Here's a thread to make you all laugh!

OP posts:
KSal · 23/06/2009 22:16

CSWS that is very funny indeed!

Honeymoonmummy · 23/06/2009 22:21

Hey all. I've been out for the day today with DH and PIL's. Ended up driving 1.5 hours both ways and having a cheese toastie as spent rest of time BFing Poppy in car and then resting her afterwards No way can I BF in front of FIL, before you ask.

MM, I'm really sorry to hear you're so low. I'm on work laptop in bed so can't send FB message but I'm sure you'll get something more positive from the NCT tomorrow, keep fighting! x

Well done on teeth Star and MyJob!

I haven't read properly sorry, so apologies if I missed something.

When I hold a toy in my teeth with Poppy on my knee she grabs it then hands it back to my mouth, it's so cute She's really come on in the last few weeks.

aubergenie · 23/06/2009 22:26

MM- Spoke to my friend (Quite senior manager at large London teaching hospital) and told her about you. She had a couple of ideas. Apologies if you?ve already tried this. Firstly, she said you should go straight to the top. If you just call Pals, you?re probably getting someone junior who is just spouting their standard line, rather than someone who makes decisions. She suggests you call them and ask to speak to Head of Nursing (will be someone clinical). If you can?t get Head of Nursing ask for Head of Pals or Head of Complaints. Tell them you?re coming in for an op, you?re breast-feeding your baby and don?t give them an option to say no, just ask them how they?re going to make it possible for you in line with their baby friendly policy.

Have a think about what you will accept. Would you be happy with extended visiting hours so that you can feed M and then she goes home at night? Or do you want her to be able to stay with you? Could your mum or someone stay as well so that she could bring M to you so you can feed her at night?) Apparently most hospitals now have "Hotel accommodation" - kind of family rooms, normally used for children who are in hospital so that the family can stay. This could be an option if they have them.

She said that if you don?t have any success, threaten to go to the PCT, your MP, or the papers. Apparently they hate that and will usually do anything to avoid the bad publicity.

Sorry if this is a bit brusque - S keeps waking up screaming and I keep losing my train of thought. Hope this is helpful in some way.

Marthasmama · 23/06/2009 22:31

Thank you so much Aubergenie and thank your friend for me too! I hope M sleeps for a while tomorrow as I am going to need to do lots of phoning! I get too distracted when she's around and say stupid things & get all muddled!

Honeymoonmummy · 23/06/2009 22:45

That sounds positive Aubergenie/ MM

aubergenie · 24/06/2009 08:19

You're welcome MM. Good luck. Hope M sleeps for you.

I think S must be having another growth spurt. He was so restless last night I brought him in with me, and he nothing but feed, feed, feed.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/06/2009 08:45

Could still be teething Aubergenie. Dd used to feed constantly when she was because the sucking helped to ease the discomfort.

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 24/06/2009 09:02

I think M is teething too as she woke up loads last night. She is pulling at her ears loads but they don't seem sore and she hasn't got a temperature. I know that tooth pain can defer to your ears so I am wondering if the two are related.

I have received an e-mail from my local branch of NCT and they are not impressed. The local co-ordinator is going to try and sort something! Apparently the hospital is trying to work towards baby friendly status. In addition I am going to formulate a plan from all the suggestions I have received from lovely MNers!

aubergenie · 24/06/2009 10:03

I really hope they sort it out for you MM. Is it Medway Hospital?

Marthasmama · 24/06/2009 10:08

Thank you Aubergenie - It's Medway Maritime Hospital, they had Baby Friendly status but let it lapse and are working towards it again now. Don't think they're doing a very good job though!

aubergenie · 24/06/2009 10:28

Well hopefully that will work in your favour as they won't want the adverse publicity. Keep us posted won't you.

jenwa · 24/06/2009 11:46

mm sorry you having to deal with all this, how crap! Hopefully they can sort it for you and I totally agree with going down the route of telling them you are BF and how they will accomodate it

csws my HV told me to peel grapes, there was that child who died from choking from one so I peel and cut them in half, dds playgroup also make you cut them in half too as risk of them getting stuck in throat. DD did however give P a whole skinned one the other day and she did suck it until the skin was stuck to the roof of her mouth. I was at dd1 and slightly panicked at DD2!

P just had audio test and all fine, she heard the high frequencies I never and they keeping my two in the loop for me to keep me reasurred

Have a cold and hayfever so feeling poo! Need to get in the garden and sort the weeds but it makes me feel 10 times worse but it looks horrible!

jenwa · 24/06/2009 11:46

csws that thread was funny too

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/06/2009 12:54

There are several children who have died from choking on grapes jenwa, hence I would always cut them for a young child, but peeling is unnecessary and your hv totally over the top for suggesting it (IMO ).

D still hasn't had his newborn hearing screening .

OP posts:
jenwa · 24/06/2009 17:02

how come he has not had hearing test? I bet you are not worried though as I am sure he is doing fine

So is it just me and myjob who peel grapes then? just worried dd will get the skin stuck in her throat but then she eats raisons and they can stick in her mouth!

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/06/2009 18:37

He's been for it 3 times (would have had it in hosp when born but it was a weekend) but they couldn't get a response from one of his ears (only got one from the other on the last attempt).

Raisins not as bad as grapes as it's the grape skin that isn't broken down by saliva if stuck in throat, but other foods are.

OP posts:
star6 · 24/06/2009 20:01

Sounding good MM! I hope that works out for you. Having your mom or someone stay with you to bring M to you in the night sounds like a really good idea, aubergenie.

Is pulling at the ear a teething sign? I vaguely remember someone saying this and it was just mentioned. Q is grabbing and folding over his ear throughout entire BF every single time over the past week. His cheeks get all red and hot, too. Poor guy. The tooth hasn't even completely come out (I don't think, it seems very small compared to teeth I've seen.. how long does it usually take? I can definitely feel it and see it when I pull his lower lip down.

I missed the 8 month check. It was on the 11th of June and I just forgot with work and all. Do they tell you off for this? Just wondering if it's worth calling to reschedule.

wow at grape peeling myjob I just don't give grapes yet. I probably should He eats half blueberries, half raspberries and chunks of strawberries though. And chunks of peanut butter sandwiches So long choking stage! Thank god. Dont have to puree anymore. Glad that's over.

Marthasmama · 24/06/2009 20:18

Star - M is gouging at her ear so much that she tore a big hole in it last night. I picked her up and there was a big pool of blood on my feeding cushion. I panicked at first as I thought that maybe her ear was bleeding from an infection but then found the tiny cut she'd made. Silly girl! She is definitely teething. She has had hardly any food all day but has nursed and nursed and nursed. Plus she has been really tired and grumpy! But worst of all......Tonight I really wished we had been using disposable nappies...Ugh to teething poos in reusables!

I'm not having an 8 month check as we are not considered to need one as they have no worries about us. The HV team are so short staffed that they can only do home visits for those who are a bit of a concern. I think I'll have to tell them about my op though and try and get them to check up on DH when he's on his own. I might make M a bubble wrap babygro for when I'm not here.

star6 · 24/06/2009 20:28

lol about bubblewrap babygro!!
We're probably considered in need of one because of the 6 weeks where the midwife kept coming back b/c I'd burst into tears about not being able to bf without pain. ugh! No, actually I think it's just standard here and everyone gets one.
The nappies really are horrid aren't they?
We're still not sleeping through tthe night... or even close to it. We had to lower the cot last night becaus eit was just dangerous when he'd stand up... but he's only in it from 7pm- latest 10pm

Marthasmama · 24/06/2009 20:35

Star - It's just in my area that they are only seeing people who need them. There are only two HVs for five posts!!! I just phone them and talk their ears off instead of having any visits. Everywhere else it is normal to see HVs fairly regularly.

KSal · 24/06/2009 20:52

actually had our 8 month check today, oly a month and a bit late! i wasn't surprised to learn they were happy with Emma's development and i am someone who likes to get a tick in the box!! I would say if you have got a bit of time off it would be worth trying to rearrange it just for the peace of mind angle.... but if you can't i think you could take Q along to a regular baby clinc and chat through any concerns (if you have any)
