This is the link to the NCT sales

aubergenie · 21/02/2009 12:35

Thanks Honeymoon!

Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 15:38

Poppy is still vomiting and irritable, altho I think the irritability is largely tiredness today. If she's still like this by next Weds (2 weeks after the meds started) I'm going dairy-free. Aaaaargh! Please tell me where to start!!! I'm going off to search MN/ google now. What do I do about pasta???

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2009 17:21

Pasta doesn't normally contain dairy (except the stuffed kind). We have it with a tomato/roasted veg sauce (or bolognese, which is obv no good to you).
You want Pure Sunflower spread or vitalite for butter.
Swedish Glace if you want ice cream.
For milk, suggest rice or oat for first couple of weeks, and if you establish that it is an intolerance then you can then try introducing soya milk if you prefer, and keep an eye out for returning symptoms (this is because a lot of milk intolerant babies also have a problem with soya).
Just ask if you have any more questions about it.

Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 17:55

Thought pasta contained egg? Is that just the fresh stuff?

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2009 17:58

Most pasta doesn't contain egg, but more importantly, eggs aren't dairy!

Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 18:04

Oh So why does my mum get dairy-free mayo then??

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2009 18:15

I can only speak of Hellmans, but their light and extra light both contain milk, whereas their full fat is dairy free. You'd be amazed what processed products milk creeps into!

OP posts:
Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 18:18

Woo hoo Hellmans is safe!!

aubergenie · 21/02/2009 18:22

Sounds like you're still having a tough time, Honeymoon.

I think you're veggie aren't you? If so, check out this site I recommended to Star. Lots of dairy free recipes amongst them.

And you've grown her into a beautiful 5 month old all by yourself .

OP posts:
Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 20:40

Awww happy 5 month birthday Caitlin! Poppy isn't even 4 months yet!!

Thanks Aubergenie, I'll look at that website. I am almost veggie - I started eating fish again when I got pregnant.

Poppy's been really sick again tonight.

I remember some of you saying you got your periods again despite BFing. When was that? Only I've been in a vile mood all day....

Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 20:48

I am genuinely not sure I can go dairy free folks. I'm a really fussy eater and dairy is a huge part of my diet. Plus I don't have time to cook fresh stuff, Poppy is so high-maintenance and rarely sleeps in ther day. Maybe I should just go onto formula.

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2009 20:49

With Poppy sleeping through it's certainly long enough without feeding to allow ovulation, so could be hmm. Mine came back at 9 months last time.

If she's milk intolerant then formula is really the worst thing that you can do. Firstly, formula is made from cows milk, so you'd need a hypoallergenic one, which you'll only get after a paed referral, and secondly, bf provides lots of protection from allergies, so if she is an allergicky sort then it would really benefit her.
Do you think that you could manage a couple of weeks dairy free, just to see whether it's the problem or not? If it's not then you get to have dairy and still bf, and if it is then you can address the implications then and make an informed decision.
Tell us the sort of things that you eat now, and we'll see what we can come up with that's simple and dairy free.

I've beeen eating a lot of fresh fish so that's OK. It's packaged food I'll struggle with - Linda McCartney veggie lasagne, fish pie, can I have fish fingers? I make quorn curry wit beef style strips that I bet have something in an Lloyd Grossman curry sauces that I know wont be dairy free. Ceasar salad dressing, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, ready salted crisps, digestives, I'm currently addicted to muller yoghurt pots with digestive bits in... I hate dark choc, I don't like goats cheese, I can't eat much egg due to the constipation. God I'm om such a downer.

Honeymoonmummy · 21/02/2009 21:06

Bet I can't have the frozen mash either can I?

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2009 21:24

Sounds like you need a big hug.
Pre-packed mash a no-no, but you could make a big batch up and freeze it in portions.
I hated dark choc too, but have grown to like it. You can get some vegan milk choc, but I don't think it's that great I'm afraid.
Fish fingers mostly good (I say mostly because I haven't looked at them all, but the ones I buy are fine). LG curry sauces no, but you can get some dairy free curry sauces in a jar/pouch. Caesar dressing my fave too, but no, you'll need to find another kind. The Pizza Express House Dressing that you can buy in a jar in supermarkets is fine (I'm not keen on it, but most people seem to like it). Ready salted crisps fine (it's ones like beef, chicken, cheese and onion that tend to have milk in). Digestives no, but you can have bourbons, fruit shortcake, hob nobs, party rings...
Soya yoghurts, soya custard.
You need to avoid goats and sheeps products too, so prob good that you don't like goats cheese!

You could make a huge batch of ratatouille style veggies one night, and blend some to use as pasta sauce (freezes well), mix some with kidney beans in chilli sauce to have with rice, and keep some to top jacket potatoes.

You can have stir fries (chop veggies the night before or buy pre-prepared) - lots of stir fry sauces are fine, as are noodles.

Jacket potatoes with tuna/sweetcorn/mayo.

Fish and veggies.

Risotto - lots of varieties eg mushroom and cheesy garlic/herb (get toffuti soft cheese from holland and barrett to mix in), prawn and scallop, tomatoey kind (we put sultanas and chick peas in ours).

Curry from a jar sauce.

That's gotta be at least a week's worth of meals.

Thanks from me too CSWS, just ignore me, I'm in one of those moods tonight! I've got a ridiculously small glass of wine in front of me now so things seem a bit better now! I'm sure I can do it for Poppy's sake!
