hmm - i am not entirely lactose/milk free as i found being totally free of it made little difference to Joe but too much if it makes a big difference iyswim. like you if i didn't eat quorn i would be screwed but i eat very little if any cheese (this from a confirmed cheesaholic!!) as this really makes Joe windy and upset, and i have soya milk or lactofree milk. Like Ronshar i try to stay away from chocoalte but its virtually impossible. glad Joe's sick nose dive made you laugh, it would have made me laugh if i hadn't had to clean it up - must buy a play mat as our carpets can take no more!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/02/2009 17:17

loulou - I don't think the lactofree milk will make ny diff, as it still contains the milk protein.

You're right (sort of) about nutramigen - I thought you meant another milk that was just lactose free. (N does contain CM, but it is extensively hydrolysed)

Honeymoon - I presume these docs were the same ones who said that there isn't a link between reflux and milk intolerance? Has to be your decision, but 2 years ago I wasn't persuasive enough to get katierocket (a then MNer) to give up dairy. Eventually she did, but months down the line, and her problems were solved. I don't want to give up persuading too easily again!

Pic of ds testing zuma on my profile. We're going to get one.

Gotta go - ds just done huge poo!

loulou33 · 23/02/2009 17:31

ok - i had reintroduced quorn and some milk this week (since fri) as i didn't think dairy free was making a huge difference and now i think it was mistake. i know i posted the opposite just now but joe has been sick 4 times since i fed him 10 mins ago . sorry honeymoon but i think there is a clear link between the two and my paed would agree - don't know why yours doesn't??? will have to go back to no cows milk at all again - bummer.....

Awww - that's a cute smile CSWS. Love the professional christening pic - was DD quite old when she was christened then?

Yes it was the same doc/ paed CSWS but it was the fact that early weaning is hopefully avoidable that made me think to leave it for a while, otherwise I wont know if its the dairy or the increased gav(plus I obviously don't want to do it!!! I appreciate your advice, please feel free to nag away!! I just don't want to get to the end of 2 weeks then realise I've been eating something with dairy in it, like I recall another poster did (Star?)

Arrrrrgh, I don't know what to do! I'm just too tired to think, I've been awake with Poppy since about 3.30 and she hasn't slept all day either!! She's only 15 mins into her post-bath feed and she's finally sleeping but I'm gonna have to wake her to avoid a repetition tomorrow.

Honeymoonmummy · 23/02/2009 19:48

TBH I'm eating v little cheese anyway due to the constipation and I don't drink as much milk as I used to, I mostly drink water now. I'm definitely not giving up bf ing, that was just a moment of desperation!! I have nothing against people who FF at all, don't get me wrong, but I love BF ing and don't want to give it up - besides, I've ordered a BF necklace now...

star6 · 23/02/2009 19:56

Quinlan almost always falls asleep before 7pm. He's so tired! So am I....

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/02/2009 20:08

I wouldn't wake her honeymoon - overtired babies almost always sleep worse than others.

Dd was 17 months when she was Christened. She was far too unsettled as a baby for us to even contemplate it before then. I know that you are having a hard time with Poppy, but if you can try to magnify that tenfold then you will have an idea of what dd was like.
The 'professional' pic was taken by another MNer, who was on the brink of going professional. He (hub2dee) used to be a regular on MN, but somehow managed to wean himself off . She is standing on a chair from our living room (the one that I am sitting on now!) which we moved into the field at the back of our garden!

Oh OK CSWS, thanks. I seem to be getting everything wrong at the moment She's got bags under her eyes.

jenwa · 23/02/2009 20:19

Ok I thought you may like to look at this. I have seen it before but it makes me laugh so much and thought maybe you would all like a chuckle too

jenwa · 23/02/2009 20:24

honeymoon poor you. I think sometimes things just dont work and its not you getting everything wrong, you are being a fab mum as you want to get things sorted. Hopefully Poppy will be fine. Maybe go get some sleep whilst she is too

csws Lovely pic of Duncan in the chair, he does look happy. Maybe you should give that pic to the shopkeep and they will use it for advertising and give you the chair for free surely a happy baby would sell that chair for any mum!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 23/02/2009 20:28

Hello again - sorry that a fw of you are dealing with refluxy/ sickiness (loulou, Honeymoon) - I usually have to change clothes at least once a day due to Polly throwing up on me - she - like her brother before her is a sicky baby. but to be honest I have not really worried about it and I don't speak to HV as I have only gone to have her weighed once at the clinic since she was born.

I am wondering whether I should be worried - but afaik as long as she is looking healthy, sleeping well, alert and happy when awake and feeding well then there should not be a problem. DS posseted so much he had a bib on permamnently as otherwise I was changing his top every 5 minutes! polly has good and bad days today there has been quite a bit of sick - but - me dd and dh have all got a bug (tummy upset and a bit fluey nothing serious) so I imagine she has a touch of that. Sleeping peacefully now though - and she probably won't wake now till midnight - I ususally get away with one feed in the middle of the night to tide us over till the am.

Marthasmama · 23/02/2009 20:42

Don't worry Honeymoon, you're not doing everything wrong. M is often overtired as she won't sleep in the day, but when she does sleep in the day, she wakes up loads in the night. We never know whether to leave her, wake her go down the pub or....I dunno!

Jenwa - So sorry to hear about your Gran. My Granny faded away slowly and it is hard to see.

CSWS - So DS hates his highchair then? Such a gorgeous smile, he'll break hearts!

Star - I tried goats formula with DS before it was banned (he's 5.5 now) and it was horrible stuff. He was 7 months, he wouldn't try it at first. When he did he vomited for England and my God, the smell was awful! So it was pretty rubbish all round.

Myjob - Lots of photos of Sunday's celebrations please.

M has a new talent. She's started blowing raspberries. She thinks it's fantastic and sometime stops feeding to blow some more. Problem is, although it is very cute, we often get a face full of milky baby spit when she does it. Mmmmmm. She's also taken to screeching like a pterodactyl. Scary and quite annoying!

Marthasmama · 23/02/2009 20:46

Bugger, I knew I'd go wrong somewhere. Sorry Loulou, it was you who mentioned the goat's formula not Star!

Honeymoonmummy · 23/02/2009 20:49

Jenwa, you have just cheered me RIGHT up. That's hilarious!! Are the other ones funny? I might have a look tomorrow.

BMSA, sounds like you have a "happy chucker" (Poppy is a decidedly unhappy one!), I think I read a posting on MN somewhere that they can still be doing damage to their oesophagus if left untreated so maybe consider going to the docs? CSWS will undoubtedly advise you better though. I'll try to find the thread again.

How cute that Martha is blowing raspberries! Poppy loves raspberries, it's the one thing guaranteed to make her smile - unless she's already crying in which case you have no chance! Poppy does the screeching thing too, she's really vocal when she's in a good mood. I think she'll be an early talker.

I'm off to bed, night all!

aubergenie · 23/02/2009 20:59

Really sorry to hear all the reflux ladies are having such a hard time at the moment. It must be awful for you.

CSWS - Duncan clearly likes that chair! What a lovely picture.

Another shocking night again last night. I'm off to bed soon.

Good sleep everyone!

Honeymoonmummy · 23/02/2009 21:06

Sorry BMSA, I couldn't find the link. CSWS I just found this page which purports to list all dairy products - does this look about right for the things I should avoid?
Right, NOW I'm going to bed, night all!

jenwa · 23/02/2009 21:10

MM Sorry about your gran too, it is sad isn't it and so hard to see them. I think about DD's now and my parents and how it is no different to that, just really in the way my gran was there when we were younger and now she is just sitting in a chair doing nothing. Age is sooo sad and its so depressing.
Anyway that link is funny and honeymoon she has afew other funny ones but the rest are mainly normal. Just that one is the best and soooooooo true Glad I cheered you up
mm lol at your little one sounding like a pterodactyl (would never have known how to spell that!) and the face full of milk although prob not really that funny , bless her. My DD keep laughing (really laughing out loud) to DD1 when she shouts "boo" and jumps about in front of her, it is soooo funny and sooooo cute.

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/02/2009 21:40

It's a slightly peculiar list honeymoon, but looks fairly comprehensive. I was never sure about stuff like sodium caseinate, so am glad to see the list clarifying these. Am about 'non-dairy creamer' being on a list of things that contain dairy! And how on earth does dairy get into 'hydrolysed veg protein'?!

John Lewis were trying to price match the highchair, but it will take them a few days to verify my other price and agree it, so I've just ordered it from kiddisave, as they have an additional 5% off at the moment, making it £118.75. If anyone else wants this chair then order it from them now!

I can't blow raspberries . Don't know why, but never been able.

this (hopefully - is a weird link - downloads as a pdf) is the explanation for goats' milk being banned.

Will check out your link when we have the TV off jenwa.

csws - i think i'm being really thick about the whole lactose/cows milk protein thing. Can you help me out? I'm so confused about the whole thing...i think its partly sleep deprivation too. Is lactose a type of cows milk protein? Lactafree milk says its for cmpi people but its still milk, or is it?? Is there a website somewhere (thanks for the link to the nz one hmm) that tells you what is 'allowed/not' for cmpi?? How come Joe can tolerate formula on rare occasions without any apparent reaction and then me eating some quorn makes him so sick or is it just coincidence? Are there any other threads i should look at to answer these things. i tried to search but there were so many it made my head swim!! thank you

I am off to see dr tomorrow to discuss domperidone as i think it may not be working as well as it has done in the past....am counting down the weeks until 26 weeks when this hopefully comes to an end and his muscle strengthens......off to bed

loulou33 · 23/02/2009 21:43

jenwa - that is very funny btw - will try to watch some of her other stuff when i get a chance

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/02/2009 22:17

Ok, will answer as best as I can, but can't guarantee that I'm 100% correct on all of it...

Lactose isn't a type of cmp. Lactose is simply a term meaning 'milk sugar'. Breastmilk contains lactose, even if you haven't eaten lactose from cows. Some people struggle to break down lactose, I believe because they don't produce enough of an enzyme called lactase. In babies this tends to be a temporary thing, and they can take colief to give them the lactase needed. Thus babies with an ongoing lactose intolerance are rare. Adults who cannot tolerate milk generally do have a problem with lactose.
Milk also contains protein (cmp). Lots of babies (thought to be around 5% or more) cannot tolerate cmp, and there is no 'easy fix' (ie no equiv of colief to enable them to tolerate it). Anything made from cows milk will contain CMP I think (I have a slight query over whether lactose actually contains CMP, but asked on MN a few weeks ago and no-one else was sure either), so should be avoided if the baby is CMP intolerant. This would include lactose free yoghurts and milk.
Formula milk is made from cows milk, but the processing of it breaks down some of the protein. This is why babies who are not highly allergic don't always react to formula, and their problem sometimes only becomes evident when they are weaned and have unprocessed dairy.
Hypoallergenic formula is still (sometimes) made from cows milk, but the protein is almost completely broken down (hydrolysed), thus making it digestible even by allergic children.
Joe's sickness after the quorn may be coincidence (could he have developed the sickness bug that's been doing the rounds?), he may be reacting to something else in the quorn (egg?), or he may be reacting to something else that you have eaten (it's hard to pinpoint exactly what because different things reach your milk at different speeds).
I hope that helps at least a bit!

Q was up for AGES last night.... went down usual at 7pm then up from 9pm - 2am!!! Not really crying... but AWAKE. I finally brought him into bed with me.. and fast asleep he went! As much as I LOVE having him next to me, I want him to sleep in the cot at night. I do not want this to become habit... it's only one night....

loulou33 · 24/02/2009 09:25

star - joe had a night like that this week and luckily it was repeated (yet) so hopefully Q was just having a wakey wakey night. I have no idea either why Joe was awake as he wasn't upset at all just cooing and staring at stuff.

Thanks so much CSWS i think that makes sense now. I keep getting confused between lactose and cmp. So even lactose free stuff may contain cmp right? I can now see why Joe isn't sick after formula and i do think his allergy is fairly mild. We haven't had a bug in this house (fingers very tightly crossed) so i don't think it was that and i'm pretty sure he's fine with eggs as i eat a lot of them. There's not much else i can eat!! Am considering eating fish although i don't really like it but i need to get protein from somewhere and vitamin B12. I am hoping it was just a blip as he hasn't been very sick since tea time but i am off to docs today again.

Marthasmama · 24/02/2009 09:59

Morning all. Both DC have conjunctivitis, yay! DS came home from school with it and htne obviously rubbed his germy little hands all over M and now she has woken up all crusty and sticky. DS is off school as I am a responsible mother and don't want him spreading it around. DH (who is off 'studying') has taken him to the chemist but M will get lovely breast milk in the eye to treat hers! So this morning she was then . I asked DS if he wanted mummy milk in the eye but he politely declined! Poor M, she keeps trying to rub her gritty eyes but can't seem to work out how. She's still chipper and the pterodactyl noises continue.

We had a rubbish night too sleep wise. M woke up at 6 wanting to chat and play. We normally pop her down in bed with us so we can chat and then when she gets fed up she has some milk and back to bed. Last night she came to our bed, rolled on to her side looking at me, tucked her hand inbetween my boobs and went to sleep! Cheeky minx! We slept there until 9.15, lovely.
