arrggghhh stupid american upbringing . I've talked about this with friends from home recently and they all leave heating on 24/7 and just turn it down when they aren't home. I like it to be warm when I wake up but having it come on an hour before waking would be just fine. And maybe 30 min before we're due home. When we're here all day, we'll keep it on I think. Like weekends and snow days. This will save us a lot of money I think.

I have just talked about this with my dad on the phone and he too said he wouldn't turn the heat off in the winter but just down at night so it's not using as much. People are so much more aware here in the UK. He was also alarmed at the cost of petrol here. It is astronomical compared to the US. But it makes sense that it should be pricey, actually. It shouldn't be something we just use up without thinking about it!

ok wait we have a combi boiler. I need to find a thread on here about heating I guess. do people keep hot water on without heating, then? 16 degrees is very very cold!!!

pistachio - my best friend from childhood's mother used to always tell me when we had sleepovers "you will never find a man who wants to marry you if you sleep with socks" She was very very concerned with every speck of her house being immaculately clean and I think she worried about socks in her bed linens - but I always change into clean socks to get into bed (as I like very clean bed linens, too!).

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/01/2010 22:09

We have our heating on round the clock at the moment - our house gets far too cold far too quick and takes far too long to warm back up again to turn it off. And of course dh and I have both been at home during the day every day for the last couple of years. And of course our boiler is also our cooker, so if it's off then it takes half an hour or so to get the hob hot enough to do anything useful with, which is not much cop when you have hungry toddlers.

And yes star, hot water and heating normally each have separate controls, so you can have water without heat.

we have a thermostat timer star - it changes the minimum temperature it's aiming for according to the time of day. So at night it's set at 14 then at 5.30am cranks up to 17 for a couple of hours then down again with another boost for the evening. Hot water on all the time - you never know when your kids will need an emergency bath in my experience!
LOL at bedsocks all the time
I'm also pondering the fact that the "other" activities are probably more messy than socks will ever be if you're stressed about bedlinen!!

Honeymoonmummy · 07/01/2010 23:30

I wear socks in bed too Star. I can't remember when I started but I can't get to sleep without them on now, even in summer

Our heating takes ages to warm up too so we've had it on constant recently. ALso, we can't heat up water without having the heating on, a real PITA in summer.

Star, I don't know what u mean re laughing about HMM and FB? [short memory emoticon]

Poppy is much better now, it's so nice to see her smiling so much today after 5 days with practically no smiles and constant whining, poor soul.

I'm actually going into work tomorrow for the first time, eek what do I wear!!! Will try to log on at lunchtime to tell you how it's going, altho I have to finish my report tmrw so may not have a lunch... I've just done the DAvina workout DVD tonight too, so I'm feeling rather smug...

Night all!

i've had my heating on all day this past week, it's so cold here and both neighbours on either side have moved out so it's even colder than normal. usually its on 7-9am and 5-7pm. and it's not on at all may-oct. i only put the water on for baths in the summer. luckily i can have water without heat.

yeah school is back today!

50ftQueenie · 08/01/2010 11:25

Me too Pistachio. If we have our heating off during the day we can see our breath within a few minutes. We're in a draughty old Edwardian place so high ceilings, chimney breast in every room (I am amazed how much cold air comes down a chimney) floor boards, howling gales through the gaps round the front door...... My DC are bouncing off the walls. I went to the kitchen to speak to my mum in peace only to come back to find M smashing ds's head into the living room window & then head butting it herself! She was laughing manically the whole time. Strange children. Maybe they've gone snow mad.

Hmm - Hope your first day back in the office is a good one. Glad poor P is feeling better now. It's nice to get them back after they've been ill for a while isn't it?

Pepper - You sound much happier this morning. Hope that's because you have finally been able to rejoin the civilised world and have heating & hot water again. I can't imagine being without either in this weather, must have been miserable for you.

We don't have our heating on at night either Aubergenie. DH is a radiator himself so our bed is always very warm. DS would happily sleep in the snow outside and M seems to be cold no matter how warm you make the room!

Star - M wore socks in bad last night and I think it helped her sleep!

DH and I were intimate for the first time since my op (my stomach has been very tender until very recently) last night. I was very surprised at how embarrassed and uncomfortable I was about my scar. It's not like me as the scar is evidence of an op that ultimately saved my life so I wouldn't normally be ashamed of it. I hope it's a one off.

50ft about your scar! I bet DH did not mind in the least.
I am much happier today - we have no heating and no hot water, BUT they've promised to come today even if it's evening, AND the DCs have all gone to nursery .
School still shut but nursery agreed to take DS1 as we have no heating! (and we'll pay...!)
Am sat at home working with a scarf, hiking socks a plug in radiator inches from me and a hot water bottle under each foot!
I have a fixed work computer in the coldest part of the house - DH is in the lounge on the sofa with the same size radiator and it's at least 5 degrees warmer in there -he's being very smug....

pepperrabbit · 08/01/2010 12:42

myjob - I'm a little undecided. I don't think DS1 would get it as he's 5 but the other 2 are eligible. Seems odd to only do 2 of them. Also DD has yet to be well enough for her MMR, I've cancelled 2 appts already. 3rd time lucky Tuesday if we can get there.
But then, I think how poorly they could potentially be if they catch it???
I'm not really helping am I!

oh pepper I hope you get heating soon! I can't believe you're surviving in that! and pepper you're right about the bedlinens... I have strict rules about making a "mess" on bedlinens and such activities rarely take place on them... keeps it exciting elsewhere anyway

myjob wow. That sounds really cold!! I must be a wimp. I need to be warm.

HMM - elephant... or was that not you??

StarExpat · 08/01/2010 12:55

myjob I am not giving Q the swine flu jab. It's too new for my liking. I've yet to get the MMR, I'm going to get it I just need Q to be well. Which he has been for a while I just forgot to reschedule!
He now has inflamed tonsils and some sort of virus with the most horrid barking cough I've heard from him yet Went to the GP this morning at 9.50.... Q was in bed (tossing and turning every 20 min)... but still in bed... and didn't get up for the day until...... drumroll.... 7.55am!!!!!!!!! . Then he fell asleep on way back from dr at 10.15 and is now napping again. I think it's because he's ill. The dr gave me nothing for his big red tonsils or raspy sounding chest. They said wait 4-5 days and if it hasn't gotten better to bring him in again for medicine

myjob - I'm going to rule out "heat rash"
eczema can present like that sometimes. I've had that (when I used to get eczema). But I'm not positive. You know what I'd do... ring NHS direct!
Take a photo and post to fb or your profile and maybe Ronshar can tell you...? (sorry ronshar to offer up your services so freely! ).

pistachio - I had asthma as a child and have been experiencing it a bit as an adult recently, too... I'm very worried that Q will have it and so every time he gets wheezy and chesty I want to get it checked. An asthma attack is so scary and I really don't want that to happen

StarExpat · 08/01/2010 13:14

and LOL at your imagination pistachio
I've never thought about incorporating cleaning products....hmm.... stop giving me ideas!

Sorry that your DS is ill, too But it's comforting to know that Q isn't alone and that it's somewhat "normal"
