oh hang on there was a point to me posting about the toothbrush...
are you all toothbrushing? Am a bit about it as I usually feed J to sleep so how the flip am I meant to brush his tooth?

Pukester · 17/11/2009 22:37

Dandy Tricky one. I do go to church. I don't get offended by people saying they don't believe in God (dh) but I bet most people do. Perhaps the teacher was a little upset and wasn't sure how to deal with the situation?

essenceofSES · 17/11/2009 22:37

Dandy - as someone who is quite "religious" (attended CofE as a teenager, switched to RC about 10yrs ago) I would be very disappointed at a child being told that they were rude for telling another that they didn't believe in God even at a church school. Above all I think it is important that children are allowed to question and form their own opinions and to respect other viewpoints. Although I take O to church regularly, I want him to question church teaching and not just accept what he is told so that he can forge his own beliefs.

flippineckitsnearlychristmas · 17/11/2009 22:37

Evening all!

No name checking, sorry, you talk too much and I'm tired and off to bed in a minute. But just thought I'd stick my head round the door and wave at you all.

I've sudden got a clingy baby too - my calm chilled out girl has turned into a grumpy, clingy wotsit. Thank goodness for slings, chuck her on my back and the world is a much better place.

Catch up tomorrow!

essenceofSES · 17/11/2009 22:43

Pukester - I hope the diarrhoea us just a false blip and you will truly be all clear v soon.

Smoky - I'm finding the whole teeth brushing thing a bit strange too and also feed to sleep so await others comments...

Febes - Motspur Pk by 9.30am on a Monday might be pushing it. I was hoping you'd say Epsom or Banstead!

dandy, x posted earlier.
i, too, am fairly religious (RC) but am very respectful towards other's beliefs or non-beliefs. I don't think your dd's comments were rude and shouldn't have thought the teacher from a non-religious school would think it rude either.

do bring it up in parent/teacher conversation and try to let the teacher tell the story 1st to get her point of view - maybe it was a misunderstanding?

pukester, hope the diarrhoea clears soon.

essenceofSES · 17/11/2009 22:55

Dandy - I'd be interested to know what the teachers say too. Do update us next week!

Hello flippin

I'm off to bed now. Hopefully catch up again tomorrow.
G'night!

Momino · 17/11/2009 23:04

I'm off to bed as well. Hope everyone sleeps well.

smokytom · 17/11/2009 23:14

Goodnight everyone- I'm off t'bed with me horlicks...
but before I go another thing about toothbrushing, the HV recommended I use adult toothpaste because it has more flouride but am worried this isn't a great idea because he'll be swallowing it, won't he? How do you get a 5.5 month old to rinse?

ok I'm really going now, nighty night x

FiByTheSea · 17/11/2009 23:20

smoky we used one of the slightly higher fluoride childrens toothpastes. The dentist said to not encourage ds to rinse after cleaning his teeth to maximise the effect. You only need to use a small pea sized blob for toddlers and a minuscule amount for a single tooth so don't worry about rinsing. With ds we cleaned his teeth as part of his morning get up/ bed bath routine... i didn't brush his tooth/teeth after the dream feed for fear of waking him but they were done at bed time

FiByTheSea · 17/11/2009 23:21

off to bed for me too... night night xoxox

llareggub · 17/11/2009 23:31

Dandy I don't think your DD was rude or offensive at all. I think I probably would want to raise it with the teacher as I think children should be encouraged to question and challenge when at school.

Toothbrushing we were told by our dentist not to bother trying to brush teeth until DS was about 18 months or so. I did brush them though, but I'm pretty sure we didn't do it all that often in the evening because he used to fall asleep on me before bed. I used to do them in the morning. The dentist said to try and brush but not to get too stressed out about it.

Momino · 18/11/2009 06:43

sophie, I'm off to the dentist this morning (hurrah) and am going to ask. I thought that we needed to use toothpaste specially formulated for the age that takes into consideration swallowing.

but then, most of our water isn't fluoridated like in the US is it? so we shouldn't worry too much about fluoride injestion , should we?

muddleddaizy · 18/11/2009 08:22

Morning ladies!

Enjoy the dentist Momi I had the last lot of my root canal work yesterday, but it wasn't too painful as they'd removed most of the nerve!! Re brushing of teeth. I don't think I started brushing ds1's teeth so early and never used adult toothpaste, athough I think I've heard it recommended. There are areas of the country that do have flouride in the water - mine being one of them!

Dandy my inital reaction reading your post I thought maybe the teacher was being a 'bit lazy' and didn't want to have to do the whole religious debate, but then you said she was older... Hmm. I am of a more charismatic persuasion but I wouldn't be offended by someone saying they didn't believe. I firmly believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Someone from an older generation might be offended. Just a thought on the multi cultural aspect, a muslim has their own religion, which is different to a white british person saying that they don't believe in the religion they're supposed to iyswim. My goodness me I am waffling and hope I am making sense! I think you should speak to the teacher & see what she says.

Right off to get ds2's breakfast...

smokytom · 18/11/2009 08:53

Momino Sorry to hear you have the dentist today but I'll be interested to hear what he says re; babies.

Belgianrockets · 18/11/2009 09:29

Morning all

Why oh why has C decided that 5.45 is a great time to wake up. It's not even light yet at this time of year. She then went bakc to sleep at 7.45 and is still in the land of nod as we speak. Not fair.

The toothbrushing issue is interesting. I had been wondering about it, because C now has 2 teeth. I can't quite remember what I did, but I'm sure I didn't start until they were around 1 with the other 2. I think I was told to just give babies their own toothbrush to chew, just to get used to having it in their mouth IYSWIM.

Jenn I hope the illnesses in your family go soon. It must be such hard work for you. Seems like you've had non-stop poorly dcs for over a month now

Re the religion question. I do think that muddled has a point. There is a difference between someone saying there's no god and someone saying they have a different religion. Some of my DH's family are very religious and I know they would find the former much harder to accept than the latter. Maybe the teacher is a believer herself and struggles with those kind of statements too. It's definitely a very sensitive subject

It's very windy out there again today. I'm meeting a friend later today. Luckily we've arranged for a meeting inside a shopping centre where it'll be nice and warm and dry. I'll also do my 1st bits of christmas shopping while I'm there I think.

Belgianrockets · 18/11/2009 09:30

Meant to say: good luck at the dentist momi

llareggub · 18/11/2009 10:29

Yes, thinking about it, we did give DS1 a toothbrush to chew on.

runningmonkey · 18/11/2009 12:12

Yawn... today began at 4.30 with leaky nappy, everything soaked! Took A into bed with us where she wriggled for an hour and a half [shock[ feeding on and off before thankfully giving into sleep at 6 and going through until 8.15. Still feel like my eyes need propping open tho!

Re toothbrushing - I happened to have a dentist appt the week A's teeth came through. Dentist recommended brushing twice a day, no toothpaste at all just to get her used to it. Have to admit tho we've not been all that good at doing it tho

Jenn hope your DS is ok

dandy I think you should also mention incident to teacher. You'll probably find she just didn't choose her wording very carefully in the moment, not ideal I know but I know from my own experience that you have to be v careful with the wording you use around topics like this. I teach evolution in a non-denominational school that has a real mixture of christian, jewish, muslim and sikh students. We do cover the fact that this is a controversial issue and why and it is surprising about the number of students who start saying things like 'well if you believe god created the world, you must be stupid'. In this instance I am VERY careful to discuss how important it is respect the views of others as it is up to people as individuals what they believe. Sorry waffling now. Must stop

Was going to go out today but its so windy, not sure I'll bother. First weigh in at SW tonight... am not sure chocolate cake and malted milk biscuits are really part of the plan

jenn, hope things are better today and DS feeling ok.

running/belgian, early risers indeed! hope you're not too bleary-eyed.

DD1 woke twice with nightmares but at least she went back to sleep straight away. one time I checked her she was talking in her sleep and the only work i could make out was, 'spot'. she must be dreaming of the storybook Spot but can't imagine he'd be in a nightmare .

H slept through till 6.45 so relieved. i expected her to wake since she's been unsettled in the daytime. she only had about an hour's daytime sleep yesterday.

dentist, visit was fine, teeth healthy, thank goodness. thanks for your good wishes. I didn't get to ask the fluoride for babies question though as Harper woke up at the start of the appt and I wanted to get out of there as quickly as poss. will ask when I'm back there next week for DD1&2's appts.

also, i made my next check up for 3 weeks AFTER my mat exemption runs out. would it be cheeky to change it for 3 wks earlier? i hadn't thought at the time i made it .

everyone ok today? very rainy here.

essenceofSES · 18/11/2009 13:43

Morning!

Momino - glad dentist was ok (toothy grin for you!)
I'd definitely change your appointment!

Dandy - awaiting your update It is a sensitive area but surely one that teachers and parents all come up against so it's good to persue it with the teacher and interesting to have the discussion on here.

Running - sorry for leaky nappy. That's no fun in the early hours. Good luck at SW.

We've been to meet up with our post natal group this morning at Starbucks. O had fun chewing on some of my fruit toast!
Also meant to share something cute from yesterday. We go to Jo Jingles music group every Tuesday and O is now moving around v quickly and easily. I took my eye off him for seconds yesterday and he'd moved to the front of the class and started playing with the Jo Jingles doll!! Everyone was laughing at him!

muddleddaizy · 18/11/2009 17:26

Its a bit quiet on here today!

I am having a nightmare with ds1 today. He's worn me down with his constant chatter all day! We had a kids party at church this afternoon. He lasted about 1/2hr and then wanted to leave!! I mean what kid wants to leave a party - I hope its just a one off and he's not going to be anti social!! Sigh...

Momi glad the dentist went okay. I'd be tempted to change my dental appt so that I got it free!

Ses O sounds cute!

Dandy am waiting for your update, you tease!
