star you poor thing, I hope you feel better soon.
myjob I hope you've managed a better night - hurray for all that milk!
honeymoonmummy Hope Poppy has settled down and is vomiting less by now.
We have 16 week jabs tomorrow at 9.15 - exhausted from weekend of birthday celebrations though - DH had invited a couple of really close friends for a surprise dinner party last night - and they were staying over! I don't know about anyone else, but normally for overnight guests I clean the bathroom to Defcon 4 level and even iron sheets and fold guest towels (yes, I could be called Monica!) so on the spot visitors threw me slightly. we had a lovely evening tho, but late, and DH had too much whisky and fell asleep feeding DD at midnight - I woke suddenly at 1.20am and realised that he wasn't in bed - luckily he hadn't dropped her - but her ear was full of milk where the bottle had fallen out - they were both fast asleep.... I was livid,,,
Anyway, am retiring for some shut eye very very soon as my whole family came over this afternoon for birthday tea.
DS's in sausage roll/party food heaven
sleep well everyone

Well I appear to have accidently deleted this thread as thought my watched list was not getting any bigger doh!

star poor poor you, I had it too and it was awful. I shivered loads and felt soooo bad. When Feeding Q put a very warm flannel/cloth on your breast to help ease the pain and soften the lump to let it pass out, it does seem to relieve it and feed as much as poss from that side. I also took 2 paracetamol and 2 nurofen as it really helped, although not sure any good for baby but I was in that much discomfort I took it, to be honest I think only a very small amount will pass through breast milk and I was advised to take pain relief. It did work though. Hope you feel better soon though and anti biotics work.

myjob that sounds fab, not heard of the place before but will find it and happy to travel further to see you as you will have longer journey back otherwise! Poor you though for having not a good night. Thats the prob when there are more that the other one can wake up too dd1 did it last night but lucky for us it was before midnight and DH went to her as he was still awake. And mmm to crispy cakes yummy.

Well just had 2 glasses of rose wine will def sleep well tonight (well if children do, but so far so good)

aubergenie · 09/02/2009 09:37

CSWS and Pistachio - Now I'm wondering whether I've threaded the Close carrier back incorrectly. I can't believe I didn't think of putting it in a pillow case and washing it rather than unthreading it. Doh! I've got a friend who's also got one so I'll have to go and have a close look at hers and check how it's done.

Myjob - It sounds like the feeding is going really well. Fantastic news.

Star - I hope those antibiotics are kicking in now.

I think we must be in the dreaded 4 month growth spurt. Ds has fed between 6 and 8 times between me going to bed and getting up in the morning for the last 3 nights. I'm knackered but, as he's never slept more than 3 hours, it's probably not as huge a shock as if your LO used to sleep through...

Pistachio, is the crazy look anything like MM's nipple up the nose look?

I hope you're feeling better Star.

Pepper I shouldn't laugh but thought of milk in the ear made me chuckle

Just been to the paed. Got domperidone and renitadine (sp?), he said try for a month and by that time maybe consider early weaning. I mentioned the allergy thing and he said it wasn't as big a problem as people think? Any other reasons not to wean too early?

I'm gonna get the drugs later and start them tmrw, are they just administered ythe same as gaviscon?

Risks are respiratory infections, eczema and gastrointestinal infections as I understand it. Lots of links to research in amongst all the usual bobbins on this thread.

Another weirdy poo from ds today. Has anyone else noticed a change in bowel stuff recently?! Any more for you loulou?

Glad paed went well hm. Haven't used those so don't know about administration.

Ds and I started our day at 5:10am today. He's spent half the time since then asleep on my lap, with frequent latching on for a few sucks at each stirring. The other half he has largely spent moaning. He's def not himself at the moment really.

Poppy gets a really red neck too, I cant remember who (Jenwa?) recommended Sudacrem but it helps.

Thanks for info CSWS.

Poppy went back to green and runny poo again yesterday after 5 days back to normal, she's also been grizly last few days but I'm putting that down to reflux which has worsened in the last few days. Sounds like CSWS Junior might be coming down with something eh?

aubergenie · 09/02/2009 18:54

Ds is doing very mucousy, viscousy poos CSWS but he seems fine with it, so I don't think that helps you really. I assume it's just the amount of saliva he's swallowing that's causing it.

Glad the paed appointment went well Honeymoon.

I'm glad your birthday celebrations went well, despite the sofa incident Pepper.

Does anyone else's LO rub their feet together like a maniac? Ds is always rubiing his socks off, which I know is very common, but he then keeps rubbing his feet together and sometimes gets really upset and shouty. I've noticed red marks on his feet but they seem to be a result of the rubbing rather than the cause, I think. Is this normal behaviour?

Marthasmama · 09/02/2009 19:18

aubergenie - does DS have eczema on his ankles? DD does and she rubs her feet together to itch them. DS had eczema on the backs of his knees and used to rub his feet in the creases in a 'scratching dance'. He was such a cheeky monkey! We had to keep socks on him to stop him doing himself damage!

CSWS - DD did an enormous runny poo this morning which went everywhere. All over the floor and covered her bumbo. I think it's related to teething though as she is absolutely frantic with the chewing. She's get eczema on her hands from constantly chewing them.

Myjob - fab news on the weight gain and glad that N is feeding like a mad baby! Have you spoken to your HV?

Honeymoon - My friend's little girl is 4 months and has really terrible reflux. The doctor has told my friend to wean her now and she seems to be taking to it. Hopefully the medicine should sort her out. I can't imagine how much hard work it must be coping with a sicky baby! All that washing....

Star - poor you! I had mastitis with DS but didn't realise so just suffered until it went on it's own. I don't think I can have had it as bad as you seem to though. I started getting it with DD but realised what it was and fed and expressed until that boob was empty. It was agony but it worked. Hope you feel better soon.

Martha is teething and is very very grumpy. She keeps choking on her hand because she shoves it so far into her mouth. She seems to get very frustrated with the teething toys we got her. Has anyone had any joy with teething toys?

ronshar · 09/02/2009 20:24

Myjob.
I looked high and low for information about weaning and the reasons behind the advise to wait until 6months. I have a scientific mind and like to know exactly why the government likes to trot out "good advise" to us mums. Like they havent got enough to be worrying about!
Anyway. It seems to come down to the theory that in SOME babies the lining of the stomache is not fully prepared to digest anything other than milk.
BF babies are the ones who should wait until 6 months, FF fed can be after 17 weeks. There is no test avaliable to ascertain which babies are ready and which babies are not so they have a blanket recommendation for all babies.
This is all recommendation because obviously the government can not determine when and what you feed your baby.
In my own experience both my DDs were early to be weaned, although for DD1 the time was 16 weeks.
I have seen some evidence that one reason for the change in time is because some people were giving extra to babies as young as 2 weeks. To help them sleep was always the excuse. I am sure you have all heard of someone who has put baby rice into the bedtime bottle. Even my SIL was going to do it until I put her straight!!.
I have been giving William puree for two weeks and he really loves it. He gets really excited when he gets into his high chair now. Very cute. Still completely BF as well.
I only give him HIPP organic food. I joined their baby club and got loads of free samples and coupons
It is up to you ultimately.
HTHs.
I am sure that CSWS will be able to give you a much better run down of the evidence against early weaning. My brain forgets more than it retains nowadays

Honeymoonmummy · 09/02/2009 20:24

Yeah the laundry is pretty horrendous but it's more the fact I have to keep her still for 30 mins after each feed, it's a real bind when I'm feeding her every 2-3 hours.

I found a pink bunny rabbit soft teether in a large Boots if she doesnt like hard teethers? You put your fingers in it and she gnaws on your gloved hand

Marthasmama · 09/02/2009 20:41

Myjob - I am going to try BLW as DS HATED purees (might have been my cooking!) and seemed to want to eat with his hands. Obviously nothing to say Martha will be the same. She tried to nick a bit of my sandwich today. She was on my lap while I was eating and she swiped the top bit of bread! She dropped it almost immediately though! Her teething is so bad that she stops feeding to eat her hand instead.

Honeymoon - That teether sounds like a possibility as loves chewing on us. DH cannot believe how painful it is when she gets a knuckle!

loulou33 · 09/02/2009 20:44

hi all,

have been snowed in since yesterday. managed to take joe out in the pram before the snow settled yesterday so he had a good sleep. took him out again today in 6 inches of snow - it was really hard work pushing him but he slept well afterwards. Hopefully will be able to get ds1 to nursery tomorrow but its already -5 here so i think the roads will be too icy again.

csws - yes Joe had another 2 clay like poos today not too much straining but not effortless iyswim - he only poos every 5 days or so..

Honeymoon - i give domperidone with syringe before a feed as it seems to taste ok. I think i used to give rantidine to ds1 the same way iirc but i don't think i had much sucess with it - what did pharmacist tell you to do?? Hope it works - i noticed instant effect of domperidone on Joe but it can take a few days especially if starting on low does and working up. what dose is poppy on? Joe has 2ml 3xday (standard dose for over 6kg i think)

marthasmama - i have yet to find a teething toy that works - netiher of my two have taken to them, Joe just gags on them, maybe he's not teething but he's got red rough makrs on his knuckles where he's been chewing on them..

aubergenie - Joe rubs his feet together all the time. ds1 did too and wore a groove in his bouncy chair!! Joe can't keep socks on so i have resorted to putting soft shoes on him as his feet get so cold, also stops the red ankles as well.

Honeymoonmummy · 09/02/2009 20:48

That's really interesting Ronshar. I'll go join the club

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/02/2009 20:50

I think Ronnie meant to type 'I'm sure that CSWS will lay the law down and tell you not to wean early'

I will confess to having weaned dd at 5 months , but I wasn't as well informed then as I am now. It is thought to help some reflux babies (this was my reason for starting early last time), but others just find that they have coloured foodie sick to deal with instead of milky sick .

It won't stop you from needing to keep her upright for 30 mins though hm, and you'll still be feeding either solids or milk just as often. We wouldn't go more than 2-3 hrs without at least a cup of tea/coffee would we, and bf/solids are like that to a baby. If you wait until she is sitting up by herself though, then it should be a bit easier to achieve .

myjob - I am planning to blw, but if ds seems to want spoon feeding instead/as well as finger foods, then I have no problem with doing this. I am not precious about how food gets into him, as long as he is in some way controlling his own intake. I am only precious about people saying that they are doing 'blw and purees/spoon feeding', when they mean that they are doing finger foods and purees/spoon feeding!

Am sure that you can guess what my advice would be re milk options myjob . Save yourself both some money and some hassle .

SmudgeyDoodle · 09/02/2009 20:54

Aubergine - yes DD does that thing with the feet. She always rubs her feet together and managed to get her trousers off during a nap the other day!!!
Honeymoon I hope Poppy is better today and that your night wasn't too bad. We've not had too much illness with DD yet but I think DS was about 7 months when he was first really sick and it was horrible.
weaning - we did blw with DS and started at about 25 weeks when he seemed ready. i think dd will be blw in a different way - brother led weaning!!! as ds is desperate to give her stuff. i liked the ease of it and things went well with ds eating everything. now though, he's not keen on much other than pasta, bread and yoghurt. typing one handed here as frazzled hand whilst cooking tea.
hard work and a little girl wants feeding again

Honeymoonmummy · 09/02/2009 21:23

WTF is BLW??? And where the flip have they moved the acronym list?????

Here is the bunny teether. I have to say that Poppy hasn't shown much interest in it but after a very brief indication, she's not shown signs of teething really. She's always gnawing on her fist/ teeth though, how do you stop it from getting red and sore when she's just going to suck anything off???

Poppy NEVER keeps her socks on and I too resort to little booties.

She has been asleep since 7.30 bless her, she's had a long and eventful day.

I'm waiting for the letter from the paed to get the dosage, I'm planning to start it tomorrow. How do you properly clean and (dare I say) sterilise the syringe? Will it melt in a microwave steriliser?

Marthasmama · 09/02/2009 21:43

Heh heh Honeymoon - Baby Led Weaning. I would do you a link to a website all about it but I bfing and only have one hand free! Yes, they will just suck any cream or whatever off their red raw hands. Oooo lovely....Martha just threw up all over herself/me!

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/02/2009 21:54
