raggie congrats on the job!

wook enjoying work very much and I don't bother to pump while I'm there. I seem to have adjusted ok, although DS2 doesn't take much milk during the daytime now so I guess that helps.

There's a fab dish from AK called Lovely Lentils that goes down a treat here!

OP posts:
wook · 18/05/2010 22:40

catively? er...actively I meant!

Scarlotti I always used to love walking out of the house without loads of bags full of baby crap nappies, toys etc to go to work. Felt so light. I suppose one day I will know that feeling again, if I ever get a proper permanent job again!

SirBoobAlot · 19/05/2010 10:08

Why is it Bryn will only roll onto his front when I am out of the room?! This morning is the third time in a row I have gone to the loo with him on his back, on his play mat, and come back to find him on his front grinning at me as I walk into the room! Don't get me wrong, its lovely, but I'd like to see it happen at some point

Either that or we have a poltergeist who keeps turning him over just to freak me out...

Ninjacat · 19/05/2010 10:28

Lol Boob Alfie used to do the same to me. Everytime I left the room he rolled. Didn't care who else was watching so hence everyone else saw him roll before me!!!!
He rolls everytime you put him down now then cries with frustration so not sure which is worst

SirBoobAlot · 19/05/2010 11:09

Glad to hear its not just me, *Ninja& How are you feeling today?

Meant to ask - are any of you using the pill / implant etc again yet? I am once again on my period and in agony (I always have bad periods... I honestly think they are worse than the first half of labour!!!) but don't know if its too early to look at contraceptives yet.

scarlotti · 19/05/2010 19:46

SirB you can (and should!) use contraception now as you are super fertile after having a baby. You need to use one that is progesterone only though while you're breastfeeding - e.g. the mini pill as opposed to the combined pill. If you want something longer term then the mirena coil is very succesful for many - it has progesterone in it which stops your bleeding too which can be a godsend. I had one and didn't have a period for 18 months They tend to 'last' 5 years.

Oh, and Ioan has rolled once and I didn't see it! He is much more interested in sitting!

He also refuses to take any kind of milk at the cm, so I need to think of snacks I can give him instead. Any ideas? He already has fruit and yoghurt as puddings so I don't want to be boring and give him the same things all the time.

OP posts:
scarlotti · 19/05/2010 19:47

Oh, and raggie we use Cow and Gate but only because he found SMA too rich. Just try a few and see what she likes.

OP posts:
DontWorryBaby · 19/05/2010 20:14

raggie I think you can buy cartons of formula milk which are individual feeds so I'm going to try that to check Ethan can digest it before splashing out on a big tin.

Sorry so short, in between 10m relays to baby who doesn't want to go to sleep anymore! Once asleep that's him til 7:30 ish but gets in some state before sleeping.

scarlotti · 19/05/2010 20:38

DWB yes, you can. They are about 6oz sizes and are about 70p down here. I have a couple in the cupboard for emergencies. They're a good way to test flavour wise!

OP posts:
Butterpie · 19/05/2010 20:42

Hi, a tired butterpie here!

Emmeline is growing so fast, she is such a bouncing baby now who sleeps less than her three year old sister! I'm working from home now so I really value my sleep.

Trikken · 19/05/2010 21:03

Had a fairly good day here. Ds has had an hour of school. He spent most of it clinging on to me and asking me to pick him up whilst I had Annabelle to carry round as well. At the end he seemed to get into it though so that was good.

Does anyone else's littlen really not like the fruity baby foods? Annabelle pulls a funny face with every single fruity thing I've tried her with. I don't want to get her chocolate things yet so keep trying her with different flavours but all are met with her pushing it out with her tongue and the screwing up of the eyes.

Pavlov · 19/05/2010 21:16

We use the cartons of formula milk to mix the bear cub's food up with. You can get sma, cow & gate, Aptamil, and also follow on milk/hungry baby milk in those brands I think too.

Hope everyone is good. I have managed to do swimming in the sea mon/tue but not today as the weather was awful. Not that I am only a fairweather swimmer, rather it was blowing a hooley.

The bear cub has gone a bit nuts for his food. he just seems to want/need it shovelled in quick time. He huffs if it is not being given to him quick enough and he is desperate to hold his food. He gets quite upset now if he does not have a piece of food or a loaded spoon in his hand. He is quite insistent that he feeds himself as well now although happy for me to do it too (mainly as he wants it now). He is very much like his sister. I was hoping he would just let me feed him as its easier! But, no, he is appearing to have a strong determined streak already. He seems to love everything he has tried so far. In particular he loves munching on a chunk of brocolli, seems to ease his gums? (the stem part).

Sleep is improving. Although, of course, now I have written that down it will change. So I will say no more about other than he is still co-sleeping with us.

Anyone else's babies interested in books? Bear cub tries to grab the drawings/photos/large writing in books and scratches his fingers trying to pick them up, and cannot figure out why a 'girl' in a book cannot be picked up. He looks so confused! He is very clearly trying to get the object, not just liking the sound and then he gets upset when DD turns the page, proper jazz hands upset!

weston · 19/05/2010 22:18

strange complaint of the week...sore soles of feet...like all muscles at bottom of my feet have been stretched...anyone else??

maman2tom · 20/05/2010 07:49

sirB how have you got this far with no contraception, my doc gave me a prescription when i was 7 months pregnant plus the midwives wouldn't let me leave the maternity ward till i confirmed i had the prescription Must admit i started to wonder if i have "sex maniac" written on my forehead I have cerazette the well known bf pill and have no side effects but i know lots of people get sideeffects including anxiety and depression (theres a thread on postnatal) But i thinking of a coil as i just can't manage to remember to take the pill everyday at the same time!

trikken yep dan hates fruit puree he doesn't just pull a funny face it a full blown absolute horror "what's this poison" face. He much prefers artichoke puree which is foul!

scarlotti · 20/05/2010 09:04

maman ha ha, no contraception here either - am using abstinence!!

weston are you carrying in a sling a lot? Maybe it's extra weight on your feet? Mine have grown after being pg with both ds' as they were heavy lumps!

A bad night here, probably down to hunger yesterday from not taking his milk. So today we are on a mission to make mealtimes and snack times productive. Hopefully then tonight might be more settled.

OP posts:
SirBoobAlot · 20/05/2010 10:19

Maman really?! The midwife vaguely mentioned it in a case of "Do you have condoms?" kind of way but other than that no one has mentioned it. I wondered if it was related to the sweep, as they don't do them for under 25s who give birth Have booked an appointment to see my GP for Monday to talk about it - was on the pill for two years before I fell pregnant and had kinda forgotten the hell that is my cycle.

Scarlotti no periods for 18 months sounds bloody fantastic Does it hurt, though? I only remember what I was told by a very embarrassed elderly teacher that did out SPACE classes at school - bless him... Off to google!

Pavlov Bryn is exactly the same. One of the reasons I have given up entirely with the bit of BLW we were doing. He just got too annoyed with it not coming quick enough. He is currently eating 5oz per meal, and always has milk about ten minutes after. Mini cucumbers are good for their gums as well Also got one here that screams as soon as the book is closed Doesn't mind the page turning. But you close that book and its almost as bad as bath time!!

Trikken have you tried maybe mixing it with something a bit more savoury? Like Banana and Avocado, and gradually putting in less Avocado till she is eating just banana?

Sleep is still non-existent on the main part here...

Trikken · 20/05/2010 10:43

thanks for the replies. I have tried mixing it with anything else Sirboob so will try it. haven't tried her with avocado yet either so that's another idea im gonna try.

as for contraception we're using condoms, though im much more aware now that they're not infallible. (not that it is why I got pregnant, ds was cos we we're not using anything and being naive, and Annabelle took 10 months of trying to conceive.)

Dh has his consultation with the Dr at the vasectomy clinic next Thurs so hopefully that'll happen soonish.

scarlotti · 20/05/2010 12:44

SirB it doesn't hurt, maybe a momentary bit of discomfort but they are much easier to put in after a baby as your cervix never entirely closes. I barely felt it tbh.
Best time to get one put in is just after your period, and you can get it sorted at your gp's. It's what they suggest now if you don't plan to ttc for a few years. The hormone stops the lining thickening so can also help with reducing period pains.

Both my ds' haven't had the patience for BLW or anything other than me filling the spoon as quickly as possible! They take after their Dad

We've moved on to snacks too here as milk being refused at mid morning and mid afternoon. Hopefully this will fill him up?!

hobnob57 · 20/05/2010 13:19

So, what do you do about this:?

dd1 starts squeezing her nipple after bath time and relays the story of a recent game with the kids next door. She was the mummy (3.5), youngest boy (4) was the daddy and middle boy (8) was the baby, and "middle boy was sucking my boob to get some milk because he was the baby and he was hungry". Eldest girl (11) knew better and didn't want to play.

This probably stems from me bf in the back garden at the weekend without thinking. We have open slatted fences, plus the kids were in an upstairs room next door playing with binoculars, trying to see if bluetits were going in a nesting box so were all looking out of the window.

I didn't really know what to say other than mmmmm, ummmhmmm, and perhaps that's not a great game to be playing with boys.

scarlotti · 20/05/2010 13:32

hobnob I may well get flamed for this, but I think most kids go through this at some point in one way or another. Personally I think it's just innocent curiosity. Chances are they won't think anything of it, unless that is put into their minds iyswim.
Why not go along the lines of 'it's a bit chilly so maybe baby could pretend to get the milk out over your clothes' if there's talk of playing it again - that's if she didn't have her top on anyway obviously!

I think the way you've dealt with it is great.

OP posts:
hobnob57 · 20/05/2010 13:41

I'm with you scarlotti, but when it's your own dd you want to try and put a lid on it, and letting curiosity and mimic games run their course is really hard!

Laugs · 20/05/2010 14:21

hobnob think I'd be in the 'mmmmm, ummmhmmm, and perhaps that's not a great game to be playing with boys' camp. It's a hard balance to get right isn't it, without planting any seeds. No suggestions, sorry!

Thanks to fook wook for making me feel better the other day about swearing! I do probably swear a lot under my breath too. And A LOT when I am cooking, but that means I get to shut the door and get some peace, which is fine by me!

We're having no fun at all here with teething. James is hot and grizzly and hardly sleeping. His two front teeth cut through on Saturday - any ideas how much longer until it's all over?? (Am trying to forget the 18 other teeth to come)

Pavlov Was it you who mentioned Beautiful Days. Are you going? I'm not sure whether to go. We are thinking of a summer holiday in your neck of the woods and I really like the idea of a festival, though I'm not overly into any of the bands playing there and also not sure if a festival with two little ones would just be madness... Have you been before?

Fruitpastels · 20/05/2010 15:50

Hello ladies

Hope you are all having a good week. I've felt too sleep deprived to be able to post for a couple of days. We had a better night last night and DH gave me a lie-in before he headed to work. I probably feel worse today for the bit of extra sleep! I've started working on C sleeping upstairs in his cot for the afternoon nap. Thought I would be up there ages, so I camped out on the landing with my magazine, snickers bar and a juice. I thought I'd let him cry a little bit and then go in cuddle and place back in cot and tuck him in. It took 3 attempts and he passed out. It's been 45 mins since he drifted off so I'm hoping I've cracked it (for today anyway!)

C went mad for a ripe peach today. He seems to be eating a lot more this week and it's helping DS1 eat more of his meals too (fussy eater award!!).

Raggie congrats on the job!

Any nice plans for the weekend? My DH is away on business, so have made a plan to see a friend and her kids.

Pavlov · 20/05/2010 19:57

contraception. currently on mini pill, but keep forgetting it so will be having the implant put in next week or week after. I will absolutely advise against the coil from personal recent experience after bear cub was born. It does not go wrong often, but when it does, it is horrendous. I had non-stop pain, bleeding, and swollen belly for weeks and weeks, the threads dug into my vagina and after being fobbed off for a few weeks I saw the female gp who told me it had been partially expelled and was stuck on the way out hence the extreme discomfort. It was very painful on removal. She said while I was 'technically' still protected I would have found sex very very painful and so would DH. Not an issue as I was so uncomfortable there was no sex in this house! She said there was a risk of pelvic inflammatory infection if it had stayed in much longer and was very very anti recommending it. I agree now. Why on earth would I want an archaic apendage stuck inside my womb as a method of birth control? Especially if the reason you wish to do it is to avoid hormones, as the IUS has hormones anyway. The reason it is highly recommended by GPs is it a cheap method of birth control, costs approx £100 for the contraption, and once in, stays in for 5 years. Cheaper than maternity care. As such, GPs often push it as they get funding for each one they fit. `sorry to flame it for those who have it and are happy.

So implant all the way for me. And, if you don't want a period, then it most often stops them/makes then v light. i had no period til i had it removed (2 years?)

raggie · 20/05/2010 20:51

I've just started taking mini-pill again (was using condoms til recently) - I have to take it because I got these horrible aura migraines on the regular pill. I was on Cerazette prior to being pregnant and hadn't had a period for...years actually! Some of my friends thought that was a bit weird, but I loved it! Have to say, I actually quite like using condoms in some ways. Less mess for me, more for DH instead! But they do kind of kill the mood, I agree.

We've got some little cartons of milk to try Rosa out with. I used some to mix her food tonight (broccoli, yum!) and I think I might give her some for her first night feed and cross my fingers it's the only one for a change. We've had terrible night's sleep here the last week.

I think Rosa is cutting her teeth too laugs. I didn't realise the top 2 could be first, thought it was always the bottom pair. The gnawing at everything has definitely worsened and she is quite irritable at times when there doesn't seem to be any other reason. Poor lambs! Think last night she was maybe too hot as well. Been a scorcher here today. Too sticky hot though if I'm being picky. Meant to carry on through the weekend too. I'm going for lunch to a friends with a huge garden in the countryside after swimming tomorrow. She is due on 6th June so it's all getting exciting (for me) and unbearable (for her). Maybe we'll get the paddling pool out and have a soak. Rosa will be able to sit up in it! Can't imagine being gigantically pregnant this time of year. It was bad enough last summer at the middle stages!

We love books here too! I'm sure you've seen the 'That's Not My...' series of touch and feel books? We were given TNM Penguin which is good and now I've been trying to find them all from the library. So far have seen: TNM...Dolly, Pony, Baby... Teddy?
