Naaty, all NHS staff have just received an e-mail about the flu as they are setting up a new pandemic service next week. In amongst it all it says:
It remains the case that those people identified as being at greater risk of serious complications, including all children under one year old, will be advised to contact their GP.
In the meantime, if you are concerned that a friend, relative or colleague has swine flu, you should advise them to:
· Stay at home
· Check their symptoms as soon as possible on www.nhs.uk or
· Call the Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513513 to hear the latest advice
· If they have taken these steps and are still concerned, call NHS Direct or their GP for advice on next steps, so that their GP can prescribe antivirals if necessary, ideally within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms and
· Advise them not to go to A&E unless they are seriously ill.
If you do experience symptoms, you can help yourself by staying at home, following the advice above, resting, drinking plenty of fluids and taking over the counter flu remedies to relieve symptoms. If your condition worsens you should contact your GP.
A sustained temperature of 38 or more will mean you need to ring the GP - but you would anyway. Have you got a thermometer?
Don't panic. You will be priotised if there are any problems.
