A friend of a friend was telling me about their potty training exerience -- their daughter is almost two, and they were very gung ho. Put potties on every floor in their house, and every time Tara even looked like doing something, they'd pick her up, race to the nearest potty and plunk her down. Apparently it got to the point where every time she'd walk or be carried by one of the potties, she'd start to cry! Poor little one...but I can see myself doing the exact same thing!

Am feeling very out of sorts with myself and D we were supposed to go to Strasbourg today, but have backed out at the last minute. Rhys has been suffering rather terribly but in a completely unpredictable and random fashion from silent reflux, and it's led to some horrible feeding tries. Poor little man is hungry, tries to nurse and then screams the house down. We've been giving him Gaviscon for the past two days and haven't really seen an effect yet (but we've also been erring on the side of caution in the dosages his paed prescribed double the amount indicated in the packaging!) except for some constipation (just what we need). Anyway, I'd just about resolved to go ahead and try the trip and DP said this morning he just couldn't face it. So not worth going if he's going to be miserable but I hate living a life ruled by fear, as it were. Sigh.

And if that weren't bad enough, I'd booked in a lovely massage last night which turned out to be a Thai massage which apparently involves lying mostly on one's stomach and having ungodly amounts of pressure put on various points -- so my boobs are KILLING me now. How ironic would it be to get mastitis from a massage??

Sorry for the mememe -- just had to vent. Rhys actually napping, so now I can catch up on all the posts (and find out who Cath Kingston is)!

lizziemun · 19/06/2009 14:46

Corgi

Thats sounds horrible. If the little girls not ready then all they are doing is upsetting her. (sorry to rude)

With dd1 (and what i'm doing with dd2 {22mths})i just leaving the potty in the toilet and she wants to sit on it when 'were' going to the toilet so she gets used to it.

In the last 2 days dd2 has been asking to sit on it. So i take down her pullups and she sits on the potty. She hasn't done anything yet, but she going the right direction.

DD1 was dry day and night within a week when she decided she was ready.

Sorry you don't feel upto going to Strasbourg today, I hope you have nice weekend dispite of this.

Oh Cath Kidston is a designer who design 'chintzy' clothes/assc

corgikelly · 19/06/2009 17:07

Quick question: would it be possible to have thrush on my nipples without Rhys having any symptoms? Since last night I've had sort of tingling/sharp pains that are pretty consistent (nothing to do with nursing/latching).

I'm inclined to chalk it up to that d*mn massage (too much pressure on the ducts?) but want to rule out the obvious...

23 guests, slick? You're a madwoman! I would have retreated to the back bedroom with a bottle of gin and a straw. Pictures of the croc tail, please.

meep, are you ever able to get to someone like an osteopath? Mine works wonders on the sore neck and hips that seem to be the nemesis of mums lugging ungainly babies about.

Many, many sympathies re piles, law, jolly and jolly. They were the bane of my pregnancy and I'm still leery they'll return.

meep · 19/06/2009 19:07

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........feet up & glass of wine (dh doing bedtime stories - I can hear the gruffalo over the monitor!). It's strange, even though I'm on maternity leave I still get that Friday feeling

corgi yes, I think you can get thrush on your nips without Rhys showing symptoms - though you did say that he was screaming when feeding so maybe he does have thrush as I think it can hurt them when they feed?

An osteopath sounds lovely, but for now the wine will have to suffice.

lizzie we had a disaster with pullups - dd1 is quite narrow and she just leaked out of them. But will try the idea of just leaving teh potty out to see what she'll do.

For tonight our breakthrough is for dd1 to have a bath without the bath support ring she has clung onto for ever. Next step - bathing the 2 dd's at the same time

corgi all the friends of mine who tried to travel with their firstborn in the early months reported that it was incredibly stressful and they wished they hadn't even tried - so don't beat yourself up about cancelling your trip.

boobz I bought my dh the same thing on his first fathers day but in socks - black pint pair for him and wee half pint white socks for baby - so sweet.

You get yorkies for going to church wheely .... tempting! You'll be grinning away this year I bet!

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 19/06/2009 20:05

ooh pour me some of that wine meep.... I haven't worked in over 4 years and I still get the friday feeling !!

Yes Yorkie bars for going to church - they have to do something to draw the punters in these days. At Easter they had an easter egg hunt and Dd1 spent the whole service saying in the top of her voice 'now is it time for the easter egg hunt' . You'd have thought that having a school attached was enough to bring people flocking .

Corgi - we went to a wedding last weekend and had a family room booked in a nearby hotel which we cancelled at the last minute and decided to drive home as we decided it was much less stressful. Hope you have a nice weekend anyway and that your nips sort themselves out.

Boobz - not sure I am seeing the right thing on your link - I'm getting bean bags (incidentally that's a great help as I need to get dd1 a bean bag, have been promising for ages, and they are really funky and machine washable).

lizziemun · 19/06/2009 20:25

meep

No chance of pullups leaking with her. she is shall we solid and has very chunky thighs. Mind you she couldn't stop 'a pig in a alley' with her legs .

Ok now for the bad mummy of the day award. While dd's were eating their dinner, i was going to put Robbie in his play gym, but twisted my ankle and dropped him. Lucklier mum live 2mins around the corner so i got dd1 to get me the phone and i rang her to check robbie was ok. Which he is but i feel so bad. I have never dropped any of my babies.

Boobz · 19/06/2009 20:31

Am rubbish at links Wheely - it's basically a t-shirt for DH with the crown symbol that you see on pint glasses, and the word PINT across the top, and a matching mini t-shirt for Penny with HALF PINT written on it.

Sitting here with a bottle of Stella and that Friday feeling. DH not home from work yet so am sneaking in an episode of Grey's Anatomy from last night's Sky Plus.

Another question (I'm always asking questions, I know, sorry)... do any of your babies have eczema? It runs in my family (although I've never had it, but my baby niece on my brother's side has it horribly) and now I'm worried Penelope is developing it. It might just be heat rash or a rash from all her dribbling / sick (I hope!) but I have a feeling it's more than that. What's your experience of it and what can I do to help?

Wheelybug · 19/06/2009 20:38

Aw. v cute ! Must be my computer or something because Meep could obviously see it. I did think a child's beanbag was an odd pressie for a grown man .

One of my friends was telling me she'd bought her dh a book for him to write his life memories in for the children. What a lovely pressie I thought. She asked me what I had bought DH. Sheepishly I told her - a dvd of the dukes of hazzard. Mind you, it hasn't arrived from amazon yet. Luckily a book I ordered as well has but thats not quite so fun !

laumiere · 19/06/2009 20:45

Boobz I had it as a baby and mum swears by oatmeal baths. Put 2-3 tablespoons of rough-milled porridge oats in the leg of a pair of tights, tie off and chuck in bath as you run the water (the water goes a sort of milky colour). She also swore by switching from baby oil to olive oil post-bath.

meep pass the bottle? Am all alone until Mon when DH gets 3 days off and starting to get a bit weepy about how I'll cope when DS1's nursery breaks up in July.

On the plus side Gabe is loving his solids, he bounces up and down in his chair with a big grin whenever he sees his pot and spoon . Top combos so far are carrot/sweet potato and apple/apricot (I make up a batch then freeze them into ice cube trays, 1 cube is a portion).

Missmodular · 19/06/2009 20:54

Hi all,

Had to post re potty training - I've been trying different things to get DD1 (2.6) to go on the potty/toilet as she was making great strides a few months ago but seems to have lost interest since the birth of her little sister.

Anyway, I promised her a sweet [BAD mummy emoticon] if she did anything in the toilet, but she couldn't and then got really upset about not getting her treat. Watching a small child on the toilet wailing 'I want to do a wee-wee!' in a pitiful voice is as heartbreaking as it is frustrating - so I WON'T be recommending that method to anyone

Anyway, hurray for Friday! Can I have some wine too Meep?

Slickbird · 19/06/2009 21:34

Evening all! Well, we went to the dentist today and it was the weirdest thing; we walked in, literally just into the reception and DD2 started whimpering. She just knew! I wonder if she could sense something with me - anticitpating what she would be like. I was trying to be all, 'The dentist is just going to count your teeth and look Eilidh will be getting hers checked too...(and isn't this fun??). Er no. Cue: Waaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! And clinging to mummy like a little tree monkey. I mean, how did she know?? Anyway, as a result of the greetin' the dentist was able to check her teeth she's doing fine. Although I have to my last wisdom tooth removed (oh well, all the wisdom I had went when I gave birth for the third time...) and then he is going to have me properly fitted for a mouth guard to help with the teeth-clenching at night. It's all free for the moment too so that's good. I'm still getting sore heads, neck and shoulders from it and def notice a difference when I use something, but the other things are just not comfy.

Anyhoo, rambling.(Again.)

Wheely & Corgi I agree about thinking very hard about travelling with LO's. We had thought about going to Wales this year again to see DH's family and then we decided 'Sod it.' It's just not worth the hassel. So we're just going to go on day trips as that will be hard enough.

Corgi Will take photos of crocs tail over the weekend and post soon. I think you'll be really (un) impressed.

Sorry to hear about your boobs. Hope it's nothing. Could be thrush (check Rhys tongue too - sure you have already) but if the sharp pains are going deep into your breast then it could be mastitis. Hope it's neither.

I'd love an osteopath as I am trying to find a bit of my body that doesn't ache at the moment. I think maybe my left elbow is ok....

Lizzie The same thought eventually occurred to me whilst toilet training DD1 - why not just put the potty IN the bathroom and try and get them to go there to do it - I mean, eventually you want them to go on the toilet anyway and not crap in the corner of the living room. I appreciate there will be times where you whip the potty under there bum if they are starting to go elsewhere but I think it helps get the whole toilet message across easier. She sees me going to the toilet all the time (no peace) and wonders what I'm up to!

Boobz Could be a heat rash - FB has it - from heat but also from constantly bringing up milk and his clothes getting wet under his neck. Really don't know what exezema would look like when appearing tho'.

RE: Father's day, haven't got a bloody thing yet - as I mentioned before it was his birthday last week and he got enough then.
Bah humbug. Och, I might get him something. A poke in the eye with a sharp stick can always be arranged!

Slickbird · 19/06/2009 21:53

P.S. I'll raise my glass tomorrow night as am too darn tired to drink tonight.

I hear also, for toilet training boys, a good method is to put a ping-pong ball in the toilet and get them to aim for it!

I remember with DD1 I used to say to her, 'Right, where has that wee wee gone? Do you think it's hiding. Come out, come out wherever you are!' And so subsequently she would always say, 'Come out, come out wherer 'oo are!'.

Worked most of the time. (Of course, this is once you actually mangage to GET them to the toilet!!)

after all my chat about travelling with babies being stressful, we are off on our hols in a couple of weeks.......driving.......ferries.....house sharing! Are we mad?!

Loving all teh toilet training tips - thank you ladies!

boobz dd1 has eczema. We have been through every cream imaginable. The best one for her is Aveeno (similar to laumiere as it is oat based) and has a bath oil as well - if you have a decent GP they'll give you it on prescription.

Best thing is to cut back on baths and clothes washing. Rosie isn't showing signs and I think it is because she is not bathed religiously EVERY night like dd1 was and I don't have the time to wash her clothes if the sloightest speck of dirt gets on them

and lots and lots of moisturiser whenever you can - it really helps - just slather it on at every nappy change or whenever. I suffer to and have to do thios as well.

Hi nahui!

Not much advice except to maybe try a different formula? DS1 always drank more Cow and Gate than SMA.

Also (again) great LO name, but then I would say that, it's mine!

Went to bed about 9pm last night, briefly woken by Gabe at 3.30 and 5.30 (mostly he was chatty rather than wanting something), still knackered this morning. May need to go back to doc if this carries on, last time I was like this my B12 levels had plummeted....

Also, can someone pop over to small business ads and bump my CV ad please? It looks a bit crap if is always me!

meep · 20/06/2009 08:50

Hah! I am still at my folks as I stayed last night to get some sleep. Am about to go home now, but DH just called; FB slept from 8.30pm til 7.30am last night! Typical - whilst I'm glad, I do wonder if it will last. Although it seems the clear answer is that DH needs to get rid of his wife if he wants the kids to sleep.

I reckon he snores sleeps through a lot that I don't tho.

Welcome back Nahui.

laumiere · 20/06/2009 18:44

Am doing the cat on a hot tin roof thing, as Gabriel normally goes down at 7ish and tonight mysteriously dropped off at 5.30 and is still asleep! I'm too scared to start anything in case he wakes up!

Just looking for someone to watch G for 4-6 hours a week in the summer hols so I can spend more time with DS1, lovely DH crunched the finances after I burst into tears earlier and said I was feeling swamped.

mdavza · 20/06/2009 18:50

Hallo Nahui, hope your lo etas better soon, although it still sounds sort of normal to me? If she wakes up that much at night, can't you tank her up before bedtime? Not that I'm any kind of expert...!

Corgi We were thinking of arranging a trip with lo, but I still don't have the guts. Mostly we don't want to risk having a baby that screams his head of, waking other guests - not that he does this at home, but you never know what might happen in a strange place. We're going to start with day trips, to give King B some time to adjust...

Laumiere How does one bump you?!

Haven't bought DH anything for father's day, bad, bad woman. I'll think of something. Hmmmm. Today we've broken major records, ds slept in the morning for almost 2 hours on his own (believe me, it feels like a miracle!) and then we took him out for the first time ever in his new cycle trailer. We spent a lot of money on this thing, and luckily he loved it. We're really into cycling and I am starting to feel like a fat slob, and it was wonderful. B loved it! He slept in it, for longer than 30 mins, I was ecstatic! And then, when we came back, he was overstimulated or something, because he cried hysterically for a looong time before his nap, and eventually I just shoved the bottle in. Bad, bad mom, teaching my lo bad habits. Seriously, I could just sometimes throttle myself for worrying so much a bout 'bad' habits and accidental parenting, meanwhile, what else do you do, if nothing else works, to calm a hysterical baby? I'm v sensitive (sob) and hate it when he cries. Sigh. And now he's still asleep, and I'll have to wake him for his bedtime feed and bath.
I'll have a beer tonight. Cheers!

laumiere · 20/06/2009 19:35

mdavza You comment on the thread saying 'bump'. It keeps the thread in the lists.

mdavza · 20/06/2009 20:10

Laumiere Bumped. Will forward your details to my sister in law who's having a hard time finding a job, sure her cv needs an update. Cheers!

Slickbird · 20/06/2009 21:12

Evening all! Wine now firmly in hand and my God I've earnt it today! Just spend 7 hours SOLID changing the girls' rooms around, what a job! Both seem equally pleased (infact positively ecstatic) which is good as the eldest is moving into a smaller room (just for a while until we renovate the bathroom) but she likes a change and I think she feels it's a bit like a teenager's cosy bedroom all to herself.(Phew). Then DD2 was just squealing with excitement when she saw her big room with lots of her toys and a drawing/painting table etc. Little does she know that her little brother will be moving in in a couple of months! But it gives her a chance to adjust. Although saying that, she fell asleep within minutes so that's good.

I'm hoping FB has another good night tonight as I really only had last night to rest and other than that it's been full on. DH is working tomorrow so that's me til next sat! Oh well, still not as tough as Laumiere I think!

Will go and search for your thread Laum

laumiere · 20/06/2009 21:36

Thanks for the bumps!

Well ladies, Gabriel is still happily asleep (in his day clothes and socks) so maybe (maybe!) he will just have an extra long sleep and not wake at 3am all perky!

DH is out on the piss tonight so I'm spoiling myself with homemade scones .

madremia · 20/06/2009 22:28

Would just like to say hello! and ask if it is too late for me to join? Ive only just found mumsnet and would love to talk with other mums. Elliot arrived 2nd March and he is my 4th, in addition to Elliot I have dd age 15, ds1 age 11 and ds2 age 3. I am from uk but living in spain at the mo and dont have much contact with other mums with babies (too many retirees where i live lol.) so would be thrilled to share the ups and downs with u all.

Im not bf now and lo is not sleeping too well at the moment, so would be great to get some tips.
