TheLadyEvenstar · 21/01/2010 20:04

things which right now i am not able to go into

muppetgirl · 21/01/2010 20:11

Sorry but that is pure deflection....

WhiteWineAndJaffaCakes · 21/01/2010 20:11

So anyway........

I went to view that house today after work - this is it. It says 3 bedroom but it's only 2 (fine) - landlord will negotiate on rent. Inside is very nice & clean, obviously looked after, well-furnished so I wouldn't need to get much at all, just some stuff for Anya, stair gates, etc. It's less than a mile away, 15 mins walk tops. Minimum lease is 6 months (fine) with the option to extend (fine) - he's got no plans to sell. My head was reeling a bit afterwards - mainly because it's about half the size of my current house, in fact smaller than my first house - it feels like such a step down (does that sound silly?) - but if I'm happier there it doesn't really matter does it? I think I'll be ok when I've got my head round it - I've said I'll let them know soon with a view to maybe moving in next weekend. Your collective wisdom would be appreciated on this!?

NeedCoffee · 21/01/2010 20:18

Wondered how long it'd take before you said something like that, everyone has issues and stuff going on, why on earth offer to do the SS in the first place then.

WWAJC-I can see what you mean about down sizing and I'd be inclined to agree, but just think about how much easier and less time consuming it'll be to clean, cheaper insurance due to it being smaller and you won't be tied in forever so maybe reevaluate after a few months?

muppetgirl · 21/01/2010 20:25

WWAJC - I would say that is a lovely, clean halfway house where you can do some thinking. Nothing would be a worry, nothing looks like it needs doing and Anya gets a double room and a lovely garden. I can totally understand how you feel though...

WhiteWineAndJaffaCakes · 21/01/2010 20:29

True about cleaning and bills (council tax is lower band) - plus Anya's bedroom would be huge compared to the tiny one she's got here (if I was staying I would swap her room with the big 'office'). Anything I should check that I won't have thought about, never having rented before?

Oh and if one of you would like to pop round next weekend and tell dh what's going on that would be fab .

Dalrymps · 21/01/2010 20:31

les - Your internet connection seems to be working just fine tonight

muppetgirl · 21/01/2010 20:38

I would

  1. Run the shower to check it's okay and doesn't leak.
  2. Check the heating works
(these 2 aren't covered by the safety certs but are really necessary! We lived in a house -the dreaded Lambourn house- where we didn't have hot water for weeks and the heating would only do REALLY HOT!!!! The shower also leaked through the ceiling)
  1. Get any repairs you think need doing (doesn't look like any though) done before you move in.
  2. Are you going through an agent -what's been like as a landlord, how long have they had him on their books.
  3. Take pictures to prove the condition of the house. An inventory details but doesn't show condition and people can forget when they feel they're in the right.
  4. Is the garage included? -You don't want round him popping round unannounced.
muppetgirl · 21/01/2010 20:39

sorry, that was the imagined garage

Dalrymps · 21/01/2010 20:48

WWAJC - NC makes some good points about the new place, easier to clean is always a bonus and chaeaper to heat... Tbh it looks lovely and well maintained and isn't much different in size to our house!

We would like more room but not going to happen for a long while...

Honestly though I can understand how you feel, it must be harder to downsize once you've had bigger but I think that is a lovely house to downsize to

As the other ladies have said, it is a good stepping stone for now and convieiently close etc

Ask for dh, just write him a note, hand it to him and run away

WhiteWineAndJaffaCakes · 21/01/2010 20:54

Heating works according to agent - she's set it to come on for an hour morning/evening - kitchen felt a bit chilly but upstairs was nice and warm. Yes, going through an agent - he's only had one previous tennant - got the impression that was quite long term but yes will check. Garage was on original listing but yes will check it's included. Good idea taking pictures - there's an iron mark on the bedroom carpet but agent pointed that out. All good points Muppet, will email the agent at weekend.

WhiteWineAndJaffaCakes · 21/01/2010 21:01

xposted Dal - yes, sorry I know it's not abnormally small for a house and I certainly wasn't bragging about the size of my current house, it's not that big!, hope nobody took offence at that! It was just my initial reaction to feeling as though I'm going the wrong way on the housing ladder - a rubbish way of looking at it I know, it's just circumstances. Plus I won't be taking any of the junk I've accumulated to fill the myriad of drawers and cupboards in this place - which is refreshing in itself!

WhiteWineAndJaffaCakes · 21/01/2010 21:03

Lol at writing a note .

strawberrylace · 21/01/2010 21:14

WWAJC - I think the house looks really nice. Good decoration, and cosy - I think it would be ideal as the first stepping stone into your new life. Sorry that things have got so bad for you, but pleased that you are looking like you're getting things sorted now xx

NeedCoffee · 21/01/2010 21:17

grr MN not loading up v ery quickly for me tonight.

WWAJC-meant to also add that it could also help to disuade you from buying clutter like me hence saving you money too!

A good all rounder me thinks.

alicet · 21/01/2010 21:27

Been reading this week but not replying as been pretty shattered - on cal lat the weekend and a couple of late nights out with a friend who is moving away . She will be near York though so if we manage to sort a meetup then might drag her along - she has an Oct baby too as well as one 14 months older!

WWAJC house looks lovely. Nice and clean, neutral decor, lovely garden for Anya among other bonuses! Can understand you feeling its a backwards step but if you are happier there then it isn't at all - a very positive forwards step! In time you will be able to move onwards and upwards on the property ladder but renting makes sense now while you make sure that this is 100% what you want. Muppets suggestions are fab too. Really sorry that its come to this but from reading you other thread I think you are making the right move. I also would have thought it wouldn't come as too big a shock to your dh? Thinking of you xxx

TLES it was you who brought this onto the thread not NC. And I have always wondered why you didn't just call or text her - don't need an internet connection for that

Floria operation no boobs sounds to be going well! Nice one

Sorry to everyone else - can't remember all of the other things you were talking about but I am thinking of you all! Will try to post more frequently as you are being so chatty at the moment it is a nightmare to remember what is happening when I have been reading but not posting over the past few days!

muppetgirl · 21/01/2010 21:30

am still loving 'operation no-boobs!'

I think that should be the new 'possed!'

alicet · 21/01/2010 21:31

NC meant to say if you think you have an ulcer then you need some omeprazole / lansoprazole as this will often heal it. Think (but not certain) that they are available over the counter. If not could get from your GP. They may have a different name over the counter but the type of drug you want is a 'proton pump inhibitor'. If you took it for about 6 weeks and then either got recurrent symptoms or your symptoms weren't settling then be advisable to see GP to get referred for an endoscopy (telescope exam of your tummy that you may have had before if you have been previously diagnosed with an ulcer) Hope that helps!

alicet · 21/01/2010 21:31

Hello muppet!

muppetgirl · 21/01/2010 21:37

hi Alice

Dalrymps · 21/01/2010 21:54

WWAJC - I didn't take offence, please don't think that Was just trying to make you feel better that if 3 (soon to be 4!) fit in our house then you should be nice and comfortable just the 2 of you

Commotion here again, fil got home from hosp last night and has been tired but ok. Mil phoned to say he had 'indigestion' about an houe ago and could dh go and get him some gaviscon... Anyway dh just called to say the ambulance is there and they're taking him back to hospital as they called nhs direct and any chest pain has to be investigated, especially with how ill he's been . He was so glad to be home...

Alice - Hi! Sorry you've been shattered, don't worry about not keeping up with posts, i'm not doing too well at that and I don't even work! Nice to have you back posting more often anyway

Muppet - Not really got any tips on sleeping through either. Dylan is a good sleeper but I feel this is nothing to do with us and everything to do with luck

I'd just say to encourange putting him down to sleep when sleepy but not asleep to build a habbit of self settling for the future. Does he have a certain toy/blanket thingy that he's attached to? I think I remember you saying you didn't really want to encourange that but Dylan has a soft cat that he has slept with from quite early on, it just lives in his cot and he cuddles it there but doesn't really take it out and about, maybe something like that would be a comfort when he wakes? Sure someone will come along with better advice soon.

alicet · 21/01/2010 22:05

Dal so sorry to hear fil on his way back He looked great when i saw you all at the weekend. Right though to investigate any chest pain - it will be an easy matter to exclude serious problems in hospital so hopefully it won't be long. Tell him I was asking for him x

Dalrymps · 21/01/2010 22:12

Ah thanks alicet, i'm not that surprised, he seemed tired today and a bit fed up when we popped in to see him and he'd had a shower and a bath (usually goes in the shower if he has pain or a headache). They were umming and ahhing over his platelet count when they discharged him yesterday so I think they just want to check him out. Will pass on your regards

NeedCoffee · 21/01/2010 22:14

Dal-really sorry to hear about fil hope it's something silly like indigestion!

Alice-no way am I having endoscopy, yeuch! Not had one before, GP just gave me meds and it cleared up after a while so not actually definate, but it helped at the time, that was about 9 years ago though, DD1 was a baby and OMG she will be 10 this year, how old does that make me feel! Stomach pain seems to be easing off anyway, hopefully it will stay gone as it is not welcome.

I'm off to bed now as at college in morning, was going 30 mins ago but just had to test DDs 'just dance' wii game out-and thats me shattered now only did 2 dances

NeedCoffee · 21/01/2010 22:16

Dal-didn't mean indigestion is silly, just meant hope it is something not serious
