Boo!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
pertelote · 25/01/2009 18:12

Rotter I think I'm waiting - Marianne is 24 weeks and I may or may not crack in the next fortnight! Actually it won't be in the next week as DH is away and he'd hate to miss it But as I always say she is small, and her weight gain is still good on EBF so that's why I'm a bit hesitant - don't rock the boat is our motto... (also, no offence to anyone going early, but the fact that the HVs etc round here seem so happy to advise ignoring the WHO advice makes me in my perverse way keener not to, IYSWIM.)

AngusSteaknife · 25/01/2009 18:16

No burning steaks please
Izzy is one week shy of five months - so that's five times 4.33 recurring weeks - I am going to wait till 6 months and might try [whispers emoticon] BLW - do you think if they called it something else people wouldn't have such a carrot stick up the arse about it?

I think mainland europe moved to 6 month guidelines prior to the UK so the few people I have spoken to about it (my MIL) haven't been too bothered. I did manage to explain BLW to her in French. [smug emoticon]

My 9 month neice has purees and bits and pieces of all sorts. No-one seems that uptight about it here.

What attracts me is the correlation between the babies physical ability to ingest and its ability to begin to digest - it seems kind of logical to me.

AngusSteaknife · 25/01/2009 18:19

Twilight - yes that did make sense and again when you put it like that seems logical. But I'm a theory floosy so you could tell me anything and I'd find a way to think it a good idea.

Buckets · 25/01/2009 18:24

LOL it did make sense TS but my kids are clearly an anomaly as Kurt is the chubbiest yet and the worst sleeper.

Has anyone alerted Giraffe to our impending ambush? Not that I'm starting to worry or anything...

Had words with DH in the 2hrs he was home this avo, not sure there's much chance of starting our new 'regime' tomorrow morning as planned.

TwilightSurfer · 25/01/2009 18:27

LOL Steak is sounded some mucher nicer coming from my Venezulian (sp) born pediatrician. I love listening to her.

And yes, no burning steaks. I like mine blackened occasionally but not burnt.

Just as a disclaimer of my own, Reese really isn't being "weened" so to speak. I offer her solids once every few days and only ONCE a day when I do. Sometimes she may have them a few days in a row but I haven't gotten to the point where I feel like she's ready for true "meals". Actually when I think of weening (am i spelling that correctly) I think of the time when bottles will become obsolete.....MONTHS from no. Funny how words mean different things depending on your point on the globe.

TwilightSurfer · 25/01/2009 18:28

Buckets....make up and it can.

Sausageandmash · 25/01/2009 18:29

TS - loved the idea of the heretical early weaners being justly ".. BURNED AT THE STAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I'm just glad that I'm doing so on medical grounds/advice - hopefully this gives me an "out" of this hot (pureed sweet) potato of a topic!

Buckets · 25/01/2009 18:34

Yeah, Kurt just gets a little something once a day, tongue thrust reflex still fully operational here. Will just bring a ricecake for him to suck on Tues.

CC PMSL at your mate's pics on FB, must have been such a shock to find her little girls with their DIY haircuts but oh so funny.

Alieight · 25/01/2009 18:37

Rotter I was absolutely adamant that I was going to wait until 26 weeks - even had to speak sharply to my mum who kept going on and on about 'You'd like a bit of mashed banana, wouldn't you' to Adam...and then had chat with nursery and decided to see what Adam thought of food. I honestly expected him to pick up the parsnip, put it in his mouth and then drop it/not show much interest. Instead he chewed and ate the whole thing, plus another couple (DP and I were putting them in front of him with a kind of bemused excitement). However, we're going very slowly - only one 'meal' a day so far, and if he doesn't want it, then that's fine. Mostly though he gets upset now if he doesn't have something to chew on while we're having our dinner.

Steaknife I think there is a correlation between ability to ingest and ability to digest. Have definitely noticed Adam's nappies are a lot more solid [TMI emoticon] and I generally can't see undigested chunks in them. Except carrots, for some reason...

Buckets the thing I'm worried about with Giraffe is all the people who would normally have lunch there, but back away hastily decide not to when they walk in and see all the babies!

Is anyone else secretly wishing that another customer on the day has a problem with breastfeeding...although I suspect it would take a very brave person to voice any complaint! [weird militant breastfeeder emoticon].

TS I wonder if higher BMI, or size generally might be linked to larger stomach size - so can fill up more and thus go longer between feeds? Just a thought, and based random musing rather than any medical evidence whatsoever...Or maybe speed of feeding? Adam has always been an extremely leisurely feeder (can still take over an hour), and has always been a good sleeper. Hmmm.

TwilightSurfer · 25/01/2009 18:38

S&M you are a GOLDEN MOMMA in my book but I'd still steer clear of the WEANING threads (spelled it correctly that time) because they will find fault with a the MAKER HIMSELF.

TwilightSurfer · 25/01/2009 18:42

Ali somebody mentioned the size of the stomach down one of these threads recently...walnut size, maybe? I've always (being keen on nutrition) followed the rule that your stomach is the size of your fist. I think that hold true for infants (notice i said THINK).

Funny thing about leisurely eaters. A friend's son is STILL a leisurely eater. It takes him three times longer than all his brothers to finish the same meal. I've watched him at parties....soooooo true. He's such a doll though.

AngusSteaknife · 25/01/2009 18:48

Alieight - that's just the way I have interpretted (sp) it. What I found helpful (more so than MN threads and the BLW blog) was this article (to be fair link from BLW blog)

Another thing that appealed from this article is the seperation of milk-feeds for nutrition and solid food for discovery/play.
I have had food isues in the past and am keen to find ways to minimise any of my past bad habits passing to Izzy. Yes probably a bit paranoid to be worrying about it just yet, but I think this will be good for me to get me to relax around her feeding as much as for her to enjoy smooshing food over her face.

oopsacoconutflavouredhaggis · 25/01/2009 19:07

Evening all

RL took over this weekend so have not been on much.

Last night we had wake ups every 2 hours for food - at first I thought she just needed soothing but when offered the boob she ate like a child who has never been fed! I am hoping she is just increasing supply.

On the weaning front - DD is now 22 weeks and was offered a bean at lunch today, she looked at it held it in her hand and sucked her thumb using the bean to stroke her nose??? So I think she may not be ready.

DD is sat on DH naked and she has done her first poo in 2 days - he is not amused, I will return!

Alieight · 25/01/2009 19:08

Steaknife I read that article too, and then went out and bought Gill Rapley's book. I definitely like the solid food as discovery/play aspect - makes everything far more relaxed as I'm honestly not that worried if Adam doesn't eat, and I still get to feed him as much as before, which I love.

TS I used to be a very leisurely eater, but since becoming a mum I've found I tend to bolt my food down at an unnatural pace so I can deal with Adam if he gets upset. Which is dumb, cos at dinner-time DP insists on me taking my time, he'll deal with Adam if he needs anything etc. Although as a baby apparently I was very efficient, so who knows.

AngusSteaknife · 25/01/2009 19:13

Alieight - do you think it is worth buying the book? I was planning to just bimble along making it up as I went along. I mean how hard can it be?

Day 1 - present child with sugar/salt/honey/drug free boiled carrot stick - watch as she smooshes it on her face and then drops it on floor.
Day 2 - as above with brocolli
DAy 3 - forget to boil any vegies and give up.

RotterMcPotter · 25/01/2009 19:16

Sorry to post and disappear; DH nicked the laptop . I'm pleased to see I'm not alone in waiting to wean, although getting quite impatient now. 2 weeks to go!

RotterMcPotter · 25/01/2009 19:17

Off again, baby shouting and very grumpy. Do you think he's hungry?

AngusSteaknife · 25/01/2009 19:33

I used to be a slow leisurely eater too. Mum says my primary school complained I was always the last one in the hall eating - or I think more accurately - not eating.

pertelote · 25/01/2009 19:37

Buckets Giraffe are expecting 15 (plus 15!) of us and seem quite happy about it - in fact they've been very good, not asked for a deposit which they are meant to for groups our size. I get the impression they'll be glad if we can order early-ish once most of us are there so as to get a head start on the lunch rush .

The table's booked under my real name BTW but I don't suppose they are expecting more than one group of 15 babies...

Can't wait to meet you all!

AngusSteaknife · 25/01/2009 19:41

DH not home yet, and I am starvatious as I decided to wait to eat with him. I have really missed him the last two evenings as he usually puts Iz in her cot for the night - I just don't have the same magic daddy hands and it has taken an hour each night.

Though I didn't miss his knobly knees filling up my side of the bed after getting up for night feeds.

Ah well should be here soon.

TwilightSurfer · 25/01/2009 19:48

PLEASE remember cameras ladies!!!

CaptainCaveman · 25/01/2009 19:57

TS I hereby make my seldom promise to you that I will take my camera, with battery fully charged!! Although I guess I will have to make people sign a disclaimer on the day to say if they are happy to appear in the photos! lol.

BUckets they are CaptainDippy's daughters...minus beautiful hair! (CaptainDippy is usually frequenting the prayer thread which is my other main mn hang out!). EEEEKK is all I can say!

cyteen · 25/01/2009 20:14

Just a note of warning: I am still the slowest eater on the planet. Seriously, even when I feel like I'm bolting my food down, it's actually proper snail's pace.

DS clearly takes after his dad, he inhales food

weetimorousdizzybeastie · 25/01/2009 20:16

CC CaptainDippy was lovely enough to keep us informed when you were in hosp - I remember her

Dylan slept through last night, I forgot to mention, and she'd no solids yesterday as wasn't wanting any. She's had a few chews at bits and pieces today but nothing worth noting - fingers crossed for tonight as I stupidly waited up for dream feed (which I didn't do) and then waited up till DH came home from work at 2am [idiot emoticon]

all three in bed, kitchen tidied, washing on, ironing being ignored, candleford on the telly, all is well

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 25/01/2009 20:19

dizzy fpg to ya.

Marcus slept through last night too 7.15-7.15
No dream feed, no wake ups or top ups. First time ever. We are not on solids yet either, tried other week but still got tingue thrust.

He did however have about 11 oz before bed.
