weston · 28/03/2010 22:04

anyones else's DD/DS refusing to go to anyone bar mum or dad?? Grandparents came around today, last week she was smiles for anyone now its bottom lip out and saddest cry u have ever heard! is it a phase?? how long does it last?! packing for manic week with packed house in ireland on thursday..

keep any eye on mothercare Fruitpastels as its supposed to be £50 but they tend to sell it at £25 alot

ursigurke - have a fab time in austria, eat lots of chocolate..or is that switzerland?!

anyone watch 'house of tiny tearaways'? missed it first time around but on some random channel called 'really', i am soo in love with tanya bryon and completely addicted to it and think it has even helped me deal with DD1 better, though not sure if its that or just DD2 sleeping..

can't believe its nearly easter already

right time for bed..thought is it 10 or 9..

hobnob57 · 28/03/2010 22:11

Isla rolled today . I suspect it was to get off her tummy because it was so full of wind . Both directions. Twice. But not when we got the video camera.

We had a lovely night last night with a full evening's sleep from her. I gave her a dream feed at 11 but it set her guts moving again and so she woke when I put her down. I burped her and put her down again as she was still really tired. She gave us 30 mins of chat which was hilarious before she farted and finally drifted off again until 5:40 which seems to be her wake up time. Fed, slept until 7, fed, slept until 9, fed and up. Lovely.

Nightmare day today though with full-on reflux and chronic wind. Either she rasperried out too much of her medicine last night or the butcher puts milk in his gluten-free sausages

hobnob57 · 28/03/2010 22:27

Just to add, in case of paranoia about lack of rolling, I was leafing through DD1's baby book today and she was immobile until 6 months! But an utter yap instead. Come to think of it, she was really late to walk and is still a bit clumsy on her feet. I'm taking her to the doc tomorrow after a shoe shop lady suggested she needs instep insoles for flat arches about this time last year

I'm organised, me.

SirBoobAlot · 28/03/2010 22:46

Oh thank goodness, am so glad to hear that other babies are not their best at the moment, was getting worried about Bryn! (But am also sorry to hear its not just him iyswim.) He's being a right little PITA at the moment, though I am more upset than frustrated, as he seems so uncomfortable and unhappy Constant painful wind, waking frequently at night, very white gums, unsettled during the day... Poor lamb.

Ursi it took Bryn a few weeks to get used to the dummy, and now he uses it both to settle him at night, and as a soother for his poor gums (I put some in a pot and then in the fridge after they've been cleaned). Boots have a sale on their packs of Tommee Tippee ones at the moment, by the way! If you're using gripe water for wind, try putting a bit of that on the dummy - because its sweet sometimes it tempts them to take it more willingly.

Pavlov don't you think children should come programmed with the ability to notice the clocks changing, and sleep accordingly? Was not impressed when I was woken up by a chuckling baby pulling my hair this morning at 5am ready to start the day!

Scarlotti I think you're quite right, that's exactly what he does. He has been slightly better today as I've been letting him suckle on my finger until he's calm enough to exchange to boob without him chocking because he's crying. Nap wise.. He's just a nightmare to get to sleep during the day! I might give your suggestion a try this week, thanks

Hobnob so Isla!! I got a fantastic picture of Bryn mid-roll last weekend, its on facebook, you can see his flab grin very clearly

Hope you're all well. My Dad is away for the week so will be Bryn, mum, brother and I in the house - fab.

Ursi we bought a camcorder when ds was born, a sony handycam. It is ok ish, the disc goes in the side but if I was buying one tomorrow I would get one of those tiny ones with a usb. It is amazing to watch old films we made of ds, I'm so glad we bought it.
Have a lovely time in Austria!

babyledweaning the health visitor gave me this book the other day to read, now I am more confused than ever! I think I'll just keep muddling through, e.g. giving H a bit of avocado or cooked carrot to play wiuth while we are eating, and then just go for it like mad with the marmite on toast and yoghurt etc at six months, unless sleep gets worse and worse. It is such a minefield of conflicting advice, drives me potty!

So accident prone at the moment, I flung a load of soil in my eye yesterday at the allotment and had to go up to a and e tonight as the whole eye region swelled up like a balloon. scratched my cornea, ooowww!
H just sleeps up there happily in her pram while we dig and clear but I am sure that won't last for long!

scarlotti · 29/03/2010 07:57

Morning all

Feel like I've been hit by a bus today Ioan had such an unsettled night so am shattered. Funnily enough I was thinking the other day, I remembered that with DS1 it got much harder around the 4 month mark when teeth started to move etc. I remember wondering where my lovely smiley baby had gone! Guess it's tough for them too as they're developmentally growing at such a rate, rolling, chatting, sitting - down side of which makes them more hungry and us more tired.
Sigh. Who's great idea was it to have another baby ...?!
I quite like the clocks changing, mainly because both boys seem sensitive to the light and DS1 has been waking at 5:30 recently the last two nights have bought an extra hour from him, not that Ioan has let me sleep through it but hopefully it's just a matter of time!!
I might try and get a cheeky nap in soon when Ioan drops off, and just pray it't not setting a new sleep pattern!!

ursi my brother got a flikr video camera for xmas and it's brilliant. Takes short films and then you USB them to the pc. They're encrypted really small so they're much easier to send to friends and family, perfect for families living far away. We have a sony one with digital tapes, it's great but I have yet to copy the tapes onto the pc

Re dummies, we use the Mamm ones and the newborn ones have a dull surface so they don't slip out which can help teach them how to keep them in

Going to the osteopath today - have been having tests for my sore hips but I think I've found the problem... have been carrying Ioan in his car seat over the crook of my elbow balanced on my hip. Last week or so I've left the seat in the car and the pain is reducing. Hoping a good work over from her today will get rid of my aches and pains!!

Hoping all the babies are more settled today

DontWorryBaby · 29/03/2010 09:05

scarlotti That could well be the cause of your hip problems! I can't really manage Ethan in his car seat, we live in a 2nd floor flat so it's extremely hard work! Unless his daddy's around, I try my best to lift him out of the seat at all times. They're so awkward.

Sorry haven't been on much recently, been arranging Ethan's Christening for May and our Wedding for October, both of which are apparently very short notice! Hopefully ordering my dress this week and booking venue the following week so after that everything should come together.

What has everyone done for old, new, borrowed & blue? Blue garter is probably the easiest thing but my bridesmaids will be wearing blue so I could always incorporate that into my tiara. Not sure about old or borrowed though!

TOK · 29/03/2010 09:39

Morning ladies, I have been lurking but just don't have time to post these days!

We moved Anya into her cot last night, but still in our room. We are going to wait until she is sleeping through before she goes in with ds which will hopefully be around the 6 month mark. She slept better than she ever has last night. Went down at 7.30, woke at 2.30 for a feed then slept again until 7.30! Couldn't believe it. Long may it last!

DWB I have just been racking my brain about what I had for my old and I can't for the life of me remember!

ursi have a fab time and take advantage of having the extra pairs of hands to catch up on sleep!

wook ouch at your eye!! You must be looking forward to the Christening at home!

hobnob good to hear that not all babies roll at 3/4months, was starting to worry about Anya! She is trying really hard but only manages to roll onto her side!

Loved the article Ninja

scarlotti · 29/03/2010 11:01

Ioan is barely moving onto one side so don't worry about babies not rolling!! He's been chatting away though for a good month or more so he's just focussing on different skills first I think - talking being the main skill in this family!!
DS1 didn't do his gross motor skills early either, but could pick up a speck of fluff from a very early age, and spot them across the room (as you can tell my housework skills aren't all that either! )

We've been back to bed and had a 1.5 hour nap!!! Feel so much better but obviously I'm now worrying that I'm setting a new trend

TOK think I'll do the same with Ioan re going in with DS1 and cots etc. I'll be interested to see how she does in her new bed!

weston · 29/03/2010 11:24

i found with both kids that once they moved into their own room they slept much better! moved DD1 out after 2 weeks..noisy sleeper and DD2 at 3 months; not sure if u inadvertently wake each other up when in same room!

Ninjacat · 29/03/2010 11:37

Pav sorry I accidentaly included you in a message on fb (you have same first name as friend). Please ignore any mad rambalings

skorpion · 29/03/2010 14:18

fruit Lucy has this - not really proper lullabys, but the harp music is lovely and plays for about 20 mins

wind I found the following massage: 1 massage the tummy from ribs to the nappy one hand after another, paddle-style, for a count to 15; 2 bring the kees up to tummy for 15 secs; 3 massage the tummy in a clockwise motion for a count to 15; 4 do the thing with the knees up again. Repeat three times a day. Only started yesterday, but keeping my fingers crossed. Lucy also seems to have it bad first thing in the morning and before bed.

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2010 14:20

dontowrrybaby a question but one you will know as our babies are a day apart. Are our babies 17 weeks or 18 weeks? I thought 17, but looked on the calender and it seems 18, but i might be miscounting . Oh dear what a bad mother!

DontWorryBaby · 29/03/2010 14:22

Pav 17 I'm sure. Hang on I'll go count...

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2010 14:22

no DWB i am miscounting, I was right wasn't I? 17wks is right. Are you thinking of weaning yet? I know that technically we are 'allowed' to start now, but he does not seem ready, he does not feel old enough! We are going to wait until he is nearer 20wks I think.

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2010 14:23

right i am off out....catch you in a bit

DontWorryBaby · 29/03/2010 14:24

Yes, definitey 17 weeks! I struggle to keep track of the weeks as well. Now going with '4 months' whenever anyone asks!

What does Reuben weigh? Are you thinking about weaning anytime soon?

raggie · 29/03/2010 14:31

wook OUCH! at a scratched cornea. Roo loves hanging out with her daddy in the garden and granpa at the allotment too. She sticks out her tongue when it's windy or rainy. So sweet. So far I have steered clear and now I have another excuse - might get mud in my eye!

Rosa has been sleeping v well since she's mmoved into her own room, well apart from a wee blip. She's doing really well now.

Here's the muffins recipe for you scarlotti and anyone interested. They are apple and sultana so you can even pretend they're healthy!

pinch nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
150g caster sugar

Combine and mix gently.

Cool for 10mins in tin then turn out.
EAT!!!

DontWorryBaby · 29/03/2010 14:32

Great minds, eh?

I'm having Ethan weighed on Wednesday, haven't had him weighed in around 3 weeks so not sure where he is at the moment. I suspect if I was just going on weight I could start now. He can hold his head up well, haven't tried the tongue reflex test, is only showing interest in our food over the past couple of days but isnt yet at the stage where he could pick something up and bring it to his own mouth. I'd like to try Baby Led Weaning, possibly combined with some spoon fed meals (eg breakfast... how do you manage finger foods for breakfast?) but I'm still waiting on amazon delivering that book so haven't worked out a plan of attack yet!

We've decided to pay for our October wedding upfront, facilitated by me returning to work full time from the second week in July. If we're not coping, I can ask to cut to a 3 day week but would like to try to work full time until my next lot of maternity leave, which will hopefully be some time in 2011! I'm guessing the return to work decision will be harder with 2, childcare more expensive, homelife busier etc, so the aim is to put us in the best financial situation possible for baby no 2's arrival.

Anyway, the timescales are going to be tight as I would like to continue to bf. I really don't fancy expressing in work (is anyone doing this?) but my office is 10m drive so DP & Ethan could meet me for lunch and a feed every day if need be.

So, to summarise, I think I'd like to start weaning by mid May at the latest!

raggie · 29/03/2010 14:34

Also..

Well done Mr pavlov!

Claire exciting news about the wedding and christening. Cant believe people think Oct is short notice - it's not even wedding 'season', they should be privileged to be invited! Oh and how about borrowing some earrings, which could also be old - e.g. from your mum/grandma?

DontWorryBaby · 29/03/2010 14:41

raggie it's not 'people' (or not yet at least) it's dressmakers and venues!! First couple of dress shops I went to asked when the wedding would be. When I answered October they were waiting on the year so I quickly learned to say October this year and enjoy their reactions!

It'll probably be Fri the 15th Oct which is about 6 and a half months away so hopefully the dresses will be ready in good time.

Your post has made me think about getting Ethan moved into his own room. His arms stick out the side of his cradle so maybe this weekend we'll move him in. It's the start of DP's easter holidays this weekend so he can help with any settling in issues we might have. Just need to buy black out curtains as the blinds aren't great. I am so disorganised... I dread to think how I'll cope with wedding preparations, full-time work and a baby to look after!!

DontWorryBaby · 29/03/2010 14:43

PS good idea about the jewellery... good excuse to raid my mum's jewellery box!

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2010 15:34

DBW have no idea what he weighs, does that have a bearing on weaning? Did not know that! He has not been weighed for about 4 weeks, so due tomorrow, which is going to coincide with his jabs, unless it has been 5 weeks which it might have, and his jabs were due last week! But if that was the case, we would have had a bollocking letter from the Drs surgery to tell us!

I want to do BLW, we did it with DD, She told us she was ready to eat, as she grabbed a piece of toast and marmite that a friend's little boy was eating and ate it! (or rather, gummed it!) We started with puree at about 5 months (she loved pureed peas, although the green stains!) and moved onto a combination of both. It was great. For breakfast we did scrambled egg, or some fruit, or toast (sucks on it no no risk of choking if it is a big bit). Also did not really pay too much attention to it being 'breakfast' food, gave her what we thought she would like. I think, but can't remember, that she would have like a bit of puree/yoghurt that kind of thing, along with a couple of pieces of whole cooked apple or carrot, or a bit of banana, then lunch/tea would be similar but with carrot/sweet potato pieces, and also some puree. I do remember, when she was a bit older (about 8-9months?) giving her a large chunk of pork chop (you know those boneless chops?) for her to chomp on! It was great as she sucked and chewed, got all the juice and flavour from it and no risk of choking as it was enormous! Reuben is starting to show an interest now, he looks at our food, he can hold his head up, we are borrowing a bumbo from a friend to start weaning in for when we do start. I am just a bit less keen to get him doing it all so quickly, I guess, i don't want him to grow up so fast! I feel there really is no rush this time, he is happy with milk, he loves his milk and being breastfed, so I am happy to keep this going for a while. BUT, I am also excited about weaning, as it is so much fun!

raggie i love that you call your little girl Roo! Reuben is Roo too, and Roobear. My friend has this annoying habit of calling him Rude Boy, and keeps singing that new Rude Boy song by Cant Remember Her Name . I shan't tell him we don't like it though, he will only do it for longer!

We don't want Reuben in his own room yet, so we are planning on his cot going up this week in our bedroom, but i am suspecting that he will probably go into his own room sooner rather than later. DD decided at 8-9 months to go into her own room and we think she might have slept better earlier if we had done it earlier. But I really like waking up with him next to me .

I am in fact, feeling rather tearful about him moving, and about him weaning, and about lots of things! DD starting school in September. I was a bit tearful in the night and started planning all the lovely things we are going to do between now and then as I am on ML, as we won't be able to do things together in the week any more . I want to keep them as my little babies, bad sleeping or not!

PavlovtheCat · 29/03/2010 15:38

blimey that was all a bit long wasn't it .

Oh meant to say raggie and others, thanks for continued support re DH being a 'non-smoker' YEY! he has his last cigarette on sat night, had two puffs and put it out, did not enjoy it. No cigarette since. Not even tempted. He is finding it hard, but not tempted. He keeps saying 'i am not a smoker any more, so smoking a cigarette is not an option'. He just does not like feeling the way he is atm (agitated mostly, and very absent minded, reminds me a bit of how I was when pg!) So we went out for a walk, and he is now cooking chicken pie for dinner to keep his mind of the feeling. He knows it will pass soon.
