Hello lovely Ladies!

All this talk of weaning... I still have a good 6-7 weeks left before I start.
Naomi been really fussy and not feeding too well. Brief feeds but often. I can tell she is in need of a good long nap, but with the boys being off school she just keeps getting disturbed. Saying that this week seems to have flown by! We all have colds... DH is suffering worst of all
Have moved her up to 3-6 months clothes. She is in an eeyore outfit today, which seems to suit her mood.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 04/06/2010 18:29

Ooops - just managed to avoid near disaster in the CTFN household. Cooking marvellous supper for me and DH as kids are all out and I thought I was using a flameproof dish... turned out it was only ovenproof .

Just managed to avoid killing Percy by a few inches, although my hands are now covered in plasters.....

Newbeginning1 · 04/06/2010 22:04

Right, i'm back again. I seem to be having an unintentional MN detox thanks to my niece

flyingma - Aiden is so cute

ctofn - are you ok? All you needed was a bird coming at you and you would have gone to pot That's why i don't like cooking, it's dangerous!!

ali - how is jacob doing?

lottie - have you tried the girls with anymore meals?

crumpette - my bag is packed and i have passport in hand so can we please leave now? I'm tired and i need a nice break on a beach somewhere where i can have the odd cocktail Oooh, on the way can we swing by a plastic surgeons as well so i can get rid of my mummy tummy and thighs and ass so that i dont have to go to the beach in a jumper and trousers

sockmonkey - i hear what you're saying about the other kids disturbing the babies. Hats off to everyone else who has other children because i'm going slowly crazy that Jack's constantly getting disturbed by my niece and that our whole "routine" has been thrown upside down.

swh - i think it was you that posted about the feeding. Jack is exactly the same with the feeds but is having them more often? Have you started weaning yet? My HV told me that at 6 months my DS should only be having 4 feeds so in less than a month i need to cut loads of feeds out but i just don't think it's practical or right for Jack. I like what Lottie does though with having the break in between and then topping up again.

Sorry if ive missed anyone or anything big out, i've sat here for ages trying to write a post and my brain just doesnt seem to want to work.I'm sure some cake might sort me out

lottie thats a tough one.

I don't know what is right or wrong and do you know what, I don't think anyone does now. Im so confused too.

When I had DS I hadn't heard of BLW.
The rules were very like Switzerland. Safely and slowly, working through all the purees starting with baby rice, then pears then apples then onto root vegetables (all pureed) then onto other veg like broccolli etc. Once you had worked through all the fruit and veg (except citrus) then you'd add meat and fish. I think he was 8/9 months before we could introduce citrus fruits and other possible allergens like wheat. Dairy was only cooked into foods like cheese sauce and cows milk was not until 1 - that includes yogurt I think - don't quote me.
I have a feeling this is what your HV is going to spout at you.

This was only 2.5 years ago I weaned DS.

Now everyone is shoving BLW down my throat, and I mean really pushing their opinions on it (one particular mum is driving me mad).

I decided to ignore it but DD hates Puree and loves sucking on bits of food herself.

Im confused too. Im finding it hard to change my thinking and handing her bits of toast and citrus fruit etc is making me nervous.

I have to admit, id be scared to give her yogurt but only because I have been 'mind trained' the old way.

Who is right I have no idea and im struggling to think what to feed her and how to feed her.

Yes, DS ate more on purees and slept brilliantly.

Some days Im not even bothering to give DD any food because I don't quite know how I feel about BLW and she won't take purees.
She isnt 6 months until next week so it's not a big deal yet.

Let me know how you get on with HV and what the deal is over there.

Maybe between us we can come up with a menu for a 6 month old!!

whensmydayoff · 05/06/2010 08:35

just thinking lottie, if the girls had no adverse reaction to the yogurt and rasberries - what can possibly be the problem?

Ask her that and see what she says.

whensmydayoff · 05/06/2010 08:51

Sorry, im back

lottie there might be other possibile reasons for them not sleeping.

Which feeds (as in what time) are you replacing with formula?

I replaced the 6pm one with formula and it has had a bad effect on my milk supply.

It was the worst feed in terms of reflux, thats why I replaced with formula.

I think that would have been one of her biggest feeds. Even though I get her up at 10pm for a quick feed it's not much so im effectivly going from 2.30pm right through to 7am with only a samll feed inbetween. I can see she is frustrated now.

In saying that, since moving her cot 2/3 days ago into her own room.....

steps in and whispers so not to jinx...

She is sleeping right through the night - shhhhh keep that to yourself though .

Are they in their own room?

CantThinkofFunnyName · 05/06/2010 10:12

Lottie - don't worry about the yoghurt - my first 2 were weaned on Petit Filous from 4 months! Yoghurt is absolutely fine. Look, every country has its own set of guidelines. Like WMDO, I weaned my first 2 on purees. The advice for years and years and years has been start with baby rice so the baby gets used to the texture (not flavour) and then build that up so they are getting more substantial feed in the day and getting used to the different texture of milk. Then add root veg, fruit etc, all except citrus. I also did meat - mince, onion, carrot etc for my first two - and you can have meat - testament to all the jars with Lancashire hotpot, chicken etc that are suitable from 4 months.

However, new advice HERE is to go the BLW route. I'm willing to give it a try, like MK at around 6-7 months, but at the moment I'm sticking to purees, just because Olivia is a bit younger and I think, needed something other than milk because of her reflux. She still brings up the milk you see, but not so much the pureed food.

I think in preparation for your visit, you should arm yourself with your book about BLW and all the advice on BLW you have received and heard about from the UK health service. You do what YOU believe is best for your girls and only take what she says as ADVICE.

For example, for constipation in babies, one of the best cures is cooled boiled water with a bit of brown sugar in it. Instant cure - not an ongoing solution but clears them at that moment. However, health professionals now are not allowed to tell you that because the government guidelines say don't put sugar or salt to their food. However, most health professionals will tell you off the record that it works but they are not ALLOWED to tell you to do it.

It's all about what's "in" atm IYSWIM.

HTH and do what YOU feel comfortable with.

xx

Lottie just a very quick post (PiL here for weekend!). I BLW'd DD (4yrs). She didn't ever have baby rice/puree, mainly because I am a lazy Mummy! She was quite content with Mummy's milk and gradually dropped her feeds on her own until it was just 7am and bedtime and that stopped altogether at 9 months.

We never had any problems with her sleeping, the HV was a bit "well if thats how you want to do it..." but didn't try and make me do the "traditional" thing. DD has a far healthier enjoyment of food than some of her traditionally weaned friends and was happily joining in family meals from an early age. Lots of research has been done into it, I'll try and dig out the stuff I found then and let you have it, but it will have to wait until Monday - is that soon enough?

crumpette · 05/06/2010 11:47

Oh I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way, it's all a personal choice. Lottie pleeease don't worry about the yoghurt, cows milk shouldn't be their main drink til after 12 months but yoghurt is fine. DD adored petit filous.

DS has already surreptitiously had a couple fo raspberries too (sshhh)

It may be easier to nod and smile and say yes yes their main source of nutrition is milk and will be for a month or two but I have used the following authorities which indicate that BLW alongisde milk feeds is appropriate, but I will also give them your crazy swiss millet if you so wish, crazy mean swiss HV lady, nod nod smile, nod

and then when she's gone just do what suits you

For example, if the HV comes around I certainly won't be telling her I have given DS raspberries or I have let him have some mango sorbet or baby rice before 6 minths and nor will I tell her that we co-slept for a while and now he sleeps on his tummy. But I know he's fine and I am giving him appropriate foodstuff and it's not like I'm replacing milk with something less nutritious, but if I told her any of that she'd probably be on my doorstep every day ticking her boxes. Don't take it personally, just go along with it and then parent your lovely girls in whatever way you feel is right. You're their mummy and you're fiercely intelligent and have done a lot of research so don't feel bad.

new don't take the dropping feeds to 4 too literally. I'd advise offering the same feeds and waiting for him to need less.

and yes, lets go soon! I just got an airmiles thingy in the post, 7750 miles..I forgot all about it.. yippeee!! Not sure about plastic surgeon, just sit next to me in a bikini and comparitively you'll look fab

got to dash.. off to have a social life seeing a friend, but DS has just weeed all over himself and I haven't yet had a shower or got dressed, am so disorganised!

flyingma · 05/06/2010 12:25

newbeg I don't understand how HVs can say how many feeds a child needs a day at what age since they have all different eating patterns and appetites!

Here's a Qn. All the books talk about "6 months"... are we talking about 6 calendar months or 24 weeks?

Like Lottie, we're heading off to Ikea in a few weekends time to stock up on weaning needs - mainly the high chair. I was going to get Aidan the Funpod highchair then realised that food got all stuck down the insides so will get the funpod on its own when the time in right. So I am going back to the practical option of the Ikea chair instead.

somewhathorrified · 05/06/2010 13:50

Real quick post. LL no offence taken at all, it's great to get all perspectives on everything. As for Yoghurts, Tobin's ben having fromage frais for the last week and baby porridge everyday, turns out you're not supposed to give them oats til they're 6months , not b4 not after! every new food to be added every 7 days to avoid allergic reactions...I'm seriously thinking that the whole thing is complete guess work and slight possibility.

whensmydayoff · 05/06/2010 16:56

Sounds like everyone here just uses their common sense which is all it needs at the end of the day.

Im seriously lacking in confidence at the moment and am never quite sure what im doing so don't listen to me!!

I sat at lunch time (not knowing what Im doing) and gave Olivia the only things I thought were possible for her to eat that I had in the fridge. Avocado and strawberries (eek, citrus)! I think she must have sucked a tiny tiny bit of avocado and the strawberries kept flying out her fist. Nothing really went in again .

I just find it all a bit frustrating to watch, im too impatient!

Had a lovely day on the beach with some friends, their boy, my mum and DS&DD.
Was hot again but meant to be raining tomorrow so making the most of it.

Friends are real surfing dudes and went out padelling with the surf board and their little boy sat on it. Looked great.
Did fancy it but didn't have a change of clothes for when I inevitably fell in!

Having BBQ tonight so plan to enjoy a bit more sun and maybe a wine or two.

whensmydayoff · 05/06/2010 17:25

Well, I got a more recent photo of olivia on but with no lead to download from camera I had to scan and it's came out a tad small!

mistletoekisses · 05/06/2010 18:51

Hi All

Lots of weaning talk, v. exciting!

We are getting on well with ours. So far Nico has had pear, carrot and peach purees. Peach is a huge hit, but he is eating them all. Tomorrow he gets sweet potato for the first time. I am following the GF weaning plans. Starting with simple fruits (non citrus), moving through root veg, onto non root veg, then onto proteins eventually. How are all the BLW babies getting on? Hopefully the food is helping to fill Nico more, last night was the best nights sleep for a while. Only one nightfeed at 2am - which is progress.

The heat has been so tiring today - both boys zonked by 6.20 today! I think I may be following them shortly.

Sorry to not reply to any posts, brain is vacant. Hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine!

alibobins · 05/06/2010 20:04

Jacob is really enjoying food we are on day 4 and he has slept through since we started.
We are avoiding all dairy due to reflux and allergy and being very careful introducing things due to Ds1 history.
Today he has had apple parsnip and carrot mushed but not too smooth and then a whole pear to munch on. We are doing a bit of a mix of puree and blw but so far enjoying seeing my baby so happy.

Partyofsevensoontobeeight · 05/06/2010 20:06

hi all hope your all having a good evening, i'm feeling very nauseous but ok.

I'm doing the purees with erin until she is abit bigger not sure what the blw is all about so i'm sticking with what i know. although i'm sure theres no wrong or right way, i'm not giving her something everyday and she seems quite content to just have milk 4 x a day so i just give her some fruity porridge/baby rice pudding every third day day, once a day. i did try her with some baby rusk softened slightly but she managed to try and choke herself, vv frightening so i'll wait until shes bigger.

well BGT and then bed for me, have a good one everyone, 'speak' tomorrow.

Partyofsevensoontobeeight · 05/06/2010 20:06

xx to ali and jacob

alibobins · 05/06/2010 20:07

alibobins · 05/06/2010 20:09

party you are making me broody

whensmydayoff · 05/06/2010 22:58

Thanks ali. Olivia is 4 months there but is nearly 6 months now. Her hair all fell out bar the quiff at the front, very funny!

It's now all coming in dark blonde!

party I hated the nausea bit. Hope you have a stash of rich tea at the side of your bed. May it pass quickly! x

sssssh Olivia is still sleeping!!!

It's nearly ten past 8 in the morning. She went down at 7pm last night, took a tinse of her dreamfeed at 11, then zonked.

I'm up because I'm going out with DD1 today to a Dogs Trust thing with a couple of friends. DH is looking after Olivia and DS. Oooh, just making a coffee then getting showered.

This is MAJOR breakthrough. The first time it's happened. Not a whimper in the night!!!

sockmonkey · 06/06/2010 08:17

WMDO Sweeeeeet. She is very cute!!

I remember getting mad at my HV with DS2 over weaning. I exBF up till 6 months as per recommendations, started with baby rice - he hated it, was advised to try gluten free rusks, much better. Anyway, at 7 months she had a go because he wasn't having food with little lumps in... flippin 'eck says I, He's only just got the hang of mush!! If I'd started with mush like I did with DS1 when he was 4 months, he would have had plenty of time to get used to that first.

I agree with others on here, and just go with what you feel is best. Will probably do a bit of a mix of mush & BLW (which to me just sounds like giving them summat to chew on for a bit of a taste)

Have other babies been very grumpy in the heat? Noopy spent most of yesterday in just a nappy.

(also is my baby the only one who gets stressed out with toys? Everytime I give her something to hold she ends up crying at it)
