Scarlotti Wook At the moment DS seems fine with milk, he is now 15lbs 10oz. My instinct tells me he's not ready yet. But every baby is different. I do think the banana test is the way forward, or if s/he reaches out and grabs something you are eating and pops it in their mouth and chews, then they are ready!! I mentioned BLW to a HV last week and she didn't seem at all keen on the idea She was whispering to me as if it was a taboo subject! For me, it's seems the most logical method. I need to learn not to mention certain things to HV's and go with my own instinct, albeit spoon or self feed!

tigger32 · 16/03/2010 15:10

Hello am I allowed back in??

Sorry I've not been around for so long, just getting through the day some days is an achievement!

scarlotti fruit wook I've been wondering about weaning too, Hen is my 3rd baby so really I should know what I'm doing, but with ds1 we were told we could wean from 4 months (which is now for Hen) with ds2 he was such a little scrap that he was fine to wait until 6 months.
Hen however is quite a big boy, I'm feeding him every 2 hours in the day and we've just managed to drop from 6 to 3 feeds a night!I'm trying to wait until 5 months.
I'm thinking I might do a mixture of puree and baby led
fruit I think you are right, we have to do it our way and be led by our babies.

The meet up sounds fab but I'm too scared to go to London on my own I hope you all have a great time.

I'm loving the look of Sophie giraffe, I did see her in kiddicare a while ago and wondered about buying her....

Have worked out sirboobalot but am struggling with dontworrybaby any hints??

scarlotti · 16/03/2010 15:37

I suppose we should congratulate oursevles on caring enough to get ourselves into a tizz about weaning. After all, if we didn't give a stuff we'd have been feeding them chocolate buttons by now - at least that's how I'm consoling myself about my dithering at the moment, as it's so unlike me!

tigger good to see you back. DWB is Claired - a discussion on how you chose your name prompted a few changes, and then we vetoed any more so we would still know who everyone was!! Huge congrats to you managing to survive 6 feeds a night

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 15:51

Welcome back Tigger

I'm feeling rather nervous this week. We find out what school DS1 will be attending. Friday is the big day. This is new territory and I'm not liking it one bit

SirBoob forgot to say, sorry your periods have come back already. I've almost forgot that they DO come back!

DH away again this week It's been a crazy couple of months with he's work load. I'm hoping it will calm down soon.

Off to read BLW book whilst baby is sleeping..

BeckyBendyLegs · 16/03/2010 16:23

Hi everyone, Toby is totally covered but I'm sure looks worse than he feels as generally he's reasonably content. Poor little mite though. I rang the Drs and they weren't too worried. So I've got some camomile lotion with aquas in it but can't give piraton until 1 year I think, I'll check the bottle.

We went to a chicken pox party this morning, five of the six children were spotty (the other two were siblings who hadn't caught it yet). It was so bizarre seeing these spotty children playing together.

Fruit good luck with the school results. It's a mad world. I hope you get the school you want for your DS. It was easier when I was little, you just went to the nearest one!

BeckyBendyLegs · 16/03/2010 16:24

I can't add up, five of the seven children not six! DS1 would be horrified at my bad maths!

lemontop · 16/03/2010 17:09

Good old Sophie the giraffe! Everyone I know seems to have one. I copied some friends from my baby group and got one off ebay. Isaac loves it.

I've just stocked up on stuff for BLW. Tried Isaac with green beans and carrot sticks earlier but he couldn't quite get a grip on them. Actually went to sit outside in the cafe in the park for an ice cream today which was lovely!

Laugs · 16/03/2010 17:13

I'm glad Toby doesn't seem too unwell Becky. I suppose just imagine if he didn't have the spots, whether you'd be concerned.

I'm back from my book group. It was a success, I think! Quite a few people came so I can breathe again. I was so terrified of nobody turning up.

I hope work's gone well Trikken.

Nice to see you again Tigger! I'm not going to the London meet-up, but perhaps you could meet someone to go in on the tube/ bus with, if you wanted to go?

Will have to get a Jimmy Giraffe for baby James.

lemontop · 16/03/2010 18:00

Aw Becky just seen your facebook pic of Toby's spots the poor little fella. I wonder if he knows what's going on. Hope he's not too poorly.

tigger32 · 16/03/2010 18:32

Thanks for welcome back.

Becky, poor Toby, hope he feels better soon

laugs glad your book group went well

Lemon how lovely, an ice cream in the park!

scarlotti thanks for name help!

weston · 16/03/2010 18:34

i am such a marketeers dream...one sophie giraffe winging its way to south staffs...

chicken pox is my idea of hell BBL at mo, having to be confined with DD2 in her current behaviour, hope u are surviving ok and at least you will have it all out of the way so that everytime a spot appears u are not wondering 'is this it'!

DD2 whacked a kid over head with toy at playbarn then took her pants and trousers off and ran off naked....shes such a joy...

Cadders1 · 16/03/2010 18:56

Hi everyone! Must remember to log on every day otherwise I am going to miss a lot!

wook I am near Royston in a very small village. I am assuming you are a teacher, me too! Can I help with the lesson plan at all? Good luck on Friday.

BeckyBendyLegs · 16/03/2010 19:04

Hi all, Laugs I would love to be in a bookgroup again! I don't know any avid readers around here, at least not as much as me (DS1 counted we have 1,081 books in the house).

Chicken pox is officially hell now! Toby is just not happy, and who can blame him. He's hot too so have dosed him with calpol but last night he threw it back up at me so hopefully it will stay down tonight.

Weston poor you with your DD's behaviour. Is she trying to get your attention away from the baby?

DS1 is at Beavers, DS2 is 'doing work' on a laptop and DS3 is asleep. The house is quiet.

PavlovtheCat · 16/03/2010 19:07

tigger hey! Good to hear from you again

cadders welcome

trikken hope your day has gone ok and you did not pine too much.

BBL hope your Toby is ok, poor little thing. I am on the lookout for DD as there is about of it going around her nursery.

weston I am sorry you are having such a hard time with your DD2. My DD is a pain sometimes. She has not taken to hitting others but she will quite happily hit us, or she will throw herself on the floor in the middle of a supermarket and shout 'AWWWW YOU PUSHED ME! YOU PUSHED ME ON THE FLOOOOOR!' which is a leetle embarrassing! Remember 'it will pass it will pass it will pass'

I have been to the uni open day for postgraduate study. {sad]. There is only one scholarship, if they indeed even have one to offer. Positive is the lecturere was very very keen for me to get on board, she said they really want people like me, and gave me pointers for applying for the scholarship successfully, but its a tough call and I am not hopeful really. It involves some luck and I appear not to have much of that (unless it involves children, then I am an A student!). I shall apply anyway and see what happens.

Sorry if I have missed anything, I will re-post later if I have missed anything out.

SirBoobAlot · 16/03/2010 19:41

Pavlov my mum plonked me in the freezer at Asda once when I kept complaining I was hot... Your story reminded me for some reason!!

Weston I hope you DD eases up on you a little soon.

Thanks for the sympathy re periods. sulks They're not as heavy as normal, so I seem to be getting a semi-period I don't want to go back on the pill seeing as I'm already putting Prozac into DS but if they come back full swing I'm going to have to, as they're agony and very heavy. Sorry TMI

Well we started on food today. Huge success I figured I'd just try it - if he was interested he could have it, if not we'd leave it. But he's back to feeding every hour-two hours again and I just couldn't handle it. Mentioned it to the HV yesterday and she said to give it a shot. He chuckled all the way through it, and would have quite happily munched the whole oz pot (as it was I let him have half of it as he looked so disgusted when I tried to take it away ). It went EVERYWHERE and I loved it! Thing is, he's ready for it, so... shrugs

The friend of mine who I've mentioned before, the pregnant one... She's currently up at the hospital. Went in last night after have such severe pains she was crying. Now, she's not good with pain, so we all kinda reckoned she was making a bit of a fuss to begin with. But they have ruled out a water infection etc, and struggled to find a heartbeat earlier. When they did it was very weak Not good for 20 weeks. She also hasn't felt any movements at all. Her mum has always had very good pregnancies, so don't think she was very concerned. But Mum and I kinda shared a look when she said this. Mum MC at 8 (twice), 12, 14 and 17 weeks, and obviously with my sister as well she's not the most optimistic when it comes to pregnancy. They haven't rushed to do a scan either, and that seems even more ominous to us But we could be wrong. I hope we are. For all her faults (and for her driving me up the wall) I do care about her, and would hate for her to go through that.

Sorry Mini rant. Hope you're all okay. x

Fruitpastels · 16/03/2010 20:27

SirBoob Your poor friend Hope tomorrow brings some good news for her.

BBL Poor Toby. I'm sure he'll start getting over the worst of it now. Hope he sleeps for you tonight.

I should be on commission for Sophie giraffe

Laugs · 16/03/2010 20:28

SirB Your poor friend, I hope she is ok. Are they keeping her in for tests or just to see how she goes? I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm glad you're enjoying weaning. I loved it with DD and am looking forward to it again.

BBL you should start up your own. I'm sure you'd meet lots of likeminded people. It was really nice to sit and have a coffee and chat about books while bouncing our babies on our laps. To set it up, I contacted the regional literature agency with the idea and they agreed to fund a facilitator, so I didn't have to do the hard bit myself!

Pavlov Have you looked into funding from external sources?

scarlotti · 16/03/2010 20:48

SirBoob how exciting about the weaning! What did you give him? Sorry to hear about your friend.

BBL hang on in there and the pox will be gone soon.

Pav here's hoping this is your lucky break.

Ninjacat · 16/03/2010 21:37

I'm a bit at the moment so hiding away a bit.

Scarlotti just wanted to say my HV said I would have a very hard time waiting for 6mnths to wean such a big baby. Every one seems to have different advice.

scarlotti · 16/03/2010 21:48

Ninja why so ? Can we help?
Thanks for info on what your HV said - I would tend to agree, just wish I could have the courage of my convictions and get on with it rather than doubting myself all the time!

wook · 16/03/2010 22:05

SirBoob very for your friend, fingers crossed. Those pics of Bryn are .

pav I hope this is a case of 'where there's a will there's a way' for you.

BBL ds1 has not had chicken pox yet so I am very scared of it coming now, as he's older but also want it over with before he gets even older still. Poor Toby on top of the exczema (sp???) too. And poor you! You are definitely being tried with one thing then another. Must mean something very good is in the pipeline!

cadders it's descriptive writing year 7 or 8 mixed ability, for 25 -30 mins. Not time to do an awful lot so I think I'm just going to stick to one or two things. Any advice gratefully received! The main problem is just that I haven't taught or even thought about teaching since last July and let's face it, I probably wasn't teaching my socks off in July at 6 months pregnant hopefully it's like riding a bike! Are you primary or secondary?

Scarlotti Fruit Ninja the advice is so conflicting it's crazy, so I am just going to bumle on and keep offering little bits and bobs of first tastes at supper, with Hedy perched in her Bumbo on top of the dining table. Tonight was a broccoli (sp?) spear, which she grabbed at, took to her mouth, then dropped in utter disgust!

Ninja very sorry to hear you feel Hope it is temporary. By the way, I meant to say I thought the link you posted the other day was really really useful: I grew up in a house full of domestic violence and also a lot of verbal/emotional abuse until my mum took us to live at Grandma and Grandpa's when I was ten. I think now that the physical stuff was almost the least of the problem- what has stayed vividly with me are the way words were used, the emotional manipulation and the living in fear of never knowing which way someone might turn. Those questions were very good questions for anyone in a relationship to think about.

Off for OBEM on ch4 plus 1 now, hope it was a goodun!

wook · 16/03/2010 22:06

Bumle???? I meant bumble

wook · 16/03/2010 22:08

Laugs that sounds so fab, I bet all the women are v grateful to you for organising such a nice thing for them all to do- something for mums' development as opposed to something for the babies all the time!

PavlovtheCat · 16/03/2010 22:10

ninja you ok? if you don't want the www to hear, come and talk on fb...

laugs re external funding, i am going to look at that this week. I will find someone to pay for it. Shame my employer is so strapped for cash, would ask them! I might be able to wrangle a couple of days a year study leave but that is all. I will find a way. DH said he could ask his mother, he said she considers me a daughter and he thinks she would pay for it if it meant i became a 'dr' (reputation and all, she loves that kind of thing). But I have said to him, absolutely not. I want to do this myself, under my own steam, for me. I don't want anyone to pay for it, unless it is a scholarship awarded on my potential, or an organisation/charity willing to fund me, or in the future i find a way to fund it myself. DH said if it meant not being able to do it, that was stubborn and I would lose out. But i have my pride. Am I being silly? Quite probably.

Reuben has a bug. Without a doubt. I wonder if he has had it all this time and I have blamed allergies. Can a baby have a virus for almost 3 months? He has produced mucousy vomit, which seems to be helping actually. He is sleeping more calmly, even though he wakes more than i would like! He has smelly breath, runny poo, runny nose, mucous in his vomit and a swollen gland behind his ear. He is so wonderfully happy, i wonder what he will be like without this bug! I am sort of releived it is a bug, as it means it will pass, and it is not an allergy to, say, our cats!!! (which I was worried about). he threw up over a friend this evening after he span him around doing 'aeroplanes' to fast all over his woolly jumper!!!

SirBoobAlot · 16/03/2010 22:21

Ninja sending you a big hug. If you want to talk we're all here, and on facebook. x
