I love that word, cloying. It's onomatopoeic because it sounds and feels thick & sticky. I also love 'clotted' for the same reason.
hmm - Butternut squash would be yum, but I somehow doubt you have one lying round. Gina Ford has a good recipe for Root Medley which, as the name suggests, consists of a few root veggies. But what ever you do, don't let it go off. Our fridge broke and we had a batch of it. We took all the stuff out the fridge and the root medley got left by the sink for a little while. When DH found it he nearly threw up and ended up taking the bowl out to the garden and hosing it off from a great distance. I think it was possibly the worst thing I have ever smelled!

Marthasmama · 08/05/2009 09:08

Lozza - That's funny, I look forward to the photos. M is too knitwear catalogue, but she does do big doe eyes really well. She does that blink thing where she opens her eyes wider after the blink. She's such a little tart!

I have been sorting out M's Baby Naming music today. I have found loads of lovely folk music on iTunes, by someone called Martha Tilston. I liked her before M was born so it's not that cheesy

Rhian82 · 08/05/2009 09:19

DS slept well last night, yay! We have found that since we haven't been feeding him at night (though we do give him water so he doesn't get dehydrated) he's been feeding for longer in the day, so he seems to sort himself out to get all the milk he needs.

How much expressed milk does everyone else give in a bottle? DS is at nursery three days a week and they give him two bottles during the day, 150ml each. They say this seems the right amount that he's happy with (and I'd struggle to express more) but I'm always paranoid he's not getting enough. It's so frustrating when you don't know how much they normally take when breastfeeding!

Ooh, and what fromage frais does everyone buy? Haven't given DS any yet (he has eczema so being cautious with dairy) but want to try some this weekend

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/05/2009 09:42

rhian - in nearly 4 years of bf mine have never taken a bottle, so I have no idea! We are milk intolerant too, so don't do fromage frais. If we did then I would give the ones that I think are by little dish. (i can picture where they are on the shelf in my waitrose, but I'm not 100% certain of brand). As a general rule I like stuff by rachels or yeo valley. Beware of many aimed at children that are packed with sugar.

Rhian82 · 08/05/2009 09:53

Can'tSleep - yep I'm very wary of things with sugar in them! DS is generally okay with a bottle, he's taken one from DH since he was a couple of months old, but when he started at nursery he refused to take one from them - I think it was the combination of new people and new place. On my first day back at work I had to go to the nursery in my lunch hour to feed him! He's gradually got better though (and takes water from a sippy cup from them, which he won't do for us!) and now apparently just glugs his milk down very happily!

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/05/2009 10:08

Yes they are little dish. Was on phone before so not v easy to google and check.

Should have gone out already, but ds having a good sleep after not enough of it at night. Typical. He did this last Friday too, and I had to wake him to go to toddler group.

Rhian - Q WAS taking about 3 4oz bottles of ebm while away from me during the day (8am-3.45pm).
When he was littler he was taking 3 8oz bottles, but now he feed more with me before work and after and at bedtime (and now in middle of hte night, too ).

Fromage frais - "little dish" no sugar and Plum Organic Baby fromage frais no sugar. Don't do petit filous or muller little stars - both packed with sugar. I went through this a couple weeks ago

KSal · 08/05/2009 10:09

Rhian82 plum organic do sugar free fromage frais (dark maroon packaging). sainsbury's 'kids' fromage frais is also sugar free. Rachel's organic do 'my first tastes' and 'taste explorers' yogurts that look good and are also suger free but the pots are a bit big for this age.

KSal · 08/05/2009 10:10

suger!!???

Rhian82 · 08/05/2009 10:10

Ooh they look good thanks, I'll have a search in Waitrose at the weekend.

Honeymoonmummy · 08/05/2009 10:14

Will do some carrot, thanks. I thought the olive oil might help with her gaviscon constipation.

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/05/2009 10:30

Orange juice goes well with carrot hmm, and should help with constipation, so you could do just carrot and orange today .
But olive oil should be fine to have too.

Morning.
Ksal I gave my DH three days notice of my Thursday evening TV. He knows better than to get in the way of my George. Poor man went for a shower and was in bed by 10! I also sky+ Brothers and Sisters, and Katie & Peter. So I understand your TV issues. I have just finished watching them all. I love Rob Lowe.

HMM, in my very humble opinion, potatoe should only ever be mashed with loads of butter and milk, or cream, if I cant have it like that then I wont eat it. Blended pots go yucky. Parsnip is great instead of. Jacket pots are best. Just cut into wedges and P will suck off the potatoe. Yum. But messy.Carrots are always a winner.

MM have you had some chocolate yet this morning?

CSWS, I had some Respect Banana Loaf cake last night. Very yummy. Thanks for the heads up. I never knew Respect cakes tasted so lovely. Have you thought of setting yourself up as a Personal food shopper? A whole new career.

Rhian I'm sure DS is getting enough food. He would be telling you loudly enough if not.

Marthasmama · 08/05/2009 10:45

No Ronshar, the craving passed and today I'm fine. I haven't even had breakfast yet. I have been dancing round the room with M, singing loudly and scaring the crap out of her! She apparently doesn't like mummy's Courtney Love impression.

Bugger William is now officially mobile. Thats it the babies have left the building

MM William laughs when I sing to him, either that or he puts his hand in my mouth. He does like the Bonkers song by Dizze Rascal

Pistachio I have to go in at least 3 times to roll W back over or extract his legs from sticking out of the cot bars! He seems to find it comfy!

Marthasmama · 08/05/2009 11:03

He's still a baby until he can walk. You're ok for now. M normally likes my singing but this morning called for loud singing. She pulled a face like she was in a wind tunnel.

Rhian82 · 08/05/2009 11:05

Yay, I love Rob Lowe too. Is Brothers and Sisters worth getting into? It looks good but it's managed to pass us by completely so far.

ronshar · 08/05/2009 11:12

Yes it is pretty good. Has managed to make me cry loads. But since having children I cry at bumble bees so no indicator of it being good!!!
If you go to the channel 4 website you can watch loads of back episodes.

Lozza70 · 08/05/2009 11:24

MM managed to load up Sander in his modelling pose, DH is worried it's too high fashion given he has a face for catalogue!

Just made up a big pot of spring chicken casserole for Sander but as he can smell it it's proving very hard to hold out until lunchtime. On the fromage frais discussion I'm a natural yoghurt girl with some fruit puree stirred in. Pear seems to be the favourite at the moment. It seemed to be a real struggle to get something without added sugar but I'll definitely have a look at some of the suggestions from Sainsburys.

Marthasmama · 08/05/2009 11:26

We loved The West Wing. That was a brilliant series.

I am now wishing M could not roll. I was changing her nappy this morning (on the changing mat on the floor) and had to leave the room as there had been a poo explosion. DS was meant to be keeping an eye but he's 5 and playing with Transformers is more appealing. When I came back in poor ds was desperately trying to remove pooy wipes from M's hands! Luckily it was a clean last wipe one, but it marks the beginning of the end of slacker parenting. I usually leave the nappy until she's dressed. Plus we had our own almost choking incident. M had some toast about an hour ago and since then we had been playing and singing etc. I put her down to change her nappy and she started coughing and choking. I sat her up and a lump of toast came out. She must have stashed it in her cheeks like a hamster.

Marthasmama · 08/05/2009 11:28

Lozza - I see what you mean. Very cute.

ronshar · 08/05/2009 11:36

He is sooo lovely.
I have only just worked out what ANTM stands for. (dumbass)

ronshar · 08/05/2009 11:38

MM why cant small children watch thier baby brother/sis. DD2 is rubbish, she either drags W around like one of her dollies or just ignores him! How am I supposed to mumsnet while that is going on??

Rhian82 · 08/05/2009 11:49

Yep West Wing is one of our all-time favourites. We've got the DVDs and have lent them to so many people - they all get instantly hooked and love it too.

Lol MM - I put DS's dirty wipes in a nappy bag hanging from some drawers just above his mat, then chuck it out every day or so. Unfortunately he's getting more and more curious about it and will kick himself back until he's completely underneath it and then start grabbing at it! I've always stopped him so far but one day he's going to tip them all over himself?
