Just a quick post to trikken to say good luck for today and hope it goes as smoothly and quickly as possible.

Sorry, will post again later x

Toby is covered in chicken pox. Is there a point at which I should shift from 'concerned' to 'worried' about him? Is it worth ringing the doctors? He vomited last night and slept really badly but otherwise seems ok, a bit hot but not overly so. I'm a bad mum who has not got a thermometer (it is broken).

Good luck Trikken!

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 08:08

BBL If he's drinking his milk that should be a good sign that he's doing ok. This will give you a better idea on chickenpox Poor little man. He's got a fantastic mummy looking after him

scarlotti · 16/03/2010 08:16

BBL How long has Toby had spots appearing for now? It does take a good few days for all the spots to come out so that might well be why it's looking so bad. Google chicken pox and find out the exact times, but I'm sure it's something like 5 days. Is he ok in himself? If so, I'd say it probably looks worse than it is. He has such an immature immune system that he's bound to get a full on case of it, rather than a mild case sadly.
Can he take Piriton?
He may be vomiting as he might well have them inside too. My cousin had a nasty case and they were down his throat and all sorts.

Trikken good luck

Wook when you find such a job, can you get me on board too I am seeing a guy on Friday to talk about work options and what's around etc. Am hoping for a combo of office/home based work but it will depend on if there's enough work coming through. Otherwise I'll be back to full time office based

Fruit I'm not sure if I'm going to carry on with the purees at the moment. I read up a lot on BLW on the net last night and it makes a lot of sense. I've also now worked out how it might work if I go back to work, which was my biggest concern. Think I wanted to do it early so I could do it all myself iyswim, but now see that I could do new foods at home and then send tested foods to the childminder. I do like the idea of just giving him food and letting him get on with it whilst we eat our dinner.
I too am hoping to bf until around 1, although I'll have to express for daytime I suspect once my freezer drawer has been emptied.

Sigh, so many decisions with these babies and so many potential pitfalls to go wrong at!!

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 08:34

Scarlotti The book is a good starting point. Enjoy the read. The first few pages I have read are very insightful. I can't wait to pick it up again and have a flick through. Our babies will show us the way

helips · 16/03/2010 09:39

Hi all, Just got back from Switzerland and there are about 20 pages to catch up on! I'm struggling enough with catching up on all the washing so not sure if I'll manage to catch up with you guys! Anyway, apologies if I've missed any big news, hope you are all well and enjoyed mothers day. We had a brill time in Switzerland, took the kids toboggoning and went to a friends wedding which was just beautiful.

Dh's job has gone belly up and he has been offered a 2 year contract for something else in Singapore. I'm a bit nervous about the whole ex-pat thing, especially as I'll be home with the kids all day whilst dh is at work with no family or friends to fall back on. Has anyone with experience living abroad got any advice?

wook · 16/03/2010 10:16

scarlotti and fruit I tried H out with a bowl of apple and raspberry oat much mixed up with EBM yesterday. She grabbed the spoon out of my hand and took it straight into her mouth- does this mean she is ready? I don't want to rush her but I took this as a 'yes please mummy!' sign- should I have? I mean, she would put anything in her mouth if it was in reaching distance!!

TOK · 16/03/2010 10:40

Just bookmarking, lots to catch up on and should get a chance once I get rid of drop the pils off at the airport.

Good luck today Trikken

BBL if it will put your mind at rest, take him to GP, it would do no harm, although I'm sure this is normal for chicken pox. Hope he's feeling better soon, bless him. As for the thermometer, you don't necessarily need one, go with your instincts!

WIll catch up on all other news later xxx

wook · 16/03/2010 11:23

Aaah, babyledweaning have now enlightened myself! Sound good, anything that involves not having to wash the blender up five times a day is but I have to wait, hmmmm not so good.

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 11:34

Wook Wouldn't like to advise you as I'm still learning myself, but If she is showing readiness, i.e sitting well/reaching out for food you're eating, then it seems like she is ready. How old is she? If you are wanting to begin BLW, then it's all about finger food and no cutlery/purees etc. As per the book, the later you start weaning (6 months) the better for baby, as they are receiving plenty of nutrients from breast or formula, also there are possible health benefits for later in their life. If they are showing signs of hunger then it's probably best to increase their milk. They don't take much food down to begin with and get fuller quicker, so milk is still the best source of food until weaning is in full flow. There is so much I've learnt from just reading a few pages. I would recommend anyone who is feeling nervous or unsure on weaning, to read up on it and find an approach that is right for your baby.

SirBoobAlot · 16/03/2010 11:43

Trikken thinking of you today!!

OP posts:
wook · 16/03/2010 11:57

fruit thanks it all sounds very sensible.I also saw on the site i went to that when it's the second child, parents are more relaxed about things and i am sure that is true, and not always good either- nearly absentmindedly gave H one of leo's marmitey toasts this morning when she reached for it!

wook · 16/03/2010 12:00

Can you tell I am supposed to be coming up with a lesson plan for an interview on Friday? What have I done instead? MNing, FBing, Ebaying.........

wook · 16/03/2010 12:15

I don't want to work!!
I also don't want to ever be dependent on a man, any man, even my dh!
Therefore, I should have been born rich, like Samantha Cameron.
Then I could have a lovely arty farty 'hobby career', like being a jewellery designer...

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 12:18

Wook The times I have nearly given him a bite of my toast.

raggie · 16/03/2010 12:23

Oh fruit I have that giraffe too - but it was a present so I didn't know its name was Sophie! We call 'him' Jimmy Giraffe!

Hope today is going well for trikken

I have just been to visit a school wook and now need top write my application. I don't think they want part-timers but I think I'll apply (if I can find the time) as it's good practice and ask them once they've seen my hastily cobbled together amazing application, how will they be able to say no? What's the lesson your planning? Which yr group?

SirBoob you poor thing. I thought I was feeling a bit PMT-y the other day but so far materialised into nothing. I thought it would stay away util you were no longer BFing exclusively too...

Sorry to hear not everyone can make the London meet-up espeically as I think it's really down to me that it's Monday. I suppose I could do Tuesday but I don't think Misssese can and Wednesday would be a bit too long to stay with my friend. The only solution is that we will have to make it a regular occurrence!

TOK · 16/03/2010 12:28

Right, Pils shipped off home! Had a lovely weekend actually. It was Caernarfon we went to scarlotti, not Camarthon . Beautiful part of the country, all welsh speaking village. We really enjoyed it. DH had arranged for a lovely flower arrangement to be sent to the hotel we stayed at and bought me a little camera as I'd complained a few weeks back that ours didn't fit in my "going out bag" . So he does listen to my winges from time to time!

Sorry some of you didn't experience the best mother's day ever. DWB hope you have been suitably apologised and grovelled to by DP.

Laugs hope your book club goes well today, I would love something like that to go to. It would force me to get back into reading in my spare time instead of sitting doing nothing!

wook, I hope your interview goes well. I can barely remember the format of a good lesson plan these days! I'm sure it'll all come flooding back!

What's the title of the Gill Rapley book? Might give it ago. Definitely more relaxed about weaning and, well, everything, this time round. Poor neglected second child!

Must have a look into thet giraffe Fruit I don't think Anya's (or my!) hands can take much more chomping!

Right, must go wake Anya so I can get her fed in plenty of time before our baby massage taster session! Knowing my luck she's probably going to cry the whole way through it or be sick everywhere, or both!

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 12:29

LOL Raggie I think the name Jimmy suits the giraffe much better!! DS and the giraffe have become firm friends now

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 12:33

TOK Baby-led Weaning: Helping Your Baby to Love Good Food. Have a look at Amazon site as there are some good reviews you can read. They also sell the giraffe on there too.

raggie · 16/03/2010 12:35

Here's Sophie/Jimmy

raggie · 16/03/2010 12:36

Ooh la la s/he is actually French!

wook · 16/03/2010 12:45

I like her little friends too! Are they meant to be mushrooms??

Raggie 'descriptive writing' year seven or eight for approx 30 mins. and TOK I definitely can't remember the format of a lesson these days- it may have even changed since last year, who knows? I'll try to put some AfL in but is that old hat these days? Should they all be learning to learn and personalising everything? eek!
Good luck with your application Raggie

scarlotti · 16/03/2010 13:02

I've ordered the book and the giraffe!
wook like you it's the waiting bit for blw I might struggle with. More milk makes sense but we're on 2 hourly feeds already and he's just 4 months! Think I might get the highchair out of storage and gently encourage more interest in self feeding. He's desperate to sit already so am halfway there!

wook · 16/03/2010 13:32

Scarlotti wasn't Ioan a biggun? My ds was too and I am sure he should have had solids sooner than he did- surely in the case of larger babies the rule of waiting for six months is not the best advice? Or does their size make no difference?

scarlotti · 16/03/2010 13:38

wook yep, 9lb 8oz at birth and is now 16lbs 3oz at 18 weeks. I just don't know what to do now for the best! Weaning group said you could start at 17 weeks min and just see how they go. Started him then and he'll eat the whole pot (about 10 spoonfuls) and seems to like it. Went to clinic then for weighing, more out of curiosity than anything else, and HV there implied I should have waited longer. She suggested the banana test so I might go buy some later and see what he does with that.
He's sitting in his walker today (just got it back from bil) and can hold himself up quite well, no slumping or slouching.
Sigh, just wish there wasn't such conflicting advice everywhere or that the mn weaning board wasn't so militant about 6 months that I could actually get some advice without a flaming
I do like the idea of blw too so maybe I'm going to end up doing a bit of both. Steaming a few veggies then blitzing with a hand blender is no problem for me.
