Oi! Over 'ere!

I'm using my sick leave well and have just booked a holiday in Oban - we're going to see Balamory and sea eagles, hopefully.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GeorginaA · 21/07/2005 17:18

Btw, if you need to overlap like that more than about 3 days, do go back to see the docs. I had to take painkillers round the clock like that for something (and it escapes me for what now, it'll come back to me) fairly recently - and I started feeling really ill by the 4th day with shakes and feeling out of it, I'm sure due to the side effects of the painkillers. The experience has meant I will only do the round the clock thing for my kids if ABSOLUTELY necessary and not for more than 2-3 days.

GeorginaA · 21/07/2005 17:18

Ah... tonsilitis - I remember now!

SusiS · 21/07/2005 19:21

egypt: ds had the same! week after mmr he had really high temperature for 2 days and spots all over! the spots lasted good 2 weeks but he wasn't bothered by them at all!

nurofen/calpol is what we did too to keep the temp down

egypt · 21/07/2005 19:52

thank u. she seems so much better now though! weird. her temp has gone down as she is having a right ole laugh. spots still there though, but i guess she is feeling ok due to the medicine. i havent given her nurofen yet as she is okish on the calpol and i remembered the doc saying once, 'i wouldnt give it unless absolutely necessary as its more riskier!' not sure how. also dh cant taken iburofen - it makes him loopy and violent. apparently. i have never experience him on it.

aaanyway, i also wondered....... it says after 1 years old, they can have 1-2 5ml spoonfuls. but not more than four doese in 24 hours. does that mean she can have FOUR 10ml doses in 24 hours? or two?

Prufrock · 21/07/2005 20:47

The only problem with nurofen is that some children (usually those with family history of autoimmune disorders like asthma and exczema) can be intolerant of Ibuprofen, especially if it is given when very young.
I've always stuck to 4*5ml doses in 24 hours, and time similarly to G.

However (and I'm being contraversial here and hugely medicated first time round with dd so feel free to ignore) I very very rarely give ds anything to bring down his temp. Since "discovring" homeopathy, I've become quite evangelical about the bodies ability to heal itself. A temperature is not an illness in itself, but a response to an illness - by heating the body the immune system destroys bugs. So by treating a temperature, you are actually preventing the body from destroying the bugs as quickly. I do make an exception on the rare occasions that the temp is so high it makes a baby go floppy and listless - I figure that is an overreaction of the immune system which does need suppressing. But the rest of the time I treat temps with an absence of clothes, cold flannels on the forehead, and lukewarm batsh. Oh and chocolate buttons and mummy cuddles (both of which are medically proven to cure any illness.)

Lol Prufrock - very new age. I thought about giving DD some calpol tonight to make up for her nutting the patio (large lump appeared) this evening but forgot and she has been sleeping soundly since 7.30 (have checked on her btw!). And she had no painkillers after her fall down the stairs and slept as well as can be expected on a children's ward - ie a lot better than me. Egypt on the dosage thing when DS has been given painkillers post-operatively (and next week will be his 4th op in 4 years) they have told me to give him somewhere between the two amounts. So if it says 5-10 ml when he was 2 I was to give him 6 ml and 7 when he was 3 and so on. But for DD so far I have always found 5 ml to be sufficient. On the MMR front - DD had hers on the 5th and tonight I have noticed some spots - only a few - one on her arm, leg, tummy and we wondered if they were MMR related but it seems a bit too long ago. When DS had his he seemed to have swollen glands some time afterwards which I put down to the mumps component.

DD is at the wanting to join in stage at the moment. She was playing with DS on the hall with a bouncy ball and every time he threw himself on the floor she did. I think following DS was what resulted in her banging her head too. We have two shallow steps from the patio to the lawn and DS went up to get his ball, DD followed, DS came back, DD followed and instead of crawling down like I've shown her, walked down, overbalanced put her hands down but her head went down too. Asda brought the shopping and she was joining in carrying bags up the hall to the kitchen - I had to strategically empty them of all but 1 item. Then tonight when DH undressed her she picked up all her clothes to put in the basket. And when she dropped her socks she bent down and picked them up again unlike DS.

Going to look pretty for her cousin's christening though because not only does she have a huge lump on her head but she also fell off a zebra at nursery and bust her lip.

Judd · 21/07/2005 22:27

DH isn't home yet. He went to Orpington on the train this morning at 5.30am and because of the disturbances in London, accepted a lift as far as Watford from a colleague on the way back. Bloke's car got a flat tyre on the M25 and they couldn't find a garage.....
So he got a train at 9pm and won't be back until 11.30pm. Can't settle to do anything until I know he's back safely. Thank goodness for Big Bro and MN to see me through!
DD is going through a scared of the dark phase and came down 4 times between 8 and 9pm. She's also been waking around 5.30am so must be completely exhausted. It MUST be a phase, she's always been a fab sleeper.
DS is gorgeous although we have a photo of him with no top on in his highchair and he looks like Andy off Little Britain. He's just so chatty and happy! He's doing so much walking, in fact he isn't really playing with any toys much at all. Just walking up and down holding them a lot.

Bozza · 21/07/2005 22:31

Oh Judd sympathies. Was a bit peeved that DH wasn't home until 7 tonight having been away last night. But its totally different for you. As soon as he gets home get him into bed and cuddle him and then get some sleep!! You'll be knackered tomorrow.

LOL at the walking up and down holding them a lot though. Although have to say DD much prefers walking up and down holding DS's toys than her own. Had a bit of a scrap when she took it upon herself to carry DS's leappad by the pen.

Judd · 21/07/2005 22:35

Our objects of choice are: - a shoe, plastic mushy peas from food set, computer mouse (thankfully infra red, not with whole monitor attached!) or the bathroom plug.

Judd · 21/07/2005 22:40

Was meant to start cleaning job at the youth club tonight - only 3 hours once a fortnight but will give me a £20 note earned all on my own ! Luckily have managed to postpone it.
Can't find a single biscuity/chocolatey thing in the kitchen at all, probably coz we are both meant to be on a healthy eating kick, but rubbish when you really want something! I've got a feeling there's a little pot of Ambrosia though that I could snaffle.
Well, we've almost finished the first week of holidays and it's been OK. Have found plenty to do to fill in the time without having to resort to a trip to the clinic or Sainsburys (has play area)

egypt · 22/07/2005 09:02

hope dh got home ok judd

my dh has been away from monday night and returned last night at 9pm. he has to travel up from london but managed to avoid anything sinister. i feel terrible as i'd forgotten that he was even IN london that day! ooops. it kind of reared as a faint memory 'london....thursday' when i heard the news, but i knew everybody was ok and the chances of him being involved were highly unlikely. he didnt ring me in case i WAS worried though! but that's dh. i'm sure he would have if it was anything more.

sounds terrible. we do still love each other!

dd seems much brighter this morning as is chatting in her high chair as we speak. all this despite waking at 130 and 530. i am shattered. how did i do that for a year?!?

egypt · 22/07/2005 09:04

that didnt make sense. i didnt mean he avoided ringing me in case i was worried. i meant.....he could have phoned in case i was worried. iyswim. oh its too early

GeorginaA · 22/07/2005 14:01

Hope all the MMR babies are feeling better now - we haven't been called for ours yet, nor ds1's preschool boosters - not sure if I should remind them or not!

Am feeling a bit pathetic and teary today. Ds1 has had his last ever Tumbletots and his last ever nursery day. Ds2 has started to walk 10+ steps at a time. And this morning we went to look at a day nursery for ds2 (the idea being he gets to go one day a week, starting in a fortnight's time, so I get some one-to-one time with ds1 over the summer, and also a couple of hours after school a week once term starts). Also, next week there's a farewell party for one of ds1's good friend's who is emigrating to Germany.

It's such an end of an era. Everything is all change, and while it's exciting I feel so dreadfully, dreadfully sad. I know, it's pull yourself together time, Georgina, but I just can't help it.

I'm doing the right thing re: the nursery, aren't I?

Judd · 22/07/2005 14:27

If we had the money, I would want to do exactly the same re: nursery, Georgina. I cram 1:1 with DD in during the LTN but it's tricky as it's also prime time to get jobs done and she can also be tired and not really in the mood. He will benefit, you and DS1 will benefit - everyone's a winner.

egypt · 22/07/2005 16:25

not entirely convinced these spots are due to the mmr. was anyone's lo completely covered in them, especially on the torso. were they raised and pink? to me, this is what i thought chicken pox looked like. hmm, might do a search

egypt · 22/07/2005 16:34

oh and she has had frequent, runny nappies all day

egypt · 22/07/2005 16:42

this may be a useful website for seeing pics of all the rashes and diseases....although perhaps a little disturbing

measles etc

GeorginaA · 22/07/2005 16:52

egypt - I really don't remember with ds1 - I don't remember him getting any rash, but do remember him having a very high temperature 5 days after the jab. Sorry I can't be of more help

Is it worth telephoning the nurse at your surgery and just describing the symptoms over the phone? They must be used to seeing children with vaccination side effects and will be in a better position to tell you if it's a standard thing or if it's worth going in to check it's not something else.

egypt · 22/07/2005 17:16

they're closed now, but tbh, dd is fine in herself. she certainly doesnt look like any of the pics of the measles or chicken pox. the hv saw the spots yesterday and said 'yep, its the measles part coming out of her', but they weren't at all as widespread as they are today. although i did ask if they would get worse and she said they could. its the temp to worry about, not the spots, she said. i think i am just being a bit silly. she is ok in herself and has eaten a bit of tea. now pottering around chatting to herself

GeorginaA · 22/07/2005 18:18

Bless her - it's always a bit of a relief when they start acting themselves again, isn't it?

ds2 is teething badly today - been absolutely miserable except for the time we were at the nursery - he perked up for that and had a good old explore. Hopefully a good sign!

egypt · 22/07/2005 19:08

bless him too.

dd has gone to bed fine.

makes me laugh, but dd is so used to dh going out (work) or away (work!) that she just associates him with saying and waving bye bye now. as soon as she saw him this morning she waved and said 'ba bay' and when he got home from work tonight too. poor dh was rather upset. found it q amusing myself!

kbaby · 24/07/2005 21:36

Hi,
Sorry to hear that everyones lo's are feverish. DD had her MMR on wednesday and today has been so grouchy. Her temp is fine but she cries if you leave her or she trips etc.
Shes started getting a temper. She keeps hitting my face and I hold her hands and say 'no dont hit it hurts' and she does it again so I tell her off again and then she gets really annoyed and starts pulling her own hair in frustration!! whats all that about.
She growing so much though. Shes walking everywhere now and even though I said I didnt like reins I have brought her a pair as she wizzes everywhere and im frightened of losing grip on her hand. Shes ubderstanding more and you can ask her to fetch things and she copies sentences. She is book mad and wants you to look at books with her all the time. She points to all the animals and does sounds.
The sweetest thing she does now is sing to herself in the car and bedtime. we can hear her on the monitor singing row, row, row and ba, ba , ba. They being the only bits she know.
Oh well back to work tomorrow another weekend gone.

Bozza · 24/07/2005 22:11

kbaby. DD doesn't usually get cross unless she thinks you are taking her food away from her. I've also retrieved DS's reins for her. Took them to Asda and held her with them while I made DS try on school uniform yesterday. Today we have been to the christening and so DD, who is a real party animal, has had a great day. My MIL has agreed to have her overnight on Thursday in prep for DS's op. "Will she go to sleep alright for me?" No idea really.

egypt · 25/07/2005 07:46

good new about your mil taking dd bozza.

kbaby, my dd is EXACTLY the same with regards to the hitting face and getting so frustrated she hurts herself! she can throw herself backwards on the floor/in the highchair and really whack her head. she makes a real tense face and scrunches her fists when you take anything away from her or tell her no whilst removing her. telling her no from a distance just results in her saying 'DO'OH' (no) too and doing it anyway. think i may have a strong-willed little monkey to deal with!

your dd copying sentence is fab! dd tried to sing Balamory but saying in a tuneful, gentle voice 'Baaaaaaaa mmmmmmmmmaaaaa'. very amusing. not a hint of a sentence though! apart from her attempt at 'Jelly and Jackson' maybe. more like 'Js js'

bless 'em

dh has just left for america for 10 days. i'm off to my mums as per usual. should be a good 10 days. going to get dd a bridesmaid with my cousin who is getting married in oct. ahhh.

also, not sure what to do about the holiday. supposed to be off to sharm el sheikh with the parents and inlaws in sept but of course........
i'm wanting to say stuff it, lets not go. but dh being all optimistic says wait to see what the home office and tour operators say. ie, if the ho tell the public they shouldnt visit, the t.o. will HAVE to refund or send us somewhere else. if we cancel now we may lose our fully paid holiday. is suppose he's right. i just have fears that they will say 'be vigilant' in which case dh will say 'let's go' but myself and my mum and def my sister will be saying 'you DONT take a 1 year old to a place that they have started to bomb!' and there'll be another family row.....

egypt · 25/07/2005 07:47

just re-read my post. i must learn to preview. lots of incorrect tenses going on and i meant a bridesmaid's DRESS. not an actual bridesmaid
