swim before it closes for the season. First swim since the birth - its only been 5 weeks but I am OK and everything 'down there' back to normal. Have my check-up at the docotr later in the week.

Must go and get ds out of bed.

pinkmama · 06/09/2005 20:27

ooh, lovely lovely babies! HC, she looks so much like ds, but also like dp, which i cant wok out as i think ds is complete mini you! looking forward to meeting her.

DD has been quite smiley today and gave her dad his first smile as he was getting bit envious of fact she was saving them just for me! Smiles make up for a very grumpy sunday which I fear was down to me drinking some cava at a party on Saturday. Very disappointed my daughter doesnt like the fizz. Wouldnt care if I had had a lot! Maybe she just fancies something different.

Back to school tomorrow and the dreaded routine. Fingers crossed!

hoxtonchick · 07/09/2005 08:58

really hope you aren't reading this as i type pinkmama, but are striding up that hill! xxx

MommyD · 07/09/2005 13:03

Hello all. QUICK QUESTION - are yours all alert yet? ds3 is 8 weeks and STILL feeds for 10-20 miuntes and then sleeps for 3.5 - 4 hours. He has one wakeful time, usually early evening. I think I am lucky but wondering when he will wake up a bit more. Can't remember my other two being like this. He's gone from 7.5 pounds at birth to 12.5 pounds at 8 weeks. Maybe that's why he's asleep all the time?

merryberry · 07/09/2005 15:03

not mine moomyd: swapsies?? oh to nap so long in the daytime.

well ds is in his chair and i'm singing along to high society on tcm which seems to please him hugely. he's such a good boy. we did the bus to and from the passport office and i had to bf
before during and after the counter and he did great.

glad to be home though.

Hi Pamina, I lost loads with WW years back - weight i'd piled on after giving up smoking. It was very good. Do they have special advice for you as a BF mum?

Good luck with it all. I really enjoyed the no points soup stuff...xx

eastyorksmum · 08/09/2005 13:00

Eulalia · 08/09/2005 15:58

Hello EYM

MommyD - if you are concerned about your ds then it may be best to check with your HV. Probably just a sleepy baby. How is he when awake - does he look around, focus on you etc? Is he holding his head up? Do you not have a developmental check at 8 weeks (or maybe this is just done in Scotland)?

Been indulging myself on eBay - today arrived a lovely brand new nursing pillow which doubles up as a baby gym with soft dangly toys - only £11 and have just bought a baby nest & 2 sleepbags for £7 - all including P&P!

ds2 is 6weeks tomorrow. Had my check at hte docs today and now have a huge pile of leaflets about contraception to wade through. Not sure what to do. Abstaining for the moment though

Harriett · 08/09/2005 16:30

well done on your bargains Eulalia- I was just looking for some toys on ebay too but ended up buying a pair of high heel pink satin shoes heaven knows when I will ever get to wear them and now my poor baby has no new toys... bad self-obsessed mummy!
dd had her 6 week check yesterday and is now nearly 12 pounds and very long for her age- it's no surprise as she is going through a growth spurt and feeds what feels like constantly!
mommyd- Duclie was very very sleepy for weeks and we were getting a bit anxious too but she has since more than made up for it- it sounds like you have your days numbered and I bet your ds will make up for it too. Hope you can enjoy it while it lasts!
and just to let you know that Hoxtonchick and I had a lovely lunch together yesterday and her little Florence is such a darling, smiling all the time, unlike Dulcie who cried and wouldn't let her mummy finish off her chips. Maybe she is trying to tell me something...
oh well, back to feeding- catch up soon x
ps- anyone heard from mirashark recently? I hope she is ok.
pps- for those who have posted lovely comments about my horrible scar- it had got infected and I am now on antibiotics to hopefully clear it up. Fingers crossed that's it for that problem!

Bagpuss30 · 08/09/2005 17:16

Wow, how busy is this thread?! Just thought I'd better say hi. Hope everyone is well. Harriett, glad you are on the mend, I can't imagine what that must feel like. ds1 started school on Tuesday and its all going well so far. Caused a stir at school when I went with my E3 - dd in toddler seat and ds2 below - everyone thought I'd left the baby at home . I must say everyone's pictures are gorgeous - such a bunch of lovely babies on this thread! Hub I am impressed with the .mac page. I am nagging dh to do the same sort of thing for us. Also, spotted your thread on nappies and wanted to say well done . I have some fuzzis but not sure I like them - hope you manage to find some that you like though. Pamina, well done with ww. I am letting the side down here I'm afraid and not really dieting properly at all. ds2 is quite alert now and coos at me loads - will post pictures when I finally get my act together. Got to go - one handed typing very tricky!

hoxtonchick · 08/09/2005 17:45

harriett & i & the girls & my ds had such a nice lunch together!

mrsdarcy · 08/09/2005 21:40

Harriett - lol at your ebay purchase! My friend is 38 weeks pg with her first and she is fretting about whether to buy a hugely expensive Maxmara coat that she may not fit into after the baby is born!

hub2dee · 09/09/2005 11:45

Ref: sleepy babies etc... mommyd: just to let you know dd (9 weeks now, 4 prem) does a serious amount of sleeping. It is deffo part of what makes her reasonably easy IMO... In the first few weeks it was more or less 10-20 mins feeding, 20 mins burping, hours of sleep and then more food. I'm not saying she was always like this. She had hours / days when she was more awake / active / unsettled / crying etc. but she was remarkably sleepy... some are more awake... some are not !

Yesterday, though she didn't really nap much all day - looking around a lot / moaning / hard to quieten etc. and was out and about with mum, and miracle of miracles she had a feed at 9PM and didn't stir till 5:15 AM which was bloomin lovely. (On the other days till now, when she has been more sleepy, she would still be feeding every 3/4 hours...

Maybe extra jiggling / stimulation etc. would keep her up a bit longer when you desire it ??? !!!

Hope everyone else is doing OK. Slightly busy on the house at the mo so not around much.

Lolasmum · 09/09/2005 12:59

Hello all. Typing this from a hillside overlooking lake Balaton in Hungary. Very civilized. Dd2 for the last couple of days has been doing loads of daytime sleeping and I'm loving it. MommyD, enjoy it! I'm sure it won't go on for much longer.

As to the weight loss... Hungarian food would blow up the weight watchers calculator! But, I've had 3 x 3km runs since I've been here. So, hopefully I won't be putting on any weight. Pamina, I thought ww's wouldn't let you join if you were breast feeding? Or, was that just my imagination and my excuse? I definitely need to do something when I get back home. I seem to have stuck at being 11lbs over weight (well, what I was when I got pregnant, but that wasn't ideal either) since dd2 was 2 weeks old.

Harriett, love the sound of the shoes. Eulalia, it really sounds like you've got some bargains. I sold all of my maternity clothes on ebay so I've got lots of money in my paypal account. I think an ebay session is calling...

merryberry · 11/09/2005 08:30

Ah Lolasmum I envy you your lakeside and your stable weight! I yoyo without trying and am stuck in kentish town for far too many months now! desperately need a change of scenery. lucky we've got a break booked too in ooh 15 days time!!

we'll vin is in his 9th week and is 3 days post first jabs and i am shattered for the first time properly! no adrenalin running, extra feeds at night to cope with vaccs it seems and i have no elastic left in me yesterday and today. don't yet have enough expressed to get vin thru a night of dp feeding...though i also fear he won't take a bottle now.

and gawd i hate expressing. anyone else the same? have tried hand and electric pumps, both ache/hurt and the result is a slow ounce and a half it seems. well, better perserver.

hope you're all more bushy tailed than me, xfx

hub2dee · 11/09/2005 10:05

Hi f, mears advised my expressing dw to try pumping one side until flow starts to slow, and then switching to other side, and then going back IYSWIM... rather than pumping till empty and then switching. (Hope I've got the right.. it's called 'double pumping'). Oh, and more in the AM.

Finally managed to squeeze the odd smile out of Camille !

Hope everyone is OK.
