Rolf - are you sure the policeman wasn't the tiger who came to tea - that's Ethan's book of the day!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 17/03/2010 13:08

Hope Thea sleeps for you soon Rolf! Sorry that you still seem to have a house full of poorly DCs.

neenz · 17/03/2010 16:25

I am so shocked I haven't been on since Saturday.

Spider, fab news, congratulations! It is such a worrying time isn't it, coupled with sickness and exhaustion, not good, but very exciting. I went through lots of anxious moments up until the 12wk scan so I sympathise on that score.

Poppy, sorry about your cowbag colleague, I remember after my mc I used to get so angry when people I didn't like got pg and got to 12wks ok . It just didn't seem fair . Good luck with the duct removal, hope it goes well.

Puree, that is so sweet that she knocks on the door to come out! I am going to put the twins in proper beds around their birthday (only 7wks away!) We are having a birthday party at our house - I made a list and there are 50 adults and over 40 kids . Hope it doesn't rain or we might have to change venue (church parish hall will probably be available).

Rolf, that's hilarious about your DD saying she's Mr Smith. She is such a character.

My parents were staying with us Sun and Mon which was lovely. They have now gone to Aus and NZ for 8wks, they are having a new kitchen fitted while they are away and ripped the old one out on Saturday, which is why they came to stay with us. It was so nice for them to spend so much time with the DTs and they are getting to know them much better now.

We are on holiday next week, only to Bakewell in Derbyshire, a cottage for 4nts. Really looking forward to it.

PenguinNZ · 18/03/2010 08:56

I know exactly what you mean Deb. Obv everyone speaks English here (well, of a sort...) but because it's a small village everyone has grow up together and know each other so well. I think Neenz mentioned smthing similar when she moved. Anyway, it sucks! I like the sound of online skype coffee morning, altho I may need to get up in the middle of the night for it!!!

Poppy - Gd luck with the op!

I forgot to say re: books, I highly recommend Oliver Jeffers, his books are lovely. They made one of them into a beautiful film, Lost and Found, that can currently be found on Amazon for less than four pounds - everyone should get one! (Except me as Amazon don't deliver to NZ ).

It's bloody freezing here. The outside temperature is about 9 degrees, but OMG the indoor temperature is the same or less!!! I miss central heating so much, seriously it may end up being a deal breaker for whether or not we stay. I hate being cold. We can't have a fire until DH has cleaned the chimney - did I mention that DH has re-trained as a chimney sweep out here? Ironic he hasn't had time to do ours eh?

Amberc · 18/03/2010 13:24

I haven't got time to do a proper post but will later but just wanted to say how funny the Mr Smith comment was - I cracked up!!!

Amberc · 18/03/2010 15:54

I would love to come to Wisley - it looks amazing but it's too difficult for me to get to as a non driver I'm afraid. Essie do come to Beckenham/Bromley.

Door handles - Luke is perfctly capable of opening doors by the handles I'm afraid so no door is safe unless it has a lock on it. Luke would not stay in a big bed for 5 minutes until I can properly reason with him. I am very impressed with the big beds and duvets. Sometimes when I go in to check on Luke he has turned 180 degrees. I wonder if a duvet wouold stop him doing it or if he would just end up freezng cold!

Poppy I'm sure you are with me on the fact that strangely now that i am having problems, everyone seems to be pregnant. Everywhere I look - very strange. There's neenz and Spider on this thread and on my assisted conceptin thread someone's juat got a BFP too! I bought some more ovulation test sticks cos I am going to keep trying and hope for a miracle. I have been very good this week and done loads of exercise and taken my Zita West tablets. I've even binned all the tea bags and coff and replaced them with deceffinated so can't do any more! Mark's grandmother God bless her told me that I should be on a diet because I look at least 6 months pregnant. hmmm

Deb - I hope someone buys your place soon and you can come home to the UK. Might even see you at a meetup!

PiggyPenguin · 18/03/2010 17:59

J has sickness and diarrhea, so posting and run ning, sorry.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 18/03/2010 18:34

I was really worried about S getting cold Amber but he's been ok so far - even on the mornings we've found him on top of the duvet. We do put socks on him at bedtime though just in case!

Thankfully our door handles are quite high so don't have to worry about doors too much (as long as small stools are out of harms way!!!).

SpiderWilliam · 18/03/2010 19:07

Deb I am sorry that our conversation made you feel lonely. You can always ring, but I realise that a chat on the phone is different to relaxing over a coffee face to face.

Puree and Amber Wisley is J10 on the M25, so I completely understand why it isn't at all convenient from Bromley (esp as a non driver Amber). Similarly, I would think twice about driving round to your bit of the M25 and then driving "into" London on unknown roads (urghh).

BookLovers on your recommendation I bought P "Hairy McClarey" and "the Gruffalo" yesterday. He seems quite pleased with both of them. More importantly, I am enjoying having something new and slightly more complex to read.

I have been feeling quite bleugh for the last couple of days, and tired. I am considering retreating to the ILs for a bit the week after next. DH is complaining that he would be lonely (for 3 nights), but really I think he could cope especially as he went out drinking last night and got in at 12.45am. However, it would clash with the Wisley plan. Sponge has gone AWOL for a bit , so I had better text her and warn her that this is a possibility in case she isn't lurking.

EssieAmma · 18/03/2010 20:09

Where are your inlaws, Spider? Anywhere near where Sponge lives? I might have to go to Sponge's town next week if I don't manage to stop on the way down.

And I will probably visit Bromley/Beckenham. DH has announced that he might have a 2 day trial which means an overnight stay, the week before Easter. I come to London, he goes... although I have plenty to say on that topic...

Penguin has he really retrained as a sweep? You're not joking? That's dead cool. And guess what, I need a sweep. But here, which is a bit far to come.
Any consolation that it's 9 deg here too?
How do you get a degree symbol on your keyboard? I've always wanted to know.

Sybil is it wrong of me to laugh at 'posting and running' given the situation chez Vimes?

EssieAmma · 18/03/2010 20:11

Can I just share an amusing story (nobody else to share it with... ). My brother, who is 30 and doesn't look like a teenager, has just been id'd. Buying...screenwash for the car.

Rolf · 18/03/2010 21:05

lol at your brother Essie. I got asked a week before my wedding if the glass I was buying was for a school project!

Sybil hope J is better soon. I had DS2 at home today, and DD1 was at school but is still suffering in the evenings. DS1 looks really peaky, so T is the only one still standing. I bet she'll get chicken pox. What does anyone reckon on whether my magical breast milk will protect her from the pox?

ktpie · 18/03/2010 21:07

Here you go Essie, how to do a °, I knew that bit of knowledge would come in handy one day!
How funny about your brother being ID'd.

J can do door handles as well, so we turned the sitting room door handle upside down, he would still be able to do it if he was a bit taller but it keeps him contained for now.

Amber - J moves around a lot in his cot, he likes to lie across the end but since he got a duvet he is usually still underneath it when I go to check on him, plus it's easy to tuck him back in. Tonight he was trying to tuck his giraffe in under it as well.

The health visitor came the other day for H's 6 week check and did the 12 month check on J at the same time, only 8 months late. He was tired and didn't seem to take to her or the assistant, wouldn't say anything and kept doing his new 'cross face' at them both.

Better go, we are going to stay with the ILs for the weekend and I think I am meant to be getting things ready.

neenz · 18/03/2010 21:15

Essie that is outrageous!

Amber, aren't grandmas great . What a thing to say, I think they lose all tact once they hit 70!

Sybil, sorry to hear about the sickness

I can't believe it is 9 deg in NZ and you don't have heating. Brrr! I hate being cold too so I am feeling your pain.

Spider, sorry you are feeling yuk, but it does make you feel a lot more reassured doesn't it.

I am off to a Michelin-starred restaurant on Saturday. Well I'm not sure the actual restaurant has a Michelin star but the owner has - Nigel Haworth, it's called Northcote Manor. It's my Christmas present. We are staying over too. Without the kids of course . Then we are off to a cottage next week in Derbyshire, near the Peak District. So looking forward to that .

neenz · 18/03/2010 21:17

Rolf, the bm can only help her fight off the infection so fingers crossed!

DoNotFeedMeBiscuits · 18/03/2010 22:15

posting and waving - studying hell. thanks for missing me Deb, I felt the ♥. (get me with my Alt code - thanks ktpie!)

exams are on wednesday, so will be back after that.

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 18/03/2010 22:45

Good luck Biscuits !

Bugger if you're lurking - how are things now?

SpiderWilliam · 19/03/2010 08:19

Yes good luck biscuits

Sybil how is J today?

Amber's story has just reminded me of what my MIL said when we told her I was pg: "Well you'll have to eat less this time so you don't have such a big baby"

Neenz yes it is reassuring. Hope you enjoy your birthday present.

Essie, no ILs are in the North East, so not near Sponge. They haven't seen P since Xmas, so I think they would like us to stay a little longer than the 2.5 days that DH can schedule because of workaholism work commitments.

Penguin when I lived in Oz (Canberra which has cold frosty winters) I remember suffering too with their inadequately heated houses.

PiggyPenguin · 19/03/2010 14:00

J is a little better. He is not really eating but has stopped vomiting, which is great. Unfortunately now the other two and I have got the bug which is a nightmare as DH is abroad.

I was pinned to the loo at 4 this morning unable to do anything other than listen as they both threw up in their beds. We are having a hellish day, but J is having a nap so the three of us are trying to rest on the sofa's.

I will read everything but probably won't get to post again. Sorry it is a me, me, me post.

Rolf · 19/03/2010 14:26

Oh, poor you Sybil. That sounds truly horrendous. I hope you are all better soon.

Amberc · 19/03/2010 15:54

OMG sybil - it sounds dreadful you poor poor thing. Why do these things always happen when you're on your own? The poor kiddies too. I hope it's a short illness - vomiting bugs don't usually last that long thankfully.

Neenz - what a lovely weekend you have planned - very

ktpie, have you got one of those duvets that zips up the side or do you tuck it in?

I am going mad living in a bloody building site. A whole side of my house is now being supported by scaffolding, the whole house is full of dust and I can't stop sneezing - all this to change a freaking fireplace! Actually they have exposed the windows now (which bizarrely were partially covered before) so it is much much better and I know it's a bit like labour- You go through all the pain but when you look at your beautiful child (or fireplace in my case) a few months later you've forgotten it ever hurt at all

neenz · 19/03/2010 17:54

Yes it will be definitely worth it in the end Amber. when will it be finished? DH has mad ideas about selling our place, buying something that needs doing up then selling that and buying something like what we live in now so we can be mortgage free. I say no way, it is not worth it, I am not living on a building site for years with 3/4 young kids just to move out again at the end of it!

Sybil, hope the sickness goes away soon. It sounds horrid.

I am so glad it is nearly bedtime. I went to playgroup this morn and cos it is sunny they opened the outdoor area, which has numerous climbing frames/swings etc which are a bloody danger so you have to chase your kids round making sure they don't fall off something or get creamed by another kid!

It is totally exhausting. I might give that playgroup a miss for the rest of the summer - tho I do have two good friends there now who I enjoy seeing. Perhaps I can convince them to come here instead - I am much cheaper than playgroup

Amberc · 19/03/2010 19:54

Neenz it'll be at least until the ende of next week - Puree i'll have to come and camp out at yours for the morning one day next week - hope that's ok!

Neenz also I have to run around after Luke like a mad woman at the playground so God knows what it would be like with two!

DebInAustria · 19/03/2010 22:07

Just a quickie to say hope everyone gets better soon Sybil, how awful to be able to hear them being sick in and not be able to get there with the bucket cos you're sick too.

Busy here, sil and bil coming tomorrow, planning Xmas dinner as we didn't see them at XMas, complete with crackers!

Will be lurking over the next few days, but thanks for all the messages when I was feeling lonely. We might be getting an offer from the English couple so keep everything crossed for us!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 20/03/2010 11:47

Sybil sounds like you've had a truly horrid time - hope you and everyone else is now on the mend.

Don't know how you manage chasing after two in the playground while pregnant Neenz. There is a great park in Edinburgh which has a fab toddler play area and S just wears me out running around after him. Especially now he's clearly decided that the toddler area is too easy and is always dashing off to the bigger stuff!

Amber am at how much work needed - I'm sure it will be worth it. Will we get some before and after pictures on fb?

DH has been away all week and I've had whatever bug S had last weekend so I'm just worn out now (clearly nothing compared to Sybil's week though). Can someone with older kids tell me what age they grow out of the stage where everything's a battle? Refusing to take socks off (to go in the bath), refusing to put socks on (when we're going out), crying for shoes (when wearing slippers indoors), crying for slippers (when trying to put shoes on to go outdoors). Loving walking outside, but only if they can walk in the opposite directions to where you need to go, crying to be picked up when walking to the shops, and screaming to be put down 2 seconds later... Can anyone tell that my 30 minute trip to the shop that is 2 minutes walk away was quite stressful .

Puree if you're lurking - how are things? I wondered if you'd gone ahead with C's dummy withdrawal and if so, how it went? S has given up his for nursery naps, so only has it for nighttime naps. However, it's getting increasingly difficult to get it off him in the morning and he's looking for it as soon as he gets home from nursery. It causes all sorts of tantrums when he can't have it, so I think it's time to start thinking about removing it completely (although I'm tempted to wait till after our holiday in May).

Deb I was a bit surprised to read that you were planning Christmas dinner - that's early, even by my standards!!! . Hope you have a lovely time. Mmmmmm, turkey and trimmings - yum. Fingers crossed for the house!
