Oh thank goodness. Thank you Myjob and CSWS. I would have been up until I heard.

Star - Give that boy an extra hard squeeze!

Ekka · 11/01/2010 22:51

Oh, what a relief. Thank goodness Star, you must be so pleased.

StarExpat · 11/01/2010 22:52

Thanks all for your support That was the scariest 6 hours of my whole life But I feel elated that blood test results came back clear. THANK GOODNESS!
We had just gone to the gp at 4.15 (early) to get Q checked because my friend couldn't keep him awake all day today and he was very lethargic yesterday, too... horrid cough and fevers, so went to GP and he noticed a weird red mark on his ear and another on his chest. This GP dismisses everything so when he said "I'm writing a letter for you to give to the paed at the hospital now - you should get there within the hour - do you need transport?" I got really scared. At the children's A&E Q got looked over by the paed (finally) and he found a few more spots that wouldn't fade and told me it would probably all be ok and just tonsilitis. he looked in his throat as well and said his tonsils are so big and red that there is only a little space between them righ tnow (which explains lack of apetite and quick paced breathing, fevers...etc.).

Then I hear him as I'm behind a curtain with Q... I hear him on the phone requesting to be connected to a paed in brighton. He proceeds to describe Q's situation and is quite blunt "very cold extremeties, high fever, suspicious rash, definitely has tonsilitis. I just want to second opinion.." Then he goes on and on explaining everything I had told him and he had read in the notes about Q! I was so scared. He comes back in and says, calmly, "I think we'll just do a blood test to rule out anything nasty". We had to sit there while they continuously monitored him and his poor little arm was all wrapped up so they could keep the tube in just in case he needed anything through IV once blood tests came back. We waited for THREE HOURS for the blood test. Torture!!
Finally they said his blood test results were clear of anything more sinister and it's probably just tonsillitis. But I have to monitor him tomorrow all day and make sure no more marks appear. If he gets a lot more or if he gets any on his lower half then I need to take him back in right away. I'll be home tomorrow then... I'm glad he has the abx now at least.
They gave me an antibiotic and sent me on my way...
I canNOT believe how scary that was.
Unfortunately there was another little boy in the next room who was just minutes before I got my news, he was confirmed to definitely have meningitis
When I went to collect him after school his eyes were closing and opening like he was on his way to sleep. He was only up for a couple of hours all day.. And walked about 20 steps.
Ugh, sorry to go on and on... That was just so frightening!

50ftQueenie · 11/01/2010 22:58

I can't imagine how frightened you must have been Star. I'm so glad you're home and you can tuck Q up in his own bed tonight. As I said, give him an extra squeeze from all of us. But he is very naughty for scaring his poor mummy like that! I hope you manage to get some sleep tonight, but I expect the adrenalin will keep you up for a while yet.

did they not even say afterwards what they had tested for star?
It all does sound horribly scary. I hope that the abs work very quickly for him and that there is no more rash.
Off to bed now - hope that you are able to get some sleep too.

StarExpat · 11/01/2010 23:42

tested for meningitis. Then told me they also looked at platelet count (??) and something else but I had stopped listening by that point knowing it wasn't meningitis. Something about the platelets though and that's why I need to check him over tomorrow and make sure the marks don't spread at all or that he doesn't get any on his lower half (again...??) No idea really. Just happy that they were happy to finally let us go and take the tube out of his hand and call it Tonsillitis!

aubergenie · 12/01/2010 06:44

Oh Star I've just come on and seen your messages from last night. How terrifying. I'm so glad he's ok.

50ftQueenie · 12/01/2010 07:02

I think the platelet count is something to do with white blood cells. If the platelet count is high then there are more white blood cells than normal which shows that there is some sort of infection. White blood cells do the fighting so if there are more around, it means that the body is trying to fight something. It sounds like the platelet count was high, which is why they want you to keep an eye on Q because his body is have on hell of a big old scrap! Such is my limited lay person understanding. I'm sure Ronshar can correct me if Im talking rubbish!

50ftQueenie · 12/01/2010 07:06

I meant having one hell of a scrap. M was climbing on my back while I was trying to write!

Pistachio - The peanut butter cup cakes are delicious as are the chocolate full stops (or dots either way the tiny chocolate cakes). But be careful with the tiny chocolate cakes, it's very easy to accidentally inhale three at a time. Notice a theme in my choices? Oh and you have to make the Pistachio & chocolate cake. It would be a crime for you not to!

50ftQueenie · 12/01/2010 07:25

Ronshar - Sorry things are rubbish at the moment. Things having been getting on top of me lately too. I'm sick of all of my children (that includes DH at the moment because he's being a pain in the arse). I'm fed up with the constant battles, trying to get them all to do what they're supposed to! If we lived nearer to each other I think it would be time to go out on the lash!

Hmm - Sorry, bit late in replying to you, but that is soooo typical. I used to hang around gassing to the manager at DS's nursery so I would see poor mummies having their screaming toddlers peeled off them, leaving feeling terrible only for the same toddler to be having a little dance or spin around or whatever toddlers do for entertainment, within a minute after the poor guilt-ridden mummy has left. Toddlers are like dogs, out of sight out of mind.

Umm....

CSWS - Yay for heartbeat. We didn't find out with either of ours and we had loads of extra scans due to the cysts I had. It was tough but I did enjoy having a surprise.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/01/2010 07:36

Bah humbug - sleep is not going well chez csws at the moment. Ds waking stupidly early, regardless of what time he goes to bed, and not happy when he does (or most of the day tbh). Don't know if it's due to re-introducing dairy, teeth, a lack of my milk or what, but I'm tired and bored of it.

How is Q this morning star?

OP posts:
50ftQueenie · 12/01/2010 08:01

M was up at 5.30 this morning CSWS. We seem to have developed a three day cycle: 1) Good night, only one waking, up at 7, 2) Good night, only one waking but up stupidly early & 3) rubbish night three or four wakings & up stupidly early. So looking forward to tonight.....

StarExpat · 12/01/2010 08:48

Sorry about all the bad sleep everywhere. We're having crap sleep at the moment now, too - although he has slept pretty much all day sun, mon and so far today. Up at 5am but back to sleep at 7.30 - I went into school to prep for my substitute at 5.50 so DH could leave here at 7.

Q is tired still but temp is way down. Still a fever but way down from yesterday. Still short of breath and chesty cough and sleepy but when he's awake he's playing with toys for a few min at a time which is more than yesterday. he seems a bit happier... we'll see.

Thanks for platelet explanation 50ft That makes sense. No more marks or rash

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/01/2010 08:53

looking on the bright side 50ft, at least you have routine and predictability . I had dd down at 5.20 too, to tell me about her sore toenail .
