Spot - that is such fantastic news about your sister's scan. I am ridiculously pleased given I don't even know her.

Right Ladies, I am having a shitty day and need to rant. I am really feeling horrid after 2 incidents this morning. First DH woke with a very bad back. This happens a couple of times a year and he ends up flat on the floor for days. We thought that his new regime of regular pilates and osteopathy might have got us out of this cycle but clearly not. Anyway while I was dressing the DDs he tried to get up to go to the loo and I heard a huge thud and he had fainted in agony. DD1 saw and freaked out and I did not remain calm so freaked her out further. I bundled her off to her nanny as she sobbed and now I realise how badly I handled it. I then spent an hour helping DH to move onto his floor mat and get some clothes on. He still can't even crawl to the loo.

The second incident was at the GP's where I had an appt to discuss recurrent mastitis. She was lovely but really scared me by asking if I had a family history of breast cancer and when I explained my mum died of it she sucked her teeth and said that if I get mastitis again she might refer me to the breast clinic because of that history and because I just had a massive dose of oestrogen in pregnancy (mum's type of cancer fed off oestrogen). Of course I didn't think of all the questions that are now on my mind and I am now stumped as to why she would raise the possibility of a link and not refer me now. Why wait for the 5th infection??? I think it was a little thoughtless really. So Lal I feel for you even more now. Shall we form a breast misery support group?

Got to go, DH screaming...

tillyfernackerpants · 29/04/2009 14:47

spot I missed your post earlier, that's fantastic news! Does she know she's got a whole coven behind her?

arti poor you & dh. And yes, the gp was a little insensitive. Could you ring up & ask for a telephone appt to talk through it all?

pmk1 · 29/04/2009 15:52

Hello,
Crap night here - ds waking but not for feed Settles when I shove dummy in. I'm convinced it's to do with day time napping as he always stirs at night when he has napped a lot in the day (like yesterday) so I'm doing my best to keep him awake today..... Came with me bikini shopping, he was an angel. Just watched with curiosity when I tried on several and giggled when I pulled horrible faces at the mirror! Anyway, moved on and ended up at TKMaxx where I had the most success! Bought ds some summery clothes for our trip and ended up buying a mix and match plain black bikini which has good coverage on the bottom. Now I'm wondering if the bottom is a bit too middle aged, but I can always buy another bottom and or top and can't really go wrong for a tenner right? I also got ds his sun suit there! That was a real find, as it is this one (well different pattern) and an Australian company so I'm impressed and it was only £9.99!
WG the swim seat I have is this one so I will let you know how it goes! Might even send a photo!! I got mine from ELC and it was £15 unfortunately but I didn't have time on my side since I always do things last minute!
So we're all decked out now - he can't wait! Even got him some sandles yesterday from Mothercare!
VG I know what you mean - I can look for Bikini when we get there and no doubt will it's just that the first few days is when I really care cause we are at the resort - after that I'm just slopping round in my brothers pool hopefully consuming drinks with little umbrella's in them while dh attends the Barbie! No problems with the weather unless it rains as it's been a high of 31 and low of 22 !
Spot so happy for your sister! Had a look at that website - wish I haddn't left it so late!!
Right I couldn't keep ds awake any longer and is asleep in his bouncy chair... Must get a coffee while it's all quiet....

lal07 · 29/04/2009 17:10

arti that is dreadful. Bear in mind I haven't a clue what I'm talking about - and of course not googling - but I've never heard of link between mastitis and breast cancer. But having put thought in your head, GP should refer you for your peace of mind if nothing else. Grr.
When I had mastitis after DS I was in hospital a lot - and saw the breast consultant at EGA a few times. I had scan after scan and they never found anything sinister. At no point did anyone tell me that there was concern about breast cancer because of oestrogen (my Mum's cancer was also oegtrogen receptive) from pregnancy or mastitis. Bloody hell though. Last thing you needed. Hope your DH is feeling a bit better.

Spot am so pleased for your sister.

Back later. Am supposed to be going to the gym but have lost my card. Am so absentminded. That or subconsciously trying to avoid. Pmk am of your trip. Sounds like you're going to have a fab time.

Also daisy nice work with your norks of steel....

daisydora · 29/04/2009 17:53

arti what an awful day you've had. Very irresponsible of her to say all that and then just leave you hanging. Hope your DH is a bit better.

Veggiemummy · 29/04/2009 19:28

Oh Arti you poor thing, what a terrible day for all of you. Surely if the oestrogen rush of pregnancy is a risk factor for women with a history of this type of breast cancer should all those at risk be screened after pregnancy or at least warned!?! I agree with what has been said very insensitive GP if this is an issue surely 5 episodes is enough to warrant a referral. I think you def need to call someone back to talk about it. Or is their any sort of information line for this sort of thing.

Also someone asked me about the chamomilla teething powders and i cant remember if i answered. It's fine to use them if your unsure if it's teething. Chamomilla is good for all sorts of things including wind and just general settling. I give both boys chamomilla for various things inc temperatures and general freak out settling. It's good for mummies too. Though another thing which is good for that 'this is all way too much' feeling is Sepia.

Well it appears I have swine flu im terribly poorly. I seem to be the first person to contract it that has not been to Mexico or been in contact with someone who has been to Mexico...bizarre. Will have to see Dr Tammy Floo, and then quarantine myself at the pub.

JamInMyWellies · 29/04/2009 20:07

Artie poor you and DH that was bloody insensitive of your GP can you ask to speak to another GP about it. There is an amazing pain management Doc who works out of London Bridge. My DP has horrendous back problems and he has now had all the nerves in his lower back zapped so the pain is more manageable. Let me know and I will give you his details.

jumpjockey · 29/04/2009 20:42

evening everyone - right, time to catch up properly at last as dd went off to sleep quite happily at 7.15

final result of the poll was 15 in own rooms, 6 in with parents still. No noticeable pattern as to who gets better sleep, so as with everything else I guess it's just the luck of the draw...

WG re swimming on your own, the class dd and I went to was mostly just holding her firmly under the arms on front or back and swishing her about in the water to get the hang of it, or resting her on a float and ditto, or on your tummy as you kick backwards across the pool. Maybe if you were to ask a lifeguard to keep a special eye on you it would give you a bit more confidence?

kimberely hope J's had a poo by now. Tummy massage supposed to help - certainly makes a difference for wind - circles round the tummy button clockwise and then bigger ones round the whole abdomen. Very gentle pressure.

daisy glad to hear ds's hips are ok future career as hula hoop champion still in the offing and great progress with the bottle, it's great to have the possibility of a night off plus of course to know that the babies won't starve in an emergency. Don't feel re trying the pureed veg, at least this way we know for sure they don't want it yet and can put off anyone pressuring us and our babes. Yay for the norks of steel!

veggie hope your baby yoga was fun yesterday, the nattering bit is great too MN may be fabby but every now and then it's good to talk to people in the same room... excellent news about the mastitis, hope the swine flu gets better soon [edges away]

Effie glad you're in the new house safely, might drop you a line next time we're visiting my Dad (just north of Colchy) for a quick Essex mini-meet. Hope the cystitis is on the way out - it's a bugger, lots of sympathy. Sorry to hear about the bad night, hope it's just 'settling in' pains for the new house. Maybe you need to put butter on their feet (or is that cats...? )

on the general subject of naps - dd had three fairly decent ones in the sling today so really can't complain on that front. lal (and others) I don't think we can be considered selfish for being glad our babes can sleep on the move, otherwise we'd be completely tied to the house and never get out.

wg did you give the bottle a try Love the thought of you being a milk fountain! (sounds a bit like a "special interest" movie ) Booo re falling asleep in the cinema, still a kip is a kip I guess! Sympathy re the pooonami (c. LadyT), suffice to say dd went to the cinema in one pair of trousers this morning and came out in a different one...

lal so glad you're getting seen quickly, more white light and prayers coming to you. that netaporter sale link is dangerous

sybil you star being so brave about a bad night's sleep [resolves to take a leaf from sybil's book] and how cute that dd was trying to BF the baby!

pmk glad you found a bikini! and a bit of a bargain too that sun suit is v cute as well, the little boy in the photos is a cutie.

kayz great news about your dad, what a relief. I loved your weaning response!!

tilly how fab about the night's sleep well done your dh for taking the whole night shift! Do you have another one planned soon?

spot good news that the doc is finally taking poor T's botty seriously, fingers crossed they can find out the problem and get him sorted soon. Excellent response to Maggie btw! and brilliant news about your sister again

v impressed with everyone's famous people encounters! and realised my post this morning made no sense, god knows what I was trying to write??

arti gosh poor dh, how is he now? V unhelpful gp about the mastitis

tillyfernackerpants · 29/04/2009 20:54

jump well done on marathon post!! Dh has agreed to do 2 nights a week, woohoo

traceface · 29/04/2009 20:55

oh arti what an awful day. SO sorry about your GP visit. I really hope you can go back and talk that through when the shock/ anger has settled a little with a list of questions and what action you expect from them. I agree with Lal that after suggesting a concern you should be referred for peace of mind if nothing else. Grrrr to the GP. And how is your DH? How hard for you all. Wish I was nearer and could offer some practical help.

lal - how are you doing today? Thinking of you.

Veggie thanks for the chamomilla teethinng powder info - it was me who asked! I gave her some again today and she seems to love it!

it seems there is a down side to P sleeping on her back...now that she has mastered rolling from front to back, I put her down for a sleep, she rolls over then gets stranded on her back and gets upset, so I have to go and turn her back on to her front so she can get to sleep! She has refused to nap in her cot today because of rolling over so we've had some lovely cuddles with her sleeping on me. I'm hoping she learns to roll the other way soon

well it's 12 hours and 25 minutes until my GP hip/sex appointment. I can do it. I can do it.

spotofcheerfulness · 29/04/2009 20:56

Thanks all for being so lovely about my sis, will post more later but just wanted to say now how grateful I am for everyone's thoughts and kind words .

spotofcheerfulness · 29/04/2009 21:50

Back again, DP gone to bed early so feel no guilt at all about posting.
Arti, am so so sorry you've had such a shite day, how is your DP now? And how grim about the GP appt, she sounds thoroughly insensitive and unhelpful, would there be any chance you could go back to another one and speak to them in more detail?
PMK, good work on the retail therapy front, I love that sunsuit, you must be getting so excited now!
Veggie, sorry you're feeling rotten, hope the healing powers of the grape work their magic in the public house
Tilly, that's ace that DP is doing 2 nights a week, makes such a difference and takes the pressure off whether they sleep through when your day is the same either way .
Trace, LOL at the rolling baby (T does exactly the same), so glad you were able to see the positive side of the situation! Good luck with the GP appt, I hope it goes well .
Well, I had some more good news after my sis's scan - look like I might have found a publisher for the book I started writing before T took my mind off everything, so will need to get my finger out and do a bit of work rather than spend every spare second on MN.
Effie, please come back, I miss you!! Spent the afternoon with some other mums with babies the same age, they're all perfectly nice but there's no real connection there. Makes me realise how I wish you guys all lived near me ...

zoejeanne · 29/04/2009 22:19

Spot such fab news about your sister, and how exciting for T to have a cousin by his first birthday

Daisy at your norks of steel! My Mum has told several people that I am producing jersey double cream, as DD put quite a bit of weight on when she was newborn

Arti what an awful day you?ve had, your poor thing. I hope your poor DH?s back gets better soon, that sounds agony

Trace/Veggie where do you get that teething powder from? DD has red cheeks and is a bit drooly, so I?m trying to get prepared!

I don?t have much to add in the way of famous connections ? although DH has snogged KT Tunstall (but that?s no Jason!)

I?ve spent the evening choosing christening invites ? have finally come up with one we both like, but now need to get our scanner out of the box, link it up to the ?puter, get it working and scan the picture of her little foot in ? a job for tomorrow I think, its far too late to get technical now

Wishing you all lots of sleep xx

waitinggirl · 30/04/2009 03:56

post feed insomnia strikes again. have come down and found dh has left hte sitting room in a tip and the remains of our omelette on the stove top and am furious. why can't he just spend 3 mins tidying up and put stuff back in the fridge before he goes to bed at night (i'm still not used to us going to bed at separate times - find it quite distressing)? people were talking about lists in their heads all the time - i feel i have so much to think about all the time, and still manage to clear the kitchen and sitting room up at the end of the day so it looks nice the next morning - why can't he?

moan moan moan

arti - that sounds so upsetting and worrying. it sounds, though, like the gp, while being lovely and understanding, may be raising unnecessary fears. can you go back for another appointment and ask her either to explain more or to refer you now? hope dh's back gets better - sounds awful.

zj - kt tunstall is pretty good in my books. my dh had gail porter's tongue down his throat once - apparently she drunkenly thought she would force a snog on him when they were working together. i don't think he objected, though.

where are ladyt and turnip? well, i know where turnip is as i have the delight of seeing her most weeks at babycinema, but they haven't posted for a while and i always think of them as the grande dames of this thread.

anyone fancy a north london meet up now we are without effie? to try and cheer ourselves up now she's absconded to deepest darkest essex?

Kayzr · 30/04/2009 08:06

Morning,

WG Sorry you couldn't get back to sleep. My DH does that too sometimes and it drives me mad!!

Spot Yay for your sister, that is such great news!!

Arti Sorry about your DH, hope he is better soon. Also I am sorry about your GP visit, I would see if they can refer you now. Just to be on the safe side.

Veggie I hope you are better soon.

Another full night of sleep for DS2, I didn't sleep well because I was too hot then too cold when I threw the duvet off.

Hope you are all ok today.

tillyfernackerpants · 30/04/2009 08:12

wg hope you got back to sleep. My dh does that all the time & I'm just quietly resigned to it now. Its either that or I'm nagging him every night which isn't great.

kayz great on ds2's sleeping. I am slightly as ds2 is now waking up at 11pm & 2am again. At 2 the only way to settle him is to bring him into bed with us but I can see this turning into a long term solution

pmk1 · 30/04/2009 08:38

Morning, much better night here.... He slept through until 6am again, and ds had less sleep during the day this time and we also took Veggie's advice and confined ourselves to the pub last night where ds slept in his buggy from about 8-11pm! Despite the fact that I haven't been near Mexico or anyone who has, I'm convinced I had swine flu too nasty! - mine lasted 4 weeks Veggie but I hope yours doesn't.
Yes, I was impressed with my bikini find. I put them on again though and decided the bottoms - although having a lovely amount of coverage, possibly screamed middle aged woman so I tweaked them a little! I got another tie from a bikini I never wear ever, and tied them at the sides just to bring them in a little so the sides aren't so wide and they look quite good! I'm most impressed with my creativity
WG sorry to hear about dh's back.... Hoping for a fast recovery for him.
Quick question - I have often had those little bumps on the back of my arms but since being preg they have got far worse and red-ish at times - also at times coming up on the fronts of my arms? My post preg friend also has it and is getting something from the doc.... Anyone know what I'm talking about? it's horrid.... Is it a circulation thing?

pmk1 · 30/04/2009 08:43

Oh and WG Yes my dh does that too - then when he does clear up, it's a real half assed job which I have to do again anyway.
Arti I meant to say you not WG Sorry for your last couple of days. Hope it improves on both fronts

Kayzr · 30/04/2009 09:10

Is anyone else panicing about swine flu? I feel like the only person that isn't all that bothered.

daisydora · 30/04/2009 09:11

wg I hope you managed some more sleep.

Well done kayz & pmk on your sleeping babies. DS awake at 1.30 & 4am then up for the day at 6.30. That is now my normal

Forgot to say my Nan came home yesterday. I took the DC's to see her which I think cheered her up until DD brought her a present in from the garden - a slug She was helping my Dad mow their garden and thought it would cheer Nanny up. I tried to explain a flower might have been better Still Grandad is so pleased to have her home and she is glad to be home.

daisydora · 30/04/2009 09:15

Couldn't give a monkey's about Swine Flu, but I am terrible for not taking things like this seriously. I work with a woman he gets so distressed by things like this I bet she is at her desk with one of those masks on as we speak

notjustanumber · 30/04/2009 10:04

Sorry, I find it really difficult to keep up with everything on here ! Hope I'm not being rude.

WRT to messy husbands, mine is the same, but I do find it amusing rather than annoying - ie in the morning I can tell exactly what he ate as a snack, watched on TV etc...

Veggie, hope you are feeling better. I have had a sore throat, cold for 4 weeks now, and so has DS2. he was barking like a seal at 5:30 am this morning, so I sympathise.

Kayz - good news about your dad, great they caught it early. Cancer is awful but lal and arti, I am sure you will be fine too. Doctors are just being extra vigilant these days. My SILs cancer was diagnosed later than it should have been through being a shoddy doctor, so at least yours are being vigiliant (even if they have foot in mouth) Has anyone heard from Jam ? Is her sister alright ?

As for swine flu - my DH reckons they are making a fuss about it just to distract us from the dire economy

spotofcheerfulness · 30/04/2009 10:32

yes WG, v much up for N London meetup as have managed to miss loads of previous ones. We will have to make an Effiegy (hur hur) and leave a place for absent friends.

tillyfernackerpants · 30/04/2009 10:39

Not fussed about swine flu here either!

Quick question, does anyone think its possible to get a 5mo to give up a dummy? I know it won't be easy but I really do think that's the cause of his not sleeping. I know thumb sucking has its cons but ds1 sucks his thumb & it is much easier to cope with, just wish ds2 would be satisfied with his thumb as well!

Kayzr · 30/04/2009 10:42

Tilly Not sure how to do it really. DS2 decided the other week he wasn't having it anymore. He just pulls it out of his mouth and then tries to shove it up his nose!!!
