CSWS - You're alright with sweet potatoes aren't you? These (oven baked) Leon sweet potato falafal were lovely when I had them in the restaurant. I just found the recipe on the Guardian website:

Makes around 18 falafel - enough for four

2 medium sweet potatoes (orange inside), around 700g in total

1½ tsp ground cumin

2 small cloves of garlic, chopped

1½ tsp ground coriander

2 big handfuls of fresh coriander, chopped (about 30g)

Juice of half a lemon

120g gram flour

A splash of olive oil

A sprinkling of sesame seeds

Salt and pepper

Preheat the oven to 220C/425F and roast the sweet potatoes whole until just tender (45 minutes to 1 hour). Turn off oven, leave the potatoes to cool, then peel.

Put the sweet potatoes, cumin, garlic, ground and fresh coriander, lemon juice and gram flour into a large bowl. Season well, and mash until smooth with no large chunks. Stick in the fridge to firm up for an hour, or the freezer for 20-30 minutes. When you take it out, your mix should be sticky rather than really wet. You can add a tablespoon or so more of gram flour if necessary (the water content of sweet potatoes varies enormously).

Reheat the oven to 200C/400F. Using a couple of soup spoons (put a well-heaped spoonful of mix in one spoon and use the concave side of the other to shape the sides) or a falafel scoop if you have one, make the mixture into falafelly looking things and put them on an oiled tray. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and bake in the oven for around 15 minutes, until the bases are golden brown.

It makes you wonder what on earth they put in those nappies doesn't it Myjob. S is Ok with regular Pampers but these were Pampers Simply Dry (basically the cheap ones). I bought a huge pack but will have to put them on Freecycle now.

Polenta is one of very few foods that I actually don't like, even though I always think that I should, since I like corn in just about every other form.

I can't eat really spicy stuff - have never been able to, so would struggle enormously with that dish. When I make a (meat) chilli the only chilli flavouring comes from using tinned red kidney beans in chilli sauce!

Yes, I can use basmati rice to a (very) limited degree pistachio - brown basmati rice is much more manageable. Do you have an actual recipe for your paella dish, or is it just bung stuff in a pan and hope for the best (like most of my cooking is)?

Ekka - I am avoiding seafood (but not fish) because ds may well be anaphylactic (sp?) to it. I made seafood risotto once which he had, and the roof of his mouth swelled up to below where his teeth would have been if he'd had teeth at the time! We suspect it was a mussel that he'd chewed that caused it, but daren't risk other seafood (except poss prawns, as he'd had them before) just in case. GP has given steroids to give him in an emergency to buy an extra few mins whilst dashing to hospital , but says to avoid seafood except prawns for him for now.

50ft - I couldn't have porridge even made with water and with nothing but splenda on it last time, so made with milk and with agave nectar falls into the 'not a hope in hell' category! I couldn't have any cereal at all, despite that being what they recommended. I also couldn't have the beans on toast that they suggested either. But I will absolutely not see the bitch dietician again this time. I saw her once last time and she reduced me to tears being so rude and patronising (I was obv a bit sensitive anyway as had just found out that I had GD). She told me off like a naughty schoolgirl for eating soft eggs. I was too upset to point out that salmonella has been eradicated from lionmarked eggs, but I think I did point out that her advice had nothing to do with the diabetes, which was what I was there for.

Right, shall try and skim read again to see if I've missed responding to any more points.

Oh yes, make up - all of mine is really old. I can't bear to throw it away - it will have cost me lots at the time. I don't wear it often so it lasts me ages. I suspect that the only thing I have newer than 4 or 5 years is my powder compact, and poss a lipliner and a lipstick or two.
I did use some eyeshadow for one of my nights out recently, and the spongey brush thing disintegrated on my eye .
What happens if it's old? Does it actually harm you in any way?

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 21:34

Oh I like the sound of that recipe aubergenie - I will give it a try and see what it does to my blood sugar once I have a fresh testing kit (test sticks on my old one are out of date and the machine reads that and won't let you use them!). Am seeing diabetic midwife on Monday afternoon, so don't have long to wait.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 21:35

What would you serve the falafel with aubergenie/star? I like mine stuffed in wholewheat pitta bread with coleslaw, but suspect that the bread and the potato and the gram flour will be too much for me.

aubergenie · 19/12/2009 21:38

CSWS - Can you have fruit or is that too sugary?

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 21:40

Can't have much of it aubergenie, but a little, and better in the afternoon than the morning.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 21:40

I used to have porridge with mashed banana and cream for my evening treat last time!

50ftChristmasTree · 19/12/2009 22:02

Aw bugger about the porridge CSWS. The fruits that have a low GI are berries, cherries, apricots, plums, peaches, grapefruit, apples...... I would have the falafel with roasted vegetables if I was trying to lose weight (and therefore following low fat, low carb, dairy-free, wheat-free, sugar-free diet). Oh how I'm looking forward to new year I read somewhere that on a scale of 1-5 1 being barely any risk and 5 being big scary risk, eating runny eggs was a 1. When I was pg with DS I ate loads of sushi! Just read that all bran actually has a lower GI than porridge I thought it had tons of sugar in it. I will have a proper look tomorrow as I have got some good nutrition books, haven't had a chance today as my brother came home. If there is anything of particular use, I'll bring it for you next time we visit.

Hi guys, wow 2 nights in a row!

I think I've missed something CSWS, what exactly is the matter?

I'm on a mission to sort out my Poppy photos so I can upload them onto the digital photo frame I've bought my mum for Xmas.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 22:45

Thanks 50ft.

Hmm - I have gestational diabetes again, already.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 22:51

Oh, I spent my £50 JL voucher prize today too (had afternoon at hairdressers and shopping without dc) - bought this hat (women's hats all too small for my big bonce). It is sooooo snuggly and warm .

50ftChristmasTree · 19/12/2009 22:57

Excellent hat CSWS. I love a good Trapper hat.

Honeymoonmummy · 19/12/2009 23:03

Oh eek CSWS, I've just had to google that as I'd never heard of it. Bloody hell, on top of all your other dietary problems. BTW, I've just realised I bought you a box of chocs when we came to visit [dumbass emoticon] after all our chats about DF as well, I'm surprised you didn't say something! Sorry!

I'm off to have a read in bed then go to sleep anyway, I did the early shift this morning as DH had a hangover for the first time in over a year, I've been very smug all day Altho he's been as useful as a chocolate teapot all day

Honeymoonmummy · 19/12/2009 23:05

Oh and my makeup is really old too, isn't it the risk of conjunctivitis/ eye infections re eye makeup? I'd love to have some makeup advice and buy some new products before I go back to work but all previous makeovers in shops have made me look like a man in drag Anyone got any suggestions? I'm hopeless with makeup.

50ftChristmasTree · 19/12/2009 23:13

Bacteria can get into the make-up, especially the moist types and then can affect your skin. You're absolutely right about eye infections with eye make-up which is why the shelf life is much shorter as the risk is greater. Heh heh about looking like a man in drag, I know EXACTLY what you mean. Prescriptives are a good company to try out as they do everything according to the colouring of your skin. Clinique make-up is too subtle to be dragish (all very natural shades) so they might be worth a try. Failing that, apparently EVERYBODY looks good when using lilac eyeshadow as it brightens the eyes. I think I might have a make-up spending spree as one of my weight loss target prizes. Hmmmmm........

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/12/2009 23:15

hmm. I was surprised, but far too polite to say anything!

Clearly I didn't bang on about my gd enough when I was pregnant with ds if you have never heard of it before.

I'm useless with make up too, but would go to a bobbi brown counter by choice for advice and makeover.

aubergenie · 20/12/2009 07:32

Someone else said bobbi brown was wearing was very nice, and natural looking the other day. think i will check it out.

I wish I was wearing that hat now CSWS. In fact I could do with a bra version too. I'm feeding ds and it's freezing! he's got his feet on the keyboard so can't type well either..

StarExpat · 20/12/2009 08:09

CSWS I would eat that sweet potato falafel with brown rice. I don't really like lots of bread. I can't remember the last time I ate bread. I just don't like it very much. Q on the other hand, could spend his day eating bread and nothing else. well, maybe some butter!

I'm going to make it tonight now that I have that recipe - thanks aubergenie!!

I refuse to spend a lot on make up and keep it for ages. I don't care. I've never had a skin or eye or anything infection from it. I don't use make up often at all. I use a concealer for under my eyes so that I don't look like I've only had 4 hours of sleep total even though I really have... and I buy a cheapo tesco one for 1pound. So that does get replaced as it gets used up as you can all imagine! Chapstick, too.

StarExpat · 20/12/2009 08:17

Sometimes I use a blusher

50ftChristmasTree · 20/12/2009 09:35

No Star

Bobby Brown is very natural and subtle too. They are all companies I don't use because it's too subtle for me. I am a mascara and eyeliner girl, sometimes bright eyeshadow, never ever foundation.

aubergenie · 20/12/2009 09:59

Gah! I was supposed to be having a child-free day today. DP was going to have a lie in, then take over with S so that I could catch up with some of my own stuff and then go out, finish my Christmas shopping and meet a friend who's down in London for this weekend only. He's woken up with an stomach upset, so I'll have S all day. There's no way I can face central London with a buggy on the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

(I know he's genuinely ill and I should be sympathetic but there's always something wrong with him. It drives me mad.)
