Discovered today that DS is sensitive to pineapple. Nursery were giving him a fruit salad and he got a rash all round his mouth (he already has eczema, so we were on the alert for food reactions). Apparently the only thing in the salad that he'd never had before was pineapple, so that must be the culprit!

It had completely cleared up in a few hours though, so at least it's not that bad.

Another tooth has broken through the gum, think he's in a fair bit of pain poor thing

Jojay · 15/05/2009 19:57

Evening all - I realised I hadn't posted for a few days when this thread disappeared from my 'Threads I'm on'

All going well here. I'd wondered about vitamin drops too, and bought some the other day, on the grounds that Ed doesn't have any formula, and as we're BLW, he doesn't eat a whole amount either. I decided just to taste them before I gave them to him and they are DISGUSTING!!! How you are supposed to get them into a baby more than once I have no idea.

So I didn't give them to him and they are sitting in the kitchen doing nothing.

They are Abidec ones btw. They might not all taste so bad.

We had a run of good nights when he slept from 10.30 pm till about 5 am ish, but that hasn't lasted and we've gone back to a 2.30 / 3 am waking the last few nights. We're on economy 7 here nad I was setting the washing machine and dishwasher off overnight and I wondered if it was waking him, so I won't do it tonight - fingers crossed it works

BLW going well, as those on the BLW thread will know ( Rachie, CSWS, you know who you are...........)nad everything else is hunky dory.

Except that it is POURING with rain right now. How am I going to entertain the kids tomorrow, with DH at work, if it's chucking it down???

Strange - our HV mentioned I might want to use filtered water just because the water here is really hard and most people think it tastes horrible (I actually quite like it). We use filtered water for pretty much everything so never really thought about it not being good for babies.

loulou33 · 15/05/2009 20:30

My Hv told me that the vitamin drops are because baby stores of vitamins are used up by then . She also suggested that if still bf at 6 months, you should have them too. I give Joe boots vitamin drops which taste of orange or so ds1 informs me. Joe pulls a face when i give them to him but he swallows them still. I do keep forgetting to give them though...

had a pretty shitty day here - ds1's pre-school nursery (council-run) have hiked his fees from £3 to £8 a session. DS1 uses some of his funded sessions at a private nursery which is far more expensive so he only gets one session free at council one and one paid for by me. I am seriously peed off with them and phoned the council to complain. They told me that they were also shocked at this and would consult legal dept but it was probably out of thier control. The under 3's sessions have only gone up by £1 so i don't see why mine have gone up by £5? I will have to challenge the hatchet faced lovely play leader on monday and i may have to take ds1 out of there. this is a real shame as the kids there are the ones he will go to school with next year...

Then i ordered 2 new car seats from halfords to collect from their nearest store. we set off on 50 mile round trip and get there to find they only have one in stock and its missing the free sunshades for the car windows. I really wanted this one as its dead comfy and is 60% off at the moment. We were kept waiting for 45 mins and the guy says we can only have the sunshades with the pink car seat not the black one. I ask why he can't take them out of the pink box and put in mine and he says this would be fraud - WTF!!!! At this point, we leave....

Ds1 whinged ALL the way home as he was sooo hungry, we were very late having tea so Joe was not hungry for bedtime milk. So i spent 45 mins singing to him to try and get him to eat adn then he was too tired and grumpy. he did in the end after an hour of cajoling but what a lousy day.......

Right off to bang my head off the wall repeatedly and hope that tomorrow is better. sorry for the rant

loulou33 · 15/05/2009 20:31

why is hatchet faced not crossed out - grrrrr bad day bad day bad day

ronshar · 15/05/2009 20:44

I remember the HV's talking about vitamin drops when DD1 was a baby. 9 years ago. As DD1 was formula fed after 12 weeks then I didnt pay much attention! Bad old days of 12 weeks of maternity leave.
I give the girls fish oils, which are miracle workers for skin and behaviour.
I am now a convert to non boiled tap water and or filtered. I shall keep looking for proper scientific papers with regards to why the advice has changed.

CSWS nice shed

DH has said to me, on his way out the door to the pub this evening, that I should get a babysitter and we will go out tomorrow night. I am ashamed to say that I cant really be bothered

Myjob lets hope the rain slows down for you all tomorrow.

Rhian, will my dairy free (except chocolate) diet be giving enough vitamins etc. I do try to get my 5 a day and enough water but it may not be enough to pass through with my milk!

Does anyone give vitamins? Which ones are the best tasting. We already have a non runner, thank you Jojay.

ronshar · 15/05/2009 20:47

Loulou, loads of vitamins in grownup grape juice
Playschools are a licence to print money. Thank the lord DD2 finishes at the end of July, she wants to have a summer holiday same as DD1. Good saves me £300.

RachieW · 15/05/2009 20:50

Hi loulou- sorry you had such a bad day. I'm sending you a virtual glass of wine tonight

Much better day here. Dh and I have finished packing for the holiday more or less. I'm still stressing that we don't have anything but I think we do.

I'll be back in ten days so hope you all have a good nearly two weeks. Hopefully I'll be back with lovely tales of our holiday and not stories of MIL to post on 'Am I Being Unreasonable'

Byeee xx

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/05/2009 21:11

Happy holidays Rachie!

You can't go out tomorrow ronshar - it's Eurovision night!

Pants re nursery loulou. Doesn't sound like it can/should be legal tbh.

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 15/05/2009 21:14

Eurovision night? Sounds like the perfect reason to go out! M is up again at the mo making eyes at her Daddy again so I'll hopefully be back on later.....

ronshar · 15/05/2009 22:00

Have a brilliant holiday Rachie. Try not to throttle your MIL

MM I am with you. I forgot it was Eurovision.
We went to a Eurovision party last year. Luckily I was pregnant so was able to bail out really early and went to my mums. Went back to pick DH up later on. They were all totally legless. Glad I bailed!

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/05/2009 22:10

Bah humbug to the pair of you! I love Eurovision. We are having friends come to watch it and for a sleepover!

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 15/05/2009 22:30

CSWS - I could never watch Eurovision, I love music.

Rachie - Good luck and God bless I'm sure you'll be fine. Just take deep calming breaths, in through the nose out through the mouth.......

I've totally lost track now..... m is finally in bed, only 3 hours later than usual I'm knackered from the constant feeding and resettling. M ate loads of real food today and as a result had loads of milk this evening. She always does this, when she lots of solids she nurses loads. Strange baby. Not giving M vitamins. Ds was on formula from 7 months as I had the same problem Loulou is now having with J. I have no HV which is probably why nobody has mentioned it to me. It seems counter-intuitive to me to give M vitamins when she is getting the milk nature intended for her, especially as children are supposed to have breast milk as a main drink until the age of 2-4. Formula does not occur in nature so it seems strange that it would be superior for babies once the turn 6 months.

Marthasmama · 15/05/2009 22:34

I haven't managed to summon the will to read through all of it but maybe this will shed some light on the vitamin debate.

ronshar · 15/05/2009 23:14

I had a quick scan. Mostly it seems to say give to the mum rather than baby. So will go and get some pregna care again!

Marthasmama · 15/05/2009 23:15

I have loads left over and really should take them for the iron. [silly]

aubergenie · 16/05/2009 08:12

Morning ladies, I am giddy this morning...with sleep! S managed to sleep from bedtime at 7.15, had a big feed at about 10.30, woke at about 3.30 had another big feed. AND I didn't feed him to sleep, he settled himself . Then he woke at 7.15, had a quick feed and is asleep now.

I'd like to think that this is the result of all my hard work with the No Cry Sleep Solution, but I did go out last night on my own for the first time and had two glasses of wine with my food, which is more than I would normally have so that may have something to do with it.

I do feel about a thousand times better just sleeping through some full sleep cycles for a change.

CSWS - How on earth have you managed to spend £40 on the beans already? I was thinking, if you're planning on getting a veg patch next year, you might want to start a compost heap/bin now so you've got lots of lovely compost to put on the garden in the spring.

Rachie - if you haven't left already, hope you have a great time.

Loulou - at that price rise. How on earth can they claim to justify that one?

No vitamins here either. I agree with MM. Plus I eat a balanced diet and loads of veg so I'm not worried.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/05/2009 10:44

Wow aubergenie for great sleep .

£40 on compost, soil, trowel, fork, dibber. Trowel and fork we'd have got anyway, as part of insurance claim for fire.
Composting a good idea, but not sure there's anywhere left for it, as playhouse is where big compost heap used to be.

morning ladies.
i think i'm going mad. i put alex in his cot last night, it's right up beside my bed with the side taken off, so we can cosleep.
i woke up this morning and alex was between dh and i and i have no idea how he got there! dh said he didn't move him and i don't remember waking up last night.

Ekka · 16/05/2009 10:59

We give vitamins (when I remember ) I spoke to my SIL (who was a maternity nurse) about it when we were advised to for dd and she said the main reason was vitamin D deficiency (rickets?) and that especially if it was winter (DD was a June baby) it could be useful unless they got enough sunlight. But she never did with her two & did extended bf with both. So very much a case of 'do as I say, not as I do'

We use the Boots own sugar free vitamins. They are lurid yellow and supposed to taste of orange. I think they are disgusting but dd loves them. Ds isn't so sure & dd keeps trying to nick his helping as well .

I also still take the pregnacare vitamins and osteocare for calcium (they are ok with pregnacare) - can you tell I'm paranoid! But then my diet is sometimes good and sometimes awful depending on how high maintenance the kids are being...

jenwa · 16/05/2009 11:00

Hi all
Sorry computer seems to not like me coming on here! Been slow or not opening MN!!!

Just off to take DD1 to grandmas, need some time out I think, she has been a PITA!!! Sorry, but we were getting somewhere and now she seems to like to push it with me! I have removed her fav toy and am threatening more as she is just not listening, nothing really naughty but meal times are a stress and she wont leave my mums dog alone and keep pulling him along by his hair

Think she needs a day out!

SOrry it is short but DD2 is crying and needs sleep and not been back since waking this am, hopefully she will sleep in car and have a long sleep this afty.

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/05/2009 11:34

Not your computer jenwa. MN has been down a few times.

OP posts:
pepperrabbit · 16/05/2009 12:01

some people had to go and do housework - or play with their children apparently yesterday, it was down for so long!
Says she who should be gardening....

loulou33 · 16/05/2009 13:40

Hiya,

Its a PITA when MN is down - it means i have to do things....anyway i have had my fix for this morning

I don't know how the price rise at nursery can be legal either but i suspect there's nothing that the council or I can do about it. I expect a rpivate nursery to be expensive but not a counil one iyswim. I am going to contact the Care Commission on Monday as I have other concerns about the way the nursery is run. Its very unstructured and chaotic and DS1 has told me that there is lots of hitting and pushing etc. I have witnessed another child pushing children over, the staff doing nothing and then a parent, not connected to this child, taking his hand and calmly telling him off - the staff all watched and did not seem to think this was their job!! I have managed to get him another slot at his private nursery if needed so that DH will still have some time to do work once i go back...

CSWS - you can get a compost bin (the size of a normal household blak bin) from most councils now for a reduced price (about £5) - have you room for that? You don't need a dibber, you have several on your hands already!!!

MM - i think that there has been a change of view about the need for vit d here as there have been more reported cases of vit d deficiency (rickets) in UK this past year or so. Also mums will need to take vitamin b and iron supplements if they are veggie or have very little meat in their diet. Vit B deficiency is quite serious in small children and warning signs ar enot easy to spot iirc. I can't see the harm in giving extra vits but its PITA to remenber most of the time.

Jenwa - hope this afternoon is better with DD - they have ups and downs don't they, ds1's behaviour is ok at the moment but he has bad days too

Heather - may be he rolled over you in the night or crawled there

can't wait for eurovision tonight - come on!!
