Honeymoon - I was looking at the active convos earlier and noticed your thread. I didn't realise it was started by you at first and thought 'Oooo, I must tell Honeymoon about that thread.' Duh!!! I had a couple of pancakes, as I made them but tis lent tomorrow so good time to stop the bad food. I've been naughty for months and been eating wheat and dairy when I'm not meant to (just intolerant, it makes me bloated and FAT) so I will be joining you in going dairy free. The main thing I miss is a lovely cup of tea.

Honeymoonmummy · 25/02/2009 09:47

Morning all!

I'm sitting here with Pops eating dairy-free delicious choc spread on toast with tea using rice milk (which is a REVELATION - it's gorgeous!!) and we're off to yoga in a bit - life is gooood. It's nice to have some more company MM.

Oh and I forgot to say - I had my boob out again in public again the other day - I'm getting to be an old slapper pro at this public bf ing malarkey.

star6 · 25/02/2009 10:38

I have done a few times bf in public without the cover... well, in dr office and CO office... so doesn't really count, but I use the cover a lot still!
I took Q to CO yesterday and we had a nice big poo last night!! Yay! And he slept! He didn't go down for sleep until about 8pm though (very late for him - he's usually showing tired signs at 6pm and we bathe him and hold off until the earliest 6.40 to feed and put to bed). He woke at 2, 3.30 and 4.30 but was easily soothed back to sleep in under a minute. Thank goodness!
He takes this "dummy" sometimes but not always... and when he does, he refuses the 3-6 month one, but loves the 0-3month one. There is a significant size difference. Both are orthodontic. I'm wondering if it's bad for them to have one that's too small? I know it's bad all around, but is it worse to have one too small?
which choc spread is that HMM?

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2009 11:25

Quick expressing q for those that do - when you express, do you gradully get less and less and then nothing, or does it suddenly get going again with another letdown? And q2 - roughly how much milk for a feed?

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2009 11:42

I have df choc spread too star - will check make shortly.

Sorry that I couldn't answer your q aubergenie, but this is the first time I've expressed for ds, and dd wouldn't take a bottle.

No idea re dummy star, but can't see why it could be worse.

Glad you like rice milk hmm. Have never heard anyone sound quite so keen!

star6 · 25/02/2009 11:51

expressing.... WOW, I can help CSWS with a FEEDING question! This is a special day

I express 10 minutes with Medela pump in style electric pump (double). It has a rhythm like baby's natural sucking rhythm... starts out quick sucks, then slows to more powerful yet slower sucks. It starts out little, then gets more and dwindles off when finished. If it's first time expressing you might not get a lot at all. But if you keep doing it same time every day (or 2 10 min periods within an hour for a few days to build it up) you start getting more. If I keepthe pump on past 10 minutes, I usually get another "letdown" (I guess... no clue what this actually is as I can't feel it) at around 12-14 minutes and I get another bit out... better just to do the 10 minutes, though IMO.

Q takes about 4oz in a feed when he's away from me during the day (120ml - 150ml). Sometimes, he takes a bit more after that, but most of the time it's 4 oz bottles at a time. I feed him before i go to work and right when I get back and sometimes at lunchtime, too. But if I don't see him from 8-3.45, he will typically take 2-3 4oz bottles during that time. If he doesn't finish all of the milk in the feed, that same bottle can sit at room temp (I usually would cover it though) for up to 4 hours. With formula, you have to throw it away right after - whatever baby doesn't drink, but breastmilk you can use a bit later as it's protected with antibodies (or something like that!)

star6 · 25/02/2009 12:22

oh, forgot to say that when I first started expressing, I did 15-18 minutes rather than 10. The time it takes got shorter as I expressed more regularly.
Having said that, I was just quite late for my expressing time and overflowing, and I sat at the pump for 20 minutes in order to completely drain breasts... I do not want Mastitis round 3 to be so horrible!

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2009 12:23

Cool, thanks star, and lol at your excitement at being able to help I got 80ml from one breast in prob about 10 mins (no-one had fed from that one for a little over 3 hours previously), which doesn't seem too bad for a first go. I'll see if ds will take it from a bottle, and if so then I'll have to express a few more times over the next week or so in the hope of getting out to a quiz night next Friday.
I can store bm in the fridge for 8 days can't I?

OP posts:
star6 · 25/02/2009 12:28

oh, and I use the size 1 (one hole/newborn) nipple on bottle even though he's nearly 5 months because it's more like flow of when he bf. I used to use "Breastflow" bottles... it has an inner "core" and outer nipple and it's shaped like breast, has to suck like he does on breast...etc. But now Q is fine with Avent airflex ones...
My cracks are almost fully healed and no more pain when feeding Q! Thank god for silverette mini cups!!!

star6 · 25/02/2009 12:46

I store it for 4 days in fridge and then freeze if it goes unused... but I think 8 days is ok if your fridge is cold and not a mini fridge. 80ml is incredible for a first go! I blame my very small breasts for minimal milk production!

star6 · 25/02/2009 12:47

kellymom website has loads of info about storing ebm...etc.

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2009 13:35

But remember that I'm feeding 2 of them star, so prob have more milk/faster delivery because of that (I used the side that dd normally has).

OP posts:
pepperrabbit · 25/02/2009 14:28

honeymoonmummy & marthasmummy good luck on the dairy free - glad it's started so well HMM!
CSWS - I'm so impressed star6 knew something to help you express! I'm about to lend my pump to a friend expecting her first (2 weeks ago so he has to arrive soon!) and as I can give no advice at all I shall refer her to Mumsnet pronto.
We've had an exciting morning here.
I've spent an hour at the dentist having a hideous time with injections, drilling, impressions, filling, I feel i should be typing as I sound - sort of dribbly out one side and slightly slurred!
AND DS2 has 2 small but very suspicious spots - one on his back and one on his tummy - which combined with the big sign at preschool yesterday about the 7 confirmed cases of chicken pox is very depressing - none of my 3 have had it yet. I've just spent a week trapped indoors (successfully)potty training and now it looks like we'll be sequentially housebound as they get it one at a time....
moan whinge moan.

pepperrabbit · 25/02/2009 14:28

Doh mathasmama not mummy - oops!

pepperrabbit · 25/02/2009 14:29

I'll just get my coat.

Marthasmama · 25/02/2009 14:35

CSWS - I tend to get about 6oz from both boobs combined. I usually express when Martha has had enough (or when miracle of miracles, she sleeps through and I have football boobs at which time I get 6oz out of each!) I usually get 1oz from the side she fed on and another 5oz from the other side. I get a double let down type thingy. It gushes out then almost stops then goes again! I have the same pump as Star and have only just started expressing. I have become very protective over my hoard of frozen milk. DH keeps offering to feed her in the night using the EBM, but I won't let him use it!

Honeymoon - I went to Bluewater today for my last splurge as I am giving up shopping for lent . I went into Holland and Barrett and had a lovely dariy/wheat free treat. Mmmmmm......Marzipan with dairy free dark chocolate.

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2009 14:35

Oh dear pepper. CP not fun (although ds was conceived as dh (and dd) was recovering from it last year (he'd have been out of the country if he'd been well), so I do have some fond memories of it .

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2009 14:36

Was it a 'lyme regis' one mm? They are yum.

OP posts:
Marthasmama · 25/02/2009 14:42

It was indeed CSWS - They are my absolute favourite choccy treat. Yum!

Marthasmama · 25/02/2009 14:44

Oh and Pepper - Hee hee. Don't worry about the name!!!

Honeymoonmummy · 25/02/2009 15:35

Well Poppy loved the first part of her first yoga (unexpected) and cried during the second half (expected). Hell, at least I had a baby this time!

Funny thinking of you with slurred speech Pepper!

I'm just eating some dairy free choc buttons! My choc spread is the "Dairy Free" range - I got it at Tesco.

Star/ CSWS - I know the 0-5 book says longer but a breastfeeding counsellor told me just to keep it in the fridge for 48 hours max. It does defrost really quickly tho, I used the bags from lansinoh. I can't seem to get my medela to get much out - in fact I used to get more from the avent handpump! Admittedly I've only tried it twice tho.

CSWS I'm planning our first night out on Friday. DH doesn't know yet

Honeymoonmummy · 25/02/2009 15:37

I just found this link for dairy free recipies.

loulou33 · 25/02/2009 15:40

just a quick post as busy with both boys today - hmm you need to make sure you are getting enough vitamin B12 which is usually in animal protein which as a now vegan you are lacking. it is really important for babies to get Vit B12 for muscle growth and nuerological development. You need to either eat some meat or fish or failing that, take vit b12 tablets. I don't think there are any other vits that you should be lacking but you could jsut take a multi-vitamin to be on the safe side.

got to go will catch up on the rest later

Hiphopapotamous · 25/02/2009 16:37

Has anyone heard from Ekka? I was just thinking about her DS and his poor head and wondering how he was now. I don't think she's posted on this thread since. Hope he's ok poor little mite.

Hiphopapotamous · 25/02/2009 16:38

Oooppppssss - Tis me Marthasmama, I forgot to change my name back. I was showing off to impress someone on another thread. I'm going to sort it out now!
