raggie i was pregnant summer of 2006, when we had the scorching heatwave. DD was born 1 July and I recall June being terribly terribly hot. I just sort of lounged around desperately wanting her to arrive, and I was not even huge! Just found the heat hard work. But, not as hard work as having a newborn in a heatwave, a baby who struggles to manage her own temperature to do age and size, resulting in being in a filthy hot hospital room with no air con (they will get cold, these babies) and no windows allowed to be opened! (DD was cold though, she had 3 layers of clothing on, a hat, and 3 blankets and her temp was 35.9 at one point, they were like 'right more blankets, we will get the heat lamp' ). And then, out of hospital, fans on, not being able to tell if DD was too cold or too hot! And she loved being swaddled, geerreeat way to overheat a baby in the summer! Winter baby much easier, apart from the mucous!

scarlotti · 20/05/2010 21:41

Pav was it the copper coil you had? The mirena is a much better version so I'm told. Personally it aggravated my pmt as I'm really susceptible to hormonal contraception, but then the pill did that to me too

Ioan had his second swimming lesson today and he was great! He loved it!

Raggie congratulations on the job!!

Contraception. I did use Cerazette for a bit... now I find a stick does pretty much the same job and I don't have to remember it every day How do you ladies find the energy??

Lucy and I went to our first mother and baby group in the village today. She needs to start socialising a bit because she's starting to get a bit peculiar around people. She can tell they're not her mama and does a wobble. It was very nice, she was the oldest baby out of seven (I think I was the oldest one, too ). There even was an eight days old girl there, cutest little thing. I still remember how funny they look before they unfurl and fill up a bit.

Pavlov · 20/05/2010 22:19

scarlotti it was the mirena coil, not copper coil. Never. Ever. Again. It was, in fact, the same as abstinence. I would be better off just abstaining. And skorpion rarely

Pavlov · 20/05/2010 22:19

Oh yes, sorry raggie I meant to say too, congratulations!!!! How rude. Sorry.

Ninjacat · 20/05/2010 22:52

Just passing but couldn't resist a quick comment on contraception: Copper coil used here. Not everyones cup of tea but I love it. No hormones, no condoms, no scares.

wook · 20/05/2010 23:51

Contraception: being permananently irritable, having baby in the marital bed, husband who is scared of/overly reverential towards breastfeeding, husband who is so petrified of babies he wishes to remain chaste until snip. Plus add dispute about snip to this mix.
Zero chance of conception!
Side effects: fancying Ed Balls.

Ninjacat · 21/05/2010 00:03

Oh Wook, Edd Balls? That's serious. You may need profesional help for that one. Ming Campbell on the other hand....

Ninjacat · 21/05/2010 00:04

Menzies

Butterpie · 21/05/2010 01:17

Oh contreception, i am refusing to go on the pill until at least my periods restart (I don't see why I should have fake periods) and condoms are rubbish for us (ie they are what we were apparently using about nine months before the birth of both of our children).

Too squeamish for anything else. I am crippled for a day after shagging anyway due to SPD, so unfortunately this premarital bed is a bit lacking in action these days. Wedding is looming though, so here's hoping things hot up soon!

Laugs · 21/05/2010 07:50

You have reminded me that there is a pack of Cerazette by my bed, gathering dust. I should start taking it even though I currently share a bed with two children and no DH (NOT my idea, DD won't go in her own bed!). I can just see one of us coming on here, sheepishly pregnant, because we haven't started using contraception yet. Bagsy not me - this flat is a squash and a squeeze already!

I don't know if anyone remembers that last summer one of my good friends was pregnant but lost the baby to a rare condition. Well, she has just had a baby boy! I am so excited and pleased for her and most of all glad that she doesn't have to be pregnant and scared any more.

raggie I hope Rosa had a better night. James was a lot better actually. Maybe because he was only wearing a vest? He's still hot and snuffly, but happier. Do runny noes and eyes go with teething? I hope so and that it's not another one with hayfever.

Ooh I have a hen party to go to this weekend. The whole family are going! It's in Harrogate, where DH is from, so we're going to stay with the in-laws and I will nip out and back to feed James where necessary. I really hope I get out for the evening as it'll be my first night out, but I'm going to have a couple of drinks in the day, just in case.

ursigurke · 21/05/2010 09:42

Contraception? Nothing here.
There is not much action going on here anyway, I somehow forgot about sex at all (not my poor DH). Interest seems to slowly come back now.
I haven't had my period yet and as I am still mainly bf, chances are low anyway. So we know it could happen but it is very unlikely and as we want more children anyway it would be ok if nature just decides to give us a smaller age gap than we wanted.

Today we had breakfast on our little terrasse and just talking about how happy we are, until we were suddently covered in bird poo and/or dirt. It was just everywhere, even on Paulas cloths. We weren't sure if it was really poo (some of it definitely), as it was just too many spots or if it was dirt falling down from the antenna which was still moving (I think a bird had actually crushed it... maybe a pooing bird). So now I'm scared that that stupid cherry tree from the neighbour house will not only offer us the occasional cherry dropping on our side but also attract lots of birds.

Butterpie · 21/05/2010 09:52

Those of you with more than one, do they take a tag team approach to sleeping? I never seem to get them both asleep at once!

Laugs · 21/05/2010 10:03

Mine did to start with. That was so annoying! Now they both sleep in the night (James wakes lots of times though) and only he has naps in the day. I would give anything to get them both to nap in the day, but when DD does she is up until at least 10pm.

Trikken · 21/05/2010 10:12

butterpie ds wont nap any more, (but will sometimes fall asleep on me whilst curled up on the sofa) Annabelle does but not at set times, seems to be different every day. so means my golden time for doing chores is gone, but they are both pretty good at night time. so once i've got ds to bed I then sort out dd and give her her last feed then put her up in her cot and that's it, both down for the night. though last night ds decided to wake up and scream cos he couldn't find 'monkey' and woke up everyone in the house including the baby, so then she kept waking up. am so tired today. Don't know how I'm going to manage working at 5 as well.

maman2tom · 21/05/2010 10:23

OMG you have to have sex to get pregnant so that would probably involve me and dp a) being in the same room b) without any dc and c) both being awake....in that case i don't really need the pill at all

skorpion · 21/05/2010 10:38

Laugs how wonderful for your friend!

Ninja really? Mind you, there is something about a mature gentleman...

Butterpie when is the wedding? Are you nearly ready?

wook · 21/05/2010 10:44

Ninjacat Menzies Campbell???? He's old enough to be your grandad! But there is that Scottish thing going on. Still, I'd rather Alistair Campbell than Menzies Campbell!
Ed Balls is lovely

Laugs fab news for your friend, I love a happy ending.

Ursi I had a bird poo disaster- sold something on ebay which was new with tags but musty from being in storage since last summer. Washed it, hung it over the clothes drier to dry quicker, went to get it in of the line, HUGE bird poo sitting on it! Left a nasty yellow mark, goodness knows what the birds had been eating.

Anyone else who cannot wit for Ashes to Ashes tonight?

wook · 21/05/2010 10:44

or even wait

hobnob57 · 21/05/2010 11:08

I'm with maman on the contraception front. I have little enough drive as it is normally (unless I'm TTC). Strangely things improved for a bit after dd2 but I'm definitely back in the bf-as-turn-off camp.

butterpie are you still getting physio for you spd? We have self-referral here and I've been a couple of times now to get things realigned since pushing the pram with one hand and dd1 on her bike up hills with the other hand whilst bent over seems to be aggravating things somewhat. Pilates definitely helps but will take a while for you to see results. But I'm a firm believer that core strength is the only long-term solution. Mine never went away totally between pgs but the pilates helped prevent things from getting too sore too soon with dd2 I think.

wook · 21/05/2010 23:50

Where is everyone?
No one to talk Ashes to Ashes with! (Dh doesn't watch but he did walk annoyingly in front of the front room window while it was on)
Or compare merits of vtech baby walker with others....
don't tell me you are all on dates with dhs/dps!

DontWorryBaby · 22/05/2010 00:04

Hi Wook

I've been doing an assignment for uni this evening and DP has been waiting patiently for us to watch tonight's Lost, which is now on!

So Baby Walker... do we need one?! I've got one of those big centres the baby can 'stand' in and spin round but not a walker. Would you guys recommend buying one? Off to look at the vtech walker if I can find it...

DontWorryBaby · 22/05/2010 00:05

OK my next question would be, should we go for a 'stand and push' walker or one that they sit in?

ursigurke · 22/05/2010 08:39

DWB, we have nothing that supports Paula in a standing or sitting position, no door bouncer, no walker, none of this centres where they can stand in. Although I'm quite sure that she would love those as they offer certainly lots of entertainment, I feel like she should lern sitting and standing on her own first and that those things delay it or teach her a wrong way of doing it. (I'm sure it all depends on how long they are in). Actually, I even felt it is wrong when one of my friends always protected her girl from tilting over when she started sitting. I thought she has to lern to fall correctly as well. (I do wonder though if I will calmly watch Paula tilting and falling once she is trying to sit and walk )
And I can't wait to get Paula a little baby buggy to push her doll around (once she can walk).... and obviously I can't wait to get her her first doll. What's the right age for that? Not sure if it is slightly mean of me to not get her any of those things as she always has to lie on the floor but then this is maybe the reason why she is always on her tummy and already quite advanced in moving around and on all 4. She doesn't have much choice of fun things to do

scarlotti · 22/05/2010 09:38

Was out with a friend last night for drinks, lovely. Had a little too much wine though, am still a lightweight!!

DWB we have a walker, but only as we bought one for DS1 and he didn't like it much. I find it handy for a short time if I'm say in the kitchen getting things done. I also use the bumbo and door bouncer for the same reasons. Ioan loves being upright though so wouldn't lie on the floor no matter how often I tried.

Any of these sorts of things are fine in moderation

ursi a friend of mine's dd was like Paula and always on her tummy/floor. She crawled quite early as Paula seems to be on the way to doing, and was then walking at 8 months! Now she never sits still!!

Have a few child free hours this morning so am looking forward to that meeting a friend who also is child free for a bit - we won't know ourselves
