Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Debs75 · 23/07/2009 23:12

We have had such a terrible week, not my ideal start to the holidays.
DP is still pretty wiped out from the asthma so we are staying in and he is resting. ON TUesday night DS decided that he wouldn't sleep, just shout and kick theings around his bedroom. It was 2am before I got to sleep as he kept waking Robyn. At 4am DP took him downstairs to try and keep the noise down. When we woke at 8am he was happily playing on the computer afterhaving no sleep at all
DP spent most of yesterday nodding off and getting a few mins sleep but DS was not tired at all. HE finally dropped off after tea at 6pm and for the first time ever he slept through till 8am this morning.
Tonight he is still not asleep and still a bit noisy so we are praying we are not having a repeat of tuesday.

Debi We were wondering if we should get some tamiflu through the new system 'just in case' Is that wrong? They are dealing with thousands of calls so if you were really sick with it by time you gor through and got someone to pick it up for you it would be too late for it to do any good.
Then again maybe they are having thousands of calls because everyone is stocking up.

My cousin is having her ds christened in October and I am taking the girls. It is all the way down in Portsmouth and means an overnight stay or two. I can't wait as it will be a little break for us.
Is anyone else getting their LO's christened?

Hopefully · 24/07/2009 07:17

I think that there are lots of reasons not to get tamiflu fraudulently. It's going to be really nasty if there's a massive shortage over the winter (which there probably will be if anything worse than the best case scenario happens and people keep getting it now and taking it at the first sign of a snotty nose), and children and old people can't get it in winter because we all took it for our babies now. Tamiflu is also needed for the normal seasonal flu, which people also die of.

Once the madness dies down a bit, the phone line won't be as busy, and they've got a couple of months to improve the system before the worst of the winter flu sets in, so waiting times shouldn't be as horrendous.

Hopefully · 24/07/2009 08:17

interesting data about tamiflu discussed here

Ponymum · 24/07/2009 08:39

I am inclined to agree with hopefully, much as my instinct to protect my own young tells me otherwise. Although I should say this is based on trusting that if DD really did need it later there is no way they would not provide it pronto to a baby. That situation could never arise - it would be unthinkable.

DD LOVES melon! She ate some with breakfast, lunch AND dinner yesterday. Found this out by accident as the neighbours gave us one as they had a surplus. (Neighbour sent her husband to do the shopping, saying "buy 4 lemons". He heard "buy 4 melons"! It never occurred to him to think, this is strange, why would we need 4 melons?)

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/07/2009 09:07

pmsl at 4 melons!!

Please please please don't stockpile Tamiflu. There will be enough to go around if people only get it when they need it. Nevermind the whole debate about whether it's actually worth taking.

starlight - knowing you are such a lover of Immunofortis , I was wondering if you've seen the latest regarding Aptamil follow-on and the Advertising Standards Agency's ruling? I will copy and paste onto here if you haven't.

DebiTheScot · 24/07/2009 09:16

Thanks for telling me off. I knew I was naughty but just had that 'oh I can save £7 if I get it now' thought. I won't really get it.
I was talking to my mum the other night about the flu jab and we decided that all children under 5, all teachers, nursery staff and childminders and all 'at risk' adults should get it automatically as soon as they decide it works.

My ds1 gets lemons and melons muddled up all the time. But he's 3!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/07/2009 09:31

Aren't all prescriptions for 16 and under free anyway?

becaroo · 24/07/2009 11:22

Debs - Toby was christened when he was 4 months old...lovely service with all our family and our best friends as god parents

I agree with Hopefully re: tamiflu...as a person with a dh and ds1 with asthma and a baby I am trying very hard not to panic about it and trying to think positive thoughts that if they get it may be a mild case......

becaroo · 24/07/2009 11:24

..btw...uploaded some new photos of the boys on my facebook page...check my lovely lads out!!!!

notcitrus · 24/07/2009 14:47

GPs should be able to prescribe Tamilflu and tell you which pharmacy in your borough is the designated stockist (in our area, sensibly, it's the one open until midnight 365 days a year)

Went to a picnic with A's nursery today - great fun until we got rained off. He went on a swing and enjoyed being cuddled by two of the workers who will be in his room, both of whom seem lovely. He has proper settling-in next week. I still don't have a project to work on - the two I'm hoping for haven't got back to me. Had another 3 refuse to consider me because of working part-time though...

Week after next we are having a Proper Holiday, down at the ILs but pretending it's a self-catering cottage. Hopefully SIL will babysit one night so we can go for dinner - anyone know a fab place to eat near Bournemouth/New Forest? Pub lunches would also be good.

Hopefully · 24/07/2009 15:10

I know a really awful indian in Lymington... Food poisoning guaranteed! Not what you're after?

Double LOL at four melons! T also loves them - given a chance he will easily see off a melon in 24 hours.

DebiTheScot · 24/07/2009 15:36

me and ds1 have just been canoeing. Was really good fun. We got off the water just minutes before a HUGE thunderstorm.
DS2 is at the childminders. He's doing 3 days over the summer holidays there on his own so that me and ds1 can do fun things like that. He was funny this morning before we went out. Got so excited that he could play with all the toys with small bits that he didn't know what to play with first!

Kagey · 24/07/2009 16:22

Debi that sounds like a great day out!

Carrie enjoy your break away and hope the train journey runs smoothly.

My friend who I had lunch with on Saturday has swine flu and I must admit I have been checking E's temperature a couple of times a day - she thinks it's quite funny. I have a little sore throat but nothing else so I hope I am being paranoid My friend started feeling unwell on Tuesday and she thinks she picked it up on Saturday night whilst out clubbing.

Meglet · 24/07/2009 18:46

hello all, I'm back from hospital and convalescing in my bed. The operation went well, although my consultant said he had to unpick my bladder from my cervix - I had lots of post cs abdominal adhesions- boak! The very clever anaesthetist used a spinal block and only a small amount of GA so my pain has been almost non existent (only taken paracetamol + ibruprofen!) and I haven't felt too wiped out, although I was in bed for 48 hours on a drip, wound drain and catheter. I have to do almost nothing for 2 weeks then take it easy until my 6 week check up, at which point I can start to get active again.

My family have said the dc's have been fine while I've been away. They're away until sunday morning so I have lots of time to rest and get settled again. Its so quiet not having them in the house.

IMO What a nightmare with the wedding . Hope you find a peaceful solution to it.

ponymum you have to do a Grand Birthday Garden Opening for your dd's birthday present, with a big pink ribbon she can 'cut'.

I'm so excited at not having to do anything . I need to catch up on TV while I can. I can't get things off shelves or do cooking or washing. The garden can just about look after itself, although the runner beans need picking by someone. Once I feel a little better I'll start doing boring jobs like sorting paperwork out, wooo hoo!

Pacita · 24/07/2009 19:15

Welcome bak meglet! Really happy to hear the operation went well. And VERY jealous at your having to do nothing, although I know I shouldn't and that you need the rest. Make sure you do not get sudden cabin fever and start straining yourself, though - that's the kind of thing I'd probably do.

Don't stockpile on tamiflu, ladies - you are vert likely to not need it, and you'll feel bad if it's sitting on a cupboard while you know that someone else could have done with it. And I do think that the concerns to do with resistant strains are very serious - there are just too many of us to control or ensure a responsible use of the drug, so resistant mutations are almost inevitable.

Digi Whoa! two nights in a row??? What did you do?

Diego has woken up at five in the morning two nights in a row. I fed him back to sleep. I am a bit gutted, as I had phased out night feedings 2 months ago. . I just gave in because he's been coughing at night, and I don't want to not comfort him. I hope this passes and he goes back to his routine...

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 24/07/2009 19:31

Glad to hear you're feeling a well as you can Meglet. Make sure you do take things easy

Pacita, M had 3 early wakings on the trot this week, which he hasn't done for months. I htink it was teeth and he hasn't done it again since. So don't worry, whatever is causing it, it will pass.

DebiTheScot · 24/07/2009 19:38

Glad to hear your op went well and you're not in much pain meglet. Enjoy the peace while it lasts.

Wish I hadn't mentioned tamiflu now. I'd never have actually got it, only thought about it. The way I wrote that post did make it sound like I might have though, I can see that.

Hopefully · 24/07/2009 22:32

Debi you've made everyone think you're a tamiflu crook!

Welcome back Meglet! Glad you're feeling not too awful and you get a teeny bit of rest before having the DCs returned to you.

Have nearly finished the blanket for my friend's baby - I want to go and meet him! She's been having some minor BFing drama and had a couple of crappy nights, and it really brought the memories of the hideous newborn stage flooding back! Suddenly feeling a bit less broody...

Debs75 · 24/07/2009 23:11

Don't worry Debi we were thinking the same thing. ME and DP have quite bad asthma plus with a baby the thought of us all getting flu is scary. I think there will be people stockpiling it up I just hope they don't use it for a sniffle. Maybe they should vaccinate qt risk groups which would make most people feel better.
Robyn is another melon lover, also pineapple is a big hit.

Glad you are back home Meglet enjoy the rest before the DC's come home.

Meglet · 25/07/2009 09:16

debi it crossed my mind whether to get tamiflu now, instead of waiting. But I won't. I'm going to try and boost the dc's immune system with plenty of garlic, super smoothies and brocolli. At least its the summer hols so we don't need to be inside at so many toddler groups, the dc's have gone to see thomas the tank engine today .
I haven't even been home for a day and I'm bored already . I think I'll do my eyebrows, they are a bit Liam Gallagher-y.

barnpot · 25/07/2009 11:13

Hi all sorry not been here for a while, els is doing well fingers crossed, touch wood, and rubbing my rabbits foot, elli's fits have stopped again, but i'm prepared for them to come back. His development is also coming on he has mastered roling over and he loves doing it so he can try and make his escape by 'crawling' which consists of him pushing his chest along the floor, legs going like mad but arms left by his side. he just laughs and squeals when he does this. he'll get there we've said when he masters the sitting balance and back strength he'll be straight onto walking which he dose now if we steady his top half.
anyway thats all for the mo will update again soon x

ninja · 25/07/2009 11:30

ninja Nothing too serious I hope? x

meglet glad you are home and doing so well...get some wine and a good dvd and relax! x

digitalgirl · 25/07/2009 20:17

meglet rest up!

barnpot great to hear e doing so well.

ninja hope you had a good holiday and the family emergency isn't too serious.

leonie if you're still lurking, I hope this next year gets easier for you. It's got to, hasn't it?

Well ds's snot seems to be never ending. Poor thing has a sore nose from me wrestling with him trying to stem the flow. He's been coughing like a smoker in the mornings too. And on occasion has had a mild temperature which we've blasted with Calpol. He's also teething which can't be helping.

Dh and I have been re-planting some of the plants we saved before doing up the garden. Well I've mainly been supervising whilst holding ds who must weigh 2 stone by now, he's so heavy! We really really need a playpen.

We also had a minor breakthrough with feeding today. Ds actually picked up some chicken pieces out of a bowl and fed himself. This is a huge improvement from tipping the bowl upside down and sweeping everything off the table, then climbing up onto the table and sweeping off the bits he missed.

Meglet · 25/07/2009 23:12

digital you could try a little baby swing for your ds in the garden. It will stop him trying to do something silly but still allow him to be out there and for you to get on with some gardening. I wish I'd got hold of a second hand one for dd so she can watch me and ds when we are out there.

Apparently the dc's had a good time seeing Thomas today, although my dad reckons ds was a bit freaked out because Thomas was big instead of little like he is on tv!
